Manitou Art Center is a Great Place to Create Holiday Gifts

I was talking the other day with a friend of mine who is in the title & escrow business and she was telling me that the Manitou Art Center is a fantastic place to take the kids to make holiday gifts using glass or pottery.

I did a bit of research and I thought I would share it here.

The art center offers glass fusing classes in November and Decenber. You can see the full schedule of glass classes by following this link. You can learn to make all sorts of items Holiday Ornanaments, Trays, Coasters, Dishes etc. Just take a look and you will see that the classes are affordable and you get to take the project home with you!

The ceramics studio is available for rental. Need a holiday party with a different twist? How about having your friends gather and create ceramics to take away as their own holiday gift. Think outside the box this holiday season and share the holidays with your friends and family creating memories and artwork.

When listening to local radio station KMTT this song was getting a lot of airplay a year or so ago. I always found myself tappin' the toes along to it. (Believe me you don't want to see me dance) Micahel Franti is coming back to Seattle in 2010 and I am thinking that tickets might just be in order.

Most potential home buyers come to us thinking that they will have to suffer, scrimp, and save every penny to save for their down payment. Today we are going to look at an option to save money each and every month without having to suffer or scrimp. You will save but believe me you will not suffer.

Jim Hunger is both a friend and a client of ours. Jim is a single dad who shares custody of his son Henry. Jim feeds his family on a budget of $200.00 a month. That’s right $200 a month! There is no scrimping, no suffering to eat fantastically on $200 a month if you follow Jim’s lead! Now having a “tween” for a son makes meal planning a challenge. Or does it? The whole point of Jim’s food budget is to eat well for less money than we think possible.Even if feeding the kids.

I have been following Jim’s blog Musings on the Path to Frugality for quite some time. I know it has helped our household cut our food budget by quite a bit. I’m not the record keeper that Jim is but I know that my food bill is at least 30% lower and I feed two teenagers every day!

I think that anyone that reads this blog will increase their enjoyment of food and their savings account! Jim was able to save the money for the down payment of his home in part because of the money he was able to save by spending less on food each month. It was not the only way he saved the money for the down payment but he says it was the most enjoyable way. When trying to save the money to buy a house there are many things you can do to save money.

We are going to start a series of posts here on Monday’s using one of Jim’s recipes. Nobody said you have to suffer to buy a home! We will also share other creative ways to save money for your down payment or really for anything you want to save money for! I graduated high school in 1980 so my growing up years were in the 80's I loved the music of that time. I'm not sure why. It's not like the music was any better or worse than music of any other decade. Whenever I hear one of my old favorites it always triggers memories.

Today's video is for a song that I really enjoyed when I was in college even though most of my friends thought I was crazy. Funny those same friends still think the same things =)

Tacoma's Wright Park a Photo a Day Project. Seymour Conservatory

I am lucky to live next to Wright Park in Tacoma. A beautiful 27 acre park in the middle of the city. One of the things I have noticed is that I was not taking advantage of the park both as a great place to walk and get some exercise and as a place of beauty. Seems I take for granted things around me if I am not careful.

I started this project the first of October with the stated goal of taking a photo a day of the Seymour Conservatory. Now, I cannot be there at the same time everyday so the photos will have diferences because of the time of day but that should not matter too much. Also, I am taking the photos from the same spot but I am not using a tripod or anything else so the photos will be a bit different daily too.

What is exciting is that while walking around Wright Park to get to the conservatory I have been saying hello to a lot of people and I am finding that there are some really friendly people here in Tacoma!

Everyone are you taking for granted some wonderful treasure in your community? Perhaps you need to get out more and smell the coffee of your community! I know I've been enjoying the fruits of my efforts.

Bellevue REBarCamp Was a Success

Since I have posted less than favorable comments about a past REBarCamp I feel it is only fair that I take a moment and share that I feel the Bellevue REBarCamp was a success.

This was a true grassroots event where the people that are having success with a partiuclar subject shared with those that were hungry to learn more about the subject. The half day format seemed to work well. We were able to have 12 sessions of 50 minutes each and I feel we covered the majority of the topics that people wanted to learn about.

