This is not Good Bye but rather a short note letting you all know that I will be sunsetting this site.

As some of you know I have two profiles on AR and since I can not merge them into one without affecting all of you, letting this one rest is the best solution.

When I joined AR back in November of 2006 I joined as a real estate agent and then as a real estate trainer. Keeping both of my profiles active is just way to time consuming and frustrating.

I had been hoping I could simply merge them into one blog. Then I found out that merging them would have resulted in a major loss of points not only for me but for everyone who had commented on this site.

So while I may occasionally post here just to keep it going a bit I will be doing all my regular posting on my other AR profile.

I wanted to let you know as I feel those of you that have subscribed to this blog may be wondering why I haven't posted much.

Kayaking Linekin Bay Maine

A perfect July day for kayaking Linekin Bay in East Boothbay Maine.

While on a 4th of July camping trip to Boothbay Harbor Maine, we decided to do some kayaking.

Jay and I set out at about 10:30 in the morning with a goal of reaching Ocean Point and then paddling back to our put in at the Murray Hill boat launch in East Boothbay.

High tide was at 1:31 pm and we knew we'd be able to get in a few hours of easy paddling.

Neither one of us had dipped our paddle in water since last summer! I think we're classic fair weather paddlers.

Odiorne Point a slice of NH Seacoast

My husband Jay and I are both beach lovers and we love to spend our free time exploring the coast of New Hampshire as well as points north along the majestic Maine coast.

One of our favorite local parks is Odiorne Point State Park in Rye NH. Rye is a quick 35 minute ride from our home in Hampstead and Odiorne is a 330 acre park that is open daily year-round.

We've been lucky enough to able to visit Odiorne State park during all four of our New England seasons...including the winter months. Sometimes we simply bring a bagged lunch and sit by the ocean...other times we've brought in some wine...

Kingston New Hampshire's Hidden Talent

I just love discovering local talent and posting about it.

We all live in communities that are special to us or at least they should be special if you call them your home. Sometimes it takes going out and exploring your community to discover what makes it special or maybe getting involved in town events. If you look you'll find it!

Kingston NH, while not my home town is a town I like very much. I've written about Kingston and I also did a virtual tour of Kingston last fall that you can see by clicking on the take the tour tab.

Kingston is a lovely small NH town rich in history and rich in people...after all it is not the towns themselves that make a community a special place, but the people that make a community special.

Hampton Beach New Hampshire * 7th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest*

I had meetings most of the day today but found a small window of opportunity that won't be available again until late Saturday.

So I took it and headed to the Beach.

I'd been itching to go all week because 300 tons of imported sand was dropped on Hampton Beach last Friday all in preparation for Hampton Beach's 7th Annual Sand Sculpture Competition.

This is something you just have to see as pictures simply do not do it justice. At least mine do not!

There are 12 Masters of the Sand Sculpture Universe competing for over $10,000.00 in prize money.

When I arrived today only a few had started working on their sculptures but what I saw was incredible.

On Saturday the 23rd the winner will be announced followed by an awards ceremony and fireworks. This is a big event at Hampton Beach but if you can't make it don't despair as the sculptures will be on display until the 28th.

It is very inspiring to watch it live so I highly recommend taking a trip to the beach to watch people create masterpieces out of simple sand and water. One thing I didn't know was that this is a timed event and each competitor has a total of 21 hours over a 3 day period to create their masterpiece. Wow!

The beach has lighted night viewing so if you can't make it till after work you can still take in the sights.

The event is co- sponsored by Greg Grady and the "The Grady Bunch" built the mammoth Sand Demo Site that the competition is being held on.

Be sure to cast your vote for the coveted Peoples Choice Award on Saturday. It will be a hard decision for me to make and I haven't even seen them all yet!

This is just a small sample of what is being created at Hampton Beach this weekend. See you Saturday!!!

Sandown New Hampshire Hosts an Electronics Recycle Day

Got a dead computer?? Or maybe you have a few of them kicking around your attic?

They are not an easy item to get rid of just like all those old broken down T'V' s we've been collecting for years.

What do you do with them?

Can't set them out on the curb for the sanitation collectors to pick up and most of the time the local dumps won't accept them.

