Scenic Route to Grand Canyon's South Rim

We recently had family visit from Vermont. Boy did we have fun and we even took a jaunt up to the Grand Canyon's South Rim.

We had a blast so I thought I would make a Google Map of our route. It was absolutely beautiful.

I would say that this is one of my favorite routes to take visitors to really see the diversity of our fine state.

It was fun being tour guides, again. I never get tired of going to the Grand Canyon either. Heck, we got married there, any questions?

Having a Ball at Sun City Grand

My family just left after 10 days of playing in Sun City Grand. Having never been here, they really enjoyed our community. As a matter of fact they really weren’t ready to go. Eventually we must all get back to reality. Let me tell you, the reality here in Sun City Grand is pretty darn good.

We golfed on all courses except Desert Springs, we spent a morning at the Cimarron Day Spa being pampered, we hung out at the Cimarron Center Pool & had lunch, we ate lunch at Dillon’s, we walked the trails, we worked out at the Cimarrron fitness area, we ate dinner at JB’s, we toured the Palm Center, we toured the Sonoran Plaza, we toured the Chaparral Center, we walked the grounds and took Oso to the Pet Park. I even took in a golf lesson.

We really “did” Sun City Grand with our family. The matter of the fact is that there is so much more to do here than we did. Consider all of the clubs and other sports and activities that one can take advantage of. Life can be pretty darn enjoyable here in Sun City Grand, maybe a little tiring too. What a way to spend your life.

The thing that we noticed most was the friendly staff and the fact that everyone was smiling and having a good time. We met people from Canada, Washington State and Minnesota to name a few. I can’t say enough about the overall feel of Sun City Grand, it really is a fabulous place to play, socialize and live life to it's fullest.

When it comes to living in Sun City Grand, there are so many floor plans and price ranges to choose from. There are single family homes and condominiums for resale in Sun City Grand. The condominiums currently for sale range in price from $103,000-$162,000. Single family homes currently for sale range in price from $165,000-$599,900. Golf course homes in Sun City Grand range in price from $349,000-$890,000.

The Colonnade at Sun City Grand is a gated LifeCare community with several levels of care to choose from. This Arizona retirement living community offers many services while providing membership to the Sun City Grand Recreational facilities. The Colonnade is one of several Arizona Roskamp Sun Health LifeCare communities. Residents don’t own real property in this community.

Sun City Grand October 2009 Market Report

There were 31 single family homes that sold in Sun City Grand for the month of October 2009. 3 of these homes were on the golf course.

The average sales price for a single family home NOT on the golf course for the month of October 2009 was $244,918. The average square footage was 1,669 and the sold price per square foot was $140.04.

The average sales price for a single family home on the golf course for the month of October 2009 was $570,000. The average square footage was 2,569 and the sold price per square foot was $221.75. A golf course home was on the market an average of 147 days. Keep in mind there were only 3 homes that impacted these monthly averages.

2 condominiums sold at La Solana. The average sales price for a condominium was $106,900 for the month of October 2009. The average square footage was 830 and the sold price per square foot was $124.61. A condominium was on the market an average of 148 days.

There were a total of 2 short sale homes that closed escrow and 3 lender owned homes closed escrow for the month of October 2009.

Overall, sales for the month of October in Sun City Grand were up compared to October 2008. The sales for October 2009 doubled compared to October 2008. However, the median sales price is down YTD by 13%.

Keep in mind that the city of Phoenix alone has a YTD median sales price decrease of 37.5%.

I thought since it was a beautiful day and the temps have cooled that I would take Oso to the Sun City Grand Dog Park. Off we went, in the car again and Oso has no idea where he’s going. Could it be the groomer again, or, oh no not the vet! Nope, not this time.

Wait, first things first, we need to register Oso at Sun City Grand's Activities office. Wow this is official business, Oso is going to feel pretty special (like he doesn't already). We took our rabies certificate along with our completed registration form to the Activities office. Once registered you will get a tag for your pet to wear.

