McWain Pond in Waterford, Maine Rich in History, Wildlife, and Recreation

The perfect lakefront getaway location in the Sebago Lakes Region is McWain Pond nestled, in the hills of Waterford, Maine.

Formally known as Long Pond, it is approximately 450 acres and has no public access. At 3 1/2 miles long, it's perfect for boating, water skiing and swimming. Fishing too! The spring-fed pond contains large and small mouth bass, smelt, sunfish and blue gills.

Legend has it that after David McWain settled in the area around 1775, he helped later settlers survive hard winters by selling his surplus corn at a low price. He is also rumored to have hid silver in pine trees to protect it from being stolen. Hmmmm . . . might be worth owning a piece of lakefront property here just to learn more about this latter story.

Tony Butterall, President of the McWain Pond Association, recently told me that according the the Lakes Environmental Association, which monitors the water quality of the pond, "We are in the moderate/high degree of concern, however, we are in the middle of a Watershed Improvement Project and have made some major improvements."

Since the early 80s, the Lakes Environmental Association (LEA) has provided extensive water testing on McWain. And in the last couple of years, LEA has been a key partner in the McWain Pond Watershed Project. The project aims to curb eroding soil that washes from surrounding land carrying phosphorus into the lake, the chief threat to water quality in Maine.

In 2008, the McWain Pond Watershed Project reduced nutrient pollution by an estimated 22 tons. In 2009, the project continues with erosion control for town and camp roads, plus the addition of vegetative buffers. All of this will help the McWain Pond Association achieve their primary goal "to preserve the water quality of the pond and the gentle quality of the environment around the pond for future generations."

The shoreline of McWain Pond is fringed with seasonal and year-round residences. It is also home to two summer camps. Birch Rock is a small residential camp for boys. It's located on McWain Hill and was founded in 1925 by William "Chief" Brewster and his wife Onie. The camp continues today under new leadership, but the property is still owned by the Brewster family. Camp Waziyatah is a co-ed residential camp. Disney filmed the TV show "Bug Juice" at Camp Wazi.

Within a five minute walk from Highland Lake in the western Maine Lakes and Mountains region we are fortunate to have an independent book store, Bridgton Books.

Located at 140 Main Street, Bridgton Books is a year-round, full-service shop. You'll find the Magic Lantern Movie Theater and Renys Department Store across the street.

Maybe it's because I love to read, but I thoroughly enjoy entering Bridgton Books. It's the ideal neighborhood shop where owners Pam and Justin Ward are often there to greet me. Sometimes their dog, Maddie, can be found lounging on the floor.

It's Fair Week in Fryeburg, Maine!

Known as Maine's Blue Ribbon Classic, the Fryeburg Fair is an 8-day agricultural fair held on 185 acres in the Saco River Valley.

Gates open at 7 a.m. and night shows begin at 8 p.m. This year's night entertainment includes NewFound Grass, Heartland, Kristy Lee Cook, The Kokomo Beach Show and Jamey Johnson.

The Fryeburg Fair has been a grand event for the last 159 years! It offers a piece of Americana that you shouldn't miss.

What's more fun than watching kids show their sheep, men exclaim over the latest in log splitting equipment and women compete in the skillet throw. Yes, the skillet throw. And one of the winners this year was . . . Kim Hanauer of Durham, N.C. It was Kim's first ever skillet throw and she tossed it 62-feet, 9-inches!! That's a long way to throw a heavy pan.

Roam the fairgrounds and you'll find games, rides, music, exhibits, pie contests, bright lights, brilliant colors and . . . fair food! Can't you just smell the popcorn, cotton candy and deep-fried oil? Or the Italian sausage sandwiches smothered in peppers and onions. My mouth waters for the Sunflower Farm pizza loaded with black olives and garlic. Oh, you can get pepperoni or plain, but trust me, the black olive and garlic is sooooooo good.

And the midway takes me back to my kid days. It's a wonderland of flashing lights, ringing bells and buzzing buzzers. Of course, no midway is complete without the "carnies" shouting, "Step right up. Everybody's a winner. Tons of prizes. Step right up."

Energy Row is back, adjacent to the Natural Resource Center, with renewable energy options on display including wind power, solar photoelectric panels, wood pellets and systems, outdoor wood and corn furnaces, generator power systems, geo-thermal power, gasification boilers and energy-efficient solar homes.

Parking is not an issue. You can either support local folks and organizations by parking on their lawns for a fee, or park at the fairgrounds for $5.

The Fryeburg Fair will run through Sunday, October 11th. Admission is $8 for adults, except $10 on Saturday and free for children under 12. So . . . this is your last chance to attend an agricultural fair in Maine this fair season.

