I'm a Residential Real Estate Agent in Grand Rapids Michigan along with my husband and in this current market things have been very challenging. I love my work and helping people with some of the most important decisions of their lives. But this past year has been heartbreaking to watch families loose the very thing that they have worked so hard for... Their home.

With all of the turmoil that plagues our nation right now with the economy, national debt, oil prices and the mortgage issues, I have to say that I have not been really excited about either party until last night. I have been a Republican all of me life and last night when Sarah Palin spoke at the RNC it confirmed for me that I still am a Republican. Sarah is a girl after my heart! I loved her and for the first time in this campaign I am so excited to be not just a Republican but to be a Republican American that is a Woman!

Being from the great State of Michigan I have been subjected to the liberal feminist movement for quite some time. (You know that we have the Dem. Gov. Jennifer Granholm) Needless to say, I loved the sound bite that was played this morning on FOX when Rudy called it like it is. Where have the feminist been for the past five days? Oh that's right their not really feminist their just liberals!

Let me know your thoughts.

Marketing: You can't live with it and You can't live without it!

As Steve and I were talking tonight about our personal marketing. We both really feel like we need to put a little more effort into it. Not that we haven't in the past, it's just that we tend to get away from it so easily.

Here is the reason that I think that it is so easy to get side tracked. When we start of doing personal marketing, and then it pays off and we get really busy, it tends to go on the back burner. Mainly because of time restraints.

We know what the answer to this dilemma is. It is to actually hire a person that markets us full time. And it only makes sense to do it. After all we did not get into this business to set up e-mail and postcard campaigns. We did not want to become web site experts, we don't want to keep track of and maintain a data base. But we know that it needs to be done.

I know that many of you AR agents out there were in our position at one time. We are pretty successful but at the same time we know that if we were not spending our time doing these things we could be doing the things that really make the money. We have hired an assistant to help with data entry and some website things but that does not seem to be enough.

So here are my questions!

What did you do when you were at this place in your business?

Did you hire someone full time or part time?

How did you compensate them?

What responsibilities did you give to them?

Were they primarily responsible for your personal marketing only or did general marketing of homes such as advertising, maintaining your personal web site and entering data into other real estate web sites something that they were responsible for also?

Any advice that you have would be much appreciated!

Spring is just around the corner!

I really dislike this time of year in Michigan. It's too cold outside to do anything. The snow by this time of year is just sickening to look at (not like the first snowfall that is so pretty). The snow banks are so high that you have a hard time seeing when backing out of your driveway. And when it does start to melt it all turns black and yucky looking by the roads.

But the good thing is that spring is just around the corner. That is my favorite time of year! Everything is fresh and new. The birds are singing and the flowers are blooming. And the pictures on all of our listings look awesome! I can't wait to go take new spring pictures of our listings. They are the best because there is just enough green on the budding trees but not so many leaves that you can not even see the house. And the sky in the spring is the most beautiful color of blue.

Everyone likes to say that it is a great time to buy because of the great prices and the low interest rates. but what I would like to suggest is that it is a great time to buy because the sellers are thinking that their home will never sell in this market not to mention the awful weather on top of it. So when a buyer does make an offer the seller may be more prone to accept it just because they are so depressed about everything because of the weather.

Likewise when the weather does get better the sellers are more willing to hold out for a better price just because it is nicer out and everything shows better. I have seen it happen both ways and if I were a buyer this would be the time of year that I would shop for a new home.

Now for all of the agents that live where it is beautiful all year long. I am completely jealous. Someday when my kids are grown I will be heading south. In the meantime I will say that the change of season here in Michigan can create some great marketing opportunities. And don't forget that right now it is a great time to buy!

She is eating her Kentucky Fried Chicken right now! Only 4 hours later. Yeah - I Won!

Does the punishment fit the crime?

Today has been an interesting day. After Church we did not have much time before my oldest Daughter (she is 13) had to be back up to Church for rehearsal. (She plays electric guitar and leads worship in the youth band) So we decided to get a quick lunch instead of trying to make something at home or go to a sit down restaurant. So off to Good Old Kentucky Fried Chicken. The only problem was that my younger Daughter decided that she was going to have an attitude about that restaurant because she wanted to go to Cracker Barrel for which we did not have time.

Anyway we are standing in line placing our order and she decides that she is going to play the silent game an not tell the poor girl standing behind the counter what she wants to eat. So because there is a huge line of people behind us I order for her. (by the way it is the same thing that I know she has ordered before)

We all sit down to eat and she still is playing her little game and she sits there the entire time and does not eat her food. So like good parents we get a to go box and bring it home. On the way we informed her that she can go with out eating right now if she wants but when she does decide that she is hungry... You guessed it she is eating the meal from Kentucy Fried Chicken. I don't care if she waits until tomorrow morning that is what she will have for breakfast!

Right now she is laying in her bed felling sorry for herself and probably trying to figure out how to get out of this one. And all of this just because she made the choice to act like a 3 year old instead of her age which is 12.

Anyway, I'm sure that many of you have had these situations before. I always like to hear creative punishments that fit the crime. So If you have any good stories please share.