What a great place, Del Webb really thought of it all. A pet park for our furry little family members, this is fantastic. Not only is it a great place to let Oso run around, but it's a great place to meet other residents and pet owners alike.

The pet park is so beautiful. It's located in the Village Center over by the tennis courts and Dillon's Restaurant. There are benches and a shade covering and it is lush and beautiful. To the north of the Dog Park there is a lake and Desert Springs Golf Course. There are also walking paths throughout this area. It's a great place to come and hang out while your pet runs about and does his/her socializing & business.

Please note: The Pet Park is closed every Monday for maintenance from morning until Noon.

A Little About Oso

Okay, Oso is “Oso-cute” indeed he is, just ask him. Well, just ask me. No, just look at his picture. Oso will pose for any picture, sit anywhere and grin and bear it. I happen to be his biggest fan. Look at his picture, can you blame me, I think not.

Oso was born on September 21, 2002 which makes him 7 years old. He weighs 8 pounds and doesn't have the traditional pomeranian cut. He actually has an even all around cut that is short and easy to manage. His grooming happens once a month and that's it. Believe it or not, he doesn't shed, which is fantastic.

Not only is he cute, he’s cuddly and likes to play with his toys, go for walks and beg for food too. Oso also enjoys going for hikes in his backpack. His favorite place to hang out is at the Grand Canyon where all the visitors from near and far take pictures of him.

The Grass is Always Greener at Sun City Grand

Ah, the fall in Arizona. It’s time for cooler mornings, evenings and even daytime highs start to dip. The geese are back (saw a large family of them yesterday on the golf course) and well; things are going to get rolling again. The summer heat, we hope has gone.

You’ll start to see more people out riding bikes, walking, hiking, running, driving around with the top down. It’s time to get outside again.

With all of that in mind, what in the world has happened to the golf courses? During the heat of the summer they were greener than green. Now all of a sudden it cools down and the grass isn’t that green anymore.

It’s that time of the year when the Bermuda grass goes dormant. This is just the way it goes this time of the year all throughout the Valley of the Sun. Don’t worry though the courses will be in tip top shape in which we’ve all become accustomed to. We sure do live in a wonderful community where the amenities are top notch and the staff really cares.

Did you know that, Bermuda grass is the base grass 12 months of the year at Sun City Grand (even though it goes dormant)? Newer grass which is Rye is then applied as it handles cooler temperatures better.

Knowledgeable & Consistent Quality Customer Service-Have You Seen It Lately?

May I say that I am certainly hoping the glass is at least half full when it comes to customer service. I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to customer service. It could be the person behind the counter at the gas station or at the front desk. We all want to feel like our needs are being taken care of and that we are at least in that moment a priority.

Do you have a recent situation that you received outstanding customer service? Do you remember how it made you feel? Did you tell someone else about it, maybe the person that provided it?

I have to admit I was a bit frustrated with the level of service I had been receiving. I felt as though I was an inconvenience at times to the person that was helping me. No, I’m not a difficult person to deal with. Anyways, it was really bothering me. Why you ask?

My professional background has been 100% in the service industry. I started out as a secretary (back in 1986) at the Holiday Inn in Mesa, AZ for the Sales Department. From there I moved my way up to Convention Services and finally National Group Sales for one of the valley’s top resorts.

If it’s one thing the hotel industry is it’s big on customer service and training. I went through several training courses throughout my career provided by the hotel or resort chain that I was working with at the time. Giving good service is one of those things that comes naturally to me and I also expect it as a consumer.

I learned to really care about people, know my stuff and take myself out of the equation. It’s about making people feel good about their decision and have them come back to you with their friends and family in the future.

It’s really pretty simple, “give” (keyword, indeed) exceptional customer service that is consistent each and every time. Traveling to Sun City, Grand & West-What’s Going on with Road Construction?