Twitter and Facebook were two of the most common requests for classes. There was a session on Active Rain as well. Video, Online Profiles, Wordpress, and a general Q & A were also covered.

Many thanks to everyone who worked hard to make the event a success and many thanks to everyone who attended. I am looking forward to the next REBarCamp in the greater Puget Sound area.

Vendor Review A Bell Excavating Inc. Puyallup, WA

I have been working with a buyer on a bank owned property in Puyallup for the past few weeks. We are in the part of the buying process where the septic system needs to be inspected, pumped, and verified that is working correctly. The seller of the property had the opportunity to select the vendor to conduct the O & M certification. They selected A Bell Excavating. I am certainly glad that they did. Working with Greg Apple was a very pleasant experience.

We had a couple of challenges that were quickly determined and alternative resolutions suggested and implemented. One of the tanks for the septic system was located under the sidewalk next to the home. Greg called and was clear on what our options were allowing us to make a decision that made sense in our situation. The tanks also needed risers installed to eliminate the need to dig down 2 feet in the soil to expose the tank openings.(the next time service was needed) The quote given for the risers was very fair. There was no pressure the facts were presented and whatever my clients decision was the company was happy to do as requested. The work was completed quickly, clean up was great and my buyer is now a very happy person. She commented that the area was cleaned up and looked great. The sidewalk removal was minimal and the area will soon have grass growing and we will never know they were there.

RE BarCamps Growing Pains or Lost in the Woods?

I attended the Seattle RE BarCamp earlier this week and while it was organized well attended it seemed to be lacking something.

The something it seemed to be lacking was the free sharing of ideas in both directions. What I attended felt more like a tradeshow and less like the grassroots events that RE BarCamps have been in the past. When I attended the Seattle RE BarCamp in February of this year. (Wow, does that seem like forever!) it was this highly energized grassroots event where people were forming little groups and talking about something very specific and then moving along to another conversation. There were presentations and they were good but the energy was about the common man (agent) taking charge of their business via Web 2.0 and seeing results from their efforts.

This past weeks event was held in a large building that made conversation difficult due to the accoustics. It was a great building with a fantastic location but it might not of been the right building for this type of event. The topics seemed watered down and from the top down too. It was like listening to a vendor sell their service or product it was not like sharing of ideas.

Have other RE BarCamps experienced the same transformation? Such a beautiful idea that I really do not want to see become just another tradeshow. In this industry we have enough tradeshows. We need more opportunities to get together and talk about what is working and what is not working. Without it being sponsored by someone. I realize that without sponsorships the events would not happen. Perhaps we can figure out a way to have the sponsors help finance but without having booths at the events? The Tee shirts were great. My son wears mine from the 1st. Seattle camp all the time. (it's a bit small for me) He is always asked who is that? and someone is pointing at a name on the shirt. It's been a conversation starter many times. How about selling sponsorships buying Tee Shirts and providing a website that the vendors can link to? That way they could offer their sales pitch and we could choose to visit. That way we can concentrate on what makes RE BarCamps such a wonderful event.

The freeflowing sharing of ideas by those that want to teach for those that want to learn.

A great experience with Top Hat Chimney Sweeps of Kirkland, WA

I've been trying to get a short sale to close for a few weeks now. Things have been going along like most short sales. In otherwords it's been a trying experience. We have had a lot of little things to take care of and it seems like everywhere we look there is another little challenge. Finally we are down to the last item the appraiser asks for. We need an inspection of the fireplace insert. Have you ever tried to find a fireplace vendor with little or no notice? After making several calls we were told to call Bill at Top Hat Chimney Sweeps. Bill promptly returned my voice mail and agreed to fit us into his schedule the next day.

We were scheduled to meet at 1:30 and I was there early to catch up on a few phone calls while not having to use my bluetooth. The chimney sweeps show up early. Early, folks when was the last time a vendor was early? We promptly take a look at the situation and it was not good, not good at all. Suggestions were made. I thought Police tape would be the best solution but that was voted down. We ended up removing the insert and decommissioning the insert on the spot. We were only scheduled for a inspection and they made the work happen on the spot! Fast, friendly and affordable.
