The Chupacabra Caught?

It really does exist! Maybe! The famed chupacabra has apparently been found, and it's a Texan.

Or at least it was. The beast is now dead, but news of its capture near Blanco, Texas, inspired Bigfoot-sized searches. Lookups on "chupacabra" surged a whopping 571%, and related queries on "what does chupacabra mean" also roared. (For the record, its rough translation is "goat sucker.") The find also inspired renewed interest in the equally notorious Montauk Monster.

Jerry Ayer, owner of Blanco Taxidermy School, has possession of the mythical beast's body. According to CNN, the animal was discovered by one of Ayer's students. The student had "placed poison...to catch an unidentified animal that had gotten into a family member's barn." Little did the student know the animal in question was (maybe) the chupacabra.

In the video from CNN (which is pretty gross, so beware), Ayer shows off some of the unusual features of the animal, including abnormally long legs and teeth. It looks a bit like the world's ugliest (and meanest) dog.

Of course, this is hardly the first time someone has claimed to have captured the chupacabra. In years past, brave souls have spotted it in places ranging from Russia to Maine to the Philippines. Often the animal is spotted by folks who conveniently forget to snap a photo.

Not so this time. Ayer says he plans to preserve the animal and then donate it to a local museum so it can be enjoyed by others. As the taxidermist puts it, the beast is "a tremendous conversation piece." Sort of like the Mona Lisa or a really stellar collection of garden gnomes.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has new songs for Soboba

Inland audiences will get a taste of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's upcoming CD in their concert Wednesday at Soboba Casino.

Founding member Jeff Hanna said in a phone interview that the band would include songs from "Speed of Life" in its set. The album will be released Sept. 22 by Sugar Hill Records.

Hanna describes it as recorded live in studio over two five-day periods with a minimum of overdubs.

He said most of his favorite tracks are in the live show.

"There's a song called 'The Resurrection,' really cool tune. It's the story of a small town that's gone through some hard times and is struggling to come back. Another song, 'Speed of Life, by our friend Gary Scruggs wrote, is about paying attention, as much as you can -- living in the moment because it all goes by so quickly."

Hanna said the band, which has seen many changes in its 40-year-plus history, his in touch with its roots without ignoring the decades that followed.

"We've kind of shifted the set around in the last couple of years. It's more like the music we played in the early '70s than in was in the '80s and '90s, with a bit more emphasis on the rootsier stuff, which

The Workman House in Industry

As one of the oldest houses in California, the Workman House survives as a unique testament to the changing architectural styles and domestic tastes of the nineteenth century.

It originally stood as a simple three-room adobe, built shortly after the Workman family's arrival in November 1841. With the success of their cattle ranch, they continued to remodel the house by adding rooms. By the 1870s, new wealth in vineyards and wheat farming allowed them to completely transform the Mexican-era adobe into a modern American house, building a second floor, adding a variety of decorative details, and finishing the outside to resemble brick and stone. Believed to have been designed by early Los Angeles architect Ezra Kysor, the picturesque country home reflects the architectural tastes that were popular in mid-19th century America.

Today the exterior of the Workman House is restored to its 1870s appearance. The interior retains its appearance from the 1950s and awaits restoration. Visitors can see the house by taking a free guided tour.

The Workman House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a California State Historic Landmark.

Experience life on an early California rancho at the Homestead Museum's Romance of the Ranchos festival.

Visitors will get a taste of what life was like for people living in the Southland during the 1840s and '50s through music, historic house tours, visits with living history characters, adobe-making and blacksmithing demonstrations, food, family activities, and more. A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa , taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles, along for the company.

One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old poodle thinks, ‘Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, ‘Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?'

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. ‘Whew!' says the leopard, ‘That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!'

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, ‘Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, ‘What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says.

‘Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!

Moral of this story....

Don't mess with old farts .. age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! Bull*** and brilliance only come with age and experience.

Man arrested for DUI No. 7

A man accused of making an illegal U-turn in front of a Billings police officer was arrested for drunken driving.

