It's a go for new Justice Complex in Little Falls

It's official... The Little Falls Township Council approved a construction plan for the new Justice Complex. The Complex will house both the Police Department and Municipal Court and it will be attached to the existing Township Municipal Building.

The plan would exceed the $4.4 million the township borrowed for the work by only $300,000 whereas a competing plan would have overrun that number by $900,000.

A multitude of safety violations at the current Police and Municipal Court building on Stevens Avenue - built in 1914 - made the new facility a necessity.

PATERSON - Passaic County Office of Recycling and Natural Resource Programs will hold a two-day Computer and Electronics Recycling collection event for used computers and electronic equipment.

The event will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, Friday, May 8 for businesses and residents.

The second day is for residents only 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, Saturday, May 9.

Both events are at the Passaic County Para-Transit Facility, 1310 Route 23 north in Wayne, located behind Ski Barn.

Pool badges are now available for those residents who responded by mail and can be picked up at the municipal building. Since a few of you enjoyed my first Jersey Music post about that Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen and most people were more familiar with his later more mainstream work, I thought I'd share one of his more popular concert songs - which was included on his third album - Born to Run.

Jungleland

This is a poetic tale of life on the streets of New Jersey.

Springsteen and the E Street Band performed this live for over a year before they recorded it. It developed into a longer song with a grand sax solo when it was finally released.

This features the piano of Roy Bittan. He joined The E Street Band for Born To Run after playing in orchestra pits on Broadway.

This was a highlight of Springsteen's 1999 reunion tour with The E Street Band. The tour went very well, and the band continued to play and record together.

ATTENTION ALL LITTLE FALLS, TOTOWA, WOODLAND PARK RESIDENTS:

Local government prepares for everyday emergencies. Howerver, during a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm conventional emergency services. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a volunteer, all-risk, all-hazard training program provided in conjunction with PVOEM. This valuable course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your neighors and your neighborhood in an emergency situation.

Call the Woodland Park PVOEM 973-256-1264 to request an application. Completed applications have to be mailed back to Woodland Park PVOEM, Attn: George Galbraith, 5 Brophy Lane Woodland Park, NJ 07424 before classes begin. You can also download an application on wpnj.us and mail the completed form to the said address.

PVOEM CERT members receive 20 hours (5 evenings) of initial training where individuals learn skills for the opportunity to assist PVOEM at local incidents. The PVOEM CERT team members from all three towns hold regular meetings and additional training courses throughout the year.
PVOEM CERT is provided free of charge to anyone 18 years or older.

Behind the music...a Jersey Boy

"Fire" is a song written by Bruce Springsteen and originally intended for use by Elvis Presley. It was first recorded by Robert Gordon in 1978, who received some modest album-oriented rock radio airplay with it. It was then recorded and released by The Pointer Sisters later in 1978, who gained a major hit from it, reaching number two in early 1979 on the U.S. pop chart. Although he performed the song live from his 1978 tour onwards, Springsteen himself did not release his own recording of the song until his 1986 Live/1975-85 album, which contains his (heavily edited, to eliminate on-stage hijinks) December 16, 1978 performance. Service at Great Notch restored

Little Falls NJ residents, particularly those who live in the Great Notch section of the Township, have won a hard fought battle with NJ Transit. Threats of closing the Great Notch Station and diverting all service to the Montclair State University station were met with resistance and protests by those residents who have come to depend on the convenience of the local train stop in their neighborhood. Service had already been severely cut back in preparation for the eventual closing of the station. But the voice of the people has been heard and not only has NJ Transit decided to keep the station open, but service has also been increased at Great Notch. This decision will be re-evaluated after a one year trail period to see if ridership increases and if the train stop remains a viable asset for NJ Transit.

Call for emergency response volunteers

The Passaic Valley Office of Emergency Management is looking for volunteers to become part of its emergency response team.

Members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) assist the Passaic Valley OEM - which serves Woodland Park, Little Falls and Totowa - during emergencies.

CERT volunteers must receive 20 hours of training, in which they learn how to respond during local emergencies.

Spring classes will be held April 27 through May 1 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Little Falls Civic Center on Warren Street. The classes are free, and open to anyone 18 or older.

It's official...Giants release Burress

The NY football Giants announced today that they have decided to release their troubled star wide receiver Plaxico Burress from the team. The star player, who caught the winning touchdown pass in last years Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots, has been in and out of trouble both on the field and off.

Now the Totowa NJ resident will have to search for a new team if he manages to clear the criminal charges against him stemming from last falls shooting incident (involving an unregistered gun) in a NYC nightclub.

Town Hall meeting with MSU

Amid growing concerns of Little Falls residents about over expansion of Montclair State University and the ever increasing burden that the state institution imposes on the township, Mayor Mike DeFrancisci has arranged to host a town hall style meeting with representatives of MSU. Expected to attend are Shivaun Gaines, MSU interim director of governmental relations, and Julie Adams, MSU director of alumni and community relations. The meeting will afford residents the opportunity to ask questions about a variety of university topics. According to the mayor subjects likely will include the university's future plans for expansion and possible property acquisitions.

The forgotten castle of Silk City

Lambert Castle sitting atop Garret Mountain in Paterson NJ and overlooking the former "Silk City" below is a site familiar to most who have lived in the area or who travel daily on Interstate Route 80. Members of the Passaic County NJ Historical Society hope that the recent decision by Congress to designate the Great Falls of Paterson a national historic park will help to bring renewed interest in Lambert Castle.

The castle which is made of brownstone, was built by area silk baron, Catholina Lambert in 1893. The Passaic County Historical Society offices and county archives are now housed at the location. The castle is open to the public Wednesday - Sunday afternoons from 1 -4 pm.

In 1791, Alexander Hamilton created the first planned industrial community of the US in Paterson. Hamilton believed that in order for America to survive, we needed to establish an industrial base, and he saw the waters of the Passaic River flowing through Paterson as the perfect power source. The first cotton mill was built in the city in 1794 and the silk mills followed soon thereafter.

Catholina Lambert, born March 28, 1834 in Yorkshire England, was the son of two mill hands. He jumped aboard a ship bound for Boston at the age of 17 and by his early 20's was a partner in a silk mill. At 23, he married into wealth and moved with his bride to NYC. With two partners he opened his own silk mill at Straight and Clay Streets in Paterson and the rest they say...is history. He amassed great wealth and built his castle dubbed "Belle Vista" in part to showcase his huge art collection. Lambert's fortunes crumbled later in life and he was forced to auction off most of his beloved art collection before his death in 1923.

Two years later, Passaic County bought the castle and grounds for a tidy sum of $125,000