It’s been a great summer and things are winding down again. It’s that fall shoulder season and temperatures are cooler and it’s time to plan a head for the holidays. Well, if you’re traveling, it’s definitely time to plan ahead.

If you plan on utilizing I-10, I-17 or any of the Loops to come back to Sun City, Sun City West or Sun City Grand, check out the major improvements underway to our freeways etc… It might even be a good idea to avoid some of these areas, if you know your way around them well enough. At least it’s a good idea to know what to expect and how that might affect your travel time and route.

We travel quite frequently in our motor home so we check on what improvements are going on. We were unfortunate about 6 years ago to be going through an area that was being paved or tarred. Let’s just say it took us quite awhile to get the tar off of the motor home and our tow vehicle.

Happy and safe travels as you make your way back south for the holidays and winter months. Oh, try to avoid getting stuck in rush hour traffic on your way back into town. We’ll be here waiting for you.

Some Simple Energy Efficient Adjustments…Around the House

Maybe you’ve been thinking about making some personal changes regarding being more conservative or saving on energy costs. After all, we have more choices today than those before us and last I checked the cost of living hasn’t dropped. Maybe we can save ourselves a little of the green stuff too.

Once you get in the swing of things, it’s pretty rewarding to know that you are making a positive impact towards your bottom line and the environment. One person at a time is all it takes. I know this is pretty basic stuff and just the tip of the iceberg as far what one can do. I’m sure there are individuals out there that still brush their teeth with the water running. So, slow down and don’t forget to floss, oh, I mean turn the lights off behind you….

The following are some things to consider…

Water

-Fill the washing machine to accommodate the amount of clothing you are washing. In other words, if it’s a small load use the small water setting.

-Consider taking a shorter shower or turning off the water when you lather up.

-Turn the water off when you brush your teeth, that’s a simple one.

-Don’t flush stuff down the toilet, throw it in the trash or recycle it.

-Run the dishwasher when it’s full. Consider using a shorter wash cycle or not using the heated drying cycle. -Make sure your toilet isn’t running, the faucets aren’t dripping and your yard watering system isn’t leaking or watering dead plants. Remember to make seasonal adjustments to your automatic programming system. If it rains, turn off the system and enjoy water compliments of Mother Nature.

Lights/Electric

-Turn off the lights when you’re not using them. No need to illuminate the whole house if you’re in the living room.

-Open blinds or drapery instead of using lights. The natural light is so soothing. -Consider installing Solatube skylights for natural light in those darker hallways or laundry rooms. http://www.solatube.com/homeowner/

-Plug your office equipment into a power bar, the ones that you can turn off with a switch that have the multiple outlets. Turn it off when you’re not using your computer equipment.

-Hang your clothing to dry, no need to fire up the dryer if you can hang dry. -Use CFL (compact fluorescent lights). Change them out a little at a time.

-Keep your refrigerator and freeze settings reasonable. No need to max them out. Oh yeah, get in and get out, don’t graze while you’re at the icebox.

-Ceiling fans can help circulate the air and help the heating and cooling systems work more efficiently.

Heating & A/C

-Clean your air/heater filter…she’ll run more efficiently.

-Keep your major appliances running efficiently by servicing them on a regular basis.

-Talk with your utility provider to find out what times are better for energy usage. Maybe they offer time of use programs that can save energy and money.

-Turn the thermostat up or down when you’re gone for the day.

-Close windows, blinds and curtains to keep heat out in the summer. Do the opposite in the winter months.

-Could you add more insulation to the house? Maybe check the window seals?

Waste/Trash

-Use paper bags instead of plastic bags, then recycle or reuse them. Purchase bags that you can use every time you shop. I’ve gotten in the habit of keeping these in my car.

-Sort your trash plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, etc…then dispose of it accordingly. There are several options within your own community or city for recycling.

-Donate household items, don’t throw them away. There are so many people that could benefit from things we don’t want anymore. This includes old cell phones, appliances and electronics.

