Thanksgiving Day -- family, food, fun. Time to reflect on our bounties. Time to share with others.

Participating in the 5th annual Silicon Valley Turkey Trot was a wonderful way to start the day. To date, this event has raised over $750,000 for charities, including the Santa Clara County Family Health Foundation, the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, and Second Harvest Food Bank. 9500 participants were expected this year (our bibb numbers were 10,732 & 10,733), so the funds will increase.

How wonderful to be able to share a beautiful day, in a lovely city, in the company of happy, generous people.

I gathered a wealth of information, and now the challenge is get my head to stop spinning with the myriad of ideas that are careening around, and focus on implementing just one or two new ideas. (Gotta hurry up, since San Francisco Rain Camp is less than 3 weeks away, and I'll be inundated with another set of ideas.

Look for more information in a few days, but for now, I recommend you go to Jerry's web site and get to know him, sign up for his e-letter, and learn lots.

And if you have the opportunity to take GRI Course 107--whether you plan to take the entire series or already have--jump at it! This is right up our alley.

4 Simple Steps to Memorable Yet Unique Passwords

In today's newsletter from an excellent mortgage banker, Caroline Wolf, of Princeton Capital, came these tips on creating passwords. I hadn't thought about using an acronym, but it seems like a great idea. Thought I'd pass them along to you:

4 Simple Steps to Memorable, Yet Unique Passwords

Good passwords come down to two things: (1) they're easy for you to remember and (2) they're hard for others to break. Here's a sure-fire tip that can help you achieve both!

Think up a phrase. Instead of a common word or family member's name, think up a unique phrase that only you know. For example, you may think up something off the wall such as "I Like Short Hair Too."
Make it an acronym. In our example, "I Like Short Hair Too" would become ILSHT.
Add Complexity. Remember those substitutes you're not supposed to use with common dictionary words? Well, you CAN use them with your acronym. For example, "I Like Short Hair Too" can become "1 Like $hort Hair 2" which makes: 1L$H2. You can also use upper and lower letters to make it 1L$h2. The point is to be creative, but in a way that you can easily remember it.
Make it unique. A password is only really unique if you use it for one account and one account only. So you can't just use 1L$h2 for every account. And, in reality it's still too short. Here's the key to the whole process: Mix in additional letters and numbers that are unique to each account. For example, if you're logging into a "gmail account" you can use the "gm" and "@cct" (for acct) to make: 1L$h2gM@cct. Then, for a Netflix account, you may use: 1L$h2Nf@cct. That way, you're passwords will be hard for others to guess and unique to each account, but also easy for you to remember!

Of course, these are just examples. You'll want to be creative and think up your own acronym and ways to add unique characters for each account. And then keep that little secret to yourself so no one will be able to guess your account passwords.

Yesterday I attended another Senior Roundtable meeting, and came away feeling so fortunate to have this resource available. And happy that fellow Active Rainer Skip Frenzel introduced me to this group.

On a monthly basis professionals who work with Seniors in some capacity or other meet to network, share information and learn from a featured speaker and each other. I've met professional organizers, lawyers specializing in Seniors issues, accountants, representatives from mobility companies, a designer of clothing created for disabled or elderly persons -- a wealth of services that can be of benefit to my Senior clients.

I'm developing a great list of service providers to help my clients when they don't know where to look for solutions to a problem.

San Carlos, CA, and the housing storm

I guess because bad news sells, newspapers often "report" doom and gloom stories about real estate.

How refreshing to read in the San Jose Mercury News earlier this week that our town, San Carlos, has fared quite well these last couple of years.

As report by the Merc, median price of a single-family home here has dropped 10% in the past year, while the condo/townhouse dip was 9%.

Real estate is, indeed, local.

Yesterday I read Bernice Ross' column in Inman News and as I usually do when reading Bernice's articles, learned something new. Yesterday I came away with the web site, crimereports.com

Interesting tool! Type in your address, (or any address) and see what goes on that you hadn't hear about! Comes with the caveat of also checking with the local law enforcement agencies if you have concerns or want more specifics about certain areas.

Is the Silicon Valley ready for a rebound?

Yesterday as I was out running, I thought about two reports I read last Friday in the San Jose Mercury.