I think I have 2 old computers in my attic and more than a few monitors hanging around.

The town of Sandown New Hampshire is hosting a desperately needed Electronic Recycle Day and nicer still is that they've opened it up to residents of the following towns Sandown, Chester, Hampstead, Danville, Atkinson, Fremont, and Plaistow.

It will be held ONE DAY ONLY Saturday, June 23, 2007 from 9am-1pm

Hampstead New Hampshire is gearing up for a fun filled summer

Starting with the Summer Music series which has it's kick off event Tuesday June 19th at 7:00 pm.

This event is free for all and offers an added bonus as classic car and motorcycle owners are encouraged to bring their cars and bikes.

While this is an "Oldies" event, the band playing on the 19th is called the Reminisants and they are sure to appeal to all ages. They have been around since 1973 and have quite a performance history.

The concert will be held adjacent to the Town Meeting House on the corner of Emerson Ave and Main Street. This is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine.

I plan on attending with my camera in hand. Bring your lawn chair and blankets just in case it gets cold and don't forget your rain gear.

Another fun event for the whole family is The Old Fashioned Strawberry festival being held on Saturday June 23rd from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Hampstead Congregational Church on Main Street...they'll be all sorts of crafts, games, yummy baked goods plus lots of fresh strawberry shortcakes. I can't wait!!!

The Community Resources Association will be hosting a Free Summer Movie series which will also be held at the Meetinghouse Park. Starting June 20, July 18 and Aug 22 all held on the Town Green. Shows start at dusk and don't forget to bring your chair and everything you need to get comfy as the movie as well as the concerts are all held under the stars. How Humiliating...I was stood up today!

I can't remember when the last time I was stood up...maybe I haven't ever been stood up before..I don't know because I can't remember it. But today I was and I didn't like it one bit.

I had booked 4 condos to show a customer. We were to meet the listing agent at the first showing and then go on our own to see the rest.

This was to be our third time out and we had talked buyer agency representation but had not yet entered into that relationship. We had good rapport and I thought she felt comfortable with me.

Was I wrong? How could I have missed the boat on this?

I called her yesterday (Monday) as I had told her I would, during a layover from my flight home from St. Louis and left a detailed message about where to meet. I gave her all my contact information just in case...she was running late or needed to change the time.

I showed up 10 minutes early and the listing agent was already there. We made small talk as we waited and waited. Finally I called my customer on her cell phone, got voice mail and told her we were waiting and repeated the unit #...just in case I forgot to tell her which unit. Of course I had told her which unit but I was trying to save face...hers.

10 minutes later the co-broker has to leave. I'm mortified! He is looking at me with pity! No customer in sight. He must have thought what a fool! I was dumbstruck and didn't know what to do!

I drove to appointment # 2 and called her again, telling her that I would be waiting at that unit and while we no longer could get into the other one, we could still see the rest. I asked her to please call me on my cell and repeated the number to her. I was polite and concerned that maybe something happened to her.

I also called her house and was told by a teenager that she just left. Was she going to go see houses I ask? He told me he had no idea where she was going. So I decide to wait a little longer. After all I have nothing better to do than sit in my car waiting!

Feeling totally stupid I finally left. I've wasted a couple of hours of my time, gas, a co-brokers time, his gas and 4 sellers who prepared for showings that never happened.

Embarrassed, I called Jay and told him I had been stood up, he couldn't believe it! I was prepared for his lecture...he never gave it.

I have to ask...Where are manners today? Don't they matter anymore? How can someone book an appointment and simply not care enough to cancel it...to just let other people sit and wait. I don't get it.

My mother taught me to respect other people and it amazes me that something so simple...so easy can be so over looked...respect for other people! Didn't I deserve that much? Didn't those sellers?

RESPECT...is it really that hard? It's 10:30 pm and I still have not had the courtesy of a call back.

I'll call her again tomorrow morning but I really don't know what to say I'm simply so disappointed.

Update...I called and left a message this morning stating that I sure hoped everything was okay and asked that she call me to let me know...even if she found a house already with someone else. Just to please let me know. No call back as of yet. 6-13-07 7:39 pm

Update...June 16th, I don't bite...really I don't. All I ask is that my time is respected. I don't want to waste anyones time and would never push myself on anyone.

