Orange County Cities among Safest Cities 2009

A recently released report that tracks six different crime areas ranked several local cities as among the safest in the country, and three Orange County cities made the ten list!

This report tracks murder, rape, burglary, robbery, aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft. The overall good news is that there are fewer reported crimes over the past year! The FBI reports violent crimes are down 1.9%; property crimes are down 0.8%.

Mission Viejo is ranked number three for 2009; it has dropped on spot since the 2008 report. Its crime rate is 81.03% below the national average.

Irvine is ranked number four for 2009 - a significant jump for its number eleven spot in 2008! Its crime rate is 78.91% below the national average.

Lake Forest jumped two spots from number twelve in 2008 to number ten in 2009. Its crime rate is 70.61% below the national average.

Just one more reason to make Orange County your home.

Fire Safety Reminders

Each year, fires kill more Americans than any other natural disaster. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 80% of fire deaths occur in residences. While no home can ever be completely fireproof, I have some suggestions to help reduce your risk of fire:

Smoke Detectors - the number one way to provide home fire safety! Does your home have smoke detectors? How many? There should be at least one in every bedroom! When did you test them last? Test them now! Schedule it so you test them frequently! If your smoke detectors require batteries replace them on a regular basis. Time change is coming and that when most people change their batteries.

Appliances - use them wisely. If you smell unusual smells or the appliance over heats, or you see sparks these are warning signs to shut it off, unplug it and replace it! Another important reminder, unplug the appliances that are not in use - not only is this important for fire safety but also good for your energy bill.

Circuits & Extension Cords - Never overload circuits or extension cords. Don't place cords or wires under rugs, over nails, or in high traffic areas.

Portable Heaters - allow at least three feet of space from any combustible materials. Turn them off if you leave the room or are sleeping! Use with extreme caution!

Fireplaces - never leave a fire burning when you are not home. Use a fire screen, and be sure your chimney is cleaned annually.

Fire Extinguishers - you should have at least two fire extinguishers in your home, with one in a designated place in the kitchen. Cooking fires are the leading cause of both home fires and home fire injuries in the U.S.

Candles - extinguish them before going to bed or when leaving a room.

Smokers - always use an ashtray and exercise caution. Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in the U.S.

Heating System & Dryer Vents - properly inspect and maintain them on a regular schedule.

These are just a few ways that you can make your home a safer place from fire. More information can be found on the U.S. Fire Administration's website, www.usfa.fema.gov, or by contacting your local fire department.

Brushing Up

A freshly painted room can give a new look and feel to your home. Fresh paint is a great selling point, too.

However, it is important to do the job correctly. Here are few tips to help you save time, money and get good results!

Before you start:

Turn off electrical power to the room and remove the cover plates on switches and outlets.

Remove window hardware - if necessary.

Cover wall lighting fixtures, or remove them.

Remove door knobs and strike plates at the latch.

If you don't remove all of the furniture be sure to cover and protect it; moving all furniture to the center of the room is helpful too.

Protect the floor with a heavy duty drop cloth - be sure to use more than a "thin" sheet - if you drop or spill be sure the drop cloth will hold the spill.

Patch any holes - use a putty knife and wall-patch compound. Allow it to dry overnight. Be sure to sand repaired area, then clean area so no dust remains.

Wash the walls from the bottom up using TSP (available in most hardware stores). Rinse walls with clean water and a sponge. Allow walls to dry before taping. Protect molding, windowsills with painters tape. Make sure tape is flush with molding for best results. Use tape where you desire a straight line and/or patterns or decorations for different colors of paint.

Finally - apply the paint! Experts recommend using a primer before adding your final color. For best results paint in the following order: ceiling; walls, baseboard trim, door, door trim, window trim.

Don't Trash It......Re-use It!

In the interest of "being green" I found a few ideas of things you don't have to trash, you can re-use them! Remember if we each only do one thing it will make a big difference, just think how much better things will be if we each did 2 or 3 things!?!

Wine corks

Wrap them together with a wire and you have a nice new trivet! I bet it is a great converstation starter too!
Arrange them inside a "frame" some can stand on end, some can lay down - glue them in place and you have a bulletin board! Perfect for the kitchen!

Table Cloth - have a stained one? Cut around the stain and make napkins!

When your loofah is headed to the trash use it one last time to scrub the tub, shower and tile!

