ATTENTION WHALE WATCHERS

The Southern Oregon Coast is a great location if you are excited about watching for whales. The spring Whale Watching Week for 2008 is March 22^nd - March 29^th. The migrations are spread out for a few weeks on either side of "watch week." This is not the only time you can see the whales. Many so called "resident" gray whales also spend months near the Oregon Coast, especially in summer and fall! About 18,000 whales will pass by our coast during March, April, May and June on their way to Alaska's Bering Sea.

HARRIS BEACH STATE PARK

There are several Whale Watching Sites where you can watch for migrating gray whales and their babies. Some of the Brookings areas that have proved to be wonderful sites for whale watching are Harris Beach State Park, Cape Ferrelo, and Cape Sebastian. During Whale Watching Weeks you will find many, many people poised with binoculars patiently scanning the waters of the ocean for a glimpse of the whales. The Juveniles pass first followed by adults and last come the mother's with their babies. Many of them come close to shore to feed on the great food supply that the Oregon coastline affords. In April and May you might even get the opportunity to see mothers and calves resting in protected coves close to shore.

During the summer months there are about 200-400 whales that do not go as far north as Alaska to feed. There are generally feeding whales on the central coast from July through October and these whales may stay very close to shore while feeding and it is often easy to spot them.

For year round whale watchers, here are a few whale watching tips: Gray whales may possibly be seen year round on the Oregon, Washington and California coastlines. Warm, weather - appropriate clothing and binoculars really help! Morning light (with the sun at your back) is often helpful to spot blows first with your naked eye, then focus more closely with binoculars. Calmer days are better whale watching days, by land, sea, or air! Any spot with an ocean view may yield whale sightings.

Adventure on the Rogue!!

I recently had the opportunity to spend a day of adventure on the Rogue River out of Gold Beach Oregon. Gold Beach is a 30 minute drive north of Brookings and is where you can JET BOAT on the Rogue River. What fun!! You have several different rides to select from, but we decided to go for the longest ride of 104 miles round trip on JERRY'S ROGUE JETS.

We started our ride at the Port of Gold Beach and after everyone was loaded on the Jet Boat we started up river. It was a very chilly morning and everyone had jackets and/or sweaters on to keep warm. It was a bright sunny day and I knew it would get more than just a little warm once we were up river just a few miles. Our pilot, Tom Biggs, was well informed about the local area and specifically about the Rogue River. He has piloted a Jet Boat since 1975 and he is accomplished at spinning tall tales and relating local folklore, which makes the already beautiful trip more informative. He took the time to point out various wildlife living on the banks of the river, and even stopped so that we could take pictures. We saw three Bald Eagle nests and several of the young eagles that had been born this year. They were fabulous, and much bigger than I had believed them to be.

We powered thru white water, riffles and eddies and long pools of beautiful slack water. As our trip progressed we could feel the pristine rhythm of the river as we sliced through thundering rapids and coasted through gentle shallows where our pilot, Tom, would stop so we could enjoy the natural inhabitants of the Rogue ecosystem - bear, deer, otter, and eagles. We also saw blue heron, osprey, and turtles that were taking in the sunshine on the river rocks. And of course, we saw fish. Our river pilot, Tom, informed us that although there are two major runs for the salmon and steelhead there are fish in the Rogue all year round. He said that you can catch Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, brown trout, cutthroat, golden trout, catfish and in the lower part of the river there are still sturgeon. The Chinook and steelhead run in the fall and spring to spawn upriver, and there is also a Coho run in the fall. Since the Rogue is one of eight rivers in the United States designated as wild and scenic it will always be a protected area.

We were not the only adventurers on the river, there were several groups of rafters that we saw during our trip. There are several guided rafting trips that can be taken on the Rogue River. Everyone that was rafting seemed to be having a wonderful time and we experienced water fights with many of them. It sure helped to cool us off, since it became very hot upriver.

We stopped for lunch at a wonderful river lodge, Singing Springs Resort, and had time to enjoy the excellent food that we were served. We ate our lunch on the resort's outside dining deck that overlooks the river.

The Rogue's combination of fun and exciting rapids, hiking trails that parallel the river, spectacular scenery, historic settler sites and the chance to glimpse wildlife, make this one of the best trips on the Southern Oregon Coast. We had a WONDERFUL time!!

STILL ON THE JOURNEY!!

I have recently have been doing a study that looks at the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and I learned so much from it.

