RE Barcamp 1 Year Anniversary

The folks at Active Rain have been big supporters of the RE Barcamp movement from day 1. What started out as an idea that we thought would bring together a few thought leaders in the RE.net has turned into a nationwide movement. Thanks to all of the AR staff and AR members who have ever been involved with an RE Barcamp. It wouldn't have had the success everyone enjoys without the hard work and generous support of AR.

There were a lot of other companies who also supported the effort with just as much support and enthusiasm. I dont want to offend anyone by forgetting them so I wont take a chance on making a list, but you know who you are and that you are appreciated!

To read more about my thoughts on RE Barcamp a year later, visit the MLBroadcast blog

Link Roundup - Stuff You Should Be Reading

Here's a round up of RE related links from around the web that you should be reading.

Mike's Corner (Hey it's my blog, it should be first on the list)

Bridging the Gap. Real Estate Blogging Basics

An irreverent Look At Real Estate Blogging

Featured Realtor® Blog - Loco Musings

After a full year, I find another worthy Realtor® Blog To Feature

GeekEstate Blog

Free Data Sources For Your Web Site

An excellent round up of great resources for your blog or site.

Agent Genius

Agents, Legends In Their Own Minds...

I'll have more to say on this issue in an upcoming "Gap" post on Mike's Corner. You won't want to miss it.

Future of Real Estate Marketing

MRIS Takes on Search Sites

I think HAR.com just got leapfrogged in the world of public facing MLS sites.

Redfin Corporate Blog

Promoting Your Home For Sale on Twitter

A Redfin seller gets her geek on. Check out the link to Guy Kawasaki's guide to Twitter while you're there. Nobody gets more out of Twitter than Guy. Just ask him. No need - I did it for you, listen here.

Late Addition
Matthew Ferrera

Why IDX Is A Really Bad Idea

The idea of broker reciprocity is a good idea on the surface, and I am not promoting that you abandon your efforts to market the entire database of your listings, however, Matthew makes some really great points in this post. I have always been amazed that agents do not see the importance of creating a quality, public facing presentation in the MLS for their listings. They still seem to be written in agent to agent RealtorSpeak and let's face it, the vast majority of them are crap. Crap photos, terrible copy and overall just really sloppy efforts. It's food for thought that you wouldn't want to pollute your professional marketing materials with someone elses lack of effort. What do you think the solution should be? What alternatives are there? Do you abandon a display of IDX entirely or do you think you should be able to sanitize the listings for your prospects' protection. It's an interesting dilemma.

That's it for now. I'm kinda of trying to get my bearings on what to post here at my AR digs. I'd love it if you could tell me what you would like to hear about in the world of Real Estate marketing, technology and new business models. Lemme Know

It Rained On REBarcamp Houston and It Was Awesome

Without the support of Active Rain, Rich, Brad and the avid AR members that were in attendance, REBarcamp Houston wouldn't have been nearly as successful. I owe a debt of gratitude to this great group of people.

This event has sparked a renewed interest in my involvement with AR primarily because of the passion of the team in place at AR and their sincere desire to provide tools that work and the education to put them in motion. The best attended sessions of the day were conducted by Rich and Brad. They were extremely dynamic and the attendees walked away with valuable knowledge and insight.

We will be posting a full wrap up story at the official REBarcamp Houston site as soon as I catch my breath. The AR posts, photos and multimedia are plentiful and very fun to view.

Thanks to the sponsors, friends, volunteers and my family for making this so enjoyable and successful.

See Ya Again Soon!

Brooks Lake Livingston Waterfront Specialist:

I had a ball at Real Estate barcamp Houston yesterday!

Some functions are fun and some are not! This was just wonderful! I didn't completely understand what to expect with a "Free form forum" but I will say it was great. The presentations were fun and informative.

I was able to meet so many Rainers that I felt I was home.

Is that strange? After getting to know so many people through comments, following their lives and seeing their pictures each day I felt like it was a homecoming!

Adding hugs, face to face conversation, and sharing space with others just strengthened the bond I feel for these people! And, I got to meet so many for the first time that I will be including in my sphere that I had been missing.

The sessions covered everything from upcoming technology to how to utilize today's technology! The keynote speaker, Paul Chaney is as inspiration in person as his blogs portray.

They will be here to share their blogging and social media chops too. Those are just the sponsors sending people to the event. Check out the web site to see how generous people from all over the country have become involved. Click through to their sites, check out their wares and thank them for helping us put together what promises to be one awesome event.

I need a small favor from those that have RSVP'd already. I need you to do it again, (WE NEED ALL SPONSORS TO RSVP AS WELL) we have a new form that drops into a spreadsheet. Paul was recently tapped to become the new president of IBNMA, a trade association for bloggers and those involved with new media, social media and more. I've known Paul for over 2 years now and when I heard he was going to take the reigns of IBNMA, I didn't hesitate to add MLBroadcast as a new member. I know with his involvement, the organization will become one of the more useful tools in our social media strategy.

Paul took some time to speak with me recently about IBNMA's charter and vision. After listening to the podcast I think you'll become compelled to become a member as well. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did conducting the interview.

