Have you ever wanted to climb in the Garden of the Gods?

Did you know that you have to register with the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center before you can climb? But if you neglect to do so - you can be find by the park rangers. (And yes - they ARE out there...)

Once you're registerd - which only takes a few minutes (Honestly!) includes reading over the current rules (pay attention - there are always areas that are Off limits) and regulations and filling out a short form. It's all done to be sure that you know what you're doing!

Technical Climbing is permitted on established routes, in group of two or more - NO single climbing! (For safety purposes). Proper climbing equipment is MANDATORY and the use of eco-chalk is recommended/encouraged.

All other climbing or rock scrambling is ILLEGAL.

While this may sound harsh- it's done - once again - for your safety. Tragic accidents have happened...and they are just trying to prevent them as much as possible. So be safe - and enjoy!

Not sure what I'm talking about? Better ask your kids! Most will be able to tell you - to the minute - how much longer it'll be till Christmas! (Yes - today IS the 4th....and if you celebrate Christmas - that leaves you 20 days to do whatever it is you have left to do....be it shop, decorate, plan, mail cards etc.)

If you have kids - you know that December 24th is the LONGEST day for them...it stretches, like elastic. Each minute lasts several hours and it's still broad daylight! If you are looking for something to keep your kids occupied and to stop them from asking for the 2789th time if Santa is on his way....check out NORAD's Santa Tracker.

Norad uses a radar system called the North Warning System, to track Santa's route on Christmas Eve. In addition, they use a "Santa Cam" to follow along, capturing images of Santa on his trip.

Want to check it our for yourself? See the NORAD/Santa site, and count down with your kids! (You can even add a gadget to Google and track Santa from there...)

Read another great story on how the Norad/Santa connection came to be - posted by Carrie Farrel, a Veteran Santa Tracker.

I've written about the things I love about Colorado, and specifically about Colorado Springs. But maybe, I'm biased. After all, I live here. And I really love it. So I thought it'd be interesting to get an "Outsiders" point of view. Well - not really Outsider - but a Visitor's point of view. Visitor's from Germany to be exact.

My parents and my sister came for a two week visit. (My Mom had been here before, but it was the first time for my Dad and my Sister.) We took them around Colorado Springs, North to South, and East to West, including Territory Days, several Parks, Downtown and Old Colorado City. Manitou, up to Woodland Park, Cripple Creek, Eleven Mile Reservoir, Mueller State Park, Wilkinson Pass and more. When it was almost time for them to return back to Germany - I asked the question I was most curious about: What do you think of Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas? What are your pros and cons?

Here are their answers (some expected some surprising):

Pros:

The natural Beauty is stunning. The privilege of waking up to views like these is a special treat.

The city is very "green" - trees and flowers everywhere!

So much offered in one Town - from Museums, to Trails, from Events and History to quiet Areas.

The stores are amazing - you can find a much larger selection here than in Europe. (Sports gear, Craft Items, Decorative Items, Computers, Cell Phones etc)

Great "integrated" school system. (My sister is handicapped, and in Germany, that means that she attends separate schools - schools for the handicapped only. In my opinion, not the best route to go.)

Friendly and helpful people! Everyone was nice!

Great Opportunities for everyone - from schooling to employment.

Cons:

No user-friendly public transportation System, despite the city's size. (FYI: Europe's public transportation is extensive. You do not need to own a car to ‘get around'.)

The cities growth/sprawl on the East and North Side. Where are the factories and employers? (FYI: This from my Mom, who's been here twice before. European cities are very compact, due to space issues and each city has industrial areas.)

After spending two weeks here, they declared that it was one of the best vacations and that they can't wait to return for another visit. The above pros and cons were offered due to my questions, and I think it's interesting to get another opinion. Sometimes, due to seeing it every day, it's harder to pinpoint what is special about an area and what could use improvement. Overall, I think we're extremely lucky to be living in a city like this. Thanks to everyone for making this a great place - not just to visit, but to live.

The following post probably falls under all three - it's a place, you'll meet great people and you can do a variety of things. This is one of Colorado Springs' parks, fairly easy to find (not tucked away like some) and pretty big.

Cottonwood Creek Park, Colorado Springs - is located off Dublin Drive and Rangewood Drive in the North/East area of town is a popular spot for anyone age 1 to 100. There's something to do for anyone, whether you'd like to participate in a team sport, play or just hike.