Beaching it in New Hampshire

I love the beach especially on those cloudy, rainy days when most people stay home curled up on the couch. Yesterday was Jay's birthday and as is our custom the birthday person gets to decide what they want to do. He couldn't decide, although I'd bet if the weather had been better he might have chosen golfing, so I decided for him.

NH has a small ocean coastline with only 18 miles of rocky and sandy very changeable coastline. It's an easy ride with much of the coast visible from the car.

From our home in Hampstead it is a quick 35 minute ride to Hampton beach. We left around 1pm and thought we'd go pick up some lunch at Ceal's in Seabrook Beach and then drive up the coast.

Ceal's Clam Stand is nothing to look at but it is famous for it's homemade seafood chowder. When I say that your spoon literately can stand up in the bowl unassisted...I am dead serious.

Last time we drove up for seafood chowder at Ceal's, they sold out just before we arrived so we both were a bit anxious that we might not get our "Ceal's fix".

We arrived at Ceal's only to find out that they had only one bowl left but if we came back in an hour the new batch of home made chowder would be ready. It was a no brainer...we told them we'd be back!

We headed north on Route 1 A and as we crossed the bridge over Hampton Harbor I looked down with envy at the Campers camping out on the beach at Hampton Beach State Park. I was jealous that my motor home was home in my driveway and not sitting in that park.

Even though it was foggy I'd have gladly been there.

We continued north up the coast towards North Hampton. It was lovely and very unusual as there were hardly any people in sight.

Did I mention it was cold and rainy...hardy anyone on the beach! I love it like that!

We drove through North Hampton stopping to explore and take pictures. This is our backyard and we know it well but still every time we see it...we fall in love again.

We talk as we drive and hold hands ( I know how corny) but that's us. We dream about places yet to be seen, things we still want to do. But most importantly we realize how lucky we are to live where do and that we get to see at anytime we want, the beauty of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

We love our little part of the world...New Hampshire really does have it all.

After a while we turned around a drove south back to Ceal's for our chowder. I love the view as we round the bend in North Hampton...from the car the coast is breathtaking. My photo is taken from inside a moving car on a raining foggy day and still I think you can see a bit of what I see when I look at it.

Welcome to New Hampshire! Isn't it special?

Even when the weather is bad the Coastline is beautiful. Can you imagine what it would look like on a sunny day?

This was a difficult transaction that after many delays was finally given the clear to close. Because of the delays we had no say in the time or location of the closing. So it was scheduled at an attorneys office and was being fit into his tight schedule to accommodate us. This office was huge, brand new with big shiny furniture and impressive law books lining the walls.

When I arrived with my customers we were put in a big conference room. I took a seat near one end of the huge table and put my pocket book and brief case on the floor.

We made small talk while waiting for the sellers to arrive. It was a beautiful sunny day in New Hampshire and the sun streamed through the huge windows of the conference room bathing everything in a warm glow. It was so comfortable and relaxing that I could have fallen asleep.

When the sellers and listing agent arrived, about 10 minutes late, they joined us in the conference room.

I placed my file on the table and the other agent did the same with hers.

We all sat across the table from each other making awkward small talk while awaiting the arrival of the closing attorney. He was running late we were told...finally he arrived a bit harried and pressed for time.

Of course, it was our fault, he was now very behind schedule...all the delays and then this last minute scheduling. While I was grateful I was annoyed by his cavalier attitude.

I ignored the minor attitude and he started the closing. Soon after I noticed a funny smell. Not sure what it was I kept my mouth shut, a bit unusual for me for sure.

No one else seemed to notice but the smell seemed to get stronger as the attorney moved his huge pile of closing Documents around. Good grief it smelled bad I thought to myself but no one else acted like they smelled anything at all.

I know everyone was nervous but did nerves affect the sense of smell? I didn't think so. It started to get real bad...I had to say something.

"Whats that smell?" I blurted out.

"New office smell?" The Co-broke suggested.

"Hmmm" the attorney mumbled as he looked up above his glasses at me. As if I was a nut case.

