Backyard wildlife ...

Hello folks,

Thought I would share some pics of the backyard wildlife I just had the pleasure of experiencing. Was sitting on my back lania which doubles as my office when I heard an odd noise. Looked up and it was the momma wildcat and right behind her was a baby. The wildcat was roughly 8 feet away from me and when the baby saw me she ran off into the brush.

Went and got my camera and followed them into the brush (barefooted by the way) and got a couple nice pictures. There were actually 2 babies with the momma.

Here is a pic of the momma. She is a bit bigger than the normal house cat.

Here is one of the babies. he decided to plop down in the shade and take it easy. I was about 12 feet away when taking picture.

Shark Valley

Hello Folks,

Just finished with an awesome weekend. Sunday was spent driving through the Everglades and visiting Everglades national Park and more specifically "Shark Valley". The name can be quite deceiving since there are NO Sharks at Shark valley, unless you happen upon an SNL type of Land Shark!!

On the way to Shark Valley we took a deture down a very scenic road named "Loop Road". I had not been down Loop Road in abour 6 or 7 years, but remember it being a beautiful place to drive for someone who enjoys wildlife and mother nature. Loop Road is just West of Shark Valley off of Hwy 41 and is a gravel, sand and sometimes muddy road ...... My Honda Accord looks like we went "4-wheelin' in it and is in BAD need of a washing.

The scenic road takes you back into the Everglades, through a huge swampy area inundated with Cypress Trees, Florida birds and the occasional Alligator. On both sides of the road for 85% of the drive is water.

Below is the largest Alligator I've ever seen on out in the wild, tour guide said this guy is 14+ feet long. His head was roughly the width ofand length of my torso.... If not bigger!!

Exotic Pousonous Snake Bites Man in South Florida .....

Hello Folks,

For the past few years, South Florida has been battling the spread of various Python Snake species. Florida is also home to numerous 'Exotic" animal species from birds, fish, mammals, to reptiles. I've always been wondering when an "Exotic" poisonous snake would show up out in the wild.

Well, on Wedneday August 20th, a Comcast cable employee was working outside an apartment building in Hollywood, Florida when he was attacked by a Green Mamba Snake. The snake bit him causing the worker to be rushed to the hospital for anti-venom.

Fortunately the Comcast worker is recovering well, but the snake was never found !!!!

Sooooo, now that it wasn't worrisome enough to be watching for large Pythons, now we need to be watching for Mambas or other exotic poisonous snakes.

Oh My .... That is in the water??

Hello folks,

I stumbled across a sea critter tonight on the beach which I had never seen before. What was odd is that in all the years I've been walking the beach (15+ years), I've never seen these critters before and tonight, I must have seen 20 to 30 of them. Quite odd.....

This little guy was about three inches long and found in the shallow water (only a few inches deep). At first I thought it was some type of plant growth until I realized it was moving across the bottom on the sand.

17 Foot Snake Caught in South Florida

Hello Folks,

This past week (last week of July 2009) a 17 foot 2 inch Burmese Python was caught and killed in South Florida. As reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the snake weighted 207 pounds and had a girth of 26 inches. The snake was killed after it was found.

The state of Florida started a trapping campaign in the past month which will last till the end of October. Special permits were issued to specific trappers to hunt for pythons in south Florida. The permits require that when a Python is found, it is killed on site, measurements of the snake are recorded, and the stomach contents are examined. The trapper can do whatever they like with the skin, but no bounty is being paid by the state for the dead snake. The idea behind this program is to see how many of these exotic snakes can be caught, where they are concentrated and find out what they are eating.

Vanderbilt Beach - Naples, Florida ...... It is a Rough Life !!!!

Hello Folks,

Visited vanderbilt Beach in Naples Florida this morning. Beautiful day and the gulf was quite calm. Arrived at the beach around 9:00am and it was already getting crowded, but understandably so since it was such a gorgeous day.

Highlight of the beach walk was the sharks tooth which I found. Teeth like this are actually fossils and are between 5 to 7 MILLION years old !!!!! ............ Yes .... you read that right .... MILLION.

Also say numerous Snooks swimming along the beach feeding on smaller fish.

Barefoot Beach

Hello Folks,

Last night was a great night for walking the beach. One of the first nights in quite some time that we did not have thundershowers. Barefoot beach is a great place to walk because few people go out there. Typically it costs $8.00 to visit this county park, but they stop collecting the fee at 5:00pm in the evenings, so if you go out after 5:00pm, it is free to enter.

Howdy Folks,

Windy day in paradise today. Mother Nature sure is whipping up the winds off the Gulf of Mexico which has also churned up the waters. Gulf was quite rough this afternoon, rougher than I've seen it in quite some time. Quite a few surfers taking advantage of the rough waters by catching the waves.

Here are a few picks from today's walk on Bonita Beach at Big Hickory......

Below is only a few of the birds in the flock of "Skimmers" resting on the beach. If you look closely, you will notice that the lower beak on these birds is longer than the upper beak. These birds are called "Skimmers" because they fly only an inch above the surface of the water with their lower beak in the water. When the beak hits a fish, it closes extremely fast to catch the fishy.

Since today is extremely windy and the water quite rough, these birds are not able to skim the water for food, so that chose to rest instead.

And to finish up today's walk, I came across Otis the Tortoise having a little lunch. Otis is a Gopher Tortoise. These are a protected species, so it is illegal to bother him.

Went kayaking for the first time earlier this week. Wow, if ya never been Kayaking before, best be prepared for some sore arms. We rented a couple kayaks at Lover's Key State Park in Lee County Florida and paddled around the bay & islands. Saw a couple HUGE Manatees swimming under our kayaks, which was quite neat.

Below is a pic of the small restaurant in the rear of the Lover's Key Resort. As you can see they are "right" on the water. Never eaten here before, but will in the near future. The restaurant is down by the small deck in the picture.

Picture below is looking in the opposite direction as the pic above. We had stopped on a small beach and "borrowed" a couple lounge chairs for about 20 minutes to rest our arms ...... even though there were "no trespassing signs" posted. hehe

Hope you enjoyed the photos. It is a rough life livng in Southwest Florida, but someone has to do it!!

Southwest Florida Shuffle .......

Hello Folks,

From the first of May until the end of October every year is Stingray season on the beaches of Southwest Florida. The first thing most locals will tell you is to 'Shuffle" your feet as you walk in the surf. By shuffling your feet, you will scare off any stingrays before you have a chance to step on them.

This mornings walk in the calm surf along Bonita Beach revealed numerous stingrays. It doesn't matter how big or small they are, if you step on them they will nail you with the barb in their tail out of defense.

Sea Turtles are one of the few animals which will swim thousands of miles in our oceans only to end back up on the beach which they were born. This jouney brings them back "to home" upon which they lay their eggs for the next generation.

In the picture below, if you look closely, you will see the "tracks" from the momma sea turtle as she pulled herself up on the beach to lay her eggs. Then you can see her tracks again as she headed back out into the gulf. For a Sea Turtle, this is a huge undertaking as they were not designed to be able to "walk" on land. The hours it takes for her to craw up the beach, dig a deep nest, lay her 80+ eggs, bury the eggs, and then craw back o the water.... only to never know if her efforts would pay off.
