So much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Thankful on Thanksgiving!

I have spent the last 3 weeks in bed recovering. Recovering from surgery that I shared with you a couple of months ago.

During this time I have had a great deal of time to reflect, think, relax, and re-coop.

These are the things that I have been recently thankful for, in no particular order.

My husband who helped me in and out of bed.

My Mom who helped me get in the shower.

My sister who administered meds (Nurse K) and cooked me lunch and dinner.

My kids who understood that I couldn't be chasing them around the house.

My Dad who cooked every night and had to sleep on the couch.

My office staff who remained calm when I asked for the nineteenth time "was it taken care of"

My sister who played all kinds of different roles in and out of the office.

On a bigger note, here are the things that I'm thankful for on any particular day, again no order.

My life, even with the trying times that have taught me so much.

My family.

My friends.

The great people that I am privileged to work with day in and day out.

My sisters.

The work that I'm able to do.

The people that inspire me and the people that remind me to be humble.

The great Country that we live in.

The love of some great people.

My health and those that I love.

I'm sure that I could go on and on with these little lists. However, this is what comes first in my mind and I just wanted to share.

I just couldn't resist. Jimmy Stewart wrote this great post yesterday about why his Active Rain blog is so important to him. He mentions that he took a personality test. His version was a Behavior Styles test. He also mentions how his personality will help him help people with what he possesses.

Many of the comments mentioned the DISC personality test, which we use heavily in our office. I noticed that some people were interested about the DISC test so I thought I would share with you a website where you can take a quick and easy test (as well as your office mates, employees and team members) to see where everyone falls into place. This is an online version and costs only $16.00. Once you have the results and you know "what" your style is you are able to apply it in different ways. You can take an additional "team assessment" to place the people on your team in the proper strengths positions or take a career assessment. There are many things that can be achieved with better understanding from these tests.

Once you have your results it will tell you exactly which style you are: D I S or C What the strengths are of these different types, how others perceive you, how you perceive yourself and what could be personal growth areas for your type.

My top 2 profiles are D & I (I'll let you figure out what they mean), but my highest strength is a Persuader. I have included the "outline" of such.

Persuader

An extremely outgoing and social person/ sheila tends to make friends easily and likes to have

fun with others. She wants to make commitments even if she may be unable to keep them;

but that is because of her desire to please, not because of any intent to deceive, sheila tends

to be very spontaneous, easily becoming bored with routine tasks.

sheila is motivated by her ability to lead groups and influence others around her. She is

someone who takes the responsibility of leadership seriously when it is given to her, and is

typically able to make important decisions without delay. She exudes confidence and others

respond to sheila's natural ability to be a front runner.

Others see sheila as a versatile person whom they rely upon to break up monotonous or

routine situations. She tends to be individualistic, and may sometimes prefer to do things

outside of the team. sheila may even be perceived as "restless", since she tends to move

Setting goals and reaching them.

I wasn't much of a goal setter when I started in my real estate career. I didn't even have them written down. Thanks to encouragement from people like Missy Caulk, I did wind up setting goals for myself for the year. Of course, when I switched brokers, I feared I might not accomplish some of them. I figured it would take some time to get situated in my new office and discover exactly what it was that I felt I had been missing at my last office. I needed time to settle in and sometimes, that takes away from productivity.

Instead, I found myself settled in immediately and my productivity went through the roof. Not just with clients and numbers, but with thoughts, ideas, blogs, and other accomplishments (such as being selected to serve on a NAR Committee in 2010). Of course, you've all heard me rave about my office and broker by now, so I'll keep that to a minimum.

It happened this month, but took less time than I had planned for.

While doing some paperwork this morning, it dawned on me that I had hit the $1,000,000 mark. I had sold over one million dollars of real estate. Now before you all dismiss that and say, "but Matt, that's not a lot," let me explain why this was a big goal for me. When I moved to RE/MAX Access from my previous office, I was a bit frustrated with where I was at in my real estate career. I knew I had the skill, I just wasn't performing the way I wanted to. So when I came to RE/MAX Access, my goal was to reach one million in sales by year's end.

I was able to cross that magic number from July 1st to October 7th. I still have two and a half months to push that goal further.

Of course, one million in sales will not keep most real estate agents alive for a year (it sounds like a lot, but by the time you're finished with commission splits, taxes, expenses, etc. - you get the picture). Nonetheless, I was able to reach a personal goal and have time to pass it before the deadline of the year's end.

Thanks to everyone at RE/MAX Access for helping me do it.