Thomas David Herman, 41, was arraigned in District Court today and pleaded not guilty to what prosecutors said is his seventh DUI offense. Herman, who appeared by video from the county jail, also pleaded not guilty to a mis-demeanor charge of making an illegal U-turn.

Judge Susan Watters set bond at $50,000 after Chief Deputy County Attorney Mark Murphy described Herman's traffic record as "truly amazing" for a man his age. Herman has previous DUI convictions in 2001, 1999, 1998, 1993 and two in 1992.

According to court records, Herman was arrested Sunday after a police officer saw him make a U-turn across a double yellow line on Underpass Avenue. The officer said Herman did poorly on several field sobriety tests (Uh....yah...ya think !! ) and a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.167 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

Apparently this guy hasn't learned his lesson YET !! I want to know why is this guy still on the road ???

Here are some interesting facts about Montana Grizzlys and other bears too:

Ursus Arctos Horribilis

A female grizzly bear will give birth to a litter of 1 to 4 tiny cubs, which are usually born between January and March. The cubs are hairless and helpless, and stay with mom for 2.5 - 4.5 years. Siblings will group together for 1 - 2 years after leaving their mother.

Grizzly bears are found in Canada and in the states of Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, and Montana in America. A grizzly roams a territory between ten and more than three hundred square miles. Contrary to what many people believe, grizzlies usually live in forests, not near major lakes and rivers. See an entire site dedicated to America's grizzly bears, follow this track to Grizzly.

Grizzlies have been the theme of legends since before written history. In America, the native Indians feared and revered the grizzly. As far back as Indian lore tells us and the Lewis and Clark expedition, grizzlies were once abundant across most of America. Nothing epitomizes the American west like the image of a grizzly bear. Unfortunately, due to extensive hunting and trapping since the 1800's, the grizzly is today considered an endangered species.

Grizzlies embark on the search for a suitable den in early fall. As a rule, they search for mountain slopes where the snow will cover up their den until spring. This snow cover provides insulation and safety from other predators while they hibernate for half of the year. Accumulating body fat is important to survive the hibernation period, particularly for females who will give birth to cubs during this time.

Grizzlies eat almost anything available. However, contrary to popular belief, most of their diet consists of grasses and roots and wild berries (huckleberries). They are omnivores and love meat such as anything they can catch (fish, rodents and insects). If the opportunity presents itself, they will also eat buffalo, elk, deer, etc. Or... your garbage!

Norco Animal Rescue Team deserves OUR Support !!

Who are you gonna call when you have a real life horse emergency?? Why, Norco Animal Rescue Team of course !

The Norco Animal Rescue Team can get the call at anytime, with the latest being New Year's Day.

A horse tumbled into a ravine off Indian Truck Trail in the Cleveland National Forest. Within minutes of finding the animal, team members had it in a sling and it was hoisted to safety by helicopter.

"It can take about five or six minutes," said Berwin Hanna, a Norco city councilman and rescue team member. "You practice it enough, it just all falls into place."

The team has been around about five years but the idea of Norco residents pitching in when an animal needs help goes back further. That, in part, helped lead to the formation of the team, said Renee Power, Norco animal control superintendent.

Over the years, the team expanded to include separate groups to rescue animals, evacuate them to a safe area and care for them once they are housed at a base camp. The team is best known for its work at rescuing horses but has rescued smaller animals, such as goats.

"We don't limit ourselves to big animals," said Norco Fire Chief Jack Frye, who with Power helped formalize and train the team. "Whatever we're asked to do, we do it."

The team also does not limit where it will go. The members have rescued animals in fires from the San Bernardino Mountains to the San Gorgonio Pass and into San Diego County.

Just after being hired in 2004, Frye said, City Manager Jeff Allred asked him to meet with some residents already involved in animal rescue "to get them prepared to get into a fire scene.

"We started out with about 30 people trained in animal evacuation, animal first aid and how to recognize animal behavior," Frye said.

After about six months, team members were certified by the city as animal rescue agents.

