Trevor Tails…. Story of a Pac-Man Frog

For my birthday this year, my hubby got me a big fat Pac-Man frog. It was so much fun to tell one of my dearest pals on the phone because she said, "A what? Huh? Oh, like a little porcelain figurine?" It seemed everyone I spoke to just did not understand exactly what a "frog" was. (0:

After much debate, he was named Trevor (after the toad on Harry Potter) and in the week I have had him, he has already doubled in size! It seems pac-man frogs are only made of 2 parts- a mouth and stomach. I swear if you stare at him long enough you can see him get fatter. In fact, they get their name from the arcade game because all they do is chomp-chomp-chomp...

I will keep you up on all his many antics! The first one is, again, courtesy of my dear hubby... I was telling him I needed to change out the "fake dirt" every week and he said, "I thought you only had to change reptile soil once every 2 or 3 weeks." I said that may be true, but, frogs were amphibians, not reptiles. Scott then looked at me, completely straight faced and said, "Well, whatever you have to do to keep him healthy... we wouldn't want him to have A-REPTILE DYSFUNCTION". Ha ha ha!!!! Go ahead, say it out loud again... it really is pretty cute!

Any other frog lovers out there? Any advice?

Kidnapped… From Slavery to Sainthood. The Real Story of St. Patrick

Towards the end of the Roman Empire, a 16 year old boy was kidnapped and forced into slavery just outside the border of what was considered the "civilized world".

The young man had never been particularly religious; however, he was kept and worked under the worst of conditions. So, in desperation, he began to pray to God every day that he might survive the ordeal and one day escape to freedom. After more than 5 years as a slave, he managed to escape. After walking 200 miles, he made it to a coast where he found a ship that carried him away.

Upon returning home, to what is now England, his parents were delighted to see him and begged him to never leave them again. However, young Patricius began to hear voices that told him he must bring Christ to the land of savages where he was enslaved. So, he set off to do just that.

That is how a young British boy grew up to be the patron Saint of Ireland... Saint Patrick. Not by driving the snakes out of Ireland, but, by converting the idol-worshiping druids and nearly the entire population of Ireland, to Christianity.

Iditarod Starts Today!

One of the most unusual, and original, extreme sports, "The Iditarod Dog Sled Race" begins in Alaska today. This race will take the 62 teams over 1,150 miles of some of the roughest and yet most beautiful terrain in the world.

Beginning in Anchorage (South Central Alaska) the sleds will travel in below freezing temperatures to Nome (Western Bering Sea Coast). Between 12-16 dogs and their musher will travel this extreme terrain (dense forest, frozen tundra and rivers, and across mountain ranges) in 10-17 days.

The race commemorates a life-saving journey in 1925 when Nome was stricken with a diphtheria epidemic that was killing their town. Heroes were made when this journey started to bring the serum back that would save this town. Without those mushers and their loyal, hard-working pack, many more lives would have been lost.

I admire their dedication and am envious of the view! Photos are by Jeff Schultz a premier photographer in Alaska.

Well, after a lot of gentle prodding from my friends, I have come back to my blog after a long break. I am sure everyone can understand that life just got a little crazy! Funny how it seems to do that! I am still with D.R. Horton, however, I have been moved to new communities 3 times (which that in itself is a little overwhelming) and I have started my own web-site for my arts, crafts and gifts. My partner's daughter is just about the most precious child I have ever seen.

She is beautiful, charismatic, and says the cutest stuff ever.

Her first day of kindergarten was this week and she told her daddy... "Kiss my hands all over. That way when I am missing you, I can kiss my hands and it will be like I am kissing you." It should be illegal to be that cute!

Then, as she told me of her first day of kindergarten, she said, "Ms. Sara, can I ask you a question?" I said of course and she asked, "Are you a teenager?" I simply responded, "That is why I love you so much!" Can you blame me?

INNOCENCE IS PRICELESS

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, 'Good morning Alex.'

'Good morning Pastor,' he replied, still focused on the plaque. 'Pastor, what is this?'

The pastor said, 'Well son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.'

For a time, soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.

Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, 'Which service, the 8:30 or the 10:45?'

One Wise Teacher (Tribute to Our Troops)

I am proud of the company I work for... however, nothing has made my chest swell more with pride than an e-mail sent by our President and CEO, Don Tomnitz. This one is FANTASTIC. It read as follows:

ONE WISE TEACHER

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a Social Studies teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten.

On the first day of school, with the permission of the school
superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

Looking around, confused, they asked, 'Ms. Cothren, where're our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk.'They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.' 'No,' she said. 'Maybe it's our behavior.' She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period, still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk less classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now
I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it.
Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall.

By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

This is a true story....

This plant will "tolerate" full shade (like in the indirect lights of your office or in a dark corner of your yard) but it thrives in FULL Texas sun! I told you it was easy (0:

What makes it a great landscape plant in our extreme environment is its unique ability to survive both drought and flood. So, the pounding Texas rain followed by nothing will suit this little plant just fine.

