Oh Happy Day! Almost. Popular Lake Charles DeAngelos Restaurant to re-open soon

Last week, I spoke with the very nice, ever capable Cody Louviere of DeAngelos. Cody clarified that the rumors for an early November re-opening of one of the most popular Lake Charles restaurants are true. My impression is that the opening is not going to be officially advertised, but for those who keep asking "When will DeAngelos Open?" the answer is that the doors will be open to the public this Friday.

From my sort-of-across-the-street vantage point, I've watched the new building rise with the same anticipation and hunger pangs as the many other, loyal DeAngelos patrons. Finally, Margaret Place residents can once again walk to this great dining establishment.

There are so many bullet points as to why DeAngelos was and will continue to be one of the most popular Lake Charles restaurants. Service and food are, of course, at the top of the list.

The first thing I asked Cody about was the staff. 'How many of the old guard will return?" The two Sara's, Christine, Lauren, Jennifer, and of course, Cody are the names I remember Cody listing. I apologize for any I failed to list.

My first impression of the new staff as they walked the parking lot they rent from me recently was excellent. I received positive vibes that they are as excited about the new building and the opportunity to work at one of the most popular restaurants in Lake Charles.

To say that we missed DeAngelos is a massive understatement. I suspect the new hires already know they are about to engage in work at a particularly special restaurant with a clientelle that appreciates excellence in service and food. Which leads to my next questiion of Cody.

"Tell me about the menu...and that you're keeping the old favorites." Cody assured me that I'd be able to get my fix on the familiar Italian Flatbread, their amazing Pizza's, Calzones, salads, etc. Of special note are the additions to the DeAngelos menu that I did not expect, but will undoubtedly enjoy. For fear that not all the new menu items will be served on opening day, I'm going to hold off mentioning the additions, but know that anything that comes from the DeAngelos kitchen will be awesome. At this point in the conversation with Cody, my taste buds went into overdrive and early-November seemed as far away as Christmas to a 6-year old!

Since my conversation with Cody, I snuck in a few evenings ago and was lucky enough to receive a tour by co-owner Ritchie Gregory.

The new restaurant and bar at one of the most popular Lake Charles restaurant is larger, yet retains the same sense of charm and intimacy as before. I was, of course :), particularily impressed with the bar. It is quite beautiful and much more functional than before. The lighting, woodwork, and layout are all improvements over an already impressive location.

Can't wait to see the "regulars" and new faces! Oh Happy Day!

What Lake Charles did and is doing to fight Lung Cancer

Recognizing the need for more research dollars to fight lung cancer, a core group of Southwest Louisiana residents met over a year ago to discuss what they could do to take part in this battle.

One of their first actions was to join forces with the National Lung Care Partnership. From this alliance, they learned about the "Free to Breath" walks which were proposed as a cross-country effort to raise awareness and funds about Lung Cancer.

The Lake Area responded raising over $110,000 along with an increase in the awareness of the impact of Lung Cancer.

What sort of awareness? An example that struck many of the 1,200 people who registered for the Lake Area Run.... Lung cancer takes the lives of more women each year than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined.

The date for the Lake Charles 2010 Free to Breath run to be held in Lake Charles is set for March 27th. Obviously, that core group grew to a rather impressive bunch of dedicated volunteers who have already started planning for the March 27th event.

Water frontage land for sale on Shell Beach Drive on Lake Charles

Most every city has an extra special area, but not every city offers something like this land for sale on Shell Beach Drive in Lake Charles, LA.

And, even in Lake Charles, the availability of water frontage land for sale on Shell Beach Drive is a rarity.

In the Lake Area, practically everyone endulges in a holiday drive to take in the Christmas lighting. A tour of this area is often placed on the agenda when friends or family visit and for leisurely Sunday drives.

A few weeks ago, I met with an owner to walk his property along the Calcasieu River. Our specific destination? The River.

I had "googled" a map of the 17 acres earlier and could see from the satelitte view that it offered a unique perspective of the river. Like others, I had driven by it along Theriot road for years, imagining the tree-protected view.

My enthusiasm to personally witness nature at its best was unaffected by the fact that it was very cold and I knew our trek to the river's edge would be through some extremely dense sections.

Within an hour or so, we found ourselves mid-way along the westernmost 1/2 of the river's edge. The owner's effort with his machette was well rewarded. The beautiful vista of water, spanish moss, and cypress knees was enhanced by the absolute lack of homes across the river.