Power pointed to the fires in San Diego County in 2005 as a time when the team got a real test. The group housed more than 300 animals at what she called a "very successful evacuation center.

"After that, we realized we had the ability to put a team together," Power said.

The team, headquartered at Norco Fire Station 22, now includes dozens of members who are trained in all facets of the operation.

Tuesday night, a half-dozen members involved in the New Year's Day rescue reviewed what took place that day and checked over the gear they used to make sure it is ready for the next call.

The bulk of the equipment is kept in a retired fire department rescue vehicle and a trailer donated to the team. The gear, also donated, includes everything from traffic cones to tools and an all-terrain vehicle to canes and a sled to move a large animal that is unable to stand.

The team also took time to take another practice run a putting a horse -- this one made of plastic -- in the sling. The team members spent only a few minutes putting on the sling and lacing it up. The team trains twice a month, Hanna said.

"We drill these people," Frye said. "We'd like them to be able to do this blindfolded."

Montana's Southern Cross ~ Ghost Town's continued....

Southern Cross received its name from a sailor. The ore mined at Southern Cross contained gold in a matrix of iron (hematite and magnetite). Most of the hard rock mining occurred during the time from the 1870's through 1910. In 1910, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company purchased the property, which they ceased to operate in 1919.

In 1965, the Bowman family built St. Timothy's Chapel in memory of their son. It is a beautiful, well-kept building located at the beginning of the old town site. The church is open to the public. In front of St. Timothy's there is a parking lot with a spectacular view of Georgetown Lake and the Pintlar Wilderness Mountains. The mining buildings and some of the older dwellings are still present. In fact, some are inhabited by people, mostly as summertime residences. Included in these mining buildings are the residences of former mine supervisors, hoist buildings, two boarding houses, and a bunk house.

Nicknamed "Montana's Silver Queen," Granite had its hey day in the early 1890's. It is located on Granite Mountain, just four miles from Philipsburg.

Eli Holland is said to have found a piece of high grade ruby silver while following a wounded game animal (deer or elk) in 1872. A shallow shaft was dug on the outcropping. Nothing was done at the site for over five years until Charles McLure found a piece of the silver ore on the shaft dump and thought the prospect showed promise. He traveled east to St. Louis where he obtained capital to begin exploration and development of the property.

The town eventually became a thriving city which boasted as many stores and commercial establishments as any other modern city at that time in Montana. One of the most famous buildings in Granite was a large Miner's Union Hall with a pool parlor and club area on the first floor and an office, a library, a large dance floor, and an auditorium space on the second floor. The second floor was called the "Northwest's Finest Dance Floor." Quite often the auditorium played host to mineral shows, melodramas, and vaudeville. Some of the other amenities Granite offered were 18 saloons, a thriving red light district, a roller rink, a hospital, five doctors, a school, four churches, several banks, a water system, named streets, and several homes for the more than 3,000 inhabitants. However, there was no cemetery. All of the bodies were internned in the Philipsburg Cemetery because the ground was so rock infested in Granite that a grave could not be dug.

In 1893, the U.S. Congress repealed the Sherman Act resulting in lower silver prices, and on the morning of August 1, 1893, within 24 hours of the repealment, many men, women, and children came down the mountain in search of new homes. Because of the swiftness of the move, most of their worldly possessions remained on the hill behind them. Only 140 people remained in Granite one year later, in 1894.

Whiplash the Cowboy monkey is truly a fan favorite, he is an international star and a true cowboy. He is an 18 yr old Capuchin Monkey and he is one of the biggest little monkeys in the world. Whiplash has been riding since he was two yrs old and has been a part of our family since he was born. Whiplash travels the country herding up wild Barbados sheep at rodeos and special events. His riding ability is unmatched and his herding skills unchallenged but whiplash never misses a chance to show his monkey heritage as he rides the dog he will pull the saddle from side to side and even hang off to one side mimic king an Indian hideaway.

