Nashville, TN - The Athens of the South

Nashville, Tennessee has had many nicknames. Because of all the rocks strewn over the landscape, it was known as "Rock City". Today, it is known as "Music City USA" because of its ties to Country Music and the Grand Ol Opry. But before Nashville was dubbed by its current nickname; it was known as and is still referred to by many as: the "Athens of the South".

Nashville earned the nickname, "The Athens of the South" by the mid 18th century. Nashville established numerous higher education institutions which were unusual for the South. Furthermore, Nashville was one of the first Southern cities to establish a public school system. Under the influence of several prominent citizens, the concept offering a Classical Greek education was embraced by many.

The curriculum included courses in philosophy, Latin, logic, and rhetoric. Nashville’s progressive pursuit of establishing itself as a center for higher education, earned it the tile of the "Athens of the South". Prior to the Civil War, Nashville was known to be one of the most elegant, refined and educated Southern cities, filled with wealth, charm, theaters, and all the culture of the antebellum era.

Wanting to live up to the "Athens of the South" nickname, the State decided that a centennial exposition be staged. This exposition was to coincide with its 100th anniversary of Statehood. The site for the exposition was held at the old West Side Park a former race track located on the outskirts of Nashville.

Because the Parthenon was to the pinnacle of exposition, it was the first and the most important building to be erected. The exact replica of the Parthenon of ancient Greece was started in 1895 to allow ample time to finish the construction. The "politically delayed" expo was held in 1897.

When the original wood, plaster and brick structure was to be torn down a few years after the expo, the community outcry was intense. Demolition was stopped and the building sat in a state of disrepair. In the early 1020’s, the City decided to rebuild the Parthenon on the site of the original structure. The project took 11 years to complete. The 7 ton bronze doors that adorn the east and west entrances are the largest of their kind in the world today.

Today, the Parthenon stands as the centerpiece of Centennial Park. Nashville's Parthenon is the only full size replica of its kind in existence. The piedmont reliefs on the east and west sides were cast from the original ruins that are now housed in the British Museum of Art.

In the early 1990's, a massive renovation project was started. Local Nashville artist, Allen LeQuire, was hired to sculpt the almost 42 foot tall gold leaf statue of Athena that adorns the central hall. She is the height of the original Athena and is the largest indoor statue in the western hemisphere.

Today, Athena stands high on a hill and looks over Nashville much like she did several thousand years ago when she resided in ancient Greece. Just like she did in days of old, Athena faces east guarding and protecting the city that bears her name and likeness; Nashville, TN ~ "The Athens of the South"

Lighting of the Green...

Lipscomb University's 5th annual Lighting of the Green was held this past Tuesday night. This annual event was hosted by singer/songwriter Amy Grant.

The lighting of the green is more than a kick-off to the annual Christmas season. Lipscomb has partnered with 2nd harvest food bank to raise money and 300,000 pounds food for the thousands of Tennesseans hard hit during this economic period.

This years line up included greats such as former Gaither Vocal Band singer Guy Penrod. Guy sang several solos and joined with Amy on stage to do a few duets.

The shortest artist on stage was none other than Nasville's own, Brenda Lee. The crowd got to really rocking as she belted out, "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree". This 'ol gal still has quite a set of pipes.

The family ensemble, The Amy Moses band performed several Christmas songs. The group has an up-coming PBS airing. The event was shot in the theater on Lipscomb's campus.

Singer/songwriter, Buddy Greene, told the story on how one of my favorite Christmas songs, "Mary Did You Know"came to be. His performance of this beautiful song was just as touching as the story behind it.

To honor our troops, Lipscomb has partnered with the Vetrans Administration to allow all returning Veterans to attend the college for free. This years lighting of the green was performed by 3 "Yellow Ribbon" Veterans.

Special thanks go out the talented musicians, lighting and sound technicians, artists, and others who donated their time to make this event possible. If you missed this years event, there will be one next year.

We can all learn from Rosie the Riveter...

Of all the images and posters generated during the WWII era, none is more famous than Rosie the Riveter. IMHO, Rosie embodied the true grit and gumption that this nation was founded upon. The embodiment that yes, when we ALL work together, as a NATION, there is nothing that WE cannot accomplish.

It saddens me when I look upon this Nation's state of affairs. The hardships that American people, families, and business are having to endure is frightning. We can blame whomever we want. The right, the left or those in the middle. Pointing the finger of blame will not and has not ever accomplished much.

Like Rosie, maybe it is time that the Presidency, Congress and the American People get on the same page. Spending trillions of dollars and generating a deficit that God only knows how we will repay is not the answer to our economic woes.

