WINTER
There really is no place like Truckee California. A place of great character and rich western history, it was formerly an old logging town, a source of ice prior to refrigeration, and an important and notorious part of the transcontinental railroad (did we forget to mention the Donner Party?). This was all before the tourism, sports and leisure industries discovered the many faces of Truckee, Donner Pass and the surrounding area.

Winter Recreation
Truckee is beautiful, historic and a fantastic gateway to the Sierra for nearly "anything winter." The town harbors an old west feel that can't be matched, and down the roads that cross here, you'll find incredible diversity-Reno and the desert, Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass to Nevada City, Grass Valley and Sacramento...the list goes on. Nearly anything that you seek in the summer is only a short drive away when you're standing in downtown Truckee.

Summer Recreation
Truckee is a fantastic hub for summer activities as well, whether you're a hiker, cyclist, river rat, climber or golfer. Check in with the local sporting goods stores for the inside line on your activity of choice. Tourists and sightseers will also not want to miss Truckee, with its wonderful weather and scenic views.

TRUCKEE YEAR-ROUND
Accommodations: Truckee has many types of unique lodging. For local flavor, look for quaint old hotels downtown, or maybe some B&Bs in the surrounding area. For larger parties or extended stays, try a vacation rental home.

Gaming: If you just have to gamble, you'll have to drive. Pick from Reno, Crystal Bay or Incline Village.

Nightlife and Entertainment: There are some great bars and smaller clubs in Truckee. Look for some cool local bands at night!

Transportation: If you can, bring your own vehicle, or a rental from on of the nearby major airports, as the things you'll want to see and do will be miles apart. Otherwise, if you spot a cab, jump in.

WINTER
America's Deepest Snow! The ski area is famous for challenging terrain wide open bowls and incredible powder days, but Kirkwood is more than just skiing and riding. This area is rich in history, and right on the Mormon Emigrant Trail. In fact, just next to the top of Chair 4 on Kirkwood's back side, is the highest spot in the US ever traversed by a covered wagon. Also don't forget to stop for a hot meal at the Kirkwood Inn, built over 140 years ago by Zachariah Kirkwood himself.

SUMMER
In the spring the astonishing snowpack quickly melts, revealing an amazing new world of wildflower-filled meadows, mountain lakes and winding streams, surrounded completely by isolated wilderness. Kirkwood in the summer is an historic and geological wonder, and the Carson Pass location makes it one of the few true gateways to the beautiful High Sierra. Carson Pass is also an access point to many points of interest and hiking trails, including the Pacifc Crest trail.

Summer Recreation
Kirkwood in the summer serves up quite a variety. On the verge of wilderness, hiking and mountain biking are the obvious highlights, and on weekends both are lift serviced, if you so choose. Many There is also horseback riding, really decent fishing and flyfishing in the nearby lakes and streams, and lake activities in nearby Caples and Siver Lakes. Small boats, kayaks and canoes can be rented.

KIRKWOOD YEAR-ROUND
Accommodations: Kirkwood offers a variety of lodging options in a number of condominiums and townhomes that are right at the base of the ski area.

Nightlife and Entertainment: Try Bub's, Off the Wall or the Kirkwood Inn. If you find yourself needing more, head for South Lake Tahoe. Designate a driver, though, because it's 35 miles away.

Food and Drink: Decent dining and cocktail options during the winter season. Year-round, there's always the historic Kirkwood Inn.

Shopping: There is some shopping to be had on the Village Plaza.

Transportation: Free ski shuttle to those staying in South Lake Tahoe. Otherwise, there is very limited transportation to Kirkwood. Definitely best with a rental or your own car, and all-wheel drive is highly recommended during winter months.

This beautiful high-desert area is set against the eastern slope of the Sierra, and is completely diverse in what it offers. It's historic, in the path of the Pony Express and home to Nevada's oldest settlement. The very mild climate brings nearly 300 sunny days a year. And, the Carson Valley is a lesser-known, slower-paced and convenient gateway to the Lake Tahoe area.

Carson Valley Recreation
If it's not here, it's really close by. Just some of the popular activities include golf, gaming, horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking and road biking, hunting, trap shooting and four-wheeling. There are also day spas, museums, ballooning and gliders, flight schools, bowling alleys, movies theaters...even a winery. Only minutes away in the summertime, you'll find boating and lake activities in Topaz or Tahoe and in the winter, nearby hot springs, skiing, snowboarding and cross country.

CARSON VALLEY SERVICES
Accommodations: There is lodging of nearly every type: hotels, motels, casinos, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and RV resorts.

Gaming: It's Nevada. Minden and Gardnerville have some nice, smaller-sized casinos that offer friendly, family-style gaming and entertainment.

Nightlife and Entertainment: How about some good ol' western-style bars and local sports bars. You'll find regular live entertainment at the Carson Valley Inn.