-Re-use your Starbucks coffee cup or take your own cup to get coffee instead of using paper.

-Stop receiving paper bills, cut back on magazines and call off those junk mail companies. When you get junk mail, call the company and have them take you off of their mailing list.

-Recycle or give your used books and magazines to schools, libraries etc…

Some Facts:

-Reducing your speed to 55 mph from 70 mph could increase your fuel efficiency by as much as 23% (or get you run off the road).

-On average, American consumers drink about 28 gallons of bottled water annually per person. Where are all those bottles going?

-Using an efficient dishwasher can actually save more water than washing by hand.

Arizona Department of Real Estate Buyer Advisory-What a Great Tool!

Okay, so we know about the ADRE Buyer Advisory as Arizona real estate professionals and we rely on it quite a bit to educate our clients. When it comes to our clients discovering things that might be important to them when considering the purchase of real property in Arizona, this advisory is a must have. I absolutely look forward to providing this report to my clients; it’s one of the first things I give to them.

When was the last time you used it yourself to learn something you didn’t know? I recently had a gentleman ask me about information on purchasing homes that might have been used for drug labs or other illegal activity. Since no one had ever asked that specific question before, I thought I had better check it out myself.

On page 5 of the ADRE Buyer Advisory you will find information on this subject. So I clicked on the link and found myself at the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration website. Well, this seemed like the wrong website, I figured I would be going to a law enforcement website where I could look up these properties. Think again. This website provides a plethora of information.

Here’s an overview of the Board of Technical Registrants:

The Board of Technical Registration was established in 1921. It is a self-supporting board deriving its revenues from fee charges for application, examination, license renewal and other miscellaneous services rendered.

The day-to-day operations of the Board are overseen by an Executive Director appointed by the Board, eighteen staff members, and an Assistant Attorney General assigned to the Board. Office operations include Administration, Enforcement/Investigations, Licensing & Examination, and Home Inspection/ Drug Lab Remediation Enforcement. The Board is a regulatory agency for the following professions and occupations: Architects, Assayers, Certified Remediation Specialists, Clandestine Drug Laboratory Site Remediation On-Site Workers and On-Site Supervisors, Engineers, Geologists, Home Inspectors, Landscape Architects, and Surveyors.

Members of the Board are appointed by the Governor for three-year terms.

You see, my point here is, while we don’t need to be experts with all of the information that can be found on the ADRE Buyer Advisory, it sure is good to go through the motions our clients do once in a while so that we may better relate to things that may be important to them.

My other point, this was just one issue my client raised to me. By my taking the time to research this myself, I found out so much more information. This information will undoubtedly be of benefit to myself and future clients of mine.

It’s a big world out there and there is a lot of information at our finger tips. All it takes is a little time and after all, aren’t we all here to help others by sharing what we know.

Del E. Webb, A Brief History of a Brilliant Man

May 17, 1889-July 4, 1974

I don’t really think anyone knows who Del E. Webb was other than those closest to him. But being on the public side of things, I see him as a visionary and a driven man who not only thought of what he could do now, but how he might impact the future. I most certainly would have been honored to work with such a man. Del E. Webb was born in Fresno, California in 1899 to a wealthy family. Mr. Webb and his wife, Hazel (they

divorced in 1952) moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1928 and Mr. Webb worked construction with a small contractor building a grocery store. Supposedly the contractor bounced his paycheck and disappeared. After that the grocer asked Mr. Webb to take over and complete the job and that’s when Del E. Webb Construction Company started business.

Another interesting tidbit that I didn’t know was that the Del E. Webb Construction Co. obtained government construction contracts for military installations and air bases in Southern California and Arizona during World War II. Del E. Webb Construction Co. was one of the largest construction companies in the United States in the 1960’s.

After the war Mr. Webb worked on peace-time projects for the government which introduced him to many influential individuals. Sharing the love of flying Howard Hughes and Mr. Webb became good friends. They would often golf together with the likes of Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Barry & Robert Goldwater. He saw golf as an opportunity to make new deals; he also belonged to no less than 14 clubs around the United States.

