Great Lakes Region is still a good buy and won't last forever!

Greetings from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, yes, where "Yoopers" live, work and play. If you're from Michigan or the surrounding Great Lakes States, you probably know right where we're at. If you're from anywhere else, you may have never heard of us or you actually found us and traveled here on vacation. We're 50 mi. south of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada, 300 miles due north of Detroit, smack in the middle of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and connected by the famous Mackinac Bridge. The city of St. Ignace was founded in 1676 so we've been around a while.

I love to travel and am always interested in stories of how people end up where they do, whether it's was on vacation, job transfer or have roots there. how they found it and so on. I volunteer in the tourism business so I'm really amazed at how many people have never heard of or crossed the Mackinac Bridge. That's incredible to us because it's so massive and such a big part of Michigan's travel structure and history. It links the two peninsulas of Michigan. The Big Mac just celebrated it's 50th birthday and it was a pretty big deal. The area is steeped in history, much, the foundation for our entire country.

If you can't tell, I love this place and I love the northern Real Estate business. I'm happy to share information about our area and encourage people to visit here or move here too! Our summer weather is probably the best in the country. We don't have tornado's, hurricanes or floods, just an occasional snow storm (which we prefer to watch from inside in P.J.'s). Having the opportunity to live and work in this Great Lakes Region is a privilege for me and I don't take it lightly.

The Straits of Mackinac is one of the most gorgeous places in the world and I encourage you to experience it yourself. This 4 season area has many festivals, car and truck shows and activities to entertain people from all walks of life. Check out our local St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce for a calendar of events and more.

We live in an area that will continue to be popular and values here should be of interest to many people. We've got what a lot of people want, woods, water, small town community, museums, history, waterfront restaurants, shopping, casinos and more. The prices are still affordable and the scenery and lifestyle only gets better.

U.P. Cheryl,

Living in Michigan's Upper Penninsula at the Straits of Mackinac

So many people seem to be curious about the people and lifestyle of Northern Michigan and more specific, the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Great Lakes region. Yes, they call us "Yoopers". Once a Detroit girl, I got transplanted to the U.P. as a teenager. If anyone knows Michigan, that's 300 miles straight north and at the time, quite the culture shock. Now I LOVE this small waterfront community and because in my travels, many people don't know where we're located, I thought I'd just jump in to this Active Rain Community and share information about our area, market and in general and see what unfolds.

I have had many careers in my life but feel most fortunate to have discovered the real estate industry (OK, most days). Living and working in a small community like St. Ignace is challenging and rewarding and rarely a dull moment. Always new people, new discoveries and adventures. New daily challenges keep me on my toes especially in this strange Michigan market.

I have met so many people and made so many friends over the years since I got involved in the industry and look forward to each day regardless of it being work related or social. I really encourage people to become involved with their communities. Being involved with the local Chambers of Commerc and other organizations has really broadened my awareness of the area, region and the needs and challenges of our tourism industry. If anyone ever has time on their hands, volunteer to a community organization. "Giving Back" to your community is a wonderful opportunity to help make a difference (AND YOU CAN) and you'll even feel good about it.

"So much to do, so little time". Boy, isn't that the truth. I have to chuckle when people ask "What do you do up here all year". OK, because we live in a 4-season area where snow is part of our lives, doesn't mean life ends in December. Four season living is fabulous, skiing, snowmobiling, icefishing, snowshoeing, spectacular fall color season, & then the other 5 months, spring & summer, (golf boating, beaches, fishing, & festivals all over)(OK, maybe I'd throw back a month or two) but can't imagine living anywhere else most of the time. It's something about the lakes and natural beauty of the region. You get it in your blood and you become addicted to it. When looking to travel, I find myself booking travel based on what is the closest body of water. You'd think living here one may tire of it but never. The lakes, rivers and wild beaches along with the green forests and plentiful trail systems keeps us busy year-round.

Starting my own company in 1998 was pretty scary, not knowing if I could compete with the bigger franchise companies . Almost 10 years later, it's pretty clear, it's not all about "big" but it's the personal service, the ability to communicate with people and help meet their needs while being able to laugh at yourself, your challenges, mistakes and be a real person, honest and forthright. You can't be everything to everybody, the sooner you realize that the easier it gets.

Mackinac Properties Real Estate and Vacation Rentals