If you start out on the South/West corner of the park (corner of Dublin and Rangewood) - you'll come across the roller hockey rink. It's very popular and can get crowded, specially as the evenings get warmer - but if you like to play - it offers several pick up games throughout the week. Next to it (north), you'll find large baseball diamonds - which are used by a number of recreational teams (in case you'd like to join one), as well as families, throwing the ball around for fun. A great playground - with numerous slides, climbing toys, swings and sandboxes is close by. Adventures to be had by all! (Including Adults!)

Keep walking uphill (west) and you'll come upon the pool - the indoor pool which features a water-slide and wave pool! Just beyond that are the soccer fields....a VERY popular spot! Many of the city's soccer teams use these fields. Along the creek, you'll find walking trails and a golf Frisbee course! Feel free to play at your convenience - just bring your own Frisbee, endurance and good aim!

Cottonwood Creek Park is surrounded by neighborhoods, a couple of smaller office buildings across the street and Cottonwood Creek on the north. It's easy to find, fun to use and parking is, thanks to the large lot, no problem. Looking for something to do? Let's go to the park! Specially now, that spring seems to - finally - be taking over!

It's approx. 17 miles long (round-trip) and takes about 7 hours to complete. The Gold Camp Trail is located in the South/West area, off North Cheyenne Canyon Blvd., past Helen Hunt Falls. (Another nice hiking area.) The trail is rated as a moderate hike. Just keep in mind the change of elevation and the quick change of weather in Colorado, as well as the local wildlife - come prepared! Be safe!

In the 1890's, Gold Camp Road was originally built for a narrow gauge rail road, connecting Colorado Springs to the Cripple Creek Mining District. Eventually the railroad tracks were converted to a regular road. You'll encounter several narrow tunnels along the road, one of which collapsed in 1988, requiring the road to be rerouted over it. This was the end of automobile traffic for this section. Now, the trail is great to use for hiking and biking and offers some stunning scenery along the way.

The intersection of Gold Camp Road and Old Stage Road is considered the end of the trail and turn around point, due to often active vehicle traffic on Old Stage Road.

If you hike the trail - and that part of Colorado Springs' History - I hope you'll enjoy it! Let me know how it went! We love living here and hope that by sharing a bit about this area and what it has to offer - you will too!

Located off Powers or Marksheffel and Bradley or Drennan, it's separate enough from the hustle and bustle of downtown, to make you feel as if you're out in the country.

Colorado Centre is like it's own little village - surrounded by open fields, grazing antelope, the occasional cow or horse. FYI - once the Banning Lewis development gets under way, the views might change a bit! For now tho, Colorado Centre is ‘away' from everything - Horizonview Drive being the "main strip" through this development, which offers a park and playground, a Basketball Court with Picnic tables and it's own Fire-station.

A branch of the Olympic committee used to reside "out there" as well - but their building is now up for sale/lease and the area is looking for ‘new' neighbors to occupy the space. Home prices range from $155,000 to approx. $220,000, and square footage from approx. 1,000 to 2,700, and despite it's feeling of being secluded, you're only a few minutes away from parks, schools and shopping. As for schools - Colorado Centre is being served by Widefield School District 3. Something to keep in mind - Peterson Air Force Base , Schriever Air Force Base and even <a href="http://www.carson.army.mil/" title="Colorado Springs Real Estate, Miltary, Ft. Carson and Downtown Colorado Springs.

School Information

Depending on the Area you decide to live in, your children might go to School District 12 or School District 11.
If you have children, specially small children and are new in an area, you know how hard it can be to find a babysitter - just to have a date night! Or go shopping!

If you're looking to offer something unusual for your clients - offer a "Parents Night Out". Specially if you have a number of past clients with small children. Either hire a daycare provider or babysitters you know and let the parents enjoy "time off". You could even have Client appreciation dinner with the parents only - as a group. Just a thought....

Another item to give out - a list of daycare providers you know and trust - that have openings.

All of them promote remodeling, staging and fixing up your home prior to selling it. If you watch enough of them, you can't help but wonder: Should I renovate? Remodel? Paint? Stage? Heck, obviously, something needs to be done prior to selling...but what?

If you're thinking along those lines - stop. Take a good, hard look at your home first. Pretend you're a buyer, looking at your home for the first time. If you can't - have a friend do this for you. Walk through the house, and take it room by room. That's how the "little things" we tend to overlook as we live in a home, become obvious. Is the paint chipped on the corners of the baseboards? Are there finger prints on the walls - specially around the light switches? Is the door not opening properly? And what happened to the yard? Where did the weeds come from? Has the closet always been this full? And why is it so dark in this bedroom? Has a bulb burned out?

