Take a Reporter to Lunch - 11/27/07 06:27 AM
Dear readers,
I was just reading a national story in our local paper about housing and mortgage gloom and doom. Now, I know the College Station paper uses a lot of national stories for filler, and folks in the Brazos Valley should have an idea what's going on in some markets, but as usual the filler they used gives the impression that all is bad everywhere. Not so.
So, take a reporter to lunch. Educate them on the positive aspects of our current market. Help them accentuate the positive by giving them something positive to write about. They can either get their filler … (6 comments)

Attention Seattle...NPR Story - 11/26/07 05:36 PM
Hello Seattle,
Texas here. I just heard a story on National Public Radio you may want to catch as it comes to your time zone this evening.
Its about marijuana grow houses in the Seattle area, and how poor mortgage lending practices contributed to their proliferation.
The story ran during our 5:15 to 5:30 pm segment, here in College Station, Texas. I'm sure it will also be available on-line.

Our Little Taste of Winter - 11/24/07 09:01 PM
Dear readers,
Brrrrrrrr. We finally have our first little taste of winter. Its been in the 40's all day with light to heavy rain. The same is expected tomorrow.
One of the things I enjoy about winter the most is a fire in the fireplace. You don't get to do that a lot here in Bryan and College Station. I'm working my way through my cord of wood. There is something satisfying about sitting with my back to a warm fire, and I'm appreciating it more and more as I age.
It'll probably be back in the 80s next week.

Support our Regional Airport - 11/24/07 08:57 PM
Dear readers,
I was speaking with a friend who had just driven in from the Houston airport. He was talking about the drive, the shuttle buses from the parking facility to the terminals, and how much it all cost. I asked him if he enjoyed driving to Houston. He didn't think it was funny.
So I asked why he didn't fly out of Easterwood and connect in Houston instead. We have several flights a day that make most connections work. He said he "heard" it was a lot more expensive and there weren't good connections.
Yes, ticket prices are sometimes higher than if you … (1 comments)

Beware the Ice Storm - 11/24/07 08:47 PM
Dear readers,
I'm reminded about a nasty little ice storm we had here in College Station, Texas in the late 80s. I remember leaving my job at the airport and thinking that I should have done so about an hour earlier, because it was beginning to freeze. I wrecked my best friends Jimmy on the way home that day.
We are going to have another ice storm here someday, and I just want to remind everyone that the best thing to do in an ice storm is hide in your house. Get home before it starts and enjoy a day or two with … (1 comments)

East side versus West side - 11/24/07 08:41 PM
Dear readers,
I was at a listing appointment today, and heard something I hadn't really thought about, yet.
I was visiting with an older couple, who were selling their next to the, next to the last home they plan to ever own. Anyway, there planned to never live on the west side of College Station again. The reason they cited was;
If you live on the east side, you are driving west on the way to work in the morning (sun at your back), and east on the way home again in the evening (again, sun at your back). They apparently did not like … (6 comments)

Recycle College Station - 11/24/07 08:34 PM
Dear readers,
The City of College Station is reminding citizens to recycle this season. Landfill waste increases drastically during the holidays. Much of that waste can be recycled.
For more information on College Station's curbside recycling program, click http://www.cstx.gov/home/index.asp?page=2030.
Unfortunately, Bryan does not enjoy curbside recycling, but residents can take their recyclables to the community drop off at the Bryan Wal-Mart.

Happy Thanksgiving in Aggieland - 11/22/07 07:15 AM
Dear readers,
Today, I simply want to say from my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving! Please drive carefully, eat moderately, love a lot and get back home safely.
Good luck at the game on Friday!
Here's a nice poem for the day:
Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks; However, the reception's not so clear. As we pass the drumsticks or the shanks,No Maker holds such severed flesh less dear.Kindness is a requisite for grace; So must we be to all that suffer pain.Gratitude seems slightly out of placeIn places where compassion is less plain.Very few this day will give much thoughtIn passing to the creatures that they … (1 comments)

Aggie Bonfire Burns Bright - 11/21/07 06:53 AM
Dear readers,
This is a quick post to let you know that the Texas Aggie Bonfire burned bright last night. The stack was ignited at 8:30 last night, with a crowd of 3,000 attending.
Igniting the five-tiered stack was banned over the weekend due to a burn ban in Robertson County. The ban was lifted after three inches of rain fell over the weekend.
So far, there are no reports of accidents or incidents. A great photo can be found at www.TheEagle.com.
Happy Thanksgiving to all Aggies. Be careful on the roads!

Brazos Valley Reports Slowing Economy - 11/19/07 07:50 AM
Dear readers,
The Eagle, Bryan & College Station's hometown newspaper reported that growth in the Brazos Valley is "slowing," but not experiencing an economic decline.
The Eagleemploys economist Karr Ingham to compile a monthly index of the Brazos Valley's economy. The index remained stable, gaining only .1 points from August 2007 to September 2007. The index rose 2.4 points between September 2006 to September 2007.
Quoting Ingham from The Eagle, "Its still growing, just at a slower rate. It's impossible to sustain growth year over year. These things just ebb and flow."