The first was about Rosetta Stone's strong public debut on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares surged close to 40 percent on Thursday. It was the second IPO of the week. (Rosetta Stone provides language learning software in a multitude of languages.)

The other, an article entitled, "4^th Month is a Row: Valley Home Sales Ahead of a Year Ago" by Sue McAllister ponders if the housing market in Silicon Valley has reach a bottom. REO's routinely generate multiple offers, with sales prices over list. These are usually the less expensive homes, but prices appear to be flattening out. The high end of the market remains soft, with scarcity of jumbo mortgages and job losses in the tech sector being two concerns. But, many Realtors are seeing increased sales in the last few weeks and strong interest from buyers.

Welcome change might be near. And it's starting with a positive headline in a major newspaper!

Wow--Isn't that Gorgeous?

I've written about this condo in earlier posts, (scroll down my blog to see Are you Familiar with Walkscore and Condo Life For Us!) I've even made my first-ever U-Tube video describing it.

We spent the month of March enjoying it on weekends and sharing it with friends. It is fabulous--everything we dreamed about. There are 70 active listings for single-family homes in San Carlos, CA this morning. 25 homes have pending sales, an absorption rate of approximately 3 months.

Condominiums and townhouses tell a different story, however, with 28 active listings and only 5 pending sales.

There are tremendous opportunities today for investors, first-time buyers, parents wishing to help children get established, children wishing to help parents downsize, etc.

Last week I had a phone call from a woman on the other side of the country who was searching the web, looking for ways to help her elderly grandparents who, she felt, were the victims of elder fraud.

She told a chilling story of a real estate agent who first said there was a 6% commission, then wrote up papers for a 12% commission, then proceeded to ask the owners how much they hoped to clear from the sale, and proposed to talk any amount over and above that.

Her Google search came up with a blog I wrote in July about the Elder Abuse Hotline in California. When she called, I was able to do two things:

Assure her that she was absolutely right in being concerned
Give her the telephone number for the Orange County hotline

I asked her to email or call me again, but neglected to get her contact information. So while I might never learn the outcome of this, I am grateful that I had posted the information, and can only hope that she's able to get the assistance she needs.

Please never feel a post isn't worth the effort; it can truly make a difference.

Insurance tips for Sellers - Part II

Mike Kelty, of State Farm Insurance, also advises sellers to:

•· Eliminate any potential tripping hazards, such as small rugs, that anyonen could trip or slip on. Avoid shiny but slippery waxes and treatments on smooth or exposed flooring

•· Make sure your insurance policy liability is adequate. $1,000,000 is typically a safe level of protection for many people. You should have a Personal Liability Umbrella as a piece of your ongoing insurance protection portfolio.

•· Make certain that all outdoor areas, yards, patios, and pathways, are free of debris. Leaves, pine needles, etc., can be very slick and slippery, particularly when wet.

•· Change sprinkler timers to go on early in the AM to assure that the outside walkways will be dry when someone views the home.

•· Dogs and cats must always be accounted for, for both the prospective buyer's safety and the safety of the animals.

Here are some insurance tips for sellers provided by Mike Kelty of State Farm Insurance for a Sellers' Seminar I prepared:

•· Remove any/all jewelry from bedrooms. Keep that jewelry in: a safe at your home, a safe deposit box, on your person, or at a family member's home during open houses. Any time others have access to your home via a lock box, all valuables must be in a secure place.

•· The sme advice applies for guns, firearms, and valuable small items on tables or visible surfaces.

•· Make certain that spare house and car keys are removed from key racks and garages.

•· Money is not secure in drawers!

•· On moving day, all jewelry, guns, firearms and small valuables should be removed prior to the arrival of the movers. The loss of the items is a very significant and constant problem.

I would love to introduce you to our new dream. This is the view from the living room and master bedroom of the condo that my husband and I are buying in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. This view alone had us hooked and we just fell in love--looking down on Fort Mason, across the bay to Angel Island, Tiburon, Sausalito--what could be better? San Carlos, CA, and the housing storm

I guess because bad news sells, newspapers often "report" doom and gloom stories about real estate.

How refreshing to read in the San Jose Mercury News earlier this week that our town, San Carlos, has fared quite well these last couple of years.

As report by the Merc, median price of a single-family home here has dropped 10% in the past year, while the condo/townhouse dip was 9%.

Real estate is, indeed, local.
