Wags and I have been meaning to get here and then some good friends surprised us with a gift certificate and our visit got pushed to the top of the to do list!! We can't believe it took so long for us to share this gem with you!

Their slogan is "Dining Enriched with Nature." Executive Chef Mark F. Henry spent some time with us chatting about this restaurant and one soon to be very close to our resorts! Tree Tops is a 20 minute ride from the Donegal turnpike exit. Mark's goal is to provide the consumer with "unique organic cuisine." Take a peak at our slide show. Excellent food! (Note to the ladies, wear flats as the walk way is shale.)

So you are saying where is it and why is it there? Great history story! We are certain that many of our readers have toured Frank Lloyd Wright's homes, Falling Water or Kentuck Knob. They are true treasures in the midst of our Laurel Highlands! We are also certain that many of you are NOT aware that there are three other homes at Polymath Park Resort that have his signature and influence!

"Polymath Park was the brain child of Peter Berndtson's. He was an apprentice under Frank Lloyd Wright back in the 50's. This 125 acre parcel then named Treetops and Mountain Circles was to have 24 houses each set within a 300 foot circular clearing within the woods. From "Bing" the development would have looked like a grape vine! Only two homes were ever built.

They are the Balter House a 1964 custom stone and redwood vacation home. Then in 1965 the Blum House was completed. It is another masterpiece of Peter Berndtson. The natural surroundings, glass walls, and windows provide a long view of the 20 acre meadow, reflecting pond, and our Laurel Highlands. As promised there is also the The Duncan House which is a 1957 Usonian designed by Frank Lloyd Wright which was saved by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, moved and rebuilt at the park in 2007." Arts and Cultural Celebration Hidden Valley, PA

Here's a first for our resorts! Hidden Valley has teamed up with Touchstone Center for Crafts to bring us this celebration. According to the web site "November 7 and 8 will feature interactive art demonstrations, arts and fine crafts exhibitors, children's workshops, live music, and great food."

What makes this different than a regular "craft show" is the input from Touchstone Center for Crafts. When originally founded in 1972 their mission was to ‘foster interest in the preservation of traditional mountain crafts." That's where the demonstrations including metal working, blacksmithing, pottery, and painting come into the event. They have expanded their class offerings to include more modern arts and crafts. Check out their class schedules.

Kelly, a good friend of ours is very excited to be demonstrating and hopefully selling her hand made glass bead jewelry. Here's a picture of her working the glass! Check out the Hidden Valley site for a list of artists and crafters.

This should be an awesome weekend to enjoy the mountain activities especially with the Steelers playing on Monday! There will be chairlift, pony, and horse-drawn wagon rides for all to enjoy! Food wise you'll have a great selection! The open fire pit will offer smoked beef brisket, Mountain Jambalaya, oyster stew, grilled bourbon barbecue salmon and barbequed turkey legs.

With active listings at 96 for Hidden Valley and 94 for Seven Springs inventory continues to set record highs. The stats we watch indicate this trend will continue at least through next year. Huston's Haunted Hollow

One of our dear friends is a devoted fan of this Halloween tradition. We never really considered making an evening of this adventure until we were challenged to do so! The plan was met at 6:30 for a quick dinner, drive out, get in line, while he purchased tickets!

The line was Disney style with everyone following the serpentine ropes. We arrived around 7:30 and meandered for at least 30 minutes until we got to the front gate. Fifty foot towering pines earily cast shadows while swaying back and forth over the high wooden fence. No, there are NO peep holes to give us any indication of what's yet to come on the other side. Our only clues are the shouts and screams of those that have gone before us.

There are three parts to this evening. You begin making your way through the haunted house, and then you're loaded into a hay wagon and taken into the dark woods where you are dropped off for a stroll through the haunted woods. If you make it though, the hay wagon will pick you up and again take you to the corn field where you get to find your way back to base camp. Of course there are strict directions to follow and the object is to get your heart pounding! Safe back at base camp you'll find a band, food, drinks, and of course survivors!