Watch Those School Zones... - 11/17/07 11:46 AM
Dear readers,
This is just a quick post to say, "Watch your speed in the local school zones." Someone near and dear to me received a citation from College Station's finest last week for speeding in a school zone.
It just goes to remind me how important it is to keep our speed down. We aren't 10 minutes from anything in the Brazos Valley, so there's no real reason to be in a hurry.

Aggieland - Thanksgiving, UT, Bonfire and Burn Bans... - 11/17/07 07:33 AM
Dear readers,
But for graduation, this is probably the busiest week in Aggieland.
First, this Friday is the annual match-up between the Aggies and the little school down the road. The Aggies aren't having the best football season, but that doesn't take away enthusiasm for this game. You never know when good ole' Aggie luck will prevail.
On a sadder note, it was at 0242 on November 18th 1999 (early tomorrow morning) that the bonfire stack under construction on the Texas A&M campus collapsed and killed 11 students and 1 graduate. Since that time, Texas A&M University has not sanctioned a student bonfire.

Recycle - How Far Will You (or your government) Go - 11/14/07 06:20 AM
Dear readers,
Today is the day that I spend some early morning time in the garage, preparing the recyclables. Here in College Station, Texas we have to separate our plastics, bottles (only clear and brown), aluminum & steel cans, and newspaper. Each category goes into its own plastic bag (provided by the City of College Station) and then out on the curb.
Our friends in larger cities have it easier. In San Antonio, my relatives put everything into a blue bin and drag it out to the curb. Residents don't have to sort or put items into bags. In Austin, friends put their … (2 comments)

Another week of summer.... - 11/12/07 04:52 PM
Dear readers,
Well, here's to another week of summer in the Brazos Valley. Its Nov. 12 and we are in for another week of highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. Basically, its Hawaii weather without the ocean.
Doing numbers in my head, I think we save about $50 every week the ac/heater isn't running. I was looking forward to the cooler weather, but we do have some good Indian Summers here in College Station, Texas.

Thinking of WWII Veterans - 11/12/07 01:29 PM
Dear readers,
Just home for my lunch break, I turned on the History Channel and there was the story of our Marines and the Battle of Wake Island in 1941. Wake has been called the "Alamo of the Pacific," and the title is appropriate. Much of the documentary is on the return of Veteran's to the island for the first time in 60 years. The men are very emotional.
In my past life I flew jets in the Pacific for a major airline. Every year, we took Veterans to Iwo Jima, which like Wake isn't accessible but for special charters. Some of us were spent … (2 comments)

Web-based Versus PC-based Applications - 11/11/07 07:49 AM
Dear readers,
Have you noticed the trend to Web-based applications? It seems we are returning to the 70's when I grew up with computers. As users, we sat at a dumb terminal and all of the programs and data were on a mainframe somewhere.
We moved away from that over time, buying software for each individual machine, and MAYBE using the Internet to move the data around.
Now we are back. Sure, there are advantages. You can access Active Rain, Top Producer, and our MLXchange from ANY Internet computer, anywhere. I remember the Top Producer salesman saying that I could access my database from France. … (4 comments)

George H.W. Bush Skydives Again (at 83) - 11/11/07 07:44 AM
Dear readers,
President Bush #41 surprised a crowd of several thousand at the re-dedication of his presidential library on Saturday by skydiving into the event. Bush waved wildly and gestured with his legs while on approach to a landing only a few yards in front of the stage. The spectacular entrance was kept secret from both the crowd, and members of his family until the event.
This isn't the first time that President Bush has jumped into Aggieland, but skydives were mostly reserved for birthdays. If my memory is correct, this is his third or fourth jump onto the Texas A&M campus. Bush normally … (4 comments)

Marine Corps Birthday... - 11/09/07 03:00 PM
Dear readers,
As some of you may know, my family spent 1993-2003 living on Guam and other islands in the Western Pacific. Most of this was U.S. territory, taken by force by Japan on December 8, 1941.
Besides Christmas and Easter, the two largest holidays on Guam are Veteran's Day and Liberation Day. On November 10, 1775, the United States Continental Congress passed a resolution for the foundation of a Marine force for the United States. On July 21, 1944, U.S. and Allied Forces landed on Guam to retake the island from Japan and end a 4 1/2 year occupation, which included be-headings, … (3 comments)

Brazos Valley Symphony Concert on November 16th - 11/08/07 06:09 AM

The concerts are normally held at the Rudder complex on the Texas A&M Campus, but is using different venues during the remodelling of the complex. During questions, Gates made two comments which are noteworthy.

So, if you don't remember the routine, "turn" your clocks back one hour when you go to bed, lest you be late to the drop zone in morning.
Luckily, most of us have it figured out by Monday.

Great Time at Trunks for Treats... - 11/01/07 07:43 AM

Wow. Trunks for Treats, which we held in the parking lot of the College Station Keller Williams office last night, was a great success. Turnout is estimated at just under 1,000, and we raised some money for a local cause, the Down Syndrome Support Group of Bryan College Station.

Many thanks to all of our sponsors. We'll be listing them in a blog later today.