My photos, presented on CalcasieuRiver.com along with the satelitte view, also presented on the website, come close to capturing the spectacular east-west and Southern view of the river, but fall short of "being there."

Today, as I watched the "for sale" sign being erected, a neighbor drove up to talk. He told me that he had grown up next door and knew the property well. He was surprised to have learned that the property was for sale noting tht many had lusted for it over the years.

In his view, this location offers "one of the most beautiful views of the river" in Moss Bluff. I agree!

Because of the density, the For Sale sign also reads, "Posted. No Trespassing." But guess who has the owner's permission to re-visit the river's edge? I eagerly await my next "walk to the river!"

Getting to Prejean Park is easy. From Prien Lake, head south on Louisiana Avenue to Illinois. Turn left (east) on Illinois. The baseball park is just beyound Brentwood Street on the left.

4th in the World, 1st in the hearts of Lake Charles!

Some would say that is was not a banner weekend for the team from South Lake Charles. Obviously, it would have been great to be watching our guys right now in the final game of the 2008 World Series.

At the end of the day, the South Lake Charles Little League team spent all or part of their summer vacation doing something over 6200 teams could only consider in their dreams. And, along the way, they captured our hearts.

They started by becoming the Louisiana Little League Champions. This was a significant as Louisiana has a host of talent, including our ultimate challenger from neighboring Lafayette.

Then, they brought pride and recognition to Lake Charles and Louisiana by winning the Southwest Regional Championship. It was a privilege to be there in person to watch South Lake Charles play in Waco and a thrill to watch the game where Kennon Fontenot's home run tied the game and forced an extra inning. An inning that SLC ultimately won courtesy of a valiant team effort.

With barely a few days rest, the team traveled on to Williamsport to represent the Southwest Region in the Little League Baseball World Series. They accomplished something 4 previous Lake Charles teams had attempted. Not only did they win pool play, but finished in first position. They advanced to the US Finals against Hawaii.

In a game that will be talked about and second-guessed for some time, Lake Charles played Hawaii in front of a record-breaking crowd. Hawaii prevailed (7-5) and represents the West Region against Mexico in the World Series finals as I write this.

Sure, it would have been great to be in the finals, but what a thrill to compete so well against Japan in the consolation game. Given Japan's record for winning it all, the SLC team was in darn good company and held their own!

So guys, hold your heads and banners high! You brought pride to your hometown and have bragging rights as one of the top 4 teams in the World!

South Lake Charles Little League and the Hobo Hotel for Cats Auction

Not satisfied with being the first team from Lake Charles Louisiana to advance out of Little League World Series (LLWS) pool play, the South Lake Charles (SLC) Little League team took a shot at the semi-finals last night and won 6-1 against the team representing the Southeast region, Tampa, Florida.

I was unable to watch the game live due to a previous commitment to help out at a local auction. To make matters worse, auctioneer Ben Mount had given me strict instructions to keep any knowledge of the score to myself. As the manager/coach of the 2001 Louisiana Champions that went to the LLWS, Ben has been following the games closely. At his request, earlier in the day, I had made contact with shortstop/pitcher Kennon Fontentot's mom, Shelley, to arrange for a signed baseball and poster for the auction.

Putting the game out of my head for a few hours, even for the sake of the auction, was not an option. As luck would have it, my job was to simply monitor a video being displayed via my PC and projector. This was perfect as it gave me an opportunity to easily listen to Robert Ryder's play-by-play account directly from Lamade stadium via cell phone. That covered, I settled in- get this - behind the bar! Honestly, the bar offered the best postion to project the video on to the screen. Honest.

From this vantage point, I did my fair share of promoting the New Orleans train tour for 20, the topic of the video and a subject for a future blog. It also gave me a chance to visit with fellow baseball enthusiasts, including a die-hard fan and cat lover who had determined he and his wife would enjoy the cocktail hour, identify the live auction item they wanted, find someone to bid on their behalf and leave in time to watch Kennon Fontenot pitch. Guess who was the lucky recipient of their auction paddle? Say goodby to the easy job assignment. A dinner for 8 prepared by fellow REALTOR and CCIM Andrew Vanchiere was at stake. Oh, the pressure.

I learned two things last night.