Scratched or old CD's or DVD's

Glue them to the back of your child's bike as a safety reflector.
Use as a "mirror" in an office to check your reflection or as a way to see behind you as you sit at your desk (if the door is behind you).
Reflectors to warn off woodpeckers.
String a couple together to make a sun catcher.
Create a clock but adding clock works to the center hole.

One last thougth for this "green" day - if you recycle your Sunday paper every week you will keep 4 trees alive per year and increase the earth's oxygen!

It is time to say Hello to August! And with it's arrival we can look forward to the "dog days of summer" and thoughts that put a smile on the face of parents and sense of dread in kids - Back To School!

Over the next several days I want to talk about Back to School Safety, Hints & Tips! Not only for the students in your life but for parents too!

Today we will focus on safety:

Go over important information with your child - do they know their address; phone number (all the numbers they need to reach you or other realatives); do they know who it is okay to accept a ride with; do you have a code word to "authorize" some one different to pick them up from school; is it okay for them to leave campus for lunch; safety issues about riding with their friends - many states have newer laws about who can be in a car with a newly licensed driver, be sure you know these laws.

Plan a safe route to school, choosing the most direct way with the fewest street crossings. Tell your child to stay on this route and review safe street crossing procedures. Teach your child all traffic safety rules and remind him or her to be especially careful during bad weather. If possible, your child should always walk or bike to school with a buddy. If your child is driving to school for the first time, be sure they know what to do in the event of an accident; bad weather; giving rides to friends; snow routes; how to approach high water areas. Everyone should be extra aware of school zones and areas that are well traveled routes between schools and neighborhoods!

College bound students:
     Check with your insurance carrier about "renters" insurance - every policy has different coverage for dorm room contents.
     If your student is going out of state do they need different/additional auto insurance?
     Medical insurance, what is your coverage where your student is going to college? Is there an on-campus facility they can use and what are the charges - where is the nearest Emergency Room and do they accept your insurance.   Discuss with your child what constitutes a trip to ER and what constitutes a trip to the campus nurse (if there is one) and if and where they can go in for a "routine" office visit.   Remember dental visits/needs too.   Flu shots? Swine Flu Shots?
    Talk to your child about "sharing" prescription medication.
    Be sure they have emergency contact information with them, in their cell phones, in their purse or wallet. Do you know how to reach them on campus? Their friends cell phone numbers?

Okay, a quick giggle to end with:

Victoria returned to school in fine form, causing a ruckus from day one. Her teacher called her mother after only one week to tell her that her daughter was misbehaving.

"Just a minute there," said her mother. "I've had her for three whole months, and not once did I call you to complain when she acted up."

Try Something New - Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Every now and then I find I have a little time on my hands and want to try something new, so I look on the area websites and see what I can find that catches my eye, will allow me to step out of my comfort zone. Today is one of those days!

How about a Feng Shui class? This subject always intrigues me, and you know I find if I move one or two things it really does seem to make a difference.

Here is the class description:
The arrangement and contents of an environment affect the flow of vital energies that then influence all aspects of life, from money matters to romance. Learn to direct that flow in this introductory workshop on Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of harmonizing within the home or workplace. Instructor: Elliot Tanzer.

There are 19 seats available for this class, yes I know it is tomorrow night, but it is worth a try!

Stress is everywhere - it's how we deal with stress that has a direct link to how stressed we are.

If stress gets the best of us it can lead to many other problems so let's talk about some proactive ways we can keep our stress in-check!

Find Your Bliss

Find something that brings you joy, a hobby is a great way to keep things under control. Creative hobbies can help you give expression to your inner thoughts and emotions. Be active, get out and experience other people and fresh air. Remember to give yourself permission to experience the refreshing benefits of engaging in a rewarding hobby. Volunteering helps the mind, the body and the soul, try something new, something outside of your comfort zone and daily routine. There are even studies to show that volunteering helps improve your life-span!

Feed Your Spirit

Prayer or meditation are powerful stress reducers.

Talk the Talk

Don't keep your stress bottled up - find someone to confide in - talk things out. Often times the simple act of verbalizing your frustrations and fears will decrease and diminish the effects of stress.

Walk the Walk

One of the best ways to beat stress is regular exercise. Make time for 20 minutes of physically activity every day and you will begin to see improvements in several areas of your life. A walk around the parking lot is perfect when you are at work - even 10 minutes will help! The fresh air, the act of getting up and away from your desk will allow you to clear your mind, and you will come back refreshed and ready to continue. It can lower your blood pressure too!