It is tough, fast growing (can be aggressive), and can be cultivated year round. I can't mail this one but I can give you cuttings if you come by to see me. All you do is bury the cuttings with a leaf or 2 popping out and you will have beautiful plants in no time. They die back at frost but come back just as beautiful every year. Would you like some? Learning a New Language

Okay kids, I did it. I purchased the "Rosetta Stone" for learning Spanish. I am going to need you guys to keep me honest though. I know simply buying the (very expensive) program will not make me fluent. I have to practice! Grr! Anyone have any advice on learning a new language? Advice on Rosetta Stone?

I do volunteer work every year in Latin America (normally Costa Rica) and it has been an increasing battle to communicate not knowing the language. I wish I was one of these people that just "picked it up" but my last trip was 3 weeks long and nothing! I was still playing charades instead of using language. Sigh. Oh well.

So, if you have advice, I am all ears!

Miserable Reminder

I hate to even talk about this Texas heat because it makes it all too real. Triple digit heat has plagued us for quite awhile now. This may easily be the hottest year on record for quite some time. I heard something today though that made me feel I had to write.

In this heat it is imperative we remember how much hotter it is in a vehicle. Another horrible story was covered on my local news about a family in Aubrey, TX (not far from McKinney) who mom thought dad had removed the baby from the car and dad thought mom had... the baby was in the car under an hour and, sadly, was found deceased.

You see, if it is 100 degrees outside, within 15 minutes, a closed up car will reaching a scorching 140 degrees! Today DFW saw 105 degrees. Another miserable reminder that pets and children should NEVER be left in a car. NEVER.

Put children and pets first. Always look before locking.

God be with this poor family. Their grief must be overwhelming.

Okay, let me start by saying that I am not a horticulturist. I like to "play one on TV", but, I am self taught in both my successes and failures. That is precisely why I can say a plant is easy to grow. If I can do it, so can you!

Why do I say they are free? DUH! Because I have grown more than I can use and will be happy to share (0: This series is all about plants I am happy to give to whoever wants to grow these lovely beauties. So, if you live or work in Plano, McKinney, Allen, or Frisco, stop on by and I'll give you some (just shoot me an e-mail so I bring them to work with me). If you live too far away to pop in, send me a self addressed, stamped envelope with what you want and if it is mail-able, I will send you some. That simple! Share the love and help make this planet even more beautiful than it already is!

My first featured freebie is an heirloom plant called a Four O'clock. The reason for this unusual name is that the very fragrant flowers open each evening (around 4), stay open all night, and close in the morning. They smell super sweet and once established can be smelled from 10 feet away.

These flowers can grow in full Texas sun and mostly shade but somewhere in between is preferred. I have seeds from magenta, orange, yellow, and coral colored "mother plant" but I can't necessarily guarantee the color of your flowers.

These plants are drought tolerant, come back every year, and grow thick tubers deep under ground over time. They are hardy and beautiful. Only 1 down-side exists to them... they are aggressive. Which, if your thumb isn't green, this could be a good thing! So, don't plant them where they have the opportunity to choke out other plants because, trust me, they will!

Yuck. Did you know that Texas leads the nation in boating accidents so far this year? That is quite embarrassing considering we only have one natural lake in the whole state! Ouch! We have to change this.

Here are some statistics compiled by the US Coast Guard:

710 fatalities - 3,474 injuries - nearly $44 million in property damage due to boating accidents.
90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing life jackets.
Alcohol was the leading contributing factor in approximately one-fifth of all boating fatalities.
About 70 percent of all boating fatalities occurred on boats where the operator had not received boating safety instruction.

1. ALWAYS wear a life vest! Come on folks, which is more important, looking cool in your bathing suit or being alive?!?

3. Take a boating safety course. You took driver's ed, right?

The Richest Man in Babylon, A BOOK REVIEW

The Richest Man in Babylon was written by George S. Clason and first published in 1926. It is a classic when it comes to investment principles and few books can withstand the test of time on such a complicated subject. If you have not read this book, I suggest you run right out and get it right now... don't worry, I'll wait...

Did you buy it? Well, read it! Clason uses ancient Babylon to make the lessons of how to build wealth simple. His primary principle is to "always remember that a portion of all you earn is yours to keep." In its simplest terms, save the first 10% you earn for your future. Hey, I said the principle was simple, not easy!!

Here are a few other important lessons he hits on:

Have a financial plan
Study and learn... how determined are you to succeed?
Seek professional advice from competent sources on investing. Learn from mistakes.
Carefully consider where to invest profits, but, do reinvest them.
Learn to make your treasure work for you.

Admittedly, at times this book can drag. However, what finance book doesn't?!? I would consider this a "MUST READ" for everyone. Buy it for a recent graduate or for anyone who may want to retire one day. They will thank you for it later!

A loss of interest in conflict...

Conflict is something you no longer want to be a part of... it is just not where you want to be or go. The only way this works is, you do not even let the other person know you are passing on the conflict. Try picking a fight with someone who just is not interested. Eventually the person picking the fight will go somewhere else.

