We have had a lot of stormy weather the past few days. When the ground gets as saturated as it is, and thunder storms pop up, it is not unusual to see flash flood warnings being posted. We have had several over the past few days. Yesterday, while on Hwy 96 and approaching the $18 M dollar bridge on the Natchez Trace, I captured these storm clouds rolling over the hills just west of Franklin, TN.

Recently, I saw Michael Moore sit on Jay Leno's couch and declare that "Capitalism is evil." I must admit I found this statement pretty shocking.

There is the obvious hypocrisy of the charge, because Michael Moore doesn't make movies for free---nor does he live in poverty like Mother Theresa. But the hyprocrisy doesn't much bother me. I've come to expect Michael Moore and those like him on the left and right to make statements that don't quite synch-up with reality. For example, Al Gore lectures us on our carbon footprint but doesn't hold himself up as an example of a small carbon footprint. It's not like the lefties own hypocrisy. Ted Haggard, the homosexual pastor, and Jimmy Swaggart, the philandering televangelist, come to mind immediately.

Furthermore, I disagree with Michael Moore's assertion, because as I was taught and as my life experience seems to indicate: capitalism is freedom. Capitalism grants individuals the power to buy what they want. Capitalism breaks the caste system because anyone can open any business, pursue any vocation or do anything that they think serves their needs. The market seems to punish those who don't serve the needs of the public, while it rewards (often richly) those who solve problems, invent solutions and provide needed services. To me capitalism seems to be the American promise.

But, I'm willing to admit that those observations are just my personal opinions and I'm really not outraged because I disagree with Michael Moore.

I'm outraged because he charges that capitalism is "evil". He could have made a number of charges which I may or may not have disagreed with. He could have called capitalism inefficient; unfair; stupid; a rat-race or whatever else he wanted to say about the system that gave America the highest standard of living in the world. But by choosing the word "evil" he has marked out a line that ends discussion.

As I understand evil, you can't negotiate with evil. You can't live with evil. Evil must be destroyed because evil is a cancer that will consume and destroy everything it touches.

When Michael Moore calls me "evil" (as Howard Dean has done the past) then he has declared war on me and those who think like me. When Jay Leno questioned why Michael Moore described me and every other small businessman in America as evil Michael Moore backed off a little. Mr. Moore claims that capitalism is only evil when people acquire great wealth. This doesn't soften the blow for me.

The reason I work seven days a week is because I'm trying to acquire great wealth.

I don't buy into the belief that capitalism is evil when the capitalist succeeds. We all want to succeed. I'm sure Michael Moore expects that his movie will make money. There is nothing wrong with that.

But, here's where I think America is headed down the wrong path.

I support Michael Moore's right to think what he wants to think and make all the movies he can sell. But what I fear is that Michael Moore and other polarizers like him don't oppose freedom. I agree with Nancy Pelosi when she warns that the rhetoric and vitriol is out of control. But it's hard to take this lecture from the same person who called the townhall protesters "Nazi's".

I see it on Facebook. I see it in the media. I see it in my friends. The problem is we often feel the need to convince others to think the same way we think. This is entirely natural and on the surface there's nothing wrong with this.

The problem comes when forget that we live in a pluralistic society. Just as I don't like being called evil, I don't countenance those who call left-wingers loonie, crazy or evil. Rather I want to bring us back to one of the fundamental promises of America: we can each do and think whatsoever we like as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

For my part, I've resolved myself to the fact that you can (and should) do whatever you want with your money and your life. I wish others would leave me alone and let me do what I think is best---instead of trying to re-educate me or convince me that I'm wrong. Furthermore, I don't want my tax dollars confiscated to support systems that I don't buy into or benefit from.

To get more current, I don't care what you do with your healthcare, as long as you don't take my money or mess with my healthcare choice. I don't care if GM fails, or if AIG fails. Maybe I should but I don't. I don't want my money propping up corporations with bail-outs, subsidizing corporate farmers or doing just about anything other than paving roads and building a strong defense. On the other hand, I realize I might be wrong. So I support your right to disagree with me.

But freedom means that I should be free to be "wrong". That's the whole point of freedom. You can't tell me what to think or do. I don't expect you to think the same way as me. Please don't expect me to think the same way as you. If I disagree with you I'm not evil. If you disagree with me, you're not crazy.

It seems to me that natural selection and the punishing realities of life should do the convincing, not shrill commentaries from Rachel Maddow and relentless haranguing by Rush Limbaugh.

You're free to listen to anyone you like, but don't expect me to think the same way. Don't tell me that I'm uneducated or uninformed. The truth is I am uneducated and uninformed about the issues that are important to you, but I know well the issues that are important to me.