Come roam the fairgrounds and eat some foods that you normally wouldn't eat. Visit the exhibit halls. Tour the museums. Marvel at the animals. Enjoy the people. Have fun.

Stoneham, Maine is Home to Picturesque Keewaydin Lake and the Peaceful Waters of Virginia Lake

Tucked away only 30 minutes from Bridgton and about the same from North Conway, New Hampshire, is Keewaydin Lake in Stoneham.

The breathtaking scenery, mountain views, big sky and sparkling water make this 307 acre lake a gem to spend time on. Few large boats are found on the lake and jet skis are not allowed, adding to its tranquility.

During July and August, the water temperature averages around 75-82, just right for a refreshing dip. And a dip is the perfect way to end the day if you've been out on the lake.

Joan Lundin, a lakefront owner, loves to explore the Striped Ledge. According to the Maine Geological Survey the Striped Ledge is "an unusual bedrock outcrop . . . this ledge consists of metamorphic rock (gneiss) intruded by granite and granite pegmatite. The white pegmatite in turn is cut by a complex swarm of many narrow black basaltic dikes, giving the outcrop an unusual striped appearance."

Visitors can access the ledge to view the cross-cutting basalt dikes by pulling a boat up to it.

Joan says, "The best thing I like about the lake is the quietness. It is so peaceful, even on supposedly the busiest weekends of the year, i.e. July 4th, there might be only three boats on the water."

The day I visited, a loon was calling. Joan said there has always been a set of loons on the lake and some years she has seen a baby riding on its mother's back.

If fishing is your thing, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife stocks Keewaydin Lake with brook trout, landlocked salmon and splake.

Another quiet fishing spot is located less than a mile away on Virginia Lake. Because of its small size at only 145 acres, and maximum depth of 28 feet, Virginia Lake doesn't see much boat traffic. Bartlett Brook flows into Keewaydin Lake from Virginia Lake, but is not accessible via boat.

The White Mountain National Forest borders this area, so hiking trails are easily accessible.

From Keewaydin, you can hike through Albany Notch, the natural passage between Peter Mountain and Albany Mountain, to Crocker Pond Road. You'll also find yourself close to Evergreen Valley, Blueberry Mountain, and others hiking trails in Evans Notch.

"The trails go on forever!" says Joan.

If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to visit. Stoneham is a "small town overflowing with tradition."

And part of that tradition is located just up Route 5 from Keewaydin Lake. A.J.'s Everything is a mom and pop operation where you'll find canned goods, bread, milk, newspapers, video rentals and great food in their dining room. Just remember, they don't accept credit cards, but they do have an ATM machine.

The Fryeburg Fair Kicks Off Sunday, Plenty to See and Do for Visitors to the Sebago Lakes Region

This year's edition of the Fryeburg Fair, Maine's Blue Ribbon Classic, kicks off this Sunday, October 4 with a horse show, sheepdog trials, and firemen's muster and ends next Sunday, October 11th, with a heifer show, a pig scramble, and harness racing. In between, every day is chock full of plenty to see and do.

The headlining entertainment this year is Country Music Association-nominated singer Jamey Johnson. His four nominations are for Best New Artist, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Also performing at the Fair this week are Heartland, American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook, The Kokomo Beach Show, Bob Charest Band, and an evening of fiddling and bluegrass music. Each show performs free in front of the grandstand starting at 8 pm.

Here are some of the highlights for the coming week:

Monday - Woodsmen's Field Day, Ox Pulling, Horse Pulling, Skillet Throwing, and the Bob Charest Band performs at 8 pm.

Tuesday - Antique Tractor Show, Dairy Show, Blueberry Dessert Contest, and New Found Grass performs at 8 pm.

Wednesday - Draft Horse Show, Beef Show, Pig Scramble, Horse Pulling, and Heartland performs at 8 pm.

Thursday - Show of working Oxen, Ox Pulling, Apple Pie Contest, Overall Champion Sheep, and Kristy Lee Cook performs at 8 pm.

Friday - Calf scramble, Pig scramble, Ox Pulling, Swine Show, and Kokomo Beach Show performs at 8 pm followed by fireworks.

Saturday - Grand Parade and trophy presentations, many 4-H shows, and Jamey Johnson performs at 8 pm.

Admission is $8 during the week and $10 on Saturday. Children are free and seniors are free on Tuesday.