Not only did Mr. Webb work on government projects but he also helped homeowners during the war. They remembered him when they were ready to build. In 1948 Mr. Webb built a 600 home project in Tucson which including shopping. This was called Pueblo Gardens. Undoubtedly his experience building cities for the military was of benefit to his future in building. I think it was a warm up project to Sun City myself.

In 1954 Mr. Webb and a partner bought the New York Yankees. During the time Mr. Webb owned the Yankees, they won the World Series 10 of the 20 years he was part owner. Let’s say I believe it was a profitable business deal. Seeing his love of baseball it’s easy to understand why the softball/baseball fields were incorporated into the Sun City communities.

The cotton field was converted into the city we now know as Sun City. There were five model homes, a golf course, recreation center and shopping center. January 1, 1960 the day of opening brought more than 100,000 people over the three day weekend. It was so successful Mr. Webb achieved Time Magazine’s cover in 1964 as their Man of the Year and that really launched things for his company.

Another tidbit I didn’t know was that Mr. Webb constructed the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for Bugsy Siegel. Evidently Mr. Webb got into gaming along with Howard Hughes. This really had a positive impact on the Las Vegas image.

“When I see what we’ve built,” he says, it’s the most satisfying thing that’s ever happened to me. Then an old fellow came up to me once with tears in his eyes and thanked me for building Sun City. He said he was planning to spend the happiest 40 years of his life there.” Mr. Webb never spent more than a few days at Sun City, he was uneasy with being in one place for too long.

Mr. Webb built schools, military bases, dorms at Northern Arizona University, Madison Square Garden, Chris Town mall in Phoenix, the first sky scraper in Phoenix, Anaheim Stadium, several hospitals including VA hospitals & Maricopa County General Hospital, hotels & resorts including the Beverly Hilton, Mountain Shadows Resort in Paradise Valley (don’t think it’s a resort anymore) and hotels in Las Vegas and Laughlin.

From what I have read Mr. Webb was a go getter. He was never idle for very long. He was avid about many things from not smoking, golf and baseball. It was important to him to give back to the communities and you can see that if you spend time driving around the Sun Cities of Phoenix.

Other names worth mentioning are rancher Jim Boswell, a partner in the joint venture called Del E. Webb Development Co., and R.H. “Bob” Johnson, a name recognizable to Sun City West residents as the city’s main boulevard, recreation center and library were named after him.

With Sun Cities from Nevada to Florida, the Del Webb Corporation merger with Pulte Homes, Inc. was finalized on July 21, 2001.

Mr. Webb died of prostate cancer in 1974 (35 years ago), he was 75 years old. He had no children (of his own). His second wife Toni Webb survived him and lived in Beverly Hills. I’m not sure if she is still alive as of this writing. Much of Mr. Webb’s fortune went into the Del E. Webb Foundation and funds medical projects in Arizona, Nevada and California.

As we celebrate this 4th of July 2009, let us not only remember those who voted for American Independence from Britain. Let us remember a man who impacted the lives of many American homeowners, military men and women of yesterday and today with his vision for the future. We will benefit from his successes and generosity for years to come.

Salt & How to Reduce it in Your Diet

I was watching the nightly news broadcast last evening and they were running a story on sodium. The matter was that restaurants are putting so much salt in our foods, some meals with 4 days worth of salt in one entree. Not only restaurants but packaged foods have tons of salt and other unknown ingredients.

The recommended dosage of salt is less than 2,300 mg (about 1 teaspoon). Now keep in mind if you sweat and get a lot of exercise, etc....you may need to replenish that salt lost during exercising and work.