Maybe, just maybe, if we all roll up our sleeves; and made the decision to let our own personal agendas go; start thinking about what is right for our country and not our political party affiliation; then maybe, just maybe, as a Nation we can be prosperous again.

Like Rosie the Riveter, are you willing to roll up your sleeves, pitch in and be a part of the solution?

Good-bye Fall 2009...

In most parts of this great nation, fall 2009 is a mere memory. Gone are the brilliant colors. Gone is the crunch of leaves under one's feet. Gone are the squeals of children, jumping in the piles you so worked so hard to rake. Yes, fall 2009 is just a memory.

While looking through the many pictures I took this year, this is one of the few that I took on the Scenic Harpeth River that meanders through Franklin, Williamson County and Metro Nashville. In Tennessee, the "Scenic" designation means that it is a protected water way...

Knob & Tube Wiring...

has been around for several years, and is quite prevalent in many of the older, more established neighborhoods in Nashville, TN and other markets across the country. These are relatively safe systems IF, like sleeping dogs, you let them lie.

However, folks just L-O-O-OVE to tinker. And for some reason, they just L-O-O-OVE to tinker with electricity. ((sigh)) They just get out the tape and wire nuts and go at it and leaving things as they are. Talk about dangling participles...

Now this statement can be taken several different ways. Such as in Plumbers Rock! They are cool! Hip beyond belief and all that other raz-ma-taz. Yeah Buddy!!!

Or you can say plumbers rock. That pile of stones used to hold up sagging pipes because they were out of plumbers strap or just too lazy to crawl out and get some. P-FFT! The home owner will never know. Either way, what can I say? Plumbers Rock...

Just Because They Are a Licensed Electrician...

Just because they are a licensed electrician...

doesn't mean that the job has been done right. While inspecting a property in the Nashville real estate market the other day, I came upon several wiring inconsistencies. The property owner stated that a friend of theirs was a licensed electrician, and they made several "repairs and updates" to the electrical system.

HUH? Well I guess that these folks will either need to get a new friend or a REAL licensed electrician out to address the many repairs that were written up in the report. These are just a few. So you still think that you don't need that home inspection?

Keying on the right color...

Chroma-Key or green screen technology is a studio technology that has been around for awhile and is constantly improving. When I got my MAC, I was fascinated that iMovie had the ability to do chroma-key or green screen. As quickly as I was enamored, I was just as quickly dissatisfied with this program due to its lack of control and functions.

Good quality video requires good quality software. Period! Making decisions based on the computer platform (MAC), software capabilities, and business plan, I settled on Final Cut Pro. Now started the up-hill battle, the learning curve.

Chroma-key lighting has to be precise. If your artist is too close to the screen, backwash, will create a corona, that will be difficult if not impossible to key out.

Your project will need to be layered. By that, I mean, that your background picture or video needs to be the bottom layer. Your "keyed" artist needs to be the next. By using the chroma-key tool, adjust the bandwidth, saturation, illumination to remove the bulk of the interference from your background. Use the thin edge and smoothing tools to "round out" the effects and enhance your artist.

Although this is a quick overview, by a lot of practice and tons of mistakes you will be able to put together videos similar to the one that I produced for ActiveRain's own Anthea Click from Fresh Perspectives Home Staging...

Photo blogging is more than taking pictures...

Most folks who know me, know that I love photography. That being said, is it any wonder that I would join William Johnson's ActiveRain Photo Blogger Group?...

Photo blogging takes on another dimension when one couples all the segments of video, photography and of course, paid for, royalty free music. In this video for the Cool Springs Chamber of Commerce, I sped the video segments up 500% to create high speed action to augment the music.

The one second pictures, were added to show a blend of people and places.

Motion text created in Motion3 adds another dimension of intensity to the movie. Many of these same techniques can be created with Sony Vegas for those PC users...

Ever met one of those folks that are really weird? You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones that have that mentality where they seem to live in a world of grays. Most folks say that they have a distorted point of view...

To the photographer, having a distorted point of view of the world is considered art. While walking through the "Arcades" section of downtown Nashville, TN the other day, I got fascinated by the distortions of the buildings reflected in the windows.

Does this mean that I am sick and demented? I hope not! Sometimes having a distorted point of view is not all that bad...

Chipmunks...

I can remember falling in love with the Disney characters Chip & Dale when I was a kid. However; as cute they may be in on the silver screen, in the back yard they can be very destructive.

Having created a backyard natural area with the water features and plants, the setting was a perfect invitation for critters of all types. And yes, the chips, thinking that this was prime real estate in which to raise a fam, moved in - lock, stock and barrel.

While cute to see at first, cuteness soon wore away when I discovered that they were gnawing holes in the underground pump lines. And, who wudda thunk that they would chew holes in the pond liner? Gr-r-r-r! Several hundred dollars and much aggravation later, the decision was made. Cute or not, the chipper relocation program had to commence.