P.S. Please note, this post is not about bragging rights as I don't really feel that this is all that much to brag about. What it is designed to do is to show what a little goal setting can do for oneself, especially if you complete the goal and still have time to move higher. I also hope it might encourage a few agents who get stuck in the "I can't do it" mode - I've been there before and know it's a lie.

The Irony ~ Not so silent Sunday!

This morning we woke up to lightening, thunder and tons of rain! South Texas needs this rain desperately. My son and I jumped in the car so I could run to the office to pick up the last bit of a project that I am working on (yes, a REALTORS job is never done).

This is what we ran into!

p.s. No we didn't cross like some stupid guy that risked the Fire Departments' Crew and truck at another crossing that we passed!

Standing so close to something so powerful was interesting. You could hear the rush of the water flowing over the road and into the "DRY" creek. Watch out for mother nature!

This year I participated in the 2nd annual Vintage Oaks Grape Stomp!

Vintage Oaks is a great community located in New Braunfels, Texas right off of Hwy 46 between Hwy 337 in New Braunfels and 281North in Bulverde.

It's a big shabang! There are all kinds of vendors out there, Builders showing their models, Dry Comal Creek is one of the main sponsors (and runs the actual stomp itself) as well as wine tasting, dancing, food and more food (tons of local restaurants showing off their favorites!) So, when it comes around next year make sure that you join in on the fun at the Vintage Oaks, New Braunfels, Texas ~ Get your Grape Stomp on ~

My friend Kathy and I decided to be in the competition (10 other stomper teams) even though neither one of us either had any stomping experience! I will tell you that in these photos the stomping looks fun (but according to her was lots of work), but I can tell you that the gathering of the juice (um, much harder job). You can tell by my expression that it was so work getting the "juice" into this jug through a hose!

I love blogging.

You may have noticed before, but it's a fact, I love to blog about real estate. It's good for my business, but I actually find it enjoyable too. In that vein, I would like to make it to this year's Blogworld and New Media Expo (including REBlogworld). Of course, these things cost money and there are expenses...blah blah blah. However, Alltop is sponsoring a contest to allow 3 lucky winners to attend this year's event.

I entered, but I need your help. First of all, I misread a rule, which has seriously put me behind the curve. I thought I was doing okay, but realized that the rule was rather specific and I needed to get moving - so I turn to you, the ActiveRain community for help.

The grand prize for the contest is entrance to the conference as well as hotel accommodations. With those two paid for, I can deal with the flights and food for the three days. I need to win this. Imagine how many blogs I'll churn out when I get back with all the new info I've acquired. Think of me as your Blogworld corespondent. I'm so excited about this event that is coming up this Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the "Campanas" area located in Cibolo Canyon Subdivision hosted by Sitterle Homes.

All of the art was submitted by family members of the Women's Council of REALTORS (also knows as WCR).

Remembering ~ The lives, my family and the Twin Towers

Back in October of 2001 I wrote some of the following in a Newsletter to my sphere. Yes, back in the day (before Active Rain) we REALTORS wrote Newsletters! This is some part of the Newsletter that as I look back on it I just thought I would share.

THE LIVES

I won't share the disbelief as all of that was unfolding on national television as I know so many of us have our own story. I just wanted to make mention that I know those that were taken that day will not be forgotten.

MY FAMILY

First off, I have 3 New York City Fire Fighter's (well, they were back in 2001) Cousins that were on duty that atrocious day. I would like to Thank them again for their work that day (as well as every other day) protecting our citizens and property. They are:

Brian Donovan, Engine 275, S. Jamaica, Queens, NY

Michael Donovan, Station 290, Brooklyn, NY (promoted to Captain and moved to the Commissioners office that same week)

John Wolfe, Staten Island, NY, Jewett Avenue Fire Station

Not just them, but all Fire Fighters as well as Military, Police and other public servants of our great Nation.

One cousin has a particular story of being in charge and sending his entire crew up into the building and none of them returning. It's so hard to hear someone talk about such a thing. I can't even image being in his shoes.

THE TWIN TOWERS

I have fond memories as a child of the Twin Towers in New York City. As a child I used to spend my summers visiting my grandparents in Staten Island. My Grandfather's office was located in the Towers and I remember how excited I was to walk into that building. As a short kid it sure was something like I had never seen growing up in San Antonio, Texas.

Before my grandfather passed away in 2002 I sat down with him and interviewed him on a few things in life. See my Grandfather, Richard Decker was a Chief Engineer for Moran Transportation & Towing which back in the day was located in NY, NY. He worked there from 1943 until his retirement (which I guess to be around the 1980's or so). He would tell me stories about working on the tug boat out in the Hudson River carefully navigating larger ships in and out of the waters.

The following is a remembrance that he had about the Towers being built (interview conducted roughly October 2001).