Animal Attraction

Studies show that people who own pets live longer! A new pet will help you focus on something different in your life - or maybe volunteer to walk dogs as your way to get exercise, volunteer, and enjoy the benefits of animals!

Eat Mindfully

Stress can cause some to over-eat and some under-eat or eat very unhealthy. Start by looking at what foods are at your finger tips, if you are stressed what is the easiest thing to toss in your mouth? If it is junk food, get rid of it, put some healthy choices within easy reach!

Silence is Golden

TV, iPods, cell phones, radios all that noise can just add to stress! Turn things off and sit in the silence and listen to the birds and crickets! And remember to turn down the volume on all those electronic devices too!

Relax and take time to smell the roses and maybe even eat dessert first!

Household Clutter

Having a cluttered house can be a challenge to you on many levels! And keeping clutter under control can be a constant task, but the need to organize everything from seasonal clothing to kitchen spices is vital for the overall running of the home. While some households appear to tackle clutter better than others, every homeowner can benefit from clutter busters that help keep this and that in their proper place around the house. Here are some tips and hints I have found useful:

Buy Containers for Storage - If you think that buying a bigger home is the answer to your clutter, you are wrong, as the more room you have the more stuff you have to clutter it up! Instead, buy organizing features that will allow you to cope with your accumulation of stuff. Clear plastic totes in various sizes will allow you to see what's stored inside and they can easily be stacked, in the basement, in the garage or in closets. Some ideas of things to store: photos, shoes, seasonal decorations, seasonal clothing & bedding, magazines, hobby supplies, tools, toys, just about anything! Don't forget about using space bags, closet organizers, and matching basketry for storing various items and possibly giving your decorating a boast.
Buy Dual Purpose Furniture - When furniture shopping for more general needs like coffee tables and children's beds, buyers might consider purchasing pieces that provide additional function. For example, a large square coffee table might double as a storage receptacle for audiovisual materials, board games, or photo albums. Some beds come with drawers built into their bottoms for additional storage.
Keep Items Together - Another good tip to eliminate the appearance of clutter is to keep similar items together. By storing items such as books, baking ware, dishes, glassware, or toiletries in their own specific locations, the appearance is apt to look neater and more suited to function. And some items can be stored in plain sight and part of your décor!
Keep a Cleaning Schedule - This is the most challenging for me but the most effective! A consistent cleaning routine can help maintain good household organization and keep the home from looking cluttered. By performing this task often, there will be fewer messes of clutter to deal with.
Have Everyone Help Out - Finally, and some might say most importantly, enlist the help of other household members to maintain a clutter-free atmosphere. When family members take responsibility for their personal space, it is much easier to maintain an organized home. The art of good organization requires much practice, but even the youngest family members can benefit from its lessons. When items are stored in their proper place, a clutter-free home is guaranteed.

Road Trip Time

Memorial Day is fast approaching and as I sit here and dream of days gone by when the family would jump in the car and take off for a long weekend of driving togetherness - I also think of how things have changed over the years and thought maybe a few safety tips might be just the ticket for this week's blog!

Did you know that Memorial Day weekend is the 3^rd most perilous holiday for vehicular traffic? Wow! That got my attention (Thanksgiving is #1; July 4^th is 2^nd; Labor Day is 4^th; New Year's Eve is 5^th)
Wear your seat belt! To some that seems like such a no brainer but I am from the generation where we didn't always wear a seat belt and even though it is a habit for me now, it wasn't always! So a gentle reminder: Belt Up!
Turn your headlights on in low visibility! Remember you have headlights to see but more importantly to be seen! At dusk; in fog conditions; light rain - turn them on! Did you know that we only do about 25% of our driving miles at night but 50% or 25,000 people each year are fatalities that occur in the darkness!
Don't drive drowsy! I know it is tempting when you are only an hour away from your destination....but is that extra push worth your life? 100,000 reported accidents, 71,000 injuries and 1,550 deaths every year are attributed to drivers that fall asleep!
Use your signals! Let people know what your intentions are!
Don't tailgate and get away from tailgaters! When I taught the kids to drive I always told them that they needed to be able to see the tires (the entire tire) of the car in front of them! This is a good rule of thumb that is easy for everyone to understand! If someone is tailgating you this is NOT the time to teach someone the lesson by tapping your brakes or other gestures that tell them to back off! The best and safest thing to do is let them pass you, if necessary pull over and let them go by!
Obey the speed limit signs...especially in construction zones! Where ever you are going you want to get there and not endanger yourself, your passengers or others!
Stay alert! Talking on the cell phone, checking your GPS, texting, reading maps can be more distracting than you realize! You are driving give it your undivided attention!
Take out time to stop and see the sights! Even a short break of walking around the car a few times (if there is nothing to see) will refresh you and give you a renewed spirit to continue on your way!
Before you leave be sure to check the fluids and tire pressure! Familiarize yourself with your planned route.

