The self-proclaimed "Gate City" Nashua lies just north of the Massachusetts border and follows the western bank of the Merrimack River. New Hampshire's second-largest city has twice been named "Money' magazine's "Best Place to Live in America," and is the only city in the country ever to win this honortwice. A low crime rate also recently found Nashua ranked as the 27th safest city in the entire United States. Low unemployment coupled with excellent schools and up-to-date healthcare facilities were all reasons cited for this ranking in 1987 and 1997. These and many other great features make this city of 83,000 an excellent community in which to live and work.

The village of Nashua was an early textile center. By 1836, Nashua Corporation had built three cotton mills and was producing 9.3 million yards of cotton cloth annually on 710 looms. The city of Nashua was chartered in 1852, and before the Civil War, railroad lines crossed the city with 56 trains entering and departing daily. After World War 11, the textile mills moved south and the city gradually developed a diversified industry, particularly high technology and retail.

Since a commercial development boom in the 1980's, the city has served as a shopping mecca with several malls and plazas for those fleeing Massachusetts sales taxes. Not to be outdone, downtown Nashua hosts several seasonal festivals and parties, a myriad of activities from evening concerts at Greeley Park to parades and shows all over the city. Ethnic restaurants and posh specialty gift shops have made the downtown area a popular destination year-round, in addition to an extensive retail industry; the city also hosts several major high-tech companies such as Compaq Computer Corporation, Oracle, and Sanders, a Lockheed-Martin Company.

Recreation is not overlooked in this small city, and there are ample outlets for many different activities. Mine Falls Park, a 300-acre area in the geographic center of the city, offers trails for hiking, running, biking, and cross-country skiing. Athletic fields are also available for soccer and baseball. Greeley Park, a 126-acre tract between Concord and Manchester Streets, offers a playground, tennis courts, an outdoor band shell for summer concerts, and picnic facilities.

The city is also home to one of two New Hampshire professional baseball teams, the Nashua Pride. In 1998, the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball brought the unaffiliated Nashua Pride to Holman Stadium. Future Brooklyn Dodger stars Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe played at Holman in 1946 on the first integrated baseball team in the U.S. Holman Stadium is also host for numerous high school and youth sports events, as well as for the annual July 4 fireworks display, always among the area's largest.

History is alive in Nashua with an active historical society and several buildings which have been named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Hunt Memorial Building, once the city library is a brick Gothic structure and the only New Hampshire example of the work of architect Ralph Adams Cram.

The Nashua Public Library hosts community activities including lectures, club meetings, free movies, and concerts. With New Hampshire's second-largest collection of materials, the library circulates more items than any other library north of Boston.

Education is a priority for Nashua residents, and the 12 elementary schools, three junior high schools, and the high school reflect this focus, preparing graduates to go on to fine colleges anywhere. Still, many choose to pursue higher education locally in of the areas several fine colleges and vocational schools.

Housing in Nashua is diverse, with a wide array of options from single-family homes to rentals and condominiums. The elegant North End has been Nashua's most affluent area for more than a century. Well-kept Victorian homes built around the turn of the century line the edge of Concord Street near Greeley Park. The older textile mills along the Nashua River have been renovated into condominiums, popular for their proximity to downtown's Main Street. Spit Brook Road in south Nashua is home to many condominium developments, and is conveniently located close to Route 3.

Neighborhood Info

The town of Hudson NH was originally part of Dunstable, Massachusetts. Sixty years later, in 1733, Hudson was separated from the rest of the tract and renamed Nottingham.

Nottingham's name changed again in 1741, when the disputed border lands, of which Hudson was a part, were granted to New Hampshire. Two more name changes were to follow. In 1746, Nottingham changed its name to Nottingham West. Then in 1830, amid concerns of the name's similarity to the original Nottingham, Nottingham West became Hudson, New Hampshire.

Originally a small farming community; Hudson today features miles of residential neighborhoods alongside commercial and industrial development, with some small retail plazas as well as high-tech companies.

The Merrimack River has always been an important thoroughfare to the town. The Taylor's Falls Bridge, which connects Hudson with Nashua, opened as a toll bridge in 1826. A second bridge, made of iron, replaced the old covered bridge in 1881, but it had not been built to support the additional weight of trolleys.