On a side note regarding sweating and exercise. While on a Grand Canyon backpacking trip one year I depleted most of the sodium from my system. The straps on my backpack had white stains on them from the salt in my sweat. Once we determined that I needed more salt I relaxed, drank a bucket load of Gatorade and salty foods. In this case and that of endurance athletes salt intake was crucial. While I was drinking plenty of water, I was sweating out the salt while hiking. The condition I had is called hyponatremia. The hike was over 8 hours long with a 40 pound pack on my back.

This takes me to my experience in the grocery store the other day. I was trying to decide if I wanted lower fat plain yogurt or regular plain yogurt. It appears that when things are lower fat or light they contain more salt. Why is that? Is it because they think that we won't like the way it tastes? If we slowly lowered the salt content in our foods (and didn't add other junk to it) we would become more acclimated to foods with lower salt content. Just like cutting out sweets. When you eliminate something your body will outgrow it eventually. Believe me when I eat something out and it's really salty it almost burns my throat. Soups by the way are usually very salty in restaurants.

My goal for our household is to take the salt out of our meals by making simple choices and adjustments in what we purchase and eat. Here are a couple of examples:

* No salt butter

* Minimize or eliminate processed foods or get those with no or low salt (chips, cookies etc...)

* Use herbs and seasonings to spice up the flavor in foods

* Eat whole foods instead of those that come with seasoning packets or already seasoned or with sauce

* Make your meals from scratch and make your own desserts from scratch

Food tastes like what it is without all that salt on it. Most people will say it enhances the flavor, I don't think so. So if you can kick the salt habit you'll be much better off in the long run and your blood vessels, kidneys and heart will thank you.

Native American Jewelry

Recently, I went on a 16 day Colorado River trip through Grand Canyon National Park. Needless to say it was an excellent experience and I learned so much about the Native Americans that lived and thrived there.

Several of our boatman were wearing these beautiful bracelets by various artists. Each were unique in their own way. As I felt so connected with the place I was in, I was hooked on the history and I wanted to learn more about Native Americans and Silverwork.

If you've never purchased any jewelry or other art that is Native American, you would be surprised at all the designs and their inperpretations.

While browsing jewelry at the Jacob Lake Inn Gift shop in Northern Arizona, (44 miles east of Grand Canyon's North Rim) I came across a beautiful bracelet. All I knew was it was beautiful and unique. After a brief education with one of the sales clerks, I was confused as to what the design was.

The particular bracelet in question had, wind, waves, rain clouds and rain designs and a beautifu turquoise stone, of excellent quality. Of course I couldn't tell it from looking at the bracelet. But once the clerk explained the bracelet to me and showed me some interpretive literture the design made sense. This particular bracelet was stamped on one side, causing the other side to be raised. Most of the artists who do this use their own specific stamp, making the work of each artist unique. This particular technique is used by Navajo, Hopi and Zuni equally.

So, the next time you see Native American jewelry, art, crafts, pottery, baskets etc...remember that there is specific interpretation to each piece.

Hoover Dam

We just went over the Hoover Dam, I mean in the last hour. What an engineering marvel. I've been there a few other times, actually parked and went into the visitor center. Even if you just drive over, it's amazing to see the massive canyon walls and Colorado River below.

I don't know what it is about it, maybe it's the fact that it even exists that is incredible. It was built during the depression and thousands of men (and their families) came to Black Canyon. It took just under 5 years to construct.

I don't know much about engineering, but it is a marvel and I can't imagine what it must have been like to re-route the river and work in the hot conditions of this area.

Some of the benefits of the dam include generation of hydroelectric power, fish and wildlife habitat and recreation.

Another point I wanted to make is the re-route of U.S. 93 that is currently under construction. It was awesome to see this work in progress. There is a massive piece of the road that sticks out just downstrean of the dam and there are all of these wires and pullies, etc...that are in place. I guess the last piece to put in is the one in the middle. This is right over the Colorado River and is so high, I can't imagine working on this project.

Project design began in 2001. The major span across the Colorado River is just down stream from Hoover Dam. You'll still be able to see the dam which is great. I can see where this will be a major improvement as the traffic crossing the dam is conjested and busy with pedestrians.