Spring Cleaning with Conscience

My last couple of posts have been about spring cleaning in ways that are good for the environment and for our wallets. I realize we are all busy and maybe you don't want to make your own cleaning supplies, there are numerous companies that are in the business of creating eco-friendly solutions to clean with. Here are a few of them:

Begley's Best All Purpose Cleaner - it is biodegradable and rapidly renewable.

Biokleen Produce Wash - this product safely removes waxes, soils and chemical sprays. It can also be used on cutting boards and counter tops.

Seventh Generation's Automatic Dish Gel gets dishes sparkling clean.

The Naked Sponge features no dyes and 100% cellulose as well as being compostable.

Spring Cleaning Recipes

Last week we talked about spring cleaning the Eco-friendly way, today I want to talk about how to make cleaners yourself! Not only are they more "eco-friendly" but they are also more cost-friendly!

All-purpose cleaner:

Mix 2 heaping tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon white vinegar and store in an airtight container.

Scouring cleaner:

Combine 1 teaspoon borax, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, and 2 cups hot water. Pour mixture into a spray bottle.

Disinfectant:

Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons white vinegar, and 3 cups hot water. Pour mixture into a spray bottle.

All-purpose spray cleaner:

In a bucket, mix 4 quarts hot water, 2 tablespoons cloudy ammonia, 4 fluid ounces white vinegar, 2 tablespoons baking soda, 2 drops lavender or lemon oil, and 2 table spoons basic household soap cleaner. Cool, then fill spray bottles. This all-purpose cleaner is suitable for the kitchen and bathroom.

Disinfecting floor cleaner:

Mix ½ cup borax and 3 quarts hot water together. Use the cleaner with a cloth or mop.

Natural toilet cleaner:

Mix 1 cup borax and ¼ cup white vinegar or lemon juice together and pour into the toilet bowl. Least at least a few hours, overnight if possible, then scrub bowl with a toilet brush. Add a few drops of pine oil to the recipe for extra disinfectant power.

Spring Cleaning the Eco-Friendly Way

As spring begins to sprout and as we begin to think of Spring Cleaning we should also think of eco-friendly ways to do this annual rite of passage! And let's think of ways we can help our budgets too!

Today let's focus on items we already have in our house that can help us save money, be kind to the environment and helps us with cleaning chores:

White Vinegar: great for removing bathroom scum and hard water deposits, as well as discoloration from metals such as aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper. Vinegar is a moderately strong acid. It can also remove rust stains and rust on iron and makes it an ideal cleanser for bathrooms. Also, use it in laundry as an additive to help colors stay "sharp" it is especially good at keeping the blue in blue jeans!
Salt: a natural, gentle abrasive and disinfectant. Salt is useful for cleaning/clearing drains, removing ink stains from carpet and scouring kitchen utensils. It is also helpful in removing tea stains from your tea cup.
Lemon juice: natural bleach that can be used for many purposes. Lemon juice removes stains, deodorizes and inhibits mold.
Baking soda: Use it to clean and deodorize drains, refrigerators, and as a paste to remove "red" stains from plastic ware. It is also useful to extinguish fires. Baking soda is gently, moderately alkaline, non-toxic and abrasive - it cuts through grease and oil, as it reacts with the fatty acids to form a mild detergent.

Here read it for yourself:

"Mortgage rates expected to slide with Fed's new moves" was the headline of the L.A. Times late in the afternoon on March 18th. Then, this morning on Good Morning America, the possibility of interest rates as low as 4% were discussed . Finally, Bloomberg reported today that U.S. mortgage rates may fall to the lowest since World War II..." Indeed, rates are already moving lower. The L.A. Times reported that "some mortgage brokers were already quoting rates in the 4.5% to 4.75% range today, not including upfront fees..."