1. Robert Ryder would probably be as effective as a sports commentator as he was a pilot for United.

2. I'm a rotten auction bidder.

In my defense, one caused the other. The screaming SLC fans in the background of Robert's cell phone, the score SLC 3- Tampa 1, Kennon on the mound, and it's time for Ben to start the bidding for the Vanchiere dinner. I tried to play it cool and casual, not entering the bidding action right away, still following the game. I think I held up the #68 paddle at $550. In increments of $50, the bids climbed to $900. I bid $950. Robert's enthusiasm, the screaming fans, a budget of 1,200, the cause. I bid $1,000. Obviously, my head wasn't 100% in the bidding game, but either my bid/war competitor figured I was gonna get this dinner come heck or high water, or simply figured they better let it be before I went further out in left field. Either way, my job was accomplished with $200.00 to spare!

Next item. A baseball signed by the SLC team. True to my pledge to Ben, I kept the score to myself. Without knowing that SLC was winning, the baseball went for $175.00. I stopped at $150.00 despite Judith Smith encouraging me to "go for it" as she knew the budget, knew the people.

The last item was the signed poster of Lamade Stadium. Got it for $100.00 and still $100.00 under budget. Surely, this would make up for the $50.00 error!

Score $275.00 for the no-kill cat shelter, courtesy of South Lake Little League!

Auction's over. Robert is still providing commentary but knows I continue in my dual capacity. I congratulate Ben for his awesome job. He says, "You know the score, don't you." Prepared for this question, poker-faced, I reply. "Yes." He asked, "Is it over?" I reply, 'No." He asked, "What's the score?" I reply, "You said you didn't want to know." He says, "Tell me the score!" As I give him the updated 5-1 score, I turn my cell to speaker phone so Ben and others can enjoy. Willie Mount Vanna White happily announces the score to those relishing the success of the auction. Before we leave the auction, SLC puts the thing to bed 6-1.

Now, let's go watch that game!

{Edit 5:15PM on 8/22/08: Having contacted the winner of the Vancherie dinner, I have permission to reveal names! I was representing Frank and Ginger Pruit in pursuit of the Vancherie dinner. And, they laughed off my error in deference to their support of the Hobo Hotel.}

Kennon Fontenot's mom, Shelley Fontenot, provided me these "misc" photos today from Williamsport and Lamade Stadium.

I've always thought of Shelly Fontenot as kind and considerate, but the photos I am having to endure that illustrate all the fun they are having borders on cruel and unusual punishment! Because of her son, Kennon, I'm hooked on Little League and would much rather be in Williamsport.

Reminder, South Lake Charles plays Tampa, Florida in the US Semi Finals tonight.

The picture below really strikes me!

While I'm entertaining Trooper, the Ryder's lovebird and their two cats, taking litter box duty, taping the games, and clipping the newspaper articles about Kennon, these two are having the time of their life.

I've already called this foul play. Is there an umpire that will listen to my case.

Of course, Robert and Stephanie would argue that I'm drinking their beer, watching their TV, and eating their left overs. With that being their only "points", I'd put that debate down as a win for me by the mercy rule!

If I don't get one of those blue Southwest shirts, I'm gonna be some upset!

Lake Charles Kennon Fontenot's pitching called "mesmerizing"

A proud Robert Ryder called me this morning to tell me about this morning's article in the Williamsport Sun Gazette.

Fortunately, the Sun Gazette publishes on line so it was easy to find this article on Lake Charles Pitcher Kennon Fontenot.

While the focus of the article is on "the buzz" about Kennon's pitching, the writer does an excellent job detailing Kennon's total talent.

Robert's favorite part of the article was the last line which was a comment made by Lake Charles Coach Charlie Phillips.... ""Kennon is pretty special to us," Phillips said. "We just love Kennon for being Kennon."

South Lake Charles Little League competes tonight against a team from Florida in the US Semi Finals. The winner advances to the US Finals on Saturday with that winner playing in the final game to determine the World Series on Sunday. Here's hoping I get to write at least two three more blogs about Team Lake Charles! And, to gain an insight into the family that supports theis outstanding young man, read an e-mail interview with Kennon Fontenot's parents. Go South Lake Charles!

