green living: Eco Broker vs. NAR's Green Designation - 03/29/09 03:25 PM

Recently, NAR rolled out its' Green Designation. I have not had the pleasure to attend either of these designations training. But, 15 years of living green and off the grid does give me some stomping rights. I am looking at both websites right now and I am trying to discern which of the designations is more intensive and educational.
It looks like the NAR's Green Designation is more about raising the awareness of green issues in the Real Estate industry. Students will be taught about the basics of today's green generation. The class covers how sustainability impacts smart growth, new … (32 comments)

green living: Garbage Warrior Taos New Mexico - 07/13/08 10:32 AM

Recycling the Way We Live
I watched an incredible green movie this afternoon titled, "Garbage Warrior". The movie chronicles the work of architect Michael Reynolds.  Reynolds started his dream community in the desert lands outside of Taos, New Mexico. He bought a large land tract and started to build a self sustaining community out of garbage.
The movie documents Reynolds efforts to create homes from reclaimed man made products and natural resources. The movie additional follows the trials and tribulations of Reynolds as he fights existing subdivision rules and regulations and attempts to found legislation which would allow him to … (9 comments)

green living: Solar Rebates on Your Income Tax - 07/02/08 10:17 AM

Consumers can reduce their energy bills and carbon footprints by installing solar devices    on their homes.
Wind power is also a viable option in some areas. Even businesses can reap a potential    30% tax credit.
Californians can save $11,000 on a solar system. A 4.3 kW system can yield over $9,000   in state rebates plus a $2,000 federal tax credit.
In Colorado saving of up to 65% are available on a home solar electric system. $15,500  on a  3kW system and a potential of up to 70% for businesses.
A federal solar energy tax credit is also available … (4 comments)

green living: Geodesic Greenhouse - 05/04/08 04:05 PM
 Year Round Gardening in Colorado
Many of you expressed interest in geodesic gardening. The thermal mass is where the goldfish are kept. I am not kidding. The entire center of the dome is usually filled with raised beds as well as the space above those raised beds.
http://www.geodesic-greenhouse-kits.com I have posted the link for the website which will explain more than I ever can. It is an amazing design and I would recommend to any mountain gardener who wants to grow all year long. Discover a gardening life that doesn't include the risk of animals and hail damage.    … (1 comments)

green living: Dome Gardening - 04/30/08 08:30 AM
Dome gardening is great for the mountains. Imagine having a growing season year round at an elevation of over 8,000 ft.
The mountains of Colorado can provide fresh vegetables. Within a matter of a few months this dome structure will be filled with fresh tomatoes, a variety of herbs and lettuces, not to mention some of the best carrots you will ever eat, small and sweet.
Right now I am digging into the beds and turning over the compost pile. The seedlings are ready to transplant.
This particular structure will be home to some of the best organic vegetables in the county. Currently, we … (16 comments)
