Staff Sgt. Sal Giunta Medal of Honor Recipient and Hero - 05/30/11 11:04 AM
If you get a chance to see an interview with this young Iowan, take a few minutes to listen to his story.
He is a Medal of Honor winner, and a very-self effacing young man who will do more to assist our men and women in the current conflicts than anyone else I can think of.
He is leaving the military now, and one of the reasons he cited is that he can no longer be one of his group of guys who served together.  He is now treated with "special" services....jets, private suites, etc.
I was quite impressed with his … (8 comments)

There's A New Group in Town - Check It Out - 05/28/11 09:29 PM
One of the newest groups on ActiveRain is "Cool Stuff"   According to Stewart Penn it is a casual forum to chat about interesting and unusual ideas, products and out-of-the-ordinary things.  When I joined last evening there were three posts.
I think they are up to six now. Stewart is discussing homes, cars, parking structures and this website thepartsbiz.com.  Which I must admit was pretty cool.
If you find something that is new, cool or just bizarre, this might be the best place to post it.
Meanwhile, I will just continue to watch for the newest "Cool Stuff".

Disaster Assistance in Minnesota - 05/27/11 06:11 PM
While the recent storms and tornadoes have not had a great impact on our particular area, they have in the past.  And, after watching the recent victims of the North Minneapolis tornado, I certainly counted my blessings.
If you are not aware, HUD has issued some disaster relief for quite a few counties in Minnesota recently.  If you need more information, I can direct you to my website for assistance.  It could be a really stormy summer from all indications, give the cold air that continues to hang around.
Stay safe.

Memorial Day Observances - Past and Present - 05/26/11 10:09 PM
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because family members would decorate the graves of those who had given their lives in the nation's service and the holiday was originally conceived to honor and remember those veterans.
Eventually, the holiday expanded to include all the dead in each family, and often you will see cemeteries filled with urns, plants, balloons, toys and other remembrances of those families upon the graves of their loved ones.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and many say that Memorial Day got its start in the late 1860s when women's groups in the South were … (6 comments)

Question to the Elk River Council...Will You Support the Local Community? - 05/23/11 10:06 PM
The Elk River Area Arts Alliance has made a conscious decision to support downtown restaurants and businesses at this year's ArtSoup community arts festival.
Food at the June 18 event will be limited to local fare, and these vendors have had booth fees waived and told they wouldn't have to worry about out-of-town competition.
