In November 2004 my home was destroyed by a fire. Being a small business owner this was a devastating event that could have ruined my family. What made it even more devastating was when my insurance adjuster asked, "Did I have an inventory of what was lost?" I did not! The irony was, I had been nominated one of the "Top 25 Pros to Know" in the Supply Chain and Logistics industry and specifically on inventory control. However, my experience was in the warehouse and not the living room.

My wife (who was 6 months pregnant with our second son) and I, along with my 4 year old son were forced to stay in a hotel. Because I traveled extensively with my job, often my wife and son would travel with me. It was always a joy for my son to stay in hotels, he felt he was always on vacation. However, this time, after about 2 weeks, my son Gabriel came to me and said, "Daddy I am ready to go home!" But we did not have a home we could return to. He said, "He missed our two dogs Shaka and Baby", who were left at the burnt out home because the hotel would not accept pets. After he walked away I cried and could not stop crying. Months went by, my son was born premature with serious complications, and I was not able to think about anything as I continuously blamed myself for not being prepared. Later I learned I was going to get burned twice because I did not have that inventory, which was crucial to complete my insurance claim.

I decided to take my inventory knowledge and move it from the warehouse to the living room. I spent my time rebuilding my house, because we could not find a contractor to take such a small job, and developing a program named, "Cover Your Assets".

CYA is inventory software for homeowners. It allows a homeowner to inventory their homes contents room by room. However, knowing that most homeowners do not have an inventory of their homes contents because of the amount of time it takes, I also developed "Home Inventory Specialists" that will perform the inventory for the homeowner, input the data into the software and teach the homeowner how to use the software. The last aspect of the program allows the homeowner to store the inventory on our servers, in cyberspace, out of harm's way.

This is a simple concept I know, but after the 2007 fires in California less than 20% of the homes have been rebuilt and most homeowners have cited problems developing their inventory to complete their claims. Others found out after the fire they were underinsured. My goal is to eventually create legislation that will require homeowners to inventory their homes contents within 3 months of purchasing their home.

Keep an Up-to-Date Home Inventory

Do you have enough home owners insurance? Do you have a home inventory list? If you already have one, you should update it. Having an up-to-date inventory of your belongings will be invaluable, should there be a disaster.

To get started, follow these tips to create an inventory:

Walk through the house, room by room, carrying a blank notebook (or copies of inventory sheets) and a digital camera.
Describe each piece of furniture and other valuables. Document make/model/serial number/color/condition and quantity. Provide information about where or from whom the object was obtained.
Be sure to open closets and drawers and describe the contents. Everything counts: including food, medications and cd's!
Take photographs of all items, including the small things that you can group together.
After you download all your photos. Make sure you label them with the date and a description of the items shown.
Keep copies of these photographs and inventory sheets stored at another location, such as at a relative's house in another state.
Keep a copy of all sales receipts, cancelled checks and credit card receipts as proof of purchase and the item's cost.

The information-gathering process may reveal that you need additional insurance, or may want to add a floater policy to cover such objects as antiques, jewelry or special items.

Are You Prepared For The Holidays?

There are several traditions and customs we look forward to every year around this time. But have you ever stopped to wonder where they come from?

For instance, did you know Charles Minnegrode introduced the custom of decorating Christmas trees in 1842? Many people will tell you about the tragedy's that occur around the holidays but using common sense can help prevent your family from becoming a statistic. Such as:

1. Unplug tree lights and other decorations when out of the room or sleeping.

2. Place the Christmas tree well away from heat registers, space heaters, fire places and wood stoves.

3. Check all Christmas tree lights, other electric decorations and electrical appliances for worn electrical cords. Use only UL approved electrical decorations and extension cords.

After the holidays, be sure to add your holiday gifts to your home inventory list for insurance purposes. Fires, floods and earthquakes are real and many homeowners are not prepared when they occur. Very few homeowners have a record of their assets and belongings, such as: paintings on the wall, iPods, holiday decorations, pots and pans, etc.

We recently headed up north going through the Santa Barbara area (which is still burning) and then through different areas around Big Sur and Sacramento. We met several families whose home were destroyed by the fires that are still burning and have jumped fire lines into Paradise,CA. Even going through the 2007 fires in San Diego is apparent to us that people are still not as informed on how to prepare before a disaster strikes. It breaks my heart hearing these stories and the hearing "I wish we would have done this", or " I wish we would have been prepared", or the worst is " We never thought it would happen to us".

I have been involved with Home Inventories in the San Diego area and we have expanded nationwide. I feel this is so important yet "Why are we not Prepared?"

So, I have been involved with CYA for over a year now and every time I turn on the TV and see all the disasters in America alone, I think to myself if they only had this beforehand!