Is this easy? No one ever said it was... least of all me! However, criticisms are like homing pigeons, they always return home eventually! You see, wrong-doers must justify themselves. Therefore, participating in the conflict only deepens everyone's resolve to "prove their point." It is self preservation that stops someone from blaming themselves. Instead, they look to condemn others. When you participate in conflict, you add fuel to the fire.

I'm not suggesting we should all be pacifists and never fight to make a difference. I am simply suggesting that the majority of conflict we face in every day like is not only unnecessary but unproductive and perhaps destructive as well. Is there someone in your life you hope to change? Of course there is! However, ask the deeper question, am I so right that I am above change myself? Psychology proves that people respond better to praise than punishment. Don't participate in unnecessary conflict. The way to get honey rarely involves kicking over the bee hive!

SIDS Research Shows Promising Results

SIDS is an acronym for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is the sudden death on an infant (under 1 year of age) whose death can not be explained by case investigation. The typical scene involves a care-taker going in to check on the quietly sleeping infant only to find them unresponsive and not breathing. It is a horrible situation for all involved in the sense that the parents are never given a true reason for the death making it difficult to grieve for the significant loss they suffered. I, myself, was a nanny for a family who had the misfortune of a SIDS death and I am not sure any of us were the same afterwards. I can only thank God I was not the one who was responsible for Alex at the time of his passing.

Needless-to-say, that after such a defining moment in my life, I have always watched for research on this terrible syndrome. World wide, 1 child in every 2,000 born will succumb to SIDS making it a threat for all of us.

Research, until recently, had not been promising. However, in Monterotondo, Italy, some interesting results came from a study on mice. Baby mice engineered to have defective serotonin regulation unexpectedly died with what looked much like sudden infant death syndrome. To read the research study, click here. I can only hope and pray that this new study will shed some light on this subject and perhaps start us on a way to cure.

Thank you to everyone who had me in their thoughts and prayers. I am short 4 wisdom teeth now and looking forward to healing quickly. I know I have lots of comments I need to catch up on and reply to as well as getting busy on my blog. So, plan on several posts coming out in the next few days!

Please be patient with me. I appreciate everyone's comments and I will reply to you. It just may take me a little while to get caught up.

Husbands Say the Darndest Things (A TRUE Funny Story)

I must preface this story by explaining that my hubby is of genius mentality... he was a Realtor, a broker, a math teacher, a builder, can solve the Rubik's cube, and play any song he hears on guitar without the sheet music. Understand, that it is for all of these reasons this story becomes even funnier...

As I did my normal morning routine (which is drink coffee, shower, watch the news while applying make-up) an absolutely adorable story came on about a big, tough, 120 pound rottweiler adopting a "baby" lamb. I, giggle, and say with some sarcasm to my husband, "As opposed to an adult lamb, I suppose?" I adore my morning newscasters but the woman has been known to be a bit of a ditz.

My darling hubby looks at me slightly puzzled and I add, "Seeing how a lamb is a baby sheep." He looks back at the TV, then at me, and then asks, "It looks like a goat. What's the difference between a lamb and a goat?" As soon as the question left his lips he knew it was a mistake. Hard as I tried, my face began to crumble. Fight as I might, my eyes tearing up, I could not stop the giggles. I am from nowhere Oklahoma. He is from California. Guess they don't have FFA there (0;

As I try to suppress the giggles, I explain, "A baby goat is a kid. A baby sheep is a lamb. It is the same as the difference between a kitten and a dog." His face hardens. I playfully ask, "Do you know the difference between a kitten and a dog?" He then answers, "Do you know the difference between a love pat and a spanking?"

If this was the end of the story, you got your money's worth. But it's not! I continue getting ready with an occasional giggle followed by a stern look from him. Some time goes by before he saunters into the room, clearly pleased with himself. He looks at me and matter of factly asks, "If an adult lamb is a sheep... what is a ewe... E-W-E?" As if to say, "AH-HA" to me. I am back to laughing until I cry. I explain a "ewe" is a female adult sheep just like a ram is an adult male sheep. He is brutally aware of the comedy in these interactions and even laughs at himself a little. He admits, "I didn't realize sheep came in black and brown. That is why I thought it looked like a goat." I admit, it was shaved and had no wool. So, I could see his point. However, not wanting to end the fun, I retorted...

"Ba Ba black sheep have you any wool?"

To which he cleverly replied...

"Spankings, spankings, a whole bag full"

Husbands say the darndest things!

A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others...

You have acquired true inner peace when you no longer feel the need to explain away behavior of other people. Dr. Wayne Dwyer has a pillow that reads, "I'm allowed." Finding inner peace means recognizing you are not responsible for others actions and you have a sense of acceptance when it comes to others. The hard part? That the acceptance exists even when you disagree. You are allowed to be who you are... as are they. There is no need to make someone else's actions fit into your accepted beliefs. Only they are responsible for the decisions they make. Only you are responsible for the decisions you make.

Am I there yet? Not quite. But I continue to try.