South Lake Charles Little League advances to World Series US Semi Finals

South Lake Charles (representing Louisiana and the Southwest Region) dominant play in their first 2 games in pool play was such that they advance to the US Semi Finals in first place position despite a 6-4 loss to Hagerstown, representing the Mid-Atlantic Region. The game was televised last night on ESPN.

What's next for the SLC team? First all, I hope they relish the moment and consider what they have done to change Lake Charles Little Leage Baseball history.

Over the years, Louisiana has sent 6 great teams to the Little League World Series. Four of those have been from South Lake Charles. To my knowledge, only Lafayette has ever advanced out of pool play. Getting to the semi-finals had eluded South Lake Charles.

Thanks to a terrific effort by the SLC Little Leaguers, this is no longer true! And, not only do they advance, but they advance as the first place team from Pool A.

On Thursday night, SLC plays the second place team from pool B, Citrus Park Little Leage from Tampa Florida. The game will be televised on ESPN at 7:00 central time.

On a sidebar note, congratulations to the team from Hagarstown for their victory and their sportsmanship. Like South Lake Charles, they are a tribute to the spirit of Little League. Hagarstown can take pride in their entire team.

Go South Lake Charles!

Robert Ryder is a huge fan of South Lake Charles Little League. So much so that he felt inspired to paint his bald head with "SW" and "15" (Kennon Fontenot's number).

South Lake Charles wins game one in Little League World Series

When coach Charlie Phillips speaks, I listen! When the South Lake Charles Little League coach said in an interview that he felt that the Washington team SLC faced in the first game was one of the strongest teams in the World Series, it got my attention.

The game, televised on ESPN last night, started out as a pitcher's dual. SLC came to play and play they did. The kept their focus against a very strong Washington pitcher.

Kennon Fontentot's pitching? The Washington coach called Kennon a "fantastic pitcher" and said that "If there's somebody that throws harder, I'd like to see it."

Bryce Jordan, twin Beau Jordan, Peyton McLemore, Hunter Self and Kennon Fontentot all contributed at bat to a final score of 5-1.

LittleLeague.org offers the box scores, game story, and an interview which, for me, was difficult to hear.

The quest continues today. South Lake Charles, representing the Southwest Regionplays Jeffersonville, Indiana (Great Lakes Region) at 2:30 central time. Like all of the games, this match up will be televised on ESPN.

South Lake Charles are the Louisiana State Little League Champions and represent the Southwest Region at the World Series.

An e-mail interview with Kennon Fontenot's Parents

I "interviewed" Shelley and Nick Fontenot via e-mail this week to offer a parent's perspective on Little League and the World Series. Like the engineer she is, Shelley's answers are in blue and Nick's are in orange.

What are your official titles at work?

Assistant Engineer with the City of Lake Charles

ACTT (Anti-Crime Tactics & Training) Team Sergeant with the Calcasieu Parish Sherriff's Office (CPSO) and instructor at the training academy

What were the most exciting moments leading up the Williamsport?

Winning the championship game in Waco!

Winning the state championship in Shreveport. Everyone could feel the pressure between city rivals
(Lafayette and Lake Charles).

When did it sink in that y’all were heading to the big game?

The second the ball got by the catcher in Waco.

It makes me dizzy wondering how you wear so many hats! What’s your secret?

God and family. When I think back on past experiences through my life and think “ Wow, I’m glad I finished this” or ”I accomplished this task” or even “I plan on doing something in the future”, I take a step back and remember that I really haven’t done all of these things, at least not by myself. God has given me strength to see things through and my family is always right by my side. I have a great family, they are very supportive.

I have to agree with Shell, it gets pretty hectic, so you have to depend on each other and talk to God.

Who gets the most jitters during a game. Nick? Shelley? Kristine?

I would have to say Nick does. Although it is a feeling felt by all of us, Nick definitely feels it the most.

Shell is right. The jitters come from knowing baseball is a game of failure. Telling these kids four hits out of ten is a success is sometimes difficult.

I don’t want to cause a parental dispute, but where does Kennon get his athletic abilities from?

Nick played baseball and basketball when he was in school. In fact, I think his senior year St. Louis won a state title in basketball.

Kennon has been blessed with some athletic ability, but him understanding the game is his greatest strength.

As you know, South Lake Charles has made this trip several times in the past, but never gotten beyond pool play. How do you feel SLC is going to do?

