MONROE - At the end of this month, a 27-year snack bar reign at Smith's Clove Park officially ends.

That's when Monroe residents Harry and Maureen Carey's tenure as the park's snack bar operators concludes. Over that time, they sold tens of thousands of hot dogs and countless other goodies as football, basketball, baseball and roller hockey games and summer camp programs took place at the park for more than a quarter of a century.

A job which was intended to pay for their own children's college education lasted much longer than expected, said Maureen Carey, and turned into an opportunity for them to be grateful observers of the world of community sports and recreation in Monroe. The Careys watched thousands of small kids grow into adulthood, with those adults bringing their own children back to their place of youth to compete in those same sports. And just about everyone - at one time or another - wanted a snack.

It was an opportunity Carey said she and her husband were privileged to have, but it's now time to move on to new ventures.

"Watching the kids grow up was just the best," she said. "I was 35 when I started doing this and now I'm getting Social Security. It's time to move on."

In 1982, when Harry Carey retired from the City of New York Police Department, the Careys decided to take on the lease to be the park's sole snack concessionaire.

"Little did we know we'd still be here 27 years later, well after they were out of college," she said. "We had the exclusive rights for food sales. Our big items were Sabrett hot dogs, hamburgers and knishes."

There were also "sloshies," ice cream, soft drinks and candy, all the perfect items to eat as sporting games involving both kids and adults took place.

‘An understanding of money'

During summer camp, hundreds of kids would stop by daily for lunch and/or snacks with "the kids getting to eat whatever they wanted without their parents being around," said Carey. Lunch specials were set up, with counselors helping the younger kindergarten and first-grade children by collecting their money and placing orders so they were ready in time for lunch. The older kids ordered on their own.

"By second-grade, they had an understanding of money," she said. "They always knew how much they had and how much they could spend."

Back in 1982, kids could get Tootsie rolls for two cents each; this past fall the cheapest candy price was five cents for taffy. For many kids, making a snack bar purchase gave them an additional opportunity to practice their math skills.

"I guess we did help them learn math," said Carey with a laugh. "They knew exactly what they could get for a dime or a quarter. The kids knew what everything cost, tax included. And if the kids didn't have enough money...a nickel or a dime...it was no big deal. No one was turned away."

Neighbors and friends

But the ill effects of the economy have even trickled down to the snack bar, said Carey. In the past few years, she saw kids having less money to spend.

"It's understandable," Carey said. "Everyone has less money. It's more important to have food on your table than candy in your pocket."

Yet the one thing that hasn't changed is how the snack bar also gave kids and parents an opportunity to talk about what was going on in their lives and hang out together in a family-friendly environment.

"We were dealing with our neighbors and friends," she said. "We met so many nice people that we would have never met under normal circumstances. And the kids were just a lot of fun to be around, whether they were six or 13. They could always make you laugh or change your mood in just a few minutes."

Carey said her recollections of her snack bar tenure "blend into one nice memory, nothing sticks out." But she did recall a time when a man mistakenly thought the snack bar provided drive-through service. He pulled his car up, only to be told the snack bar was not a drive-through, with Carey pointing to the fence in front of his car. The man put his car in reverse and quickly left, scraping the entire side of his car along the railing as Carey watched in disbelief.

"His face was bright red," she said. "What did he think the fence in front of his car was for?"

Then, there was a man who thought the snack bar offered more than park fare, stepping up to order a hamburger, cooked medium rare, on whole wheat toast with Munster cheese, forcing Carey to tell him "we're a snack bar in the middle of a park, not a diner."

But the kids were always kids.

"Every day was different," said Carey. "Some days were good, some days were bad. You just go with the flow and enjoy the kids. If they were a little rambunctious today, they would be better the next day. All I can say is whoever gets this snack bar next is kid-friendly and that they can laugh at the kids."

And, what's her best observation of her 27 years at the snack bar helm?

"I've seen many kids grow up," said Carey. "They are just magnificent parents. They give back and are always there. When you see them with their own parents and their young ones, it's a nice feeling of community. It's been a good run."

Facebook fan club dedicated to the Smith's Clove Park snack bar

Harry and Maureen Carey's tenure as snack bar concessionaires at Smith's Clove Park in Monroe is even a part of the wildly popular social networking site, Facebook.

Since their children Matt Carey and Deidre Carey Kokakis became the administrators of the "just for fun" Smith's Clove Park Snack Bar Fan Club in August, 354 people have become members, with hundreds of postings. Here's a selection of thoughts from their "fans" who wanted to share memories and say goodbye to the Careys.

Chuck Hansen: When people talk about Monroe, they mention the airplane in one park, and the Carey's at the real park! Your commitment and love to Monroe is amazing! The community will miss you, there is no doubt about that. We can only strive to live by your example...