Festival Activities

When you come to the Clark County Mule Festival, it is hard to tell what kinds of events that you might see. The one thing that IS certain...you will laugh and laugh at the antics of the mules and their riders! Below, you will find descriptions of some of the events that take place. These events are not necessarily listed in the order they will occur. Also note, there are other events that could take place at any time without warning. If you have a good idea for an event, please let us know. We would love to hear your ideas.

Mule Polo- This event is played only on Friday night in front of the grandstand. What started out as just a few people getting together to hit a ball around has turned into a great source of entertainment that kind of "kicks" off the Mule Festival. For those of you who have seen polo on tv played on horses...this is similar...kind of. Teams are divided up and sent out with hats and brooms. Teams are either "polka dots" or "straws," depending on the hat they have on. The teams must use their brooms to hit the ball into the "goal (2 barrels)" the opposing team guards. This can become rather entertaining as the mule sees a broom swinging underneath him or a large red ball land underneath his feet! Riders beware...the umpire will call "foul" anytime you use your broom to help move your mule forward. She DOES make you apologize in front of the crowd in any way she sees fit!

Team Penning and Roping- These two events are also on Friday night and start around 7 p.m. In the team penning, a team of 3 individuals are asked to sort out 3 specific steers and pen them in an enclosure at the other end of the arena. All three steers must be in the pen within 3 minutes. If any of the other steers come back across the halfway-mark of the arena, they must be herded back away from the three that are sorted out in the pen. The best time (with the correct 3 steers penned) wins. Roping is just like what you see at rodeos, only with mules. Some of these guys are really good, too! One man or woman ropes the horns of the steer and the other partner ropes the hind legs. Once again...the best time wins, as long as the "header" and "heeler" both catch what they are supposed to.

Grand Entry/ Mule Parade- At 10:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, the grand entry starts the days events in front of the grandstand. All participants with mules are encouraged to participate. The American flag leads the way, followed by the Missouri and Clark County Mule Festival flags. Participants are lead in and the audience is asked to stand as the National Anthem is played.

Back-to-Back- This contest involves 2 participants on 1 mule minus a saddle. Catch that? The 2 participants sit back-to-back, hence the name. One rider faces forward and one backwards. As the event proceeds, the riders are asked to switch positions, moving the rider in front, to the back and now facing backwards, and the rider in back moving to the front and now facing forwards. Here's the catch...neither rider can touch the ground in any way, shape, or form. As riders are disqualified, things are made harder. Now, when asked to switch positions, the mule must stay in motion. Then, an egg and spoon is added...and must stay in one rider's mouth as they switch positions, being careful not to lose the egg. This contest is definitely a test of agility, balance, and trust of the mule.

Dumb Waiter- Once again, this contest involves 2 riders on 1 mule, one facing forwards and one facing backwards. This time, they are allowed to use a saddle. At the far end of the arena sits a bucket of water on a barrel. The rider in the back is given a cup. The 2 riders race to the other end, fill the cup with water, race back, and dump their water into the empty bucket at the starting/finish line. Their must be a "measurable" amount of water poured into the empty bucket. Winner is determined by the fastest time.

Pantyhose Race- Two participants are needed, each on their own mule. Each takes a leg of the pantyhose and runs to the other end of the arena and around the barrel. The team with the fastest time-and their pantyhose still intact- wins.

Musical Tire- If you have ever played musical chairs, this works the same. The only difference is- tires instead of chairs. Tires are placed around the arena in a circle. Contestants ride around the outside of the tires while the music plays. Some of the tires are removed at this time. When the music stops, the race is on. Each contestant tries to get to a tire and stand on it. Those left without a tire are out and the game continues until there is only one person left on a tire.

Tack on a Trailer- For those of you who have lots of tack and not a lot of time, this is a game very similar to life. All participants are let into the arena with their mules. Then, all the tack is taken off the mules and put on a trailer, which is at the opposite end of the arena from the participants. Now that the mules are running loose in the arena...the contestants are allowed to make a mad dash to catch their mule, find their tack (or someone else's), saddle up, and be the first to ride back across the finish line. Does this sound like utter chaos? That makes it all the more fun! Will they get the saddle on the correct way? Will they find the correct tack? Or for that matter, will they find the correct mule?!

