December 10th 2009 is the Last Day for the Catawba County Bikes for Tykes Program

The Hickory Fire Department, in conjunction with the Christmas Bureau, is asking for new and like new bikes and tricycles for needy children to be given out at Christmas time.

Last year 615 brand new bikes and 500 helmets were donated.

If you have a bike or tricycle that you would like to donate, please drop them off at any of the Hickory fire stations between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

The main drop off point will be fire station #5 located on Sweetwater Road.

Persons needing directions or having questions, please call 828-323-7420.

The "Bikes for Tykes" program is an effort to benefit needy children served by the Catawba County Christmas Bureau.

The toys will then be distributed through the Catawba County Christmas Bureau at the American Legion Fairgrounds in December.

A bookfair Dec. 11 and 12, hosted by Barnes & Noble in Hickory, will support science education, programs and exhibits at Catawba Science Center, a nonprofit science and technology museum featuring aquaria and a digital planetarium.

For each purchase made that is accompanied by a bookfair voucher, Barnes & Noble will donate a percentage of sales to Catawba Science Center. Books, magazines, CDs and café purchases are included.

Bookfair vouchers are available for download at www.CatawbaScience.org and at Catawba Science Center, located on the SALT Block, at 243 Third Ave. NE, Hickory. Vouchers will also be available at Barnes & Noble in Hickory during both days of the book fair.

at the Catawba Science Center

November 27 - December 31, 2009

Kick off your holiday season with sparkling laser lights and sounds of the season at Catawba Science Center in Hickory.

Starting Friday, Nov. 27, CSC will begin showing Laser Holidays in the Millholland Planetarium theater.

A family friendly holiday laser light show, Laser Holidays features modern and classic holiday songs set to mesmerizing laser lights.

Seasonal selections include Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Smashing Pumpkins' "Christmastime" and more.

Total running time for this laser show is 38 minutes.

Laser Holidays is part of a special planetarium schedule Friday, Nov. 27 and will show at 11:30 a.m. & 4 p.m. Additional shows that day include The Little Star That Could at 1:30 p.m. and Two Small Pieces of Glass at 3 p.m.

Friday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m

Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright will turn on the "official light switch" in the Flag Court on Union Square that will light up the trees and poles throughout the Downtown Hickory area.

The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., and Mayor Wright will turn on the lights about 7 p.m. Festivities on Union Square will continue until 8 p.m.

Santa Claus will be at the entire event greeting kids of all ages and the CVCC Brass Ensemble will perform Christmas Carols after the lights have been turned on.

Many of Downtown Hickory's businesses will be open and all the restaurants welcome citizens to enjoy a delicious dinner in the heart of the city.

Saturday, December 5, at 4 p.m. the Hickory Jaycees Holiday Parade will be held in Downtown Hickory.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY ON ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6 through SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2009

Appliance stores hope the state's second annual sales tax holiday on Energy Star appliances this weekend will help stimulate business.

To increase the chances of that happening, many retailers are extending hours and offering additional discounts on top of the tax savings to try to entice shoppers to buy.

The tax holiday, works much like the school supplies sales tax holiday North Carolina holds each August, except that now it's Energy Star-rated appliances that are exempt from the tax.

In Catawba County, where the combined sales tax rate is 8 percent, a consumer would save $40 in taxes on a $500 appliance.

Savings are likely to be greater than that, as appliance dealers hold promotions and sales in conjunction with the sales tax holiday.

Lowe's Home Improvement stores are among major retailers in North Carolina offering discounts on appliances this weekend.

Items included in the tax holiday are products that meet the Energy Star requirements and are authorized to carry the Energy Star label, including clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators, central air conditioners, room air conditioners, air source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.

While dishwashers are not included, some dealers will discount Energy Star-rated models this weekend.
There is no price limit or ceiling for products to qualify.

Items purchased for use in a business do not qualify for tax exemption.

Energy Star-qualified products use up to 50 percent less energy than older models or less-efficient counterparts currently on the market.