REBarcamp Houston Is Moving Forward

We're so proud and happy to have Rich and Brad involved with REBarcamp Houston. This post started out as a response to Rich's AR post, it grew a little too long for a comment. There were some great comments and good questions so I thought I would take the opportunity to expand a bit more on the concept of a BarCamp. It's a grass roots effort and the content is actually created and delivered by those in attendance. We start out in the morning by allowing attendees to pick the topics. You may choose to lead a topic, or you might pick one that you want to know more about. We split off into sessions througout the day. BarCamps have been held all over the world for the past few years. Recently people have been applying the concept to specific verticals. The first Real Estate Bar Camp was held in San Francisco recently and it was an overwhelming success.

It's not just about technology. If you want to know more about emerging business models, recruiting, retention, or anything, you have the opportunity to bring it up as a topic and learn from those in attendance that have knowledge on the subject. There are many people coming in from other areas of the country that are eager to share. It's a great opportunity for anyone in the real estate industry to get access to information that you will be able to take action on the minute you leave.

We should be making the location announcement for the event tomorrow.

What do we need to help make it a success? We need you to spread the word to the real estate professionals in the Houston area. We also need some more sponsors. In keeping with the grass roots rules of Barcamp, all sponsors at the same level of only $250. If you are interested in sponsoring, please email me at mprice@mlbroadcast.com or call me at 832 331 4846.

Again, thanks to Rich, Brad and Active Rain for getting behind REBarcamp Houston

PS: Houston Area Brokers, if you would like me or one of the local REBarcamp organizers to come by and speak to your agents about the event, let us know, we plan on hitting the road over the next few weeks to spread the word.

Submit Your Best Posts To The Carnival Of Real Estate

I've been a big supporter of the Carnival of Real Estate since it's inception over 2 years ago. If you're not familiar with the concept of a Blog Carnival, check out this link. I've followed the CoRE as a means of being exposed to the best real estate blogging content on the web. It's a huge time saver for me because I can almost always count on that week's host to cull the best of the best from the submissions made.

It's sort of a grass roots effort that changes from host to host, usually with a theme associated with it based on the time of year or the locale of the host. The CoRE also has a great audio podcast. (iTunes Link) It consists of interviews with the weekly CoRE host talking about their selection process and other timely issues in the RE.net.

I encourage all AR bloggers to subscribe to the CoRE blog and Podcast and take an active role in participating. Submit your best post every week and let the CoRE administrators know about your ideas for making it an even greater resource.

I wanted to take an opportunity to introduce everyone to a podcast channel we have created recently. Each week I will be interviewing people in the RE.net and tech world on wide variety of topics including, technology, marketing, new business models and more. My most recent interview is with Giovanni Galluchi of Viewzi.Com, a new platform for search.

From time to time I post these podcast interviews to Mike's Corner and other blogs I have the privilege to write for. You can subscribe to the entire feed in iTunes as well. I'd like to know from AR members who you would like to hear interviewed and what topics are of most interest to you.

I hope you enjoy the conversations and would love to hear your comments on content and topics for future episodes!

Simply put, it's a conference without an agenda until the morning of the event. It's an event created entirely by the attendees. Barcamps are among the most effective uses of conference time I have ever experienced. It's amazing how effective the "uncoference" concept is when it comes to the quality of the information shared. Recently a group of volunteers gathered together to put a Real Estate focus on Barcamps by holding the first ever REBarcamp in San Francisco. It was wildly successful and we're going to do it again, in the Bayou City (Houston) on Oct. 22nd. The best part? It's completely free!

Here's how it works. At the beginning of the day there is a white board or large sheet of butcher paper placed on a wall. The day is sectioned into hour long break out sessions with different room or area assignments. Attendees write down the title of the session they would like to either conduct or attend. Some folks seek out experts in certain areas to moderate their discussions, some decide to moderate their own. All attendees then review the sessions and determine which tracks will be right for them. We plan ot make sure there is something for everyone encouraging basic, intermediae and advanced sessions. So if you don't know what a blog is, don't worry. If you're a long time blogger, there will be something there for you as well.

There is usually a lunch break with a box lunch or catered food provided by the sponsors of the event. There are typically some pretty cool conference swag including a special edition t-shirt for the event, all provided free of charge. Below are the sessions that were finalized at REBarcamp SF - Keep in mind that if you do not see a session here you would be interested in, it doesn't matter, you can create the session you want to particpate in on the day of the event. Pretty cool eh?

time Back Room Front Room 1 Front Room 2 Front Room 3
11 AM BlogSurvey SocialNetworks ForeClosure2 ThreeOutcomes
Noon AltosResearch VideoBasics101 PayForPerformance TrainingCoaching
Noon RetsReso Syndication MyTechBase
1 PM Lunch
2 PM BlogNetworks ProBonoReal Estate? PodCasting
2 PM ForeClosures Beginning Blog Twitter Biz Case
2 PM Web 2 Marketing
3 PM Vicious Gossip Flickr More GuerillaMarketing
4 PM MortgageIndustry SearchDashboard CommentManagement

We're working on a very cool facility that will allow us to have a wide varity of sessions taking place at the same time. If you're a real estate tech vendor, we encourage demos. If you're an exhibitor or sponsor at the HAR show, why not take advantage of REBarcamp to make additional contact with prospects ahead of the event?

The Houston REBarcamp will be held on Oct. 22nd. (the Day before the HAR Realtor Expo). We have some awesome people coming in from around the country, so don't miss it. Visit the site today and add yourself on the event page at Facebook!

Harness The Power of Community To Gain More Prospects

I was prompted by a blog post that Brian Boero published recently to share some of my thoughts on how to harness the power of your community and neighborhood knowledge. Here's a link to the post, I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas on community too.