It was an enjoyable evening for all of the senses! Certainly not recommended for the little ones or people with heart conditions! What we found most interesting is the ingenuity of the owners that turned part of the farm into a cash cow. We heard that there are roughly 60,000 visitors through that gate every October. They have one more weekend to go, try it out and see what you think!

Welcome Somerset Trust

For the locals on the Seven Springs side the "old post office" located across from the ICV Trail has had its share of residents. Ski and sandwich shops never seemed to be able to make a go of their business models there. Now we are very excited to WELCOME locally owned, Somerset Trust as our newest mountain neighbor!

We have great faith that they will be here for a very long time. For over a century they've been serving Somerset County. They currently have 13 offices along with 49 ATM's. You'll find them in Somerset, Cambria, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties! Here's their story!

September 2, 1889 the doors were open to the First National Bank of Somerset. During it's first year of operation it showed earnings of $4,002.12 Two years later their first dividend was declared and every year there after too!

In 1900 Somerset Trust Company was founded as a Pennsylvania chartered bank. This allowed them to undertake fiduciary and bonding activities which at the time national banks were generally prohibited. In 1953 the two banks merged as regulations and laws had changed.

Two families have lead with steady hands through challenging times including the great depression, double digit interest rates, and the current can of worms! Edward, George, John, and Lucy Scull along with Ernest Cook (married to Lucy), George S., and now George Henry Cook have provided steadfast leadership. Henry is the fifth generation of his family to head up this institution.

Henry's official title is President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. He's not one for pomp and circumstance though and has been out with several employees meeting the neighbors and inviting folks to the local chamber mixer. Here he is with Abe visiting the Prudential Preferred Realty office!

Home Owner Associations

No matter where you go, eventually, if you are buying or selling real estate you will come face to face with a Home Owner Association, (HOA). According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, they are "legal entities created by a real estate developer for the purpose of developing, managing, and selling a development of homes..."

Before buying you may want to stop by and visit with the people who coordinate and run the day to day activities of the association you may soon belong too. We suggest this meeting because this important relationship will begin once you sign the deed and ends ONLY when you sell!!

Some fees that are included are heating costs, grass cutting, snow removal, insurance for the building, maintenance of the building, common area upkeep, security, shuttle service, the list varies and goes on! Make sure you compare and feel comfortable with the monthly fees BEFORE signing an agreement!! These fees are not included in your mortgage payment!

Hidden Valley has one Master Association and Four Condominium Associations. You may belong to one or two of them depending upon the type of property you purchase. They just revamped their Association web site and have a home owner only side that's pass word protected. Eventually we believe you will be able to see the bylaws and declarations posted here!

Seven Springs properties offer multiple associations. The Mountain Villas and Southwind only have Master Associations. Swiss Mountain has a Master Association and one Condo Association. The Villages have a Master Association and Five Condo Associations.

The Uniform Condominium Act of Pennsylvania was designed to protect you. So please make sure you review the Certificate of Resale and at least scan through the declaration, bylaws, rules and regulations of the association when you decide to buy!

Donegal, PA Design Workshop

This month the Donegal Community Design Workshop was held at the local community center. The 24 page DRAFT crafted from the last charette was shared with those of us who attended. This Draft is a large PDF with tons of pictures so if you are linking to it go grab a cup of coffee! Anyway if you exit 91 off of the PA turnpike to partake in any of the resorts activities or to visit any part of the Laurel Highlands YOU should REVIEW the draft.

We keep sharing what is happening at the local community levels that 10 to 20 years from NOW will be making huge impacts on our visitors impressions of areas. What type of community will we grow up to be?

The attendees at the workshop were given the opportunity to select a table topic from six or seven hot issues ranging from a visitors center to signage. One of our personal and professional passions is seeing a viable Visitors Center to WELCOME all of the guests that come through our GATEWAY TO THE LAUREL HIGHALNDS. Pay special attention to pages 12 through 14 as there are aerial photos highlighting areas of great interest.