Dotty Parton Race- For those of you who are familiar with country music and Dolly Pardon, you know she is a...ummm....very well-endowed woman. To control her assets, she needs a very large piece of equipment. This race has one lane for women and one lane for men. The men are given a very large bra at the start line. They then proceed to the far end and put the bra on. A bucket of water balloons awaits them. They must then place a water balloon in each side, remount their mule, and race to the finish line. Sounds easy? Most of these mules don't run at a very smooth pace. This leads to the problem. When the water balloons get to bouncing, they get to breaking! Will they break in the bra, on the saddle, or elsewhere? Women who wish to participate in this event must use the other lane. Putting a bra on is an everyday occurrence and much easier for a woman. Therefore, women are given a protective cup to put on when they reach the end of the arena. Yes, they must put water balloons inside of them, too.

Monkey-in-a-Tree- This race involves two contestants on one mule. They race to the other end of the arena where a rope hanging from a forklift awaits. The "monkey" grabs hold of the rope and must hang there without touching the ground while the other contestant rides around some barrels. Some of the mules aren't real sure about getting close to "that thing" swinging on a rope about eye-level. Once the "monkey" is behind their partner on the mule, they race to the finish line for the best time.

Coon Hunter's Race- Parked at the far end of the arena are a truck and trailer. Contestants ride down, dismount, and load their mule into the trailer. The contestant then runs around the truck and trailer to come back and unload their mule. They then remount and race to the finish line. Oh yeah...don't forget to latch the gate when you load and unload. You could lose your mule while running around the truck or lose your great time for not latching the gate when you unload.

Pick-up Race- This works like the Pony Express. One rider is at each end of the arena. One is on a mule and one is on the ground. The first rider rides the mule to the other end and dismounts, where the awaiting rider mounts the mule and rushes to the other end of the arena. The best time wins.

Mule Jumps- Mules are renowned for their ability to jump. This contest showcases that ability. Mules are divided up into two categories based on their height. Each mule takes their turn at the jump. After each mule has tried to jump a certain height, the bar is moved up until their is only one mule in each category left to declare as the winner.

Costume Contest- Halloween is such a fun time and mules have such character. Why not combine the two during the Clark County Mule Festival? Contestants dress themselves and their mule(s) up and compete for the trophy. How is the winner decided? The audience helps the judges decide who the winner is by applauding and cheering for their favorite costume. Need some ideas? Contestants have come in dressed as the Beverly Hillbilly's, clowns, and many more. Use your imagination and create limitless possibilities to please the crowd.

Halter Class- If this class were taken literally (and it has been), the halters would be judged. However, this has become a more serious class. Mules are brought in by their handlers wearing only a halter and lead rope. The judges look at the mules and decide which mule has the best conformation. Conformation is how well a mule is "put together," or made.

Arena Race- The arena race has come to mark the end of the Mule Festival every year. Contestants line up at one end of the arena. They must make 3 laps around the arena as fast as possible. Whoever reaches the finish line first, wins.

Some towns seem to have more than one life. Some even have more than two. Garnet has had three, so far. And who knows there will not be a fourth? About Garnet, one could say "gone today but here tomorrow." Garnet came alive the first time in 1862 as a gold mining town. It is recorded that the "Nancy Hanks" mine poured out $10,000,000 in gold. The mine was owned by two partners. After a disagreement, one partner sold his share to the other for $50. He later hanged himself. The mine operated until 1954 when it was closed. There is much to be seen today in Garnet including many of its original buildings.

another miner's cabin Folks still live here preserving and researching the remaining buildings and artifacts that are still being found in the area. Some of the buildings were burned down in a 1912 fire. One lady lived there her whole life until she died in 1960. One of her descendants lives in her home now. Gold, Copper and lead had been mined here. Some of the property is still owned by the descendants of the original settlers and they will not give it up or sell it to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management which oversees the other properties.