Many of those little things are truly that - small items, that are easily and inexpensively fixed, yet have a huge impact on how a buyer might experience your home. Take care of them first and then re-evaluate your home. Maybe by now it's ready to "strut it's stuff" to potential buyers. If you still have doubts of feel the need to do more, take a look at some other items ... on the decorative side.

Items, that might cost a little more - like hardware. Kitchen and/or bathroom faucets, cabinet handles/knobs and door handles/knobs. Are they worn out or scratched in your home? Do they work? Or do they need that certain "twist" to open/close? Does the key actually lock the front door? Take a look at your hardware, and decide accordingly. This doesn't mean that you need to replace each piece, but make sure they're in working order and clean.

Whatever you decide to do - either on your own, or with the help of a professional - keep in mind - if you're getting ready to sell, this is not the time to spend a "ton" of money on your property, unless it has deferred maintenance, mechanical, functional or structural problems. If your home is in good condition (structure, systems, maintenance) then this is the time to showcase your homes good features, not change everything. Think about what attracted you to this home in the first place? The goal at the time of sale is to "break even" or get some money due to appreciation etc - not go broke due to remodeling "overboard".

Do you ever use it? If you do - you know how quickly you can shoot 20, 30, or more pictures. After all - it's just on the card. But then what? Are you going to save it on your computer forever? Or are you actually going to print some of those pictures? If that's your plan - forget printing them at home - there's a place for you to go, have some fun and save on that ink and paper while you're at it. It's called "Pixel Place" and it's located on North Academy - 6406 N. Academy to be exact.

You can print pictures from your digital media - any way you'd like them. From Wallet Size to Wall paper size, color, black and white, sepia, cards and invitations etc. You can even have them (the pictures) look like paintings or something by Andy Warhol. Your imagination sets the limits. And best of all - no more buying expensive photo paper and using up all your ink, no more standing in line, with someone "peeking" over your shoulder while you're trying to crop your pictures just right.

This place has a coffee bar, (You have got to try the "Turtle Coffee" - ask Jerry - he's the owner - for it, he'll know what you're looking for.) tables to lounge and chat, several touch screens to design your pictures, even a photo studio to take pictures right there (with Green Screen Technology - you can add yourself to a picture after it's been taken, add absent family members etc).

And once you're done, it won't break your bank! And if you're really looking to impress, give a gift (i.e. Housewarming) or just have a nice display piece - you can have your pictures framed right there. Jerry will help you find the perfect frame. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Getting ready to PCS to Ft. Carson? We thought you'd like some Info prior to getting here.

Fort Carson Mission Statement

"Fort Carson's Mountain Post Team-best opportunity in the Army for soldiers to train, leaders to lead, families to grow and people to work. We ensure the well-being and protection of the Mountain Post Team, while operating a responsive, efficient and sustainable installation, Post Mobilization Maneuver Training Center and power projection platform."

----

Ft. Carson is located on the South Side of Colorado Springs, bordered by I-25 on the East, Academy Blvd on the North and Highway 115 on the West. Its history started in 1941, when the United States declared war on Japan. The Officials in DC, in charge of selecting new sites for Training, decided upon Colorado Springs and on February 22, 1942, the local Newspapers reported for the first time, that an Installation, named "Camp Carson" - in honor of Brigadier General Christopher "Kit" Carson, would be activated in Colorado Springs. The original Camp was 60048 acres in size - some land was donated by the city, some purchased from private owners and the Department of Interior and another sizable chunk leased from the State of Colorado.

The camp was used during World War II - and had more than 125 units (with over 100 units having transferred to the post from other installations). In addition, prisoners of war were held at Camp Carson during that time - almost 9000 Italian, German and Japanese soldiers. When the Korean War started, activities increased at Camp Carson. More battalions and units were added, many from the Reserve and National Guard component.

In 1954 Camp Carson was re-designated as Fort Carson. The city of Colorado Springs cheered the news, having high hopes for the local economy. However, during the late 50's and early 60's, troop strength decreased. A base closing was a possibility, looming in the future.

By 1965, Ft. Carson's fortune had turned around. Due to increased need for troops and training, it was expanded by adding Camp "Red Devil", a year round training camp, located of Highway 115.

In the early 70's Ft. Carson's economic impact reached over $340 million annually, due to an average Military Population of 20400 and approx 2900 civilian workers. This was the same time that the military was changing into a Volunteer Force.

Growth continued and does not end today. The economic Impact of the Mountain Post on the region continues to increase and many local businesses show their appreciation for the Soldiers and their families, by offering discounts for their products and services.
