Along with pumpkin carving, scarecrows and leafs frolics, one of my favorite events on Long Island in the Autumn, is Restaurant Week!

For those of us who love eating out and trying new places, the fourth annual Long Island Restaurant Week is almost here!

This year Long Island Restaurant Week will take place from Sunday, November 1st through Sunday, November 8th.

Again, the three course prix fixe for $24.95 per person all night, except for Saturday until 7 PM; will be offered by many participating restaurants.

LI Ducks!

Can you believe that last Thursday evening, I went to my first baseball game ever? Out of the blue, someone handed me four free tickets to attend a Long Island Ducks game.

Long Island has its own baseball team, and the Long Island Ducks it is! They play at Citibank Park, Central Islip, Long Island, at their own stadium.

We had quite a lot of fun, although, to be honest I am so clueless about baseball that I could never tell who was winning!

The Long Island Ducks were playing against the Camden Riversharks, a visiting team from New Jersey.

It turned out that the Ducks won!

That is my daughter with QuackerJack, the team's mascot!

The evening went by quickly, between my attempts to follow the game and my many trips to the concession stands for a bite to eat or something to drink.

Thank you for the tickets! I am looking forward to my next game!

Color and form are important to me.

Dare I say, that I have good taste? If you are like me, and most people that I know; you probably think that you have good taste too. A bit of a grandiose belief about ourselves. But, hey, we are talking healthy egos here.

That is why, recently, I went into color shock. I can't tell you what color, where, why or how. But It was nature inspired, and I gasped for fresh air in the process.

There is something to be said for understated hues and neutrals. Please bring back beige. Boring, but so much more soothing to sensitive eyes.

Especially if the home is for sale. This is no time to exert your individuality.

Steamed Mussels, white wine, leeks, garlic and fries. Crispy Calamari, cherry peppers, garlic and spicy alioli. Coconut Shrimp, coconut flakes, sweet & sour sauce

After much alarm, and some rain, this tropical storm was not what it was made out to be. And I am glad.

Danny stayed far offshore.

Appointments were canceled and plans changed, but instead we took this opportunity to spend some time with visiting friends from New Jersey.

On Sunday, we drove to Westhampton Beach.

Some mad waves from the storm still remained, but we enjoyed a beach lunch at The Saltwater Grill. The Saltwater Grill is located at the Dune Deck Beach Resort, on Dune Road.

Since there were quite a few of us, we ordered practically everything on the menu to share.

Crab Fritters, Panko Crusted, Cajun Remoulade

Fish & Dips, Cajun Remoulade, Tequila Lime Alioli, Key Lime Tatar with Fries...

I did not get a picture of (but also very worthy of mention) their Pear & Gorgonzola Pizza with Mozzarella and caramelized onions, the Baja Fish Tacos, and their Watermelon & Feta Salad, the light vinaigrette that came with it was divine.

My friends didn't know what to make of my attempts to photograph the food.... Mad waves?... Maybe ... They don't know that I blog!

The food was delish! And the company even better...

Julie & Julia ~ BON APPÉTIT!

Food and blogs come together in Julie & Julia, with Meryl Streep & Amy Adams. Absolutely loved this movie. Wonderful story about a blogger that takes on the challenge of cooking every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. A parallel story about how the book came to be, and this young woman's big project of cooking all of Julia's recipes and blogging about it for a year.

After seeing this movie, I am motivated to go and get the book. No worries, I will not undertake a similar project to cook every recipe on Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and then blog about it. That would be a monumental project in my house. And I have my own private chef (hubby). But I am determined to cook more, and Boeuf Bourguignon a la Julia would be nice...

On another note, At Mirabelle Tavern at the Three Village Inn in Stony Brook, Chef Guy Reuge in honor of the film release, will be having a special promotion "Guy Cooks Julia" now through Labor Day, Monday, September 7. I am not missing this one!

Straight from the news, Long Island is officially on Danny alert!

Tropical Storm Danny strengthened and is headed for the East Coast. Not Fun.

Danny is not expected to make landfall here but residents are being warned to prepare for the possibility of high winds, heavy rains and flooding this weekend.

Be prepared, some suggestions:

Emergency radio
Flashlights
Extra batteries
Bottle water, juices and non-perishable packaged or canned food
First emergency kit with medicine and prescription drugs
Telephones, fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
Keep important documents such as insurance, medical records, Social Security card, and bank account numbers, in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag
Cash & Credit Cards, ATMs may not work
Full tank of gas

Hopefully all this won't be necessary, but it is always a good thing to be ready!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was our third museum this Summer. Since we did not go away this year, and we had our nephew visiting; I had to find things to do and places to visit with the children during their Summer vacation.