Let's continue to enjoy a healthy pluralistic society. Let's not go the route of having a majority repress and suppress the minority. I really wish the government would stay out of the problems of the individual and focus only on shared problems.

Okay, we all remember those ugly days back in 2003, '04 when the market was going nuts, right? We Realtors would see that "perfect" home pop up on the MLS and immediately call our client, only to find out there were already 15 offers on said home. Gosh I hated those times. I hated submitting offers for happy buyers, and then have to turn around in three days and tell them, "The bank said SUBMIT YOUR HIGHEST AND BEST OFFER." And people did and prices went absolutely through thre stinkin' roof...hence here we are today.

We, here in Lake Arrowhead, (and I can only speak for this area) are seeing the multiple offers more and more. Like this weekend. I showed tons of property, two homes were GREAT deals. Even my cat knew they were great deals. And, like most repo listings, the comments stated, "Property must be on the market three days before submitting offers to bank."

WELL! Today was the third day and one of those deals of the century had nine offers on it, the other had MANY as well, I was told. One of the listing agents I spoke with is as frustrated as the rest of us. Why? Because the banks are accepting BPO's (Broker Price Opinions) from Realtors who have NO IDEA what these mountain homes should be listed at. NONE! But the banks are accepting these out-of-area Realtors' BPO's and making the listing agents list these homes at ridiculous prices.

My feeling is the right hand (bank) doesn't know what the left hand (Realtor) is doing. OR, the right hand doesn't even know the left hand.

Come on Banks/Realtors; get your poop together. OR, let my cat do your BPO's.

How To Add MP3 Files to your Blog

Marie Westerman, a REALTOR® member here from Georgia emailed me this morning and asked, "Brad how can I put a MP3 into a blog?" Knowing that there are probably other members wondering how to do this, here's a quick tutorial that will show you How To Add MP3 Files to a Blog Post.

VERY IMPORTANT TIP: Keep in mind that MP3 audio files should never be setup to "AutoPlay" on your Blog. Let your readers and listeners select if they want to hear it or not. If you set them up to "autoplay", you might scare the crap out of somebody when they load your post at 1:00am and their computer speakers are up full blast! lol~ This is the quickest way to get someone to close their browser on you!

Here's an MP3 player that is used for ODEO.com audio files and it works well here on AR. I used a funny example of an MP3 file just to make this Blog post a bit more fun and interesting. (It is NOT the actual AR Support Answering Machine)

Click the button on the player to listen.

This is the code you will need to place in the HTML tab when creating a new post. All you need to do is find the .MP3 file on the web that you want played, then replace the URL or web address you currently see in the HTML code highlighted below. Just erase the one that is there and replace it with the URL where YOUR MP3 file is located. For this type of MP3 embed, the file must be on the Internet housed on a server somewhere.

To use the embed code above, here's a site where you can copy the code to paste to your blog since the one above is only an image/screen shot and can't be copied and pasted. Click here to get the code.

Getting a bit more practical, here's an actual MP3 worth Listening to. It's a podcast MP3 by Marissa Mayar from Google talking about innovation at Google. This is the type of MP3 or Audio file that might bring more value to your readers listeners.

Aventura is a planned, suburban Miami city located in northeastern Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city name is from the Spanish word for "adventure," and was named "Aventura" after one of the developers of the original group of condominiums in the area remarked to the others, "What an adventure this is going to be."^[3] The name predates the well known mall (Aventura Mall) built near the condominium developments. According to the U.S. Census estimates of 2007, the city had a population of 29,475.^[4]

History

Most of what would later become the City of Aventura was initially developed during the late 1970s and into the 80s as a high-rise residential area by Oxford Development Company, when the area was still mostly swampland known as "Biscayne Gardens". Although Aventura functions as a separate city, it is still served by Miami-Dade Fire, Police and rescue, and the official addresses in Aventura are still Miami addresses. Aventura holds and funds its own police department also.

Aventura is also home to the Aventura Mall, a high-end regional mall which was developed by Ray Parello, Donny Soffer, and Eddie Lewis of Oxford Development and is currently owned by Simon Property Group and Turnberry Associates. The enormous success of the mall encouraged explosive growth in the area and includes an expansive AMC movie theater, as well as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, JCPenney, Sears, and Equinox. Aventura is a considerably new city in Florida which is noted for its good development, cultural activity and its effective government. Important Lesson - Giving when it counts...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness. The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will
save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in
bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did,
seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his
face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Some folks simply don't finish what they start. They become inconsistent and give up too soon to experience the results and rewards that can and will come from their Blogging efforts. Don't give up. Stay the course. You will only get out of it what you put into it. A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.