The purpose is to not use the existing road for U.S.93 through traffic and have it on the new Hoover Dam Bypass. The old U.S. 93 will be used for visitors and Reclemation employees etc...

Colorado River-Through Grand Canyon

A little over a year and a half ago, my husband and I were traveling to Zion National Park in Utah. Zion, if you haven't been, wow you must experience it in your lifetime. Anyhow, we traveled through Kanab, UT on our way and came across Grand Canyon Expeditions which is a company that specializes in Grand Canyon river expeditions. We decided to pop in and check out what they offer. In a nutshell, we ended up reserving one of their 16 Day Dory Expeditions.

We will be beginning our trip on September 14th from Lee's Ferry Arizona and will float 277 miles to Lake Mead, Arizona.

Why in the heck would someone want to spend 16 days on the river? Well, first of all, the Grand Canyon is the most spectacular place I've ever been too. There is so much history, natural beauty and solitude there and it is, in my mind, the trip of a lifetime. I have hiked well over 100 miles in the Grand Canyon and I am looking forward to seeing it and exploring it further from the Colorado River. I have challenged myself physically and psychologically and came out on top a stronger and more fulfilled individual. If you're not strong enough to handle the challenges of what the Grand Canyon has to offer, it will win every time. It's called survival and doing what it takes to make things happen no matter what the challenge.

If there is something out there that you believe is your must do or trip of a lifetime, get out there and make it happen. Don't wait, no one else is going to make it happen for you.

Solar Energy

It's that time of the year when residents in Arizona are feeling the pain of their utility bill. Consider today, it was forecasted to get up to 112. Let's just say the air conditioning units are working extra hard right now. Because of this, it peaked my curiosity to check into the option of homes in the area that I work in (Sun City West, Surprise or west valley) being able to have solar energy. Really, there's no better place than Arizona to harvest the suns rays for energy. I decided to look to one of Arizona's utility providers in the area for direction. This particular company offers a Renewable Incentive Program for residential customers to participate in. Of course the home would need to be in the area where this particular utility company provides service. Along with the utility company incentives, there could also be Federal and State tax credits offered. So not only could you end up saving money over the long term there would also be a positive impact on Arizona's environment. There's so much to think about when it comes to conserving energy and making a difference.

Going "Green" a little bit at a time!

I've been making it a point to have a positive impact on our environment, not only in educating my spouse on how we can change our waste habits, but in everything we do. Mind you it has taken a bit of conditioning to get there, just last Saturday night we rode our bicycles out to dinner. Let's take shopping for example. Recently, I went to WalMart to stock up on a few things. When I got to the check out, I asked if they had paper bags. The clerk looked at me, with disappointment and what I detected a bit of shame at not having paper to offer me. So I took my purchase without bags. The largest retail giant in the world doesn't even offer the choice of paper vs plastic...anyhow, I think the clerk thought I was a bit weird, but I know for a fact it made him think about a few things. My point, positive actions in our every day life will not only help us but also those individuals that we come in contact with. I hope you've had many positive experiences today.

Protect your 4 legged family members from the summer heat!

I've come in contact with customers that just don't allow their pets inside. And in Arizona, that just seems tough. As a matter of fact, one in particular hoses down their pet periodically during the day.

Here's some food for thought:

Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle. Walk them when it's cooler, hot asphalt and pavement can burn their pads. Depending on your dogs age, health and type of coat, it can quickly succumb to heat-stress just like humans.

Make sure to give your pet plenty of fresh drinking water and shade while they're outdoors. If you shaved down your pet for the summer, then you need to protect them from the sun. Sunscreen is definitely an option here.

This time of year it's good to have them on preventative tick and flea medicines. I only put mine on them in the summer months.

And my final thought, don't take fluffy to a crowded smoldering summer event. In Arizona particularly, it's just too hot.