If you have been sitting on the fence waiting for a sign that it is a time to buy....this is that sign! Remember if you are a first time home buyer there are still those 8,000 reasons we talked about a few weeks ago!

Time to Spring Ahead!

Before you go to bed on Saturday, move your clocks ahead one hour!

Spring is in the air! The sunny days of Southern California are sunnier and the flowers are blooming!

Spring Cleaning - Houseplants

When spring cleaning don't forget your house plants!

First thing I do is get out the clippers and remove dead leaves and trim overgrown stems.

I also check the soil to see if it is packed; if it is use chopsticks or a meat fork to poke holes in the soil. This will allow the water and air to get down to the roots. If the dirt has eroded add about an inch of fresh potting soil mixed with dried coffee grounds (the grounds keep the texture light) and stir in with the existing soil. Then add a dose of slow-release plant food to each plant.

A damp microfiber cloth removes dust and grime on your hard leaf plans! There is commercial leaf polish to make the leaves shine, but a drop of vegetable oil (NOT cooking spray) on a paper towel will do the trick just as well. Wipe over the leaf tops only, this allows the pores underneath to breathe, and then buff the leaves to a gleaming shine!

A pot is a plants home and you want to be sure it is well cared for and nice looking as well! If your clay pots look chalky form mineral deposits, spiff them up with a scrubby dipped in vinegar and wipe off the crud with a damp sponge. A light coat of baby oil after they dry makes them look like new!

Plants add color to our lives and this is a great time to show your appreciation!

Each type of buyer presents a unique set of circumstances.

Area Happenings!

The City of Irvine kicks off its annual "Sounds of Spring" concert series on Sunday, February 22, with an afternoon of solo and ensemble chamber music performed by the UCI Chamber Fest. Under the direction of renowned cellist Dr. Margaret Parkins, the Chamber is comprised of musicians from UCI's chamber music program who will perform musical selections highlighting the sounds of string, wind and piano.

Stars of Tomorrow showcase Irvine’s “best of the best,” on Sunday, March 22, with a non-stop performance of music, dance and theatre performed by students from Irvine schools.

Rounding out the series on Sunday, April 26, the Young Musicians Ensemble, a highly regarded organization of talented virtuosos, pair their musical talents with Fluid Dynamics, an a capella group from Caltech, for an afternoon of beautiful harmony.

Admission is free, however seating is limited. Concerts begin at 4 p.m. at the Irvine Civic Center, followed by a reception with the performers. For more information, call 949-724-6606.

One of my favorite ways to "ring" in the season is listening to handbells - and this is a wonderful event!

Celebrate the season with uplifting music! The City of Irvine invites the community to ring in the season with the joyful sounds of concert handbells and a concert of seasonal and holiday music.

Saturday, December 13th, a pre-show featuring concert handbells will begin at 9:15 a.m. The choral concert will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will conclude with a reception for the public to meet the performers.

This year, the Joyful Jingles family holiday concert will be presented for the first time at Irvine Valley College Performing Arts Center. The theater is located on the Irvine Valley College campus at 5500 Irvine Center Drive, Irvine.

Will Santa Bring A Buyer?

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Will Santa Bring Me a Buyer?

If I list my home now, during the holiday season, will Santa bring me a qualified buyer, or a lump of coal?

There are there two schools of thought on listing your home during this season (1) it adds a big amount of stress to an already stressful time (2) only serious buyers look at this time of year!

So, yes, it adds stress to your life during this busy season, but your home is decorated and showing its best so why not let buyers see it! You could even use it as an excuse for an out of town trip - the house will stay looking lovely and you won't be interrupted with showings - or maybe tell those holiday visitors "not this year the house is on the market"!

Yes, there will probably be less activity during this busy time, but those that do go out and look at homes are serious, ready to buy, buyers! And other people have taken their homes off the market so there is less "stock" for serious buyers to consider! Yes, Virginia! Companies still relocate employees and it is not uncommon for those transfers to happen during this season, companies want the transferred employee to be moved to the new location and settled in so they ready to take the reins January 1st!

Bottom line - decorate the house, place the sign, sit on Santa's lap and ask for a buyer this year!

Oh by the way......make a note to take "fresh" pictures of the house after the holiday decorations come down!