Food and Drink: A good bet for meat and potatoes, but there's some unique variety too, if you look around. Definitely try Basque while you're here!

Shopping: Some interesting local boutiques, galleries and shopping centers. Carson city is also a short drive north on 395.

Transportation: You'll want to bring your own. A few select tour companies cover the Reno / Carson / Tahoe area with chartered transportation.

HISTORIC CARSON CITY
Named for frontiersman Kit Carson who took refuge here during the 1840s with John C. Fremont during their exploration of the Sierra and mapping of the west. Gold prospectors hit silver near Carson City with the famous "Comstock Lode," in 1859. Soon after came the Pony Express, a State Capital, and so much more. Carson City is part of one of the most scenic and historic areas in the entire country, and a main access point for the high Sierra and the beautiful Lake Tahoe region.

Carson City Recreation
The more popular visitor activities in the area include golf, gaming, historic tours and sightseeing. For incredible views, the more adventurous may want to try horseback riding, hang-gliding or hot air ballooning. There are also museums, bowling alleys, movies theaters-even auto racing at Champion Speedway. Only minutes away in the summertime, you'll find the endless mountain and lake activities in Lake Tahoe and in the winter, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobile tours and cross country skiing.

CARSON CITY SERVICES
Accommodations: Many downtown hotels and motels, including several small and medium-sized casinos. There are a few quaint or historic bed and breakfasts and a couple of full service RV resorts.

Gaming: You will find most of the casinos in the downtown area. Basically, right across the street from the Capital building-some have seen recent updates but others, fittingly, are still a bit "old west- style."

Nightlife and Entertainment: Like most things in Carson City, the nightlife in general has a lot of local, western flavor. Downtown casinos, lounges and clubs are your best bet for after dark exploits. Nearby areas offer adult entertainment such as topless cabarets and brothels.

Food and Drink: Again, check the downtown Carson City area and casino strip for the standard fare and also some interesting and creative dining options.

Shopping: Some interesting local boutiques, galleries and shopping centers. Carson city is also a short drive north on 395.

Transportation: There is limited, but improving, local public transportation in Carson City. Your own or a rented vehicle is highly recommended to best take advantage of the area.

RENO AND SPARKS
"The Biggest Little City in the World!" A lot of things to a lot of people, Reno is one of the Country's original gambling meccas, home of the University of Nevada Reno, and the Reno/Tahoe Airport, a major hub and access gateway to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Reno is currently experiencing an industrial boom, and has become one of the faster growing areas in the Nation. Part of the same metropolitan area, Sparks is just east of downtown Reno.

Reno Area Recreation
With its easy access and considerable facilities, Reno is a popular spot for consumer shows and conventions. Most of these take place at the Convention Center and the larger casinos. Reno also hosts a number of other well-known events throughout the year, such as air races, rodeos, the golf tournaments and more. College sporting events are also big with Reno locals and the students at UNR. At some Reno's larger casinos you can take in a big-name show nearly any night of the week. Other recreation would include the many exceptional golf courses in the area, off-road sports in the nearby desert, in addition to the almost endless winter and summer mountain and lake activities found just up the road at Lake Tahoe.

RENO-SPARKS SERVICES
Accommodations: Reno-Sparks offers all types of accommodations. Throughout the city there are hotels, motels, of all kinds. There are inns, bed and breakfasts, spas, campgrounds and RV resorts, and of course Reno has a multitude of casinos and resort hotels.

Gaming: Absolutely! Reno is second in Nevada only to Las Vegas for all types of gaming and sports betting. There are many casinos, large and small, in the downtown area, along Virginia Street and off I80. Most of the casion-style action is right downtown at the casino strip.

Nightlife and Entertainment: Reno has cocktail and social establishments of every genre; nightclubs, lounges, alternative lifestyle, biker bars, local bars and sports bars. You'll find arcades and diversions for the kids and teens at many of the casinos, live entertainment nightly at many casinos and clubs, and adult entertainment and cabarets throughout the downtown area.

Food and Drink: You'll find nearly every kind of dining here; health food, fast food, ethnic food, fine dining, creative cuisine. And there's lots of it. While there are some very good restaurants in the downtown area, in and around the casinos and on the strip, many of the more unique and locally famous establishments are interspersed throughout the area.

Shopping: There are several major malls, many shopping centers and department stores, and there are quite a few warehouse-style stores as well. The shopping experience in Reno, like many things, is quite diverse. Transportation comes in handy when shopping in the Reno-Sparks area.

Transportation: Getting around the more traveled parts of Reno-Sparks by cab is relatively easy. There are airport shuttles to and from the major casinos and downtown Reno. If you're traveling to and from Lake Tahoe, there are also shuttles running regularly between the South Shore Casinos and the Reno/Tahoe International Airport.