Humane, small animal traps can be purchased rather inexpensively from many on-line retailers. Once an animal is trapped, they will be frightened. During the trip to their new home, cover the cage with a towel or blanket. This gives them security and comfort during the ride to their new home.

As always, wear leather gloves when handling cages that contain wild animals. Many have rabies, and wild animals big or small bite when frightened.

Which is the Right Camera Lens for You?

Yesterday, Judi Barrett posted an interesting question - what was the right camera lens for her needs? The answer, it depends.

Glass for SLR's or DSLR's can get expensive. The cost of the lens will be directly related to the size, MM focal length, and the f-stop rating. The lower the f-stop, the better the optics, hence, higher price.

What do you want to do? Should be the determining factor. Will you be mainly shooting close ups? Out-door scenes? Wildlife? Buildings? Sports? Night scenes? Once you have determined your primary use, then select a lens that will fit your price range and need.

There are many "shot-gun" lenses on the market. By shotgun, I am referring to a wide range of focal lengths. Avoid getting too wide a range. The wider the range, the more distortion you will experience. I generally try to stay within 100-150 mm range if possible. Additionally, if the lens has a shoe mount, it will be heavy.

Low light or night shots will need a tripod period! You just cannot hold the camera still that long. Even the best photographer can only hold the camera still for 1/8th of a second with out getting a blurred shot. A good tripod is a must.

Action shots depend upon speed. Good lighting is essential. While the size (MM) of the glass will get those close-ups, the fast action of the shutter will prevent blur. I have gotten excellent shots sports shots using a 300MM f-4.5 lens.

Auto/Manual focus. Today's world has left many novices in the auto focus world. Save for wildlife or fast action shots, I use manual focus. Manual focus lenses will work on most DSLR's. Auto focus lenses will be more expensive.

Pawn shops and used camera shops next to colleges or universities are excellent places to purchase good used lenses at a fraction of the price. Use CASH! Money TALKS! Determine what you want to pay and lay the money down. You will be surprised how many times you can walk out with a good deal.

This is only a short guide that I hope will help you make some decisions. Nothing is worse than spending a lot of money for a lens that just sets in your camera bag gathering dust.

Yesterday was one of those "Picture Perfect" afternoons to visit downtown Franklin, TN. Nice warm autumn afternoon temps and plenty of sunlight brought out folks out by the droves. Looks like I was not the only person out to cop a few rays and enjoy the afternoon.

I am currently working working on a project commemorating the life of a local businessman and Rotarian. Although I never met the man, I feel that I have come to know him through the hearts and memories of his family and friends.

Veterans Day 2009...

This posting will only be one of a gazillion posts honoring Vets on Veteran's today. Being a vet, today, I welcome the words, "Thank you for your Service." For me and others in my era, it was not always that way.

Having fought in an unpopular war that had our Country divided, we were looked down upon, spat upon, ridiculed, and verbally abused. "War monger!" "Baby killer!" were the welcome cries for many veterans of my era. Rarely was heard, "Thank you for your Service."

Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can really hurt you. Even though these cut through to the very fabric of my soul, I held my head high. In my heart of hearts, I knew that I served my Country well. Like soothing save on a terrible wound, I would have welcomed the words, "Thank you for your Service".

I was Honored to be able to give these folks and generations to come the freedoms that they have and take for granted.

Pride that so many others along with me did what so many chose not to do. We put it all on the line for our Country. Many, paid the ultimate sacrifice.

America and Americans are not perfect. Current personnel and Veterans alike take an oath to serve and defend this Nation with their most precious possession - their lives. Maybe that is why they call it "The Service." Think about it! Would YOU be willing to do this? Take a moment and thank a vet. Tell them from your heart of hearts, "Thank you for your Service."

Photo tips - Framing your subject...

One of the easiest and most often overlooked techniques in photography is framing your subject. While comparing photos from several photographers on a video that is being done for the Cool Springs Chamber, many took a photo similar to this one of Aspen Brook Center.

Three feet to the left was a small tree. I used the tree to frame my subject and provide a total different result.

Framing your subject is a technique that can be used on people, places, and buildings. Take a moment to stop, look and think before you shoot. You will be surprised what you too can create when you use this simple technique.

The Cool Springs area of Franklin, TN, is an area that has grown rapidly over the past few years. Not too long ago, it was a wide spot in the road off I-65. An exit to get gas or change a tire on your way to Nashville.

The tree filled hills, and farms that dotted this area have been replaced by homes and commerce.

A little known reprise in the daily rush, is this place on Carothers Pkwy. A place often overlooked as folks rush to and fro☺☺☺
