What are the next steps for Donegal?? If you recall (or scroll down far enough) over the past few years there has been an out reach to the community to assist in improving the Rt 31 corridor. For branding purposes and as locals we refer to this Rt as the "Gateway to the Laurel Highlands." This Tuesday (July 7) at the Donegal Community Center beginning at 7 p.m. a review will be offered from the suggestions obtained during the public meeting last December. They are more commonly referred to as EAB. Why are we writing about them? Have you seen the billboards that say, "I promise not to move firewood?" They started appearing locally a few months back and made us wonder, "What's behind that unusual message?" Shortly after that we started to notice purple hanging boxes in the trees. American Rivers (a Washington DC non profit) has listed this Pennsylvania treasure a seven out of ten in "America's Most Endangered Rivers in 2009." This year's edition highlights missing safeguards that they feel are necessary to protect this creek from "excessive water withdrawals for development and energy extraction." Given this economy we decided to revisit where our resort home owners reside full time. Checking on their area of primary residence give us (and you), insight into the stability of their livelihood and likeliness of needing to sell a second home. Pennsylvania still lays claim to almost 80% of the home owners at both Hidden Valley and Seven Springs. The areas surrounding Pittsburgh came in with the most concentrated numbers. One of the sessions we had while attending the Resort and Second Home Symposium in Naples Fl included info on these new guidelines. Fannie and Freddie Mac loans NOW REQUIRE a new form for appraisers to complete. It's called the Market Conditions Addendum or "1004MC." It has been designed to "enhance the transparency of the market trends and conditions conclusions made by the appraiser." Sorry, it's NOT an April Fools Joke. It's time to face the fact. The old work environment of days past, where families, not just individuals, worked their entire lives at the resort, those days are gone. Where you could walk down any hall way, sit in any bar stool or dining room chair, and greet employees by their first name and they knew you, your family, and what you liked. Traveling west from Somerset, PA this route is a main artery leading to the turn onto Trent Road for Seven Springs and to Hidden Valley's front door step! Wednesdays meeting (March 25th) is the second Town Hall session to be held concerning this corridor. Click here for the overview of the study. Basically the study concentrated on the ten mile stretch of 31 from Somerset Boro to the County boundary (right before Fern Mountain, after Hidden Valley).
