Another beautiful day in Paradise ..... that would be better known as "Southwest Florida"!! Went down to the Fort Myers Pier this afternoon / evening to catch the sunset and take some pictures. Beach was fairly crowded for a Monday, the temperature was around 80 degrees and we had a blue-bird sky.

Saturday night was the annual Bonita Boat Parade. In normal fashion we had numerous decorated boats floating down the Imperial River. The weather was quite nice ... roughly 76 degrees, a slight breeze and DARK!!!

the weather in Southwest Florida was quite pleasant today. We had blue bird skies, temperature was around 80 degrees, but it was quite windy. Went down to the naples pier a little before sunset to check out the view. Saw a guy skim boarding and WOW was he good at it.

Kristin's Christmas Crafts

Some of you may have seen the blog we posted almost two weeks ago about my sister Kristin and the crafts she makes and sells. I want to take this time to thank the many people who purchased some of Kristin's items and to those who "re-blogged" that initial post which brought more visibility to Kristin and holiday crafts.

I will say that Kristin was absolutely shocked at the responses we received, yet still has some items left for sale. We would really like to get the remainder of her inventory sold before the holidays. By getting these items sold it accomplishes two objectives.....

1. Kristin gets the thrill of knowing people like and want to buy her crafts.

2. She & mom don't have to package the items up and take them in the car back to Kentucky after the holidays.

Eighteen Inch Tall Christmas Trees
decorated with sea shells.

Kristin, with our mom's assistance, decorates these 18" Trees with shells that I collect off our beaches. All of shells were found on the beaches of Southwest Florida and were no longer the homes to any living animals .... (It is illegal to collect live shells here off the beaches). We make a point to have a large variety of species of shells on each tree and no two trees are alike.

Currently she has only 7 trees left to sell for this holiday season.

These trees sell for $35.00 plus shipping

Custom Made Pot Holders.

These potholders are 5" x 5" and are very thick. Excellent at keeping anyone from burning their fingers with hot pots, pans and cookie sheets.

Pyramids of Bonita Springs Florida

Hello Folks,

In the past 15+ years that I have either lived in Bonita Springs or been coming here for vacations, I've never known that Bonita was home to such large Pyramids. happened to stumble across a couple this past week while walking the beach.

Walking the beaches can be quite enjoyable ..... enjoying the gulf, sand and beautiful weather .... except for today.... was quite glummy with on-off rain .... but still a great morning at the beach. Kind of like the old saying (or a variation there of) A bad day walking the beach is better than a good day at work.....

Here are some pics from yesterday and today...

Picture to the right is of a Lightning Whelk moving his way along the beach in the surf. The blck tip at the end of his shell would be his nose. I came across a few of these.

The picture below is the very tip of a Lightning Whelk sticking out of the sand. Many times this is all you will see of these shells as they like to stay burried in the sand. What is sticking our may only be an inch worth of shell while 5 to 8 inches is burried down below.

Below is a Horseshoe crab. His shell is roughly the diameter of a salad plate. These can get quite large with the shells being as round as a dinner plate.

Christmas Crafts by Kristin

Some of you on AR may have seen my previous blogs about my sister Kristin. For those who have not, Kristin was born with Cerebral Palsy. Every day she wakes up and has to deal with her mental and physical disabilities, yet every day she is always happy and smiling. In many ways she has the mind of a child but in other ways she is just as bright as any other 39 year old lady. Kristin is also one of the funniest people I know. She is always coming off with some new saying or phrase. Her most recent one she is "Chow baby"..... instead of saying "good bye".

Kristin keeps herself busy doing a variety of crafts. She makes pot holders, shaws, and decorates Christmas Trees with shells which mom & I collect off our beaches. All of these items she sells to family and friends ..... Heck, even if I need a couple pot holders, I need to pay for them!!!! Kristin cuts NO slack, nor does she extend any credit.

To the right are a couple pictures of the Christmas Trees she decorates. These trees are roughly 19 inches tall and are extremely adorable. No animal were killed to make these trees as all the shells were "empty" when collected off the beach. (FYI ... it is illegal to keep or collect live shells off our beaches).

She really enjoys doing the crafts and gets a big excitement when something sells.

Hello Folks,

Took one of my weekly strolls down the beach the other day. Decided it was time to check out Vanderbilt Beach which is in Naples as I have not been on this stretch of beach lately. Was quite surprised at the vast number of birds on the beach. Must have been designated "Bird Day" at the beach because they were everywhere. Turned out that a very large school of bait fish had decided to park themselves on a long stretch of beach which was attracting the birds.

Monarch Butterflies and the Facts You Probably Didn't Know !!!!

This past weekend, while visiting the Naples Botanical Garden, we had the pleasure of experiencing the Butterfly Garden. The butterfly garden was an enclosed garden area to contain the butterflies and was quite fascinating. While admiring the butterflies, the question arose in our head "how long do butterflies live?". I had heard in the past about the migration of Monarchs from North America down to Mexico where they can be found in the millions covering tress.

Sooo, the life expectance question lead me to do a little research and here is what I learned....

• Monarch Butterflies can be found between the Canadian Border down into South America. They can also be found in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, India, Bermuda, Western Europe, Canary Islands, Central America, New Guinea, Ceylon, the Azores and a few additional places.

• Monarchs typically live for 2 months

• Monarchs are the only Butterfly which migrate North & South as birds do.

• When Monarchs Migrate , no single Monarch makes the whole journey. Typically it takes 4 generations to migrate in a single direction.

• Monarchs are poisonous to birds due to the caterpillar stage feeding on milkweed.

• Monarchs go through 4 life cycles ...

Naples Botanical Garden

This past weekend was the grand opening of the "New & Improved" Naples Botanical Garden. From the news reports they increased the size of the garden and added many new plantings..... regardless, since I had not been there previously, it was all new to me.

Now, keep in mind that Naples, Florida is known for being an extremely wealthy community where business executives come to retire. With that in mind, you will be surprised to know that the planting in the picture to the left was one of the more popular sites at the garden.

(Not what I was expecting.)

The Botanical Garden is an awesome place showing off many of the various exotic tropical plants located in South Florida, Central America and South America. They had a very interesting and fascinating butterfly garden with numerous butterflies fluttering around.

As an addition attraction, they had a lady dressed as a vine walking around on stilts. She looked very realistic, except for the "walking" part.

An extra special bonus for those who visited this past weekend was a FREE potted plant when you left. Made for a great gift for mom or that special someone, you just don't tell them it was FREE!!!!

Sandsculpting Contest on Fort Myers Beach, Florida....... 2009

Hello Folks,

Last week was the annual Fort Myers Beach Sandsculpting Contest. The contest started about midweek and ended with the final awards ceremony being on Sunday November 8^th at 1:00pm. In normal fashion, I just HAD to go down and check out the artwork.

Upon arriving I was informed that ‘things had changed" in regards to the contest and public participation / viewing ..... This year the "powers to be" put up a barrier around the sand sculpting area and if you wanted into "the area" you would have to pay a fee. In the past this has always been a FREE event to view. Fortunately the boundaries which allowed for FREE viewing were not very far away and if you had a camera which would ZOOM, then you would have pictures just like you were standing next to the sculpture. ...... provided you arrived early enough to beat the crowd.

Below are some pictures of the sand sculpting artwork, I will also add that I believe last year's sculptures were a bit nicer, but everyone has their own opinion and who am I to complain ..... I couldn't come close to the quality of artwork these people produce. Heck my "castles" would be composed of sand being packed into a small bucket and then flipped upside down to create my masterpiece.