Well, I am hoping for the best. I reminded Kennon before he left for PA that his Daddy and I are proud of him and to enjoy the LLWS experience. Also to be thankful and appreciative of all of the hard work each and every player has put into these games, practices and tournaments to get here. Regardless of the outcome up here, they have fought hard and never given up. They deserve it, they need to have fun and enjoy it.

And just to give you a perspective of where my son comes from, after I gave him my parental speech, he turned to me and said, “Momma, we are not going to Williamsport just to play, we’re going to win.”

I hope they can get to the next rounds, but it has been a total success.

How is Kennon enjoying Williamsport?

He loves it. He is really enjoying meeting all of the kids from around the country and world.

He is loving it. I told him to try and take everything in and enjoy it.

What other sports does Kennon play?

Football and basketball.

I got such a charge out of Kennon’s sister running up to him in Waco saying, “You won, Kennon, you won!” Is he as great a big brother as he appears to be?

He has a kind heart and sweet disposition. However, Kennon & Kristine are only 22 months apart they have their fair share of brotherly sisterly quarrels.

He takes care of his sisters, but Kennon and Kristine argue and fight all the time, but every now and then you can hear them talking about their lives.

If you’d like, tell us about your middle child? I understand she’s a pretty good athlete!

Kristine plays tournament softball. Kristine and Kennon compete during the season for the most homeruns. Nick and I have to separate on the weekends and travel with the 2 older kids, so there is a lot of texting and cell phone conversations regarding who did what at the plate or on defense between the two kids.

DeDe is a heck of a hitter.

So, that ends my interview. Of course, now I've got even more questions so will have to see if a follow up interview is possible. Hmmm...maybe Shelley's mom, Stephanie, and husband Robert Ryder would consent to a phone interview?

Regardless, is it any wonder that I'm a fan of the Fontenot family? Havng known Shelley since she was a teenager, it makes me so very, very proud to showcase her family here.

With less than 7 hours to go until the game, I realize that I'm more of Nick's nature insofar as nerves. From this morning's newspaper account, South Lake Charles is competing against an impressive team. One thing I know is that SLC knows how to fight back. I saw it in Waco first hand, and Coach Phillips referred to this ability in comments in today's American Press.

Good luck to the entire team, and "thanks Fontentots" for taking the time to answer my questions. Sure wish you could take me out to the ball game!

Kool Kats Night Out II

In less than a week, the Hobo Hotel for Cats will host their second annual auction.

Consider the reasons why this year's event will trump their first endeavor which was quite successful.

1. The auctioneer. Ben Mount! This is gonna be great. Ben loves cats. He loves the Hobo Hotel. He is a great auctioneer!

Tiffany, a very nice representative from L'auberge, returned my call today and has promised to e-mail details as to block room rates and more by Monday.

A few of the things Tiffany told me today:

The most attractive rates are the last 2 weeks in August with early June and July the most expensive
Internet access is $195 per connection so that means we are limited to either very wealthy bloggers, or not offer hand-on except for those with air-cards. Another alternative is to host the educational sessions off site.
We can use our own AV equipment (I have one projector and 2 screens)
On Thurs, Friday, Saturday there is usually a band playing in Jack Daniels bar and grill.

She gave me permission to post the information she is going to e-mail so I'll do that upon receipt.

Below, I've inserted the initial proposal based on the dates that are in less demand at L'auberge. These are dates for discussion purposes only, but do reflect a lesser rate as this time period in August equates to a lesser room rate. In a separate PDF, the sale rep sent fees for AV equipment, meals, etc. and I'm to check with another facility relative to their options.

These rates only apply until Aug. 31st and I'm not sure why she did not include a Saturday night allthough I suspect the room rate may be more on a Saturday.

Is there any interest in offering registration/sessions on Thursday afternoon or should we have registration and sessions on Friday and 1/2 day on Saturday.

Based on the above room requirements, we are pleased to offer the following group rate. If the room block decreases, the rate is subject to change.

The above rates represent our group rates and are subject to a 13% sales and innkeepers tax. If your organization is tax exempt, a valid certificate must be on file with the hotel prior to the group's arrival. In order for rates to be tax exempt, payment must be made by either a government check or by a government issued purchase order.

The Group guestroom rates quoted by the Hotel shall be on a net, non-commissionable basis.