The Donegal Township web site list important contacts for anyone considering a business opportunity. Remember we have an incredible commercial offering right along Rt 31 across from the Family Dollar Store. It has over 6,000 square feet of space to work with, a flat parking lot, new roof.... Wildhorse Meadows, Steamboat Springs CO

As resort and second home REALTORS anytime we get to visit another unique community development we are indeed excited to spread the word. The Trailhead Lodge at Wildhorse Meadows in Steamboat Springs, CO is truly an exceptional opportunity! It is the ONLY residential resort community within Steamboat Springs. We spent four jammed packed days checking out the place just for you (OK, it was a real vacation!)!

The only mistake we made was flying into the Denver airport INSTEAD of into HAYDEN. There is a driving time difference of about 3 hours in the summer, which most likely would be much longer during ski season! The Hayden airport is small but services major airlines with connecting services and non-stop flights to NINE major cities.

Kerry Shea, Marketing Director, of Resort Ventures West (the development company) was our host and offered multiple suggestions for getting the most out of our short time visiting. We were most impressed with their video presentation of the community including their vision of the completed project. Condos, town homes, and single family lots (sold out), make up this rare new construction community within Steamboat Springs. This ski town even has its own hospital!

Some of the unique features of this community include the ONLY Gondola to the slopes within a residential community, lap and swimming pool area to be open this year, building and garage have sprinkler system and elevator, new city tennis courts indoors and out are located within walking distance. The Strings Music Festival built their 540 seat facility across from the Community Free Parking lot which is a short walk from Wildhorse Meadows. Pittsburgh Symphony goers who follow Concertmaster Andrés Cárdenes may want to buy in now as he will soon be calling Steamboat home and working with Strings! Awesome city planning (hope Donegal can follow this lead) with sidewalks, visual continuity for stores, restaurants, and visitors.

During our short stay we were able to attend the Leahy Canadian family of musicians performance at the Strings Festival, biked 8 miles on their great bike trail, (with no gears), toured Fishcreek Falls, the Botanical Gardens, took a dip into Strawberry Park Hot Springs, attended the Arts Festival, enjoyed our first Balloon Rodeo and a real Pro Rodeo, watched the tubers floating down the Yampa River, Wags shot sporting clays at the Three Quarter Circles Ranch, and we both tried out several local eateries (high marks for them all). We were there during the "OFF Season" but can only imaging Steamboat Springs bustling even more during the famous "Champagne Powder" months! Ohiopyle State Park, PA

The Tribune-Review Local last month had a very interesting article on Ohiopyle's history and future. We have long loved the natural resources and beauty offered within Ohiopyle State Park. One of our first dates was hiking to Cucumber Falls.

The Park offers a little over 19,000 acres with the main attraction being the Youghiogheny River Gorge. White water enthusiasts from all over the world have taken the challenge of the 14 miles of class I through IV rapids that this river offers. Kayakers, rafters fishermen, water lovers there is a section of the river just waiting for your visit!

Speaking of visits this park draws 1.5 MILLION visitors every year. According to the Trib article there are ONLY "76 YEAR ROUND REISDENTS" that call Ohiopyle home. If you've been following our Blog posts you'll recall that the Laurel Highlands area is one of seven areas that have been targeted by the state to ensure the natural environment is protected while substantially growing the tourism industry.

Water isn't the only draw that brings visitors here! There are 79 miles of hiking trails, 13.2 miles of biking trails including being a part of the Great Allegheny Passage and 9.4 miles of horseback riding trails. Let's not forget that this is a four season recreation facility with hunting, cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, camping, and wildlife watching.

Infrastructure is in dire need of repair. With the boroughs budget running between 30-35 thousand a year the "to-do list" just keeps growing. Water, sewage, road maintenance are just a few of the projects. Enter DCNR with the targeted tourism growth plan. Fix ups are in the works but will take time. Be forewarned that if you're coming up on a weekend you may not find parking!

G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh? Yes, Pittsburgh! According to Anne McGinn of Fox News,' White House Views, when this group last meet in London this past spring they realized that many of them would be in the country for the United Nations General Assembly meeting. That's when President Obama offer to host the meeting.

Here's the reason that was given as to "WHY" Pittsburgh. "it's an area that has seen its share of economic woes in the past, but because of foresight and investment is now renewed, giving birth to renewed industries that are creating the jobs of the future," shared Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. "And I think the president believes it'd be a good place to highlight some of that stuff."