I never really understood that the trip from Egypt to Israel was only 12 miles of a straight walk. And it took them 40 years to make that trip because they kept wandering in the desert. When you look at all that happened to them during that time, they made so many unwise decisions that led to painful consequences over and over again. For many of the Israelites the DREAM of entering the Promised Land would not be realized. This learning process was not something that they enjoyed, but after finally learning to honor, trust, and follow the path that God had for them, they were able to cross over into Israel and it really was into the Promised Land.

I have been reading two books that have really helped me to begin to understand some of the trials that I have faced in the last several years. "The DreamGiver" by Bruce Wilkinson, and "Shattered Dreams God's Unexpected Pathway to Joy" by Larry Crabb. Both of these books talk about how not one single person goes through life without suffering some kind of shattered dream. When you go through suffering and pain, that is when it is hardest to have faith and continue to develop a relationship with God. That has been so true for me, and I am finding that after so many years it is time for me to discover what God made me to be!! Before I can make any kind of progress and move forward I need to tell people that have hurt me that I do forgive them for the hurt and the pain that encompassed our lives. I was just wandering in the desert trying to forget and not deal with any of the feelings and loss that I had suffered. But the feeling were just eating at my soul and keeping me from entering into any kind of healthy, loving, supportive relationships. I also began to realize that I must ask every person that I had hurt, or harbored resentment against, to please forgive me. I do not know what is going to happen in the future, but I do know that I want to start pursuing whatever dream God has for me.

I read in one of my books the following four truths:

Life includes suffering, but life is good. In this world, Jesus' followers and everyone else will suffer tribulation. But Jesus has made a way for us to satisfy our deepest desire in the midst of unrelieved pain.

The cause of all suffering is separation. We are separated from God - and from our own deepest desire, our longing for God - and we're therefore deceived into looking elsewhere for joy. That sets us off on the ultimate wild goose chase. Nothing but God satisfies our most profound desire.

The way to handle suffering is to discover your desire for God. Then everything, both good and bad, becomes redemptive. It moves us toward the God we desire. Enter your thirst. Feel your ache, the very worst ache that throbs in your soul. Face how you harm others, your spouse, your children, your friends. And face your disappointment with them. Eventually, you will seek God for..

..........forgiveness of your failure to love.
..........the love you desire.
..........empowerment to love others.
..........hope that one day you will revel in love freely given and freely received in a perfect Community of lovers.

The new life provided through Jesus must be accepted as a gift of love. We then spend the rest of our days discovering our desire to know God better, and we come to realize it's a desire whose satisfaction no shattered dream can thwart.

Regard brokenness as an opportunity, as the chance to discover a desire that no brokenness can eliminate but that only brokenness reveals. Remember what brokenness is. It's the awareness that you long to be someone you're not and cannot be without divine help. Never pretend to God or to yourself that you feel what you don't or that you are what you're not. These four truths really make me think about how I am handling my life. I do not know how long it might take, but I am going to move forward and try to discover how to have the relationship with God that helps me to know him better and how to follow whatever dream God has made me to fill. I know it has to be better than what I have been doing and I am looking forward to the adventure.

WHY BROOKINGS OREGON? Part 1

WHY BROOKINGS OREGON?

When I think about an informational post for Brookings Oregon so many topics come to mind that I have decided to do this post in chapters. One of the first things that you should know is that Brookings Oregon is the Southern most town on the magnificent Ocean Coast. We are located just 6 miles from the Northern California border and you will find some of the most stunning coastal scenery to experience.

The exceptionally mild climate on the Southern Oregon coast gives Brookings its name of "Oregon's Banana Belt" and "Home of Winter Flowers". When the flowers are in bloom the fragrance and the beauty will give you many hours of enjoyment in the local Azalea Park as well as the surrounding state parks.

It is not uncommon to have temperate weather all year long with the temperatures commonly averaging around 68 degrees. Brookings winters can be wet with most of the rain falling between November and April. Winter weather generally has temperatures remaining between the 50's and 60's, cooling down into the 40's at night. However, even in January and February you can still expect to see sunny weather and often temperatures will reach 70 degrees. It is rare to have snow fall, and freezing temperatures are uncommon. When the inland temperatures reach the 100's, Brookings will remain cool with some foggy mornings. No wonder Brookings is such a well-known vacation and retirement area. When you are surrounded by such beauty and the sights and sounds of the Pacific Ocean, why would you want to be anywhere else??

We are fortunate to have the Port of Brookings/Harbor which is one of the prettiest and the busiest recreational port on the Southern Oregon Coast.