Long the county seat of Granite County, Philipsburg has a rich history in mining and ranching. The roots of the area started as a booming mining town in the late 1800's. It's historic downtown is full of beautifully restored buildings from that era. Today these buildings are full of friendly shops, saloons, and other enjoyable establishments. Situated 30 miles south of I-90 on the famous Pintler Scenic Loop, also known as Montana Highway 1, the picturesque town is halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier Parks, and only about an hour from the Missoula (78 miles) and Butte (52 miles) airports. Per the location, the area offers many outdoor attractions - all year long.

This is the Broadway hotel.

The town of Phillipsburg, once the hub of a successful mining operation, has dwindled to only a fraction of its former size. Some of the residents have even taken on the slogan, "greatest living ghost town." Yet in the last few years, the town has capitalized on both its history and scenic location to transition into a tourist enclave. When the old Broadway hotel, which had not been functioning as a hotel for about a hundred years, was restored, the town took another step in the direction of revitalization.

Philipsburg was named after the inventor of square-set mine timbering, Philip Deidesheimer. His first name was easier to say than his last. The town was often referred to as "The Burg." Philipsburg was settled in 1866 as a trading center for the various nearby settlements.

Philipsburg is famous silver country and another exceptional camp that still lives. Here was the Hope Mill, the first silver mill in Montana, which doubled as a fort when Indians went of the warpath. A mile away is Granite, the greatest silver producer of all.

The area later known as Norco is called Orchard Heights

Rex Clark, through his development company, THE NORTH CORONA LAND COMPANY, purchases Orchard Heights; 15 square miles of semi- successful farm land. Clark himself purchases 600 acres on which he plans to build a home away from home - "The Lodge". Clark's residence was actually located on the second largest property in Pasadena; only the Huntington was larger.

Clark's plan was to sell 1-10 acre parcels to individuals who wanted to enter the poultry, rabbit or agricultural endeavors.

1923

Orchard Heights has been renamed Norco and holds a grand opening on May 13, 1923

Norco is an enormous success soon becoming the poultry capitol of California. Lettuce, melon and alfalfa output soon leads California and, at times, the nation.

The Norco Store and Grill is the site of multiple regional meetings

1924

Hot mineral water is discovered on Clark's personal property and the idea of a resort is born.

1926

Clark announces he will build the greatest resort in America

1927

August 15, 1927, ground is broken for the Norconian.
December 15, 1927, Outdoor pools poured in 24 hours.
September 3, 1927, Lake excavation begins.

1928

March/April. Tea Room is the first part of the resort to open.

Edison, new to Norco (as is electricity), outfits the first all-electric commercial kitchen in Riverside County.

October. Lake is finished (required one month to fill) May 22, 1928. Pavilion Opens. 1st event; Regional Meeting Of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce.

1928

The Norconian Resort is built with primarily materials produced and/or manufactured in Norco.

Workman represent every state in the union and payroll hits highs of $25,000 a week.

Power Plant is most modern in California, perhaps nation, goes into operation mid year.

Oak Knoll nursery is purchased and moved in its entirety to Norco from Pasadena; establishing the largest nursery in Riverside County.

The Golf course is finished in December.

The course is designed by legendary golfer and designer John Duncan Dunn.

May 20

May 20, the American Olympic diving and swimming team participates in the grand opening of outdoor pools. At the time, the Norconian pools are the only outdoor competition pools in Southern California.

Cecily Cuhna sets the world record for the 400 meter swim on that day.

1928

The Pacific Coast Championships in diving and swimming are held at the resort. For the next decade plus, all Olympic athletes who competed as divers and swimmers at the Olympics of 1928, 1932, 1936, and the cancelled 1940 events; trained, competed and exhibited at the Norconian.

Olympian Duke Kahanamoku was a Norconian regular who gave surfing Demos in the Lake.