Bill Trimble: Ohhhh...THAT snack bar!! Mr. & Mrs. Carey - I know that I speak for many people when I say: A sincere "thank you" to both of you for looking out for us. God knows we needed it. You've touched a lot of people with your kindness.

Jim Aherne: To the Carey Family: it's a sad time for the community, exciting time for you but it's a time that brings back many smiles and many great memories of our childhood and time spent at the park. Thanks for the bandaids, ice packs and laughter. Thanks for asking me the score when I was in the middle of a game and thanks for always caring!!! Love ya!!!

Eric Harris: The dedication from the Carey family is truly unbelievable. You showed up to the park every single day, not because you were investing in a lucrative business or because you had nothing better to do, but because you all actually cared about every one of us kids over the past however many years. We just don't see that from people anymore, and tapping back into those memories is truly refreshing. A shy, introverted kid, I remember being comfortable in that snack bar. Thank you for that. You are genuinely some of the nicest people I'll ever know. This town is better because you are in it.

Bernice Gennaro: YAC and POP Warner will never be the same. Now I know why I haven't gotten my pass to Smith Clove Park all the people I would want to see are not going to be there. You guys take care and enjoy your retirement.

Caroline Latimer Sullivan: Wow...Smith Clove Park will never be the same. Maureen and Harry and the snack bar completed the Smith Clove Park picture. YAC stands for You All Care for Maureen and Harry because they certainly cared for all of you!

Sue Schudde Padgett: I will dearly miss the Carey Snack Bar. As long as I can remember, it was one of the family who patiently took my order as a teen, and now take my kid's order. They always treated us with respect, and helped us get every last pennies worth of our money spent!

Diane Piediscalzo White: You ARE Smith Clove Park for sure. My family will always remember your kindness, and don't forget all the pretzels and hot chocolate. You helped teach my children their self value by trusting them to ‘pay you tomorrow' and letting them see first hand they could trust and be trusted. Operation Christmas Child

Members of the Highland Mills United Methodist Church recently held an "Operation Christmas Child" party during which more than 150 shoeboxes were filled with school supplies, basic hygiene items, small toys, clothing and other everyday items. The shoeboxes will be shipped to children in need around the world through the "Samaritans Purse" organization. Monroe Village Board renames street in honor of Gregg Wenzel

Monroe - The Monroe Village Board recognized former Monroe resident and fallen CIA officer Gregg Wenzel this week by naming a street in his honor: Cheese Cock Drive was changed to Gregg Wenzel Drive.

In reading the proclamation, Mayor John Karl III said: "The Village of Monroe recognizes this truly great citizen by renaming a road in this community in his honor."

Wenzel, a 1987 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School was a CIA operative killed in Ethiopia in 2003. According to his father, Mitchell Wenzel, the circumstances surrounding his death were murky. Wenzel was not a U.S. State Department diplomat as has been claimed but he was a CIA spy killed in a car crash. He was a member of the first clandestine service training class to graduate after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In July 2003, Gregg Wenzel was driving with "a high-ranking Ethiopian official" when his car was hit head-on by an Ethiopian driver working for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and driving a UN vehicle. The Ethiopian official with Wenzel was also killed. The driver was convicted but it's not known if he served jail time.

"Gregg was a spy, on a clandestine mission gathering intelligence when he was killed," said Wenzel. "He basically was operating on the ‘dark side,' in the shadows. He had disguises and aliases. He jumped from planes. He learned the Ethiopian language and was studying Arabic Sometimes he would tell us, ‘I won't be in touch with you for days.' There were things he didn't want us to know for our own protection."

The Wenzels initially had difficulty with the CIA uncovering their son's name. They had a wrongful death claim against UNIDO and its insurer, AIG, who refused to settle. For the protection of other operatives working in the area and the pending wrongful death claim, the CIA refused to uncover Gregg's name. However, following a withdrawal of the claim and with the help of President George W. Bush's office, the CIA relented and uncovered Gregg Wenzel's name.

At a memorial service for fallen agents at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, Director Leon E. Panetta made his CIA affiliation public in June, 2009:

"At age 33, a promising young officer - a leader and friend to so many - was taken from us. We find some measure of solace in knowing that Gregg achieved what he set out to do: He lived for a purpose greater than himself. Like his 81st star on this wall, that lesson remains with us always" said Panetta.

A quote on the headquarters museum wall states: "We are the nation's first line of defense. We go where others cannot go, and accomplish what others cannot accomplish." Panetta commented, "They operate on the dark side, in the shadow." Wenzel said his son, Gregg, "was an individual who lived for something beyond himself."
