East Norwich, NY is a small town, just south of Oyster Bay and has plenty of charm and full of history. It is believed that George Washington stopped here during his journey to Long Island. East Norwich is about two miles south of Oyster Bay and north and east of Muttontown and Brookville, and west of Oyster Bay Cove. It is so small that if you blink you'll miss it. Though small, it does not lack the convenience of a big town.

The oldest part of town just south of Route 25A is loaded with old colonial homes. Two old buildings from East Norwich are relocated to Old Bethpage Restoration (an historic colonial village) - the Powell House and the Layton General Store. The Powell House used to belong to the Downing family. At some point in the olden days, the Downing family used to own properties from Route 106 westward to Martin Viette Nursery. One of the oldest homes in town is the Downing's home situated behind the Patio.com store.

East Norwich, NY should not be confused with Norwich, Connecticut. I know there is also an East Norwich in England because years ago, delegates from that town came here to visit and residents planted daffodils along Route 106 to celebrate spring at that time. There is a beautification committee that takes care of the little garden where the welcome sign is and the entrance to Norwich Green and Radcliff Drive.

Norwich Green, the development behind Rothman's was started in the 1950's with mostly capes and ranches. Then Radcliff Drive development followed next and then the Pine Hollow development behind the Pine Hollow shopping center where Stop & Shop is further down the road on Route 106. In the 70's, The Hollows on Route 25A, now million dollar homes, were developed. Nowadays, the town has seen so many changes with residents changing the look of the developments.

East Norwich, NY is very convenient to major highways - Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway are only minutes to East Norwich, within 5 miles. East Norwich is a short driving distance to two railroad stations, the Oyster Bay Line and the Syosset Line. You also have an option of taking the LIRR from the Hicksville station where there are more trains available coming both from the North and South part of Long Island. Hicksville is about 6 miles from East Norwich.

The Village of Laurel Hollow in the township of Oyster Bay, NY lies between Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay Cove. It is a beautiful village with tall trees and magnificent homes on big acreage. Laurel Hollow is mostly hilly with an abundance of specimen trees and understory of mountain laurel hence the name.

The proximity of Laurel Hollow to the water makes water sport the main recreational activity. Years ago, when winter in this area was so cold, I used to take my kids ice skating on the pond next to St. John's Episcopal Church on Route 25A. My kids also loved to go to the Fish Hatchery across the street from the Cold Spring Laboratory, a world class scientific laboratory.

The school district is partly Oyster Bay and partly Cold Spring Harbor. The post office is serviced by Oyster Bay 11771, Syosset 11791 or Cold Spring Harbor 11724. Laurel Hollow is strictly a residential community. There is no business establishment in the village. People shop in nearby towns, either in Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset or Huntington.

The most well known resident was Louis Comfort Tiffany who built Laurelton Hall. Louis C. Tiffany is credited with the stained glass windows, Tiffany lamp and iridescent Tiffany vases.

THANKSGIVING DINNER - THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL FAMILY MEALS

This is my 40^th year of celebrating Thanksgiving with my family in the United States. It started after I got married to an American and I had Thanksgiving dinner with his mother and my brother who got a free turkey from his office. Since my brother was a bachelor, he gave me the turkey to cook. We lived in New York City at that time. From that small beginning, my family grew. My other brother came from abroad, then my younger brother followed him. Then they all got married and have their children.

For the first 30 years, I cooked the Thanksgiving dinner and we had it at my home. The first year, we had it at my apartment on E. 86^th St. in New York. Then we moved to Long Island the following year. My brother would meet my husband at Penn Station and handed him the turkey on Tuesday and then I cooked it on Thursday. We had this ritual for at least ten years until he changed jobs and the free turkey stopped. Then I started buying the turkey myself. Our family slowly got bigger and the turkey got bigger every year.

When we bought our home 30 years ago, we had a small dining room and as the family grew in numbers, we were able to squeeze twelve people comfortably in the dining room. At some point, we devised a makeshift dining table out of the coffee table in the living room for the kids. After that year, we decided to change the layout of the house, made the dining room bigger and the living room smaller. When the kids were small, we had phone books stacked on their chairs so they could reach the table and ate with us. As the family grew, we used two tables and a card table joined together to form a long banquet table. Luckily I had this huge white tablecloth that I inherited from my in-laws. My husband told me his grandmother had sit-down dinner for 28 people. We had 23 people the last time I did thanksgiving dinner. Once they got seated, nobody moved till after dessert. I sat near the kitchen door so I would be able to get up if we needed something.

I hosted thanksgiving dinner for 30 years until one of my brothers got very sick and could not drive anymore so we started going to my other brother's house in New Jersey for thanksgiving. Twice, we went to California to be with my sons who moved there eight years ago. Now that my stepdaughter has her own family, we sometimes go to her place for thanksgiving. Today, we went to Connecticut to my stepdaughter's house.

While the thanksgiving dinner was at my home, it took a whole week of preparation to get everything done and ready - cleaned the house, got out all the china, glasses and silverware, white tablecloths and white napkins pressed and all the food cooked. It was hard work lovingly attended and done to almost perfection for my family. The menu was the same every year and everyone raved about it especially the chestnut stuffing.

We ate, laughed, and talked all at the same time. My stepdaughter used to bring her boyfriend and we always made a bet if he would be back the following year. The one who did, she married. Nobody could take in our boisterous family. We had so much fun. We have accumulated lots of memories all the years. My family and my brothers' family had a terrific time together. We always look forward to this get together.

Charles Wang, former CEO of Computer Associates have huge property in Cove Neck. So does his neighbor, Charles Dolan, CEO of Cablevision. Mr. & Mrs. Charles Dolan used to celebrate their 4th of July wedding anniversary with a firework to be enjoyed by people in the area.

For several years, one day in the summer the late Fritz Coudert III and his wife Marge, played host to several hundred kids from Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in New York for a day of outing at his home in Cove Neck. The Couderts also hosted the Annual "Wassail Party" during the Christmas season for the benefit of the Doubleday-Babcock Senior Center. Mrs. Francis Storrs who owns a big house with a big ballroom in Cove Neck lend her home to some organizations to do fundraising events.