Check-In/Check-Out

The Hotel's check-in time is 4:00 P.M. and the check-out time is 11:00 A.M. Early check-in is based on a "space available" basis and is not guaranteed. Individuals staying in their rooms beyond check-out time will be billed one (1) additional night's stay. Late check-out is provided based on availability, although some charges may apply. If guests do not check into their rooms by 10:00 P.M. on the date of arrival, the rooms will be considered canceled.

Cut-Off Date

The Group cut-off date is July 30, 2009. Rooms not reserved by this date will be released back to the reservations department for general sale on a first-come, first-served basis, and at prevailing rates. For repeat groups, we will monitor the group’s actual guest room usage based on history from your prior group.

The Hotel reserves the right to make any room block adjustments based on the actual pick-up of guest rooms.

Complimentary Rooms

Group will receive one (1) complimentary guestroom night for every fifty (50) occupied, revenue-producing guestrooms on a cumulative basis (total room nights utilized divided by [50]. Unused complimentary guestrooms will have no monetary value. Group may choose to receive one (1) complimentary suite room night for every four complimentary guestroom nights earned.

Function/Meeting Space

Below is a listing of all space that has been requested by the Group. The Hotel reserves the right to assign and change all function/meeting space to best accommodate the size and needs of each function. The Group must obtain final approval from the Hotel before publishing room names.

Food and Beverage

A minimum of $3,500.00 in banquet food and beverage is required for the above requested space by the Group. The guaranteed amount does not include room rental, audio-visual or electrical requests, taxes, service charges, labor fees or other miscellaneous charges.

Audio-Visual

On-site audio-visual rental and services are available through L’Auberge du Lac. Adequate advance notice is required to fulfill special requests. Please contact the Convention Services Manager for arrangements.

Golf

All arrangements will be coordinated through the sales office for special group rates.

Group Monday-Thursday Golf rate: $79.00 per golfer. The price includes green fees, cart fee, and range balls. Minimum of 24 golfers required. Rates are subject to change based on group size.

Group/Tournament Administration Fee: There is a tournament fee of $10.00 per person. The tournament fee includes event scoreboards, cart name signs and event rule sheets.

Shipping and Packages

Handling of all luggage, golf bags or amenity delivery to sleeping rooms, golf clubhouse and/or meeting facilities will be charged a $3.00 per person fee per day of service. In the event the Group will be shipping packages to the Hotel, the Group must notify the Convention Services Manager at least one week in advance. Packages may be delivered to the Hotel no earlier than five (5) business days prior to the start of the event. Items that require a large amount of storage space may be subject to holding and storage fees. A handling fee of $3.00 per package will be added to the master account. The Hotel accepts no responsibility or liability for the delivery, security or condition of the packages.

Guest Parking

The Hotel is pleased to offer complimentary valet and self-parking throughout the event. Bus parking is also available.

Billing Arrangements

The group will be responsible for payment of all Food & Beverage and Audio Visual Charges, which will be posted to the Master account and paid by company check or credit card.

Each individual guest will be responsible for Room, Tax and Incidental charges. At check-in, the guest must leave a valid credit card or cash deposit of $100.00 per day with the Hotel. Each guest must also provide at check-in a valid picture ID either by a driver's license, state issued ID or passport.

The above meeting space and guestrooms are currently being held until 8/31/2008 12:00:00 AM then a signed contract will be required to confirm arrangements.

Potential "How To" Blogging Workshops for La/Tex gathering

The following is a proposed format and introductory list of "How to" Workshops for consideration. Please share your thoughts or ideas in comments. There are so many more topics. I simply wanted to get something posted as a "starter."

Ideally, agents will bring their air-card enabled laptops. Each workshop would offer an instructor to provide step-by-step instructions. Two or 3 knowledgable assistants (need volunteers) would provide help to those who get blogged bogged down. This is a very similar format as offered at the NAR technology workshops.

Topics for beginners could include:

How to create an Active Rain Blog
Optimizing your profile
Basic Editing (linking, inserting and aligning photos)
Utilizing popular photo enhancement programs
Social Networking (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc, etc, etc)

LA/Tex Gathering. Social? Educational? Social and Educational? Go Crazy!?

In contemplating the LA/Tex* gathering, it is probably a good idea for us to consider, "what is the objective of the get together?"

Based on the preliminary conversations between Judi Morgan, Derenda Grubb, and Lisa Heindel, my impression is that it will be a combination of social and educational.