6th Annual Brewfest This Saturday at Point Sebago Resort on Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine

Point Sebago Resort on Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine will once again be the host for the 6th annual Lake Region Brewer's Festival this Saturday, September 26th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Do you like the idea of sampling dozens of finely-brewed beers, enjoying plenty of good food, listening to live music, all while gazing out over the blue expanse of Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine? Then you need to show up tomorrow, this Saturday, on the shores of Sebago Lake, plunk down your $25 and start having a good time.

Around here we just call this event the Brewfest. It has become so well-known and such a popular draw in such a short period of time because of the popularity of micro-brewed and handcrafted beers. Couple that with a gorgeous outdoor venue and the great volunteer effort by the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce and you have a fun-filled day that now draws 2000 or more attendees.

Among the brewers participating this year are Allagash Brewing, Atlantic Brewing, Belfast Bay Brewing, Blacksmiths Winery, Boston Beer, Brays Brewing, Brooklyn Brewery, D.L. Geary Brewing, Dogfish Head, Great Beers/Wicked Wines, Green Mountain, Gritty McDuff's Brewery, Sebago Brewing, Kennebec River Brewery, Longtrail Brewing, Magic Hat Brewing, Harpoon Brewery, Oak Pond Brewery, Peak Organic Brewing, Redhook Ale Brewery, Run of the Mill, Sea Dog, Sebago Brewing, Sheepscot Brewing, Shipyard Brewing, Smuttynose Brewing, and Sunday River/Stonecoast Brewery.

In addition to the main attraction - gallons of handcrafted beers - there is also plenty of live entertainment, tons of great food, and a craft fair featuring dozens of area artisans.

So, if you're looking for something to do this Saturday, come to the Brewfest. The weather is going to be perfect, the beer will be cold, and for the $25 admission fee you'll be sure to walk away with a full belly and a smile on your face.

Brandy Pond in Naples, Maine is Home to the Naples Golf and Country Club

Located on Brandy Pond in Naples, Maine, in the heart of the Sebago Lakes Region, is Naples Golf and Country Club.

The Naples Golf and Country Club was established in 1921 with the fine front nine, then the back nine were added in 2000. The rolling fairways and views of Brandy Pond make this a premiere course in western Maine. About 2,000 feet of the course fronts the edge of Brandy Pond. Robert "Bob" Caron is the PGA Professional and General Manager of the club.

Gene Ferreira, who works in the Pro Shop told me his favorite hole is the 14th.

"It's an interesting par 5 with a pine tree smack dab in the middle of the fairway. Challenging," said Gene.

June Gyger also likes the 14th hole. "It's picturesque," she said.

According to Gene, playing the front and back nine is like playing two different golf courses. The back is narrower and more challenging.

The remodeled clubhouse features a full-service pro shop ready for repairs and sales. You'll find golf products from Cobra, Titleist, Ping and Callaway along with Ben Hogan, Tour Edge and AMF. Golf shoes are available from Foot Joy and Dexter, while there is clothing from Dockers, Ashworth, Page & Tuttle and Sun Mountain. Overnight regripping of clubs is available throughout the season.

Also located in the Club House is The Sandtrap Grille, which features panoramic views of the front nine, a full-service bar, outdoor deck and window seating. It's open during the season for a quick snack or a casual meal and is also available for banquets and other functions.

During the summer season you'll find golfers participating in a Scramble League on Tuesdays, Ladies League on Wednesdays and Men's League on Thursdays. Tournaments occur from spring till fall. Some are club tournaments, while others are special fundraisers.

One such fundraiser will take place on September 27th and is near and dear to Gene Ferreira's heart: Harvey's Second Annual Golf Challenge, which will benefit the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter at 1389 Bridgton Road in Fryeburg.

Gene said, "My wife and I run this event. She works at Harvest Hills. One hundred percent of the net proceeds go to take care of dogs and cats. We still have openings if people want to play."

Call 207.935.4358 to register for this benefit tournament. Registration is at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start to the scramble format at 9. A buffet lunch will follow. It costs $75/person or $300 for a group of four.

A Maine Lakefront Buyer's Twofer: Panther Pond and Crescent Lake in Raymond and Casco, Maine

Only twenty-two miles northwest of Portland and 2 1/2 hours from Boston, you'll find a two-for-one special for lakefront property buyers in the Sebago Lakes Region. Panther Pond in Raymond and Crescent Lake in Raymond and Casco are connected by the meandering and navigable Tenney River.

To access Panther Pond, you'll need to launch your boat at Crescent Lake on Route 85. Follow the Tenney River to the Panther Pond. The many twists and turns make this a scenic access point to the pond. The Tenney is shallow, slow moving and full of fish, especially bass.