	1929	February 2, 1929; Grand Opening. A huge event. In attendance, local, regional, statewide and national dignitaries. Buster Keaton, Mack Sennett, Charlie Chaplin and more. Work is begun on the chauffeur's quarters, laundry and garage.
	1929	The Corona Theatre Opens August 29, 1929 with the film "New York Nights". Buster Keaton, John Barrymore, Charles Chaplin, Clara Bow, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith, Irving Berlin and dozens of other stars attend the opening. They all bunk at the Norconian.
	1933	Marshal S. Boggs Crashes and is killed at LNC 26 Jan 1933. Boggs was the first test pilot to use radio navigation. At the time of the crash, he was working for the Federal Aviation Administration as an inspector.
	1930 - 1941	Completed resort consists of hotel, complete bathhouse with male and female identical bath complexes (two indoor pools, steam rooms, etc), competition diving and swimming pools, air field, lake, golf course, walking and riding trails, tennis courts, full service laundry, garage, service bays, gas station, dining room, ballroom, lounge, café, Tea Room Terrace, Lake Pavilion/Casino, gardens, acres of green grass

	1930-1941	Will Rogers is a regular guest at the hotel, using the air field to arrive and depart. Amelia Earhart using the Norconian air field to practice landings and take offs.
	1930-1941	The Lake is the site of several speedboat races with the greatest drivers of the day competing. Several films were shot at or in the surrounding area of the Norconian; "Top Speed", "Their Own Desire", "Love in the Rough", "Walking on Air", "Test Pilot".
	1930-1941	The site was a haven for movie stars who dropped in to use the baths, golf course, etc. A short list; Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Joe E. Brown, Joan Crawford, Myrna Loy, Johnny Weissmuller. etc.
	1930-1941	Sports Stars were also regulars; Babe Ruth, Helen Wills, Red Grange, Jack Dempsey, and others.
	1930-1941	MGM held their company picnic at the site in 1938. Fox in 1940 And Disney in 1938. "Gone with the Wind" premiered in Riverside at a sneak preview, but, the execs, director and writers stayed at the Norconian that night. The hotel closes in November of 1941.

	1941-1957	The United States Naval Hospital in Corona opens December 8, 1941. First Patients are Pearl Harbor survivors. Captain Jensen is first commanding officer and is himself a survivor of Pearl Harbor.
	1941-1957	Film Star Kay Francis is in charge of moral. Hollywood stars, formally guests of the Norconian, now regularly entertain patients; George Raft, Gary Cooper, James Cagney, etc. Many radio shows aired from the site, including the Jack Benny program.
	1941-1957	The Corona/Norco chapters of the USO, Navy Mothers, Navy auxiliary, American Legion, etc. set records for visits and bond fundraisers to the hospital. At WW II's peak there are 5000 patients. Isolation wards are built on the eastern portion of the golf course to care for Marine and Navy tuberculosis and malaria patients. The first usage of penicillin to treat these illnesses occurs on this site.
	1941-1957	The site was the designated polio facility on the west coast. This was one of the first places the polio vaccine was used in the nation. A gigantic hospital wing was added to the hotel in 1943, prompting a visit from Eleanor Roosevelt.. Two Navy corpsman from the period state President Roosevelt was a secret visitor who, in his last days, found comfort in the baths. Soon a chapel, additional barracks, gymnasium, nurse and corpsman quarters and theatre were built.

	1941-1957	The stained glass in the chapel is commemorative of heroes. The hospital was a pre-eminent facility for rehabilitation of wheelchair bound soldiers. Advances in prosthetics, recovery and rehabilitation were phenomenal. The Rolling Devils was likely the first organized wheelchair basketball team in the nation and almost unbeatable.
	1941-1957	The Hospital closed in 1949 only to re-open a few months later for Korea. The hospital closed for good in 1957. In 1950, many of the most intelligent people in the world were assembled to test weaponry. Decades and many name changes later, this top secret lab is known as the Naval Surface Warfare Assessment Center.
	1962-1963	94 acres is given to the California Department of Corrections and the California Rehabilitation Center is born; the first State backed drug addiction treatment program in the nation.
	2000	19 structures are placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