Electric trolleys, which were introduced in 1909, ran from Nashua to the seacoast and needed an efficient point for crossing over the Merrimack River. In 1910, a third structure, made of concrete, was built. ironically, it outlasted the trolleys that it was designed to accommodate. Finally, in 1974, a fourth bridge was placed at Taylor's Falls, and today oldtimers consider that bridge a reminder of the town's heritage.

Farming and logging were the main pursuits before the turn of the century.

Many of Hudson's historic buildings are the legacy of Dr. Alfred Hills. A New York City surgeon who summered in Hudson, Dr. Hills built the Hills Memorial Library and the Alvirne Chapel in 1909 in memory of his wife. He also left his home, Alvirne, to the Hudson Historical Society and bequeathed funds and 180 acres of land to build a high school. Today, Alvirne High School serves both Hudson and neighboring Litchfield and is well known across the region for its vocational center and accompanying agricultural and horticultural programs.

Now home to 20,000 residents, Hudson's retail development has also grown over the past several years, and the town boasts a number of businesses, including Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, Teledyne, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, and Telegraph Publishing.

There is a town beach on Robinson Pond, as well as a number of parks and playgrounds, including Ottarnic Pond, Merrifield Park, Merrill Park, and the Musquash Conservation Area, which offers walking trails. Hudson also features tennis courts and two golf courses, along with a miniature golf course and a driving range.

A tradition since 1993, the Nashua Winter Holiday stroll takes place on the Saturday evening following Thanksgiving.

This year's them, "Traditions of the Season" was selected to honor the abundant and diverse customs celebrated by the residents of New Hampshire.

Much of Nashua's quaint, historic downtown is closed to traffic for the evening, welcoming nearly 30,000 people from all across New England, who participate in the tradition that starts off with a candelit walk from City Hall up to Library Hill, where the city's Christmas tree is lit for the first time.

Strollers wander up and down the streets sampling over 50 different artistic and cultural performances including dancing, theatre, music and the carving of the ice sculptures.

One can sample offerings from the street vendors, dine in downtown's fine restaurants and do holiday shopping at the many unique boutiques, shops and specialty stores that line the main street and sidestreets of downtown Nashua, many of which remain open late for the festivities.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, the Winter Holiday Stroll also features a collection at City Hall where strollers can drop off items such as canned goods, disposable diapers and new, unwrapped toys for local charitable organizations.

The Beaver Brook Association, in Hollis, New Hampshire, exists to promote the understanding of interrelationships in the natural world, and to encourage conservation of natural resources through education and land stewardship.

The annual Fall Festival features many activities for the entire family... children's music and stories, puppet shows, live music, baked goods and fresh cider, guided trail hikes, beautiful gardens and live animal presentations.

Beaver Brook offers programs throughout the year in every season, including summer youth programs for children.

The Maple Hill Gardens are maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers.

The focal point of the fall festival is an art and photography exhibit at the Maple Hill Farm. Over a hundred regional artists and photographers exhibit their work, and most is for sale to the public.

Hollis, New Hampshire "Old Home Days" parade and festival - the perfect day in New England!

One of the most popular traditions in Hollis, New Hampshire is Old Home Days, which is held on a weekend during September.

There is often an Old Home Day Dance the Friday night before that is very popular with students on Nichols Field. There are often carnival rides and attractions set up the night of the dance in preparation for the following day.

On Old Home Day itself, there are dozens of booths and pavilions set up like traditional New England fairs, including old-fashioned games, animal demonstrations, live music, and plenty of food. Many of the pavilions are sponsored by local organizations, schools, and teams. Weather permitting, there are often hot air balloon rides and an evening "balloon glow" where the balloons are grounded and lit up from the inside. The day concludes with a fireworks show.

Art in the Park

For almost 60 years, the annual Greeley Park Art Show takes place in Greeley Park every August.

Sponsored by the Nashua Area Artists Association, it is filled with drawing, photographs and art renderings of all kinds. Artists come from as far away as the Boston area, Rhode Island and Laconia. Generally more than 65 artists participate in the annual event.

Not only is it a friendly competition, the art is also for sale.

Although it is a competition, and judges are brought in from other towns and art organizations, it is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in the park, where v isitors are treated to classical and jazz music.