We had done quite a lot of sightseeing and trips to the beach on Long Island and we were ready for the city. So, over three weeks we chose a different museum every week.

Our city excursions proved to be not only fun, but also educational.

It had been a long time since my last visit to the Met, and I had forgotten how GRAND the Met is. These are some memorable shots of our recent visit.

MoMA

MoMA, of all the wonderful museums in NYC, this is my favorite. I went for the very first time as a young person, many years ago. Picasso was the reason, I had read about him and I was compelled to see his work. Guernica, his very important depiction of the Spanish Civil War, was on exhibit at the time. It is amazing that after many years at the Museum of Modern Art, I got to see it before it was returned to Spain in 1981. It made an impact on me.

Of all the modern masters, Picasso remains my favorite. His work, and that of other 19th & 20th Century great artists can be found on the fifth floor of MoMA.

It has become the Summer theme for us to visit museums in Manhattan. After our visit to the American Museum of Natural History, I decided that MoMA would be next.

Not exactly a children's museum -- kids can't help the giggles. We enjoyed the modern classics. But there was, without a doubt, an element of wonder at what art is, and how it is represented; hence the many smiles. Quite interesting.

Photography without flash is allowed, these are some of the highlights of our visit.

American Museum of Natural History

Day at the Museum!

...So we didn't spend the night, but the day was great! So much to see, didn't get to see it all, but had lots of fun and learned a little!

After, went for pizza at Patsy's, very good pizza (I might add)... So good we had two large pies, these are growing teenagers... It is hard to do fine dining with kids in the city, they ultimately want pizza! (No toppings!)

Patsy's is at 61 West 74th Street, short walk from the Museum. We were on the way back to our car, which I parked several blocks away on 71st & Columbus Ave, when we found Patsy's... Actually one of my sons, who is quite a pizza aficionado, found it. He can smell pizza blocks away...

We missed torrential rain, as we enjoyed our dinner, and left the restaurant with a mix of sunshine & rain... Skipped through the puddles all the way back!

I refuse to pay for a parking garage in Manhattan, but that is another story!

After a long cold Winter, and a mostly gray and rainy month of June--in fact one of the rainiest in history, remember my tomatoes?... I was so worry for them... I needed blue skies, Sun and warmth.

So, July came and at last it brought beautiful, perfect weather. When not working, I have been spending most of my time outdoors with the kids. I didn't forget about AR, in fact it has been much on my mind lately, and I have reasons to be most thankful to AR, more to come about this later... I just haven't been able to sit down and write.

We have a visiting nephew, he came June 29 and was supposed to be here with us for three weeks, leaving as a matter of fact tomorrow. But the kids have been having so much fun, that he will be staying for another three weeks! So... It is to beach most of the time.

That is the greatest thing about Summers and Long Island, it is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. And although, we haven't been to the city... Ahem -- Manhattan, lately, the possibility is always there and we are never too far away.

Love the beach, either 5 minutes away from our house on the North Shore, or about 45 minutes away... The Hamptons, simply world class beautiful, and the place to be for Manhattanites New Yorkers on weekends. I discovered it many years ago and I still love going there. Believe it or not is not about the beautiful people, but about its natural beauty. I have seen some pretty places, but nothing compares to it...

Rough seas late in the day... slightly overcast.... But Fun! :)

Tomatoes!

I have a friend who grows the best tomatoes I have ever had. Served with fresh mozzarella, basil and drizzled with olive oil, those tomatoes are quite a treat. I once even sliced them green, sprinkled them with salt and ate them just like that!...

Last year influenced by my friend's success with her beautiful garden, I tried to grow my own tomatoes. They were, well... nothing to brag about. I waited too long to pick them...

I was too busy working and with friends that came to visit for two weeks. ...So maybe we enjoyed one, of those less than stellar tomatoes.

I had practically given up on my ability to grow vegetables, fruits, tomatoes, when I ran into Donna Harris' Blog. Her enthusiasm for the Topsy Turvey method for growing tomatoes was too much, and inspired me to try it again this year.

I went around looking for the Topsy Turvey kit, but couldn't find it anywhere.

Just when I was ready to give up, I went to HomeDepot, they didn't have it either, but instead they were selling these cute little tomato plants.

I bought one. Now this little plant is my baby. I have been giving it love and Miracle-Gro and hope that soon I, too, will be able to enjoy my own homegrown tomatoes!

Now for the irony, today I was again at HomeDepot looking for some more gardening materials, when to my dismay, there it was the Topsy Turvey! ...Donna!