Be Creative With Original Ideas

Don't try to imitate other people. Be Yourself and don't be afraid of who you are and what you choose to share. You are unique and bring something of value to the table no matter who you are. Finding your own voice is really nothing more than using the same voice you talk to others with on the phone and in person everyday. You are original, now just be creative and share your originality.

Have a Purpose and Be Professional

Networking and Blogging require some time, direction, and focus. Avoid the pitfalls of being hurried, sloppy, and unprofessional. Your Blog and content are a direct reflection of who and what you are. Autograph your work with a signature of "quality!" Always be professional, ethical, moral, and kind towards others.

Mix it Up With a Variety of Content

Only posting charts, statistics, and marketing reports etc. will make your Blog seem like a marketing machine. Add a little color and flavor by creating a variety of personal, business, and hyper-local posts. You'll find that offering a variety of content on your Blog will bring you a variety of readers and visitors.

Know Your Topics and Share Your Experience

Not being informed about subject matter can be a "Bloggers Nightmare!" There's nothing worse than getting sucked into questions you can't answer. The research and time it takes you to find out about a topic or subject matter and get answers can be consuming and discourage you from Blogging again. Better to share what you do know and your experience, than to claim you're the expert at something you're not.

Engage Your Readers

Writing with no substance can be harmful or even fatal to your Blog. Writing content that draws the reader in and makes them want to come back for more should be the goal. Often, Bloggers will post articles that share only their view point and they aren't open for discussion.

Use Visuals To Make Posts Appealing

Try not to always write articles that are just a "Wall Of Words" No visuals or photos, or even worse... bad photos can do more harm than good. Having posts that are cosmetically pleasing to the eye will help to draw readers in and bring your topics to life.c

Be Careful Overselling - Everyone's a Buyer

Purely self-promoting blogging can come across to others as not giving anything of value, even though your product or service is the greatest on the planet. Remember that everyone wants to buy, but no one wants to be sold. This in my opinion is one of the key differences between WEB 1.0, and the new WEB 2.0 world.

Protect Your Reputation

You can't please all the people all of the time, but coming across in writing like you are scolding the reader, whether in a post or a comment, can lead to frustration and discouragement to both author and reader. Sharing your opinion just as I am here is better than creating deliberate conflict. Always treat others online as you would offline and in person.

Be A Blogger, Not Just A Visitor

Not enough content or consistency will slow down your traffic and returning visitors. Try to not be repetitive or let your Blog become stale. Finding the proper balance of how many times to post each week is up to you. I suggest a minimum of 2-3 times per week. Your readers will come back as often as you post. Whatever works for you, just be consistent.

Interacting, Conversing, Dialog and Threads

Being unresponsive to the readers and their comments will have a negative impact on your Blog. If you just "post & go" never returning to engage or converse with others, then the value of a good thread or conversation will be lost. Many Bloggers create posts where the greatest value actually comes from the dialog in the comments.

What's In A Title

Everything. Not just for SEO either. Having a catchy title can make the difference of whether someone wants to read your post or not. Taking a bit more time to come up with a good title that is relevant is worth the extra effort. Don't take title's for granted, and be careful using a catchy title that has nothing to do with your subject matter or topic.

Be Part of the Solution and NOT the Problem

Complaining, writing with negativity, and using a blog to attack others may be attractive to a certain audience, the question you have to ask yourself in this case is, "Is this the audience I wish to attract?" When sharing your opinions and experiences where there is a negative or questionable subject matter, try to find the roses and not the thorns, something that will help and benefit your readers.

Write With Transparency

Some Bloggers like to cut and paste from pre-written content that may not even be their own. Not being transparent can easily be detected in ones writing. Somehow that little 10pt font has a way of revealing more than you think. Be yourself, be sincere, be honest, and just be you. Don't plagiarize! As simple as this sounds, it is difficult for some, but must be overcome if you want to be a successful Blogger.

Participate - Read, Write, and Comment

This is a big and common mistake. Taking time to read will only help you learn and grow. Taking time to write will only better your Blog post quality and increase your traffic, visitors, and business. Taking the time to comment on others posts will only build your reciprocating visitors and traffic and will do miracles for building new and exciting relationships.

I share these thoughts, common mistakes, and suggestions with you today not because of what YOU are doing wrong, but because these are many of the things I have done wrong. I've had to learn much over the past couple years of Blogging. Call it trial and error, but most of what I have learned about Blogging was learned here, and by doing it wrong. At times, I do see others doing the same things. Sharing my own experiences and shortcomings might help you save some time and frustration as you press onward toward your own Blogging aspirations and goals. Making mistakes is how we all learn and grow.