Sensing that this group is going to be social no matter what, the question becomes, how in-depth do we want to go insofar as traning.

My personal preference is to "go crazy" with the training.

Crazy=work.

Judi Morgan has already got the ball rolling by contacting Brad Andersohn with Active Rain. For the cost of air fair and hotel, Brad is willing to come. We just need to secure acceptable dates.

With Brad as a draw, I think we have great potential to put together a meaningful one day or two session with multiple opportunities for networking and getting to know each other.

Given the talent and experinece we have within the ranks of La/TEx* The format can include panel discussions, success stories, "how to" sessions on all sorts of topics.

I'll start a separate blog for topic ideas.

Once we are agreed on the objective and format, I suggest we do as Lisa Heindel has suggested and post all of this in multiple groups.

Your thoughts? Who wants to go crazy? Derenda, DO NOT say anything about my already being crazy!

Lake Charles player Kennon Fontentot makes "Top 10 to Watch" list

This article on SunGazette.com offers a profile of "Top 10 U.S. Players to Watch" in this year's Little League World Series.

I'm so excited that my favorite baseball player, Kennon Fontenot of Lake Charles, made this prestigious list!

Kennon will either play shortstop or pitch this Saturday night at 8:00 Eastern, 7:00 Central time. Like all of the World Series games, it will be televised on ESPN.

The Lake Charles Little League team has already made us proud, having won the Southwest Regional championship in Waco last week.

These are photos taken by Kennon's mom during the Southwest Regionals.

Of course, the entire Fontentot family, including my friend, neighbor, former agent, and now sales representative for KPLC TV, Stephanie (and Robert) Ryder are all enjoying the Williamsport experience.

Meanwhile, I'm relegated to taking care of the Ryders 2 cats and Trooper, the lovebird! Foul play!

At least the Ryders have a far superior HD TV and they left a refrigerator well stocked with one of my favorite adult beverages.

Hopefully, I'll receive some photos soon showing the Fontenot and Ryder clan enjoying Williamsport.

A WOW to the Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau

I've become accustomed to great service at the Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau. So accustomed, as a matter of fact, that I've probably taken them for granted.

Of course, the CVB does a great job of their core service which is pretty significant. Here's a short list of what this group does:

serve leisure travelers media professionals, convention planners, sporting groups and those in the travel trade.
provide information on Southwest Louisiana regarding attractions, events, accommodations, dining and more. This includes a terrfic website.
provide royalty free photos, great pages for linking from real estate sites, and a beautiful builidng to start/stop area tours

Just last year, a group I fell in with called on me to call on the CVB for an 11th hour need. Rather than an attitude of "Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part", Executive Director Shelly Johnson and crew responded in their typical, cordial fashion. I was impressed and thankful.

Today, I sent an e-mail to Director Johnson. In minutes, a reply from her AND the director of sales offering to help for what promises to be a great TEX/LA gathering of bloggers in 2009.

Potential dates, maximizing "Brad time"

8/18/08 Note that the Title has been enhanced to utilize this post to discuss the best way to utilize Active Brad as well as determine dates.

820/08 Preliminary discussion re dates. Based on the dates L'auberge proposed, and the need to nail down dates in order for several other things to be scheduled, I'm going to suggest we concur with the general time frame Judi has suggested which is:

-Arrive on Thursday evening (informal registration over cocktails, dinner) or early Friday morning

-Blogging sessions all day Friday

-Possible blogging sessions Saturday a.m and other items ad mentioned in Judi's post, including a group social function late afternoon/early evening.

with the dates of Aug. 20 13 (Thursday), 21,14, 22,15 and 16th with blogging workshops on the 14th and 15th. and the morning of the 23rd. {edited to reflect conflict on the 20th and after dates.}

I'm not married to these dates, but do feel we need to make this decision soon.

South Lake Charles Little League now in Williamsport

The South Lake Charles Little League is now enjoying Williamsport, PA and will compete in their first game of the Little League World Series at 8:00 Eastern, 7:00 Central time, this Saturday, August 16th. Like other pool games, it will be televised on ESPN.

With many of the regional tournaments played this past weekend, the brackets are now complete and available at littleleague.org for the World Series games.

Lake Charles is in pool A, representing the Southwest Region, having won the regional title in Waco.

Their first opponent, representing the Northwest Region, will be Mills Creek Little League.

Go South Lake Charles!
