Climate
Langford's climate is influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, topography and latitude. Langford enjoys warm and dry summers, and mild, wet winters resulting in a frost-free season of approximately 202 days ( Environment Canada). Lying in the rain-shadow of the Olympic Mountains, Langford receives less precipitation, approximately 620 mm. per year, than Vancouver (annual average of 1070 mm.)(Environment Canada). The Highlands

The Highlands is a stunningly beautiful rural residential area just northwest of Victoria British Columbia Canada on the Saanich Peninsula. It's blessed with an exceptional abundance of scenic beauty, native plant and animal life, gorgeous lakes and public parkland. It is in the Greater Victoria region of Vancouver Island, bordering on the eastern shore of Finlayson Arm.

Highlands, with a population of only 2130 is one of the West Shore municipalities of Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, and View Royal, located to the west of Victoria. This region is known as the Western Communities, or West Shore, and stretches from Esquimalt Harbour to Rocky Point, along the shoreline of Juan de Fuca Strait.

In the afterglow of goodwill that followed Victoria's hosting of the 1994 Commonwealth Games, local and provincial governments, as well as private companies, joined together to create the Commonwealth Nature Legacy. The grand purpose of the project is to further protect the remaining natural spaces that surround the ever-expanding city.

Gowlland Tod Provincial Park in the Highlands protects a significant part of the Gowlland Range, one of the last remaining natural areas in Greater Victoria, and a portion of the natural shoreline and uplands in Tod Inlet, which adjoins the Saanich Inlet south of Brentwood Bay near Butchart Gardens. Included in this park are representative examples of the rare, dry coastal Douglas fir habitat that features old-growth forest, wildflowers, and stands of arbutus and manzanita. Old mining and logging roads in the park now serve as hiking trails.

A treasure in the Highlands is the historic Caleb Pike Homestead at 1589 Millstream Road. Caleb Pike was a farmer who arrived in 1850 to work for the Hudson's Bay Company. He established this first homestead in the Highlands - constructed of handhewn logs - and a sheep and cattle ranch in 1878. Caleb Pike died in 1888, and his restored log homestead is now a popular heritage site, used today as a community meeting place.

Metchosin, British Columbia

Metchosin is located on the southern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, a quick twenty minute drive from the capital city Victoria. It has a population of just under 5,000 on approximately 30 square miles of rural farmland and second-growth forests, bordered by the Strait of Juan de Fuca on its southern side.

Metchosin is a rural community of wide open spaces, pastoral countryside and bountiful farmland and was first inhabited by Coast Salish peoples. Metchosin, or Smets-shosin as it is called in the Native Coast Salish language, was incorporated in 1984.

The heart of Metchosin is at the Village Centre, where Happy Valley Road and Metchosin Road intersect and a few stores, a restaurant and a school are located.

Metchosin is one of the West Shore municipalities of Langford, Colwood, View Royal and the Highlands, located to the west of Victoria. This region is known as the Western Communities, or West Shore, and stretches from Esquimalt Harbour to Rocky Point, along the shoreline of Juan de Fuca Strait.

The District of Metchosin is a nature lover's paradise with miles of pristine hiking trails, beautiful pebble beaches, and marsh-like areas for for bird watching. Native petroglyphs can be found in East Sooke Park and local marinas have docking sites for pleasure sailing and fishing boats. Also hike or bike the famous Galloping Goose Trail which starts in Victoria and continues through Colwood and Langford to Metchosin and on to Sooke and Leechtown. Witty's Lagoon is a much studied wetland area and a unique ecosystem that is a tourist draw in all seasons.

A number of artists, carvers, potters and other artisans reside in the area. There is a strong sense of community, in this small, rural village, serviced by small-business facilities.

Metchosin is home of Pearson College, one of the United World Colleges, and the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts.

View Royal, British Columbia

View Royal is a town in Greater Victoria and a part of the Capital Regional District of British Columbia, Canada. View Royal has a population of 8375 residents and was incorporated as a municipality in December 1988. View Royal is one of the West Shore municipalities of Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, and the Highlands, located to the west of Victoria. This region is known as the Western Communities, or West Shore, and stretches from Esquimalt Harbour to Rocky Point, along the shoreline of Juan de Fuca Strait.

View Royal primarily overlooks Portage Inlet on the Esquimalt Harbour. Bordered on the south by the Esquimalt Harbour, on the west by Colwood on the north-west by Langford, on the north by Highlands, on the north-east by Saanich, on the east by Esquimalt and the Esquimalt Nation reservation. The Gorge Waterway in Victoria is a meandering waterway that leads from Victoria's upper harbour through a landscaped urban environment, before finally widening into Portage Inlet in View Royal. A daily tidal surge occasionally creates near-whitewater conditions in the narrowest passages, a thrill that kayakers will particularly enjoy.

View Royal has a rich history that is closely linked to the entire region. It was originally settled by Dr. John Helmcken when he purchased 640 acres of farmland from the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1850's. Modern -day View Royal is now predominantly a residential area. Several historic sites can be found in View Royal including the oldest continuously operating pub in the province of British Columbia, the Six Mile Pub founded in 1855. The Esquimalt First Nation has occupied View Royal for time immemorial.

Several changes have gone on in View Royal in recent years, including the move by Great Canadian Casinos into a large complex on the Old Island Highway, with View Royal and the adjacent municipalities receiving a percentage of the profits in a contractual agreement for the next 20 years.