Back in 1999 is when the G20 originated. In September finance ministers and central bank governors from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA, and the European Union will be welcomed by our three rivers. Their goal is to bring together industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy. That means Financing and their agenda has got to be jammed packed!!

The Huffington Post summed up what we believe are many non-locals perceptions of our city, "steel, sports, smoke, and smog." We welcome the world to Pittsburgh and know that you will be very impressed with our turn around process.

Back at Hidden Valley under the new Buncher Ownership are summer camps! Valley Day Adventure Camps and the Junior Golf Camps are two choices that will give you some free time this summer. What are the next steps for Donegal??

If you recall (or scroll down far enough) over the past few years there has been an out reach to the community to assist in improving the Rt 31 corridor. For branding purposes and as locals we refer to this Rt as the "Gateway to the Laurel Highlands."

This Tuesday (July 7) at the Donegal Community Center beginning at 7 p.m. a review will be offered from the suggestions obtained during the public meeting last December. Concepts of the corridor enhancements will be available for inspection. The proposed and greatly needed Visitor Center will also be a focus of the draft report.

HERE IS ONE MORE OPPROTUNITY FOR YOU TO VOICE YOUR THOUGHTS!! Please help to make Donegal a better place to live, work, play, and VISIT!! Attendees will be asked to list priorities including:

Emerald Ash Borer Beetle

They are more commonly referred to as EAB. Why are we writing about them? Have you seen the billboards that say, "I promise not to move firewood?" They started appearing locally a few months back and made us wonder, "What's behind that unusual message?"

Shortly after that we started to notice purple hanging boxes in the trees. Turns out they are traps set only in Ash trees to determine if the EAB is here. In fact there's one on County Line road as you're headed up to Seven Springs on the right and several on Rt 31.

We owe all of this promotional marketing to the Emerald Ash Borer. In 2002 Michigan residents first identified this vibrant green beetle. Over 700 million dead trees later, (in Michigan ALONE) the fight to contain this pest wages on. Destroying Ash trees in twelve other states, Ontario, and Quebec, the EAB beetle has now been found in Westmoreland County.

Here's their MO. Adults lay their eggs on the Ash tree BARK from mid-May through mid August. Eggs hatch into larvae and tunnel into the tree. The larvae live UNDER the bark and create S-shaped paths. This stage is where the damage is done. Their feeding disrupts the water flow from the roots to the crown and within a year to four the tree is dead. THERE IS NO CURE.

Getting back to the billboards the beetles are transferred from one area to another by moving infected firewood. ALWAYS use LOCAL FIREWOOD to help stop the spread of the EAB. Ash trees have been popular for landscaping as they grow quickly and can be found throughout the grounds at BOTH Hidden Valley and Seven Springs. To identify an ash tree look at the leaves. This site shows the different types of Ash trees. If you begin to notice the crown of your trees thinning out take a closer look at your bark!! PLEASE DON'T MOVE FIREWOOD!

HELP Laurel Hill Creek PA

Fishermen friends have shared stories about the water running thigh high, not anymore. American Rivers (a Washington DC non profit) has listed this Pennsylvania treasure a seven out of ten in "America's Most Endangered Rivers in 2009." This year's edition highlights missing safeguards that they feel are necessary to protect this creek from "excessive water withdrawals for development and energy extraction."

According to River Facts, Laurel Hill Creek is "16.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II+ section." The creek is a tributary of the Youghiogheny River. Here's a map of how it runs through Laurel Hill State Park. (Make sure you increase the size!)

According to an article in the Tribune Democrat, before ‘09 is over, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will determine if this watershed "deserves a "critical" label that would guide future decisions on how much of its water can be consumed." Timely... considering there are currently three pending tap in applications. Two are renewals for Somerset Boro and Seven Springs.

In fact, Monday night, June 22^nd, at the Bakersville Fire Hall, there will be a public hearing on the third permit application for Cooper Springs, a water bottling company. They would like to draw 108,000 gallons daily from Laurel Hill Creek. DEP has had this application since June 2008. In March, Pennsylvania's new State Water Plan was signed.