Panther Pond was named for the wild animals which supposedly roamed its banks when Nathaniel Hawthorne was a young boy and lived nearby. The pond covers 1,439 acres and has a mean depth of 26 feet with a maximum depth of 68 feet.

From here you'll see the profile of Rattlesnake Mountain rising above the northern end. Dolly's Island is private and located just south of Betty's Neck, which juts out into the pond. Classic Maine cottages and summer camps dot the shoreline. As you boat, keep your eye out for eagles, osprey, kingfishers, loons and Canada geese.

And if you like to fish, you'll want to note these two things: the pond is stocked annually with landlocked salmon and according to a news story on WGME13, Mark Patoine of Raymond had the pleasure of reeling in the catch of the day on September 7, 2009, when he caught a 38-inch, 25 pound Northern Pike on Panther Pond.

Return on Tenney River to Crescent Lake, which is 4 miles long and 2/3 of a mile wide at its widest point. Fishermen say Crescent Lake consistently produces some of the best bass fishing in southern Maine. The most frequent catches include largemouth and smallmouth bass, landlocked salmon, white perch and cusk.

Both Panther Pond and Crescent Lake have Watershed Associations, who work to ensure that the water quality is maintained. The newly formed Crescent Lake Watershed Association is a grassroots group.

According to Ben Bragdon the group "aims to protect Crescent from threats like erosion and invasive species, hopes to bring other homeowners into the fold, [and] raise money and awareness of the programs that can keep the lake clear."

So . . . what are you waiting for? September is the perfect time of year to enjoy the tranquil lakefront settings these two bodies of water provide. Consider Panther Pond and Crescent Lake as a peaceful, relaxing places to vacation or call home.

Maine Lakefront Property Buyers Need to Keep an Eye on Interest Rates

If you're a prospective buyer of Maine lakefront property and you have cash, you can focus entirely on the lakefront real estate market alone to determine when you think it's time to get into the market.

However, if you need to employ the use of some financing to purchase your lakefront vacation home, you not only have to watch the ups and downs of the real estate market, but of the mortgage interest market as well. Interest rates, as you know, go up and down just like the prices of lakefront property.

If you're borrowing to buy, be careful that you don't get caught waiting for the real estate market to settle while interest rates start to climb.

At the moment, interest rates are holding fairly steady and lakefront real estate prices seem to be flattening out. There's still a large inventory of lakefront properties for sale and the buyers are still in control. In fact, this may be the best opportunity for buyers of lakefront property in years.

I checked with a few lenders around and these three all came in at 5.25%, or a little less, for a 30 year fixed rate - The Lender's Network www.lendersnetwork.biz, Regency Mortgage Corp. www.regencymtg.com, and Highland Mortgage Company www.highlandmortgage.net. Those a pretty good rates.

If you can find a property you like at a fair price this may be your best opportunity to lock in a great rate, if you have to borrow.

Highland Lake, in the heart of western Maine's Sebago Lakes and Mountains Region, provides a unique backdrop for the quaint village of Bridgton, Maine.

Located 45 minutes from Portland and just 25 from North Conway, New Hampshire, Highland Lake is one of the prettiest lakes in the region. It's approximately five miles long and stretches from downtown Bridgton to the edge of Sweden. The lake covers 1,334 acres and has a maximum depth of 50 feet with a mean depth of 20 feet.

Residents and visitors alike set out on the lake for fun in the sun. This picturesque setting is perfect for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, water skiing and more.

In the early morning you'll undoubtedly see several rowers. Members of the Maine Rowing Assoication keep their shells at Highland Lake. Each year they host a regatta-it's always the first Saturday in August.

With all of that activity, you'll be surprised how quiet it really is on the lake. Loons will greet you from any corner. Okay, so they aren't exactly quiet sometimes. But to hear them call to each other always stirs my heart. And occasionally you might see a moose.

The lake is best known for Brown Trout, Smallmouth Bass and White Perch. Trailered boat access is available a the town owned ramp located near the outlet. A boat wash station, constructed by the Lakes Environmental Association, is located behind the bathrooms in the parking lot. The Maine DEP considers the water quality to be above average.

With numerous islands, shoals, a couple of coves and undeveloped shoreline, there are plenty of places to explore and picnic. From the eastern shore, I love to watch the sunset on the Presidential Mountain Range of New Hampshire. You can't beat the natural beauty and serene tranquility of this intown lake.

Beside the boat ramp is a free town beach and playground. Across from the beach, you can access the Stevens Brook Trail, which winds it's way beside Stevens Brook all the way to Long Lake, about a mile and a half away. Walk across a wooden bridge over Stevens Brook to Shorey Park, and you can shop or eat in Bridgton.

In other words, Highland Lake has it all.