The business shops located in the Port are varied and include shops located in the commercial retail center, restaurants, charter services, tackle shop, and several other businesses located around the Port. Some of the services available include: A Full Service Marina, a Six-lane launch ramp and travel-lift services, Full services for the Commercial Fleet, Docks and moorage facilities, and Ocean Front RV Park and Camping. The Beachfront RV Parkis right on the beach and is incredibly busy. So if you plan on visiting make sure to call 541-469-5867 to check for availability and make reservations.

There are several events held at the Port for locals and visitors to enjoy and participate in. The events held every year include:

Brookings is also one of the most popular places for Sport Fishing.
The town is situated between two large rivers, the Chetco and the Winchuck. The Chetco River is known throughout Oregon as one of the best for Salmon and Steelhead fishing. There are several businesses that offer the opportunity for Sport-fishing on the river or head out to sea for salmon and bottom-fishing trips. The Chetco River is also ideal if you are interested in swimming, canoing, rafting, or kayaking. So if you are interested in doing some serious fishing, Brookings will quickly become one of your favorite places to be.

When I first moved to Brookings Oregon there were several things that I needed to know about the community and services that were available for children with disabilities. I am the parent of a wonderful child who has Autism and we had been living in Tucson Arizona where I did not have to search for services, the services searched for us. So when I first arrived in Brookings it was difficult for me to find the information that I needed to put all the services for David into place. It was a long grueling process to find all the providers and locations that these services were located at. Since Brookings is a very small rural community I found out that many of the services we needed were located as much as two hours from our new home. If you have ever traveled with children for any distance, you know that it can be a challenge. Since David has such a hard time traveling for any distance, the two hour trip could sometimes take up to 5 hours for us. I am not sure I would have relocated here if I had known that this would have been such an issue for us. So I have made it a point to have as much information available as I can about the services that are available here for both children and adults with disabilities so that I am able to provide this to potential home buyers.

Here are some of the areas that I believe real estate agents should have information available, especially when located in small and/or rural communities.

The local schools and programs that are available for children with disabilities. This includes early intervention programs, pre-schools, elementary, junior, and high school programs. How are these programs run, do these programs provide inclusion for the children with disabilities, and what kind of a reputation do these programs have.
Is there an adequate number of doctors, dentists, physical therapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists that provide services for individuals with disabilities (both children and adults).
Is there a local hospital. If not, where is the nearest hospital located.
Are there adequate emergency services available. (ambulance, fire department, police)
Is there a local department of developmental disabilities agency and a local mental health facility. If not, where is the nearest area these agencies are located in.
Is there a Veterans Clinic or Hospital. If not, where are the closest located.
Are there In-Home Health Care Services available.
Are there services such as: Vocational, Rehabilitation, Adult Care Homes, Independent Living Skills, Job Coaching, Mentoring, Special Olympics, Post High School, Group Homes
Are there disability support services such as: Autism Specialists, Respite, Transportation
Are the sidewalks, stores, parking lots, and buildings handicapped accessible

I have found that if you have information available on these topics and you are familiar with these topics, it will help potential home buyers to make an informed decision about relocating to your area. It will also make it much easier for persons with disabilities to locate the services that they may be in need of procuring.

As a parent of a child with disabilities I know first hand how important it is that you treat everyone with respect and I believe in "People First Language". By including information about services that are available to individuals with disabilities, you can help home buyers feel much more confident about making a decision to relocate to your area. This is the kind of information that every individual has some sort of an interest in, after all, everyone will have some kind of a disability occur in their lifetime. It may be at birth or through an accident or the aging process. So be prepared and make sure you are able to provide this information to the home buyers that you encounter.

I would like to thank everyone that has made comments on my 1st post. I have been reading all of the comments and several blogs that others have posted. I have been much more comfortable reading all the blogs and digesting the information that is out here on AR, than I am with posting. Many of the blogs that I have been reading have given me information that has proved to be very helpful in many areas of my real estate business. I have been concentrating on updating my website and trying to understand how to implement this SEO gobbly goop. The more I read about SEO the more confused I get. If anyone could give me a push in the direction of UNDERSTANDING how SEO works and how to bring my website up in the search engines, please let me know. My website is

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I do not really know what I am doing. I have been a member of ActiveRain for a couple of days and I have already learned a great deal. There is so much wonderful information that it is hard to digest all of it. I have been on the computer reading through posts and blogs for most of the day and all evening and I think I have barely scratched the surface. Hopefully I will get the hang of this and I truely believe I will be learning something everytime I logon to this site.