"Gross"... the buyer said.

Mr. Seller stood up and said "something is burning." With that said we all got up, stood and looked at each other not knowing what to do. But we could all smell something. Finally, I walked over to the book shelves and did a sniff test and the attorney went to get a staff member to help. Now he was really running late and very irritated.

Maybe something died somewhere in here? But it really smelled like something was burning. We were all milling about the room, so nice and new and shiny and expensive...smelling fire but seeing nothing. No smoke...nothing but the smell. As we picked up our stuff, gathered our paperwork and files...the smell started to overwhelm us...it was so strong.

The decision was made to evacuate the building as the smell was just horrible. No matter where we went I could smell it. We went out the front waiting area...the smell was there too! Now we're all starting to panic.

Everyone was told to leave the building and we all proceeded to walk out the door clutching our important files.

While waiting the arrival of the fire department, we stood and talked about trying to do the closing outside.

Suddenly the wind shifted and we could smell that burning smell outside with us!!!! We walked around in circles the 7 of us trying to figure where the fire was and how come it came outside with us. The attorney was clearly upset.

For some reason the smell was worse near me...a real strong burning smell. Everyone started to look at me and then my buyer shouted "Monika your pocket book is smoking!!" I thought she was kidding...the attorney looked at me over his glasses again...oh that look! The Co-broker screamed "your bag is on fire"... I dropped my nice new leather bag that I was clutching under my arm to the ground...it opened and I could see it was smoldering inside!!!All my papers where burned to a crisp, my make-up fried! OMG!!!

Talk about uncomfortable closings...I could not look anyone in eye after that. So far I've never had another closing with that attorney!

My pocket book pretty much ruined in the inside...my pride totally destroyed.

localism works...I know

I thought what a great idea to highlight some of my favorite localism type posts. Localism does work...I really do know that it works.

My recent very local post about Hate was widely read by local people and it had the most public comments of any of my posts, ever. It was picked up by the The Union Leader a New Hampshire newspaper and that created recognition beyond anything I ever expected. Yesterday they did a follow up interview to be published tomorrow.

Active Rainers meet in New Hampshire

It's been a strange week for me in Hampstead New Hampshire.

On Wednesday our town buried a fallen solider and I witnessed "hate" first hand. Between the Virginia tragedy, our local tragedy and all the flooding we've had, this week has been pretty sad.

Sad except for yesterday. I spent the day at a New Hampshire Association of REALTORS mediation training. Even if I wasn't a mediator I would have taken this class as the negotiation skills that you learn in mediation also apply to real estate. The program was taught by Sheila Maloney, who is the Assistant Director for negotiation and mediation at Northwestern University School of Law, she was excellent. She kept us engaged all day long....and I for one could have stayed longer, she was that good!

But the icing on cake was that there were four Active Rain members attending the program and guess who had her camera ready...me :)

My Grandson Wants to Blog

I'm babysitting my 11 year old grandson tonight. Out of the blue he asks me to help him set up a Blog? He wants his own Blog!

He is only 11 and I really didn't know what to say.

I asked him if he knows what a Blog is. He said yes of course he did and asked didn't I know all about Blogs???

Have you been reading my Blogs I asked? Yes, I have, he told me. He particularly enjoyed the ski blog since it had his photo in it!

So here he is wanting to Blog... I'm not sure how to let him have the feel for a Blog while keeping him off the web. I suggested he write something and I'll post it on my blog...after all I'm always looking for guest bloggers. No thank you he said, he really wants his own blog.

He has had his own laptop for about a year now and truth be told he probably knows more about technology than I do. For Easter he got a real Microscope and uses it all the time.

So maybe one of these days Michael will write something on my blog or maybe on Jay's blog. Or maybe he'll start up some kids blog somewhere...I'd really not be surprised!

Anyone planning on attending NAR's Mid Year meeting in DC next month? It would be awesome to meet some fellow Rainers at the conference.

Jay and I are planning on arriving May 12th... sometime that night and will be staying the whole week. I have some obligations on Monday and Thursday and other than beating around the trade show, visiting with some friends we have some free time. It would cool to put together a meeting!!! We could meet at the trade show or somewhere else. What say you???