"I would drive my car from Staten Island to Journal Square and take the Hudson Tube to Moran Transportation and Towing Company. The office was located in Tower 2 until about 10 years ago when they relocated to Connecticut.

I would "tie-up" at the old piers in New York City about the time that the excavation on Tower 1 was beginning. You could look down in the enormous hole (about 5 stories deep) and see the subway trains exposed under the ground. When the construction was first stared, wreckage of ancient sailing ships were discovered under water. The elevators in the Twin Towers could go about 60 miles per hour. My nephew, Tommy Donovan worked for Otis Elevator who installed the elevators. My son-in-law, Harold Christiansen also helped in the building of the towers. The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world until the Towers were built around 1972 or so.

One particular time I took my granddaughter, Sheila Moran (about 4-5 years old) to the "city" and I took her to the Twin Towers to show her where I worked. I can remember that they had a dancer in the foyer of the towers and Sheila watched the entertainment and sat on the edge of the steps dangling her little legs. That was about 30 years ago. "

I don't have any video to share. Just some words from an 82 year old man before he passed about certain memories that he had.

I hope you don't mind me sharing.

It's all about the presentation

I was on my way to a listing appointment when I saw this sign.

Now I don't know about you but to me there was a certain "tone" behind it. See it? I thought so. I realize the word PLEASE is in there, but really?

Now I'm not saying that it's not okay to voice your opinion, go off on someone (that deserves it) or even jolt some people back into reality, but honestly does anyone else agree with me that there is a certain amount of decorum necessary?

I think about all of the times that I have had to stand up for what I believed in or had to persuade others to see a solution that I had in mind was in their best interest. How many times have I had to handle a sticky situation with my children, husband, team mate, office employee, Seller or Buyer for that matter. Did I just barrel down their hallway and start screaming like a lunatic? Throw the stapler at them? Pegged them with spit balls? Turn their offers or contracts into paper airplanes and dart them in their direction? Heavens no. (did I secretly what to do all of those things? well, maybe sometimes)

Did I remind myself that I could achieve more with a better presentation? Gosh, darn, yes. We all know that it's necessary once in a while. Definitely, when a deal is going south and the other party can't see or won't see that there is a positive outcome if we just work through these details. Yes, some of these "details" may not be fun, nor popular or down right unpleasant. But to achieve our ultimate outcome and goal, was it necessary? Absolutely.

Do you think that I handled the truth in a polite, delicate way to make sure that they didn't get upset and start tuning me out or storm out of the room or heaven forbid ask me to leave their home? It was vital that I keep those lines of communication open, to be able to explain the circumstances, the path that we needed to take in order to achieve our goal and have it be successful.

So, Mr. Car Wash owner is conveying to HIS CLIENTS (and obviously some that aren't) that he is NOT happy that people are dumping trash in his dumpster, eh? That's fine and dandy, everyone has to vent once and while, right? Well..... What about the clients that aren't doing the offensive dumping on the property? How do you think they perceived Mr. Car Wash? Was it okay to BLAST everyone over the billboard? What about the people that WERE NOT yet his clients (like I could have possibly been driving by in a dirty car)? Think that they would have stopped in after seeing that sign? I know when I drove into the parking lot that I was half expecting to see some crazed guy running after my car like I was violating some privacy laws. I figured it he was willing to post the sign on his property that he was willing for many, many people to see what his message was, right?

Could the message have been said differently? How about "We are happy to have you dump your trash here when your a customer" or "dumpster available to customers only". I've got another one: "Trash dumping for car wash friends" I mean how many illegal dumpster dumpers would think if they were a friend or not? What about a sign ON the dumpster itself for the intended?

I know that his intended message was to the illegal people trespassing and illegally dumping, but what about the rest of us? Think he was making friends and influencing other people?

I was caught off guard by the message and was just wondering about the presentation.

You be the judge and tell me if I'm off base here.

Last but not least, Week 6

This course lasted for 9 weeks. I'm missing 2 weeks as those were reviews to back track, review and make sure that if something didn't get implemented that we had an opportunity to do so. It was very helpful.

But here we come to the end of the 9 weeks. I notice that our class has grown reliant on each other, celebrating our accomplishments and giving each other encouragement as well as feedback.

I'm amazed that a class that I thought I was to finish on my own actually provided me with a room full of new friends, each person dedicated to knowledge of what we had learned and how to implement it.

With that I wrote this letter to my Coach, Dane Bauerle.

You will notice that it pretty much sums up my enthusiasm and encouragement for anyone that is interested in Improving their Performance and Results.

Recession 101: What if nobody participated?

Driving along a cut away street on the North East side of San Antonio I curiously came across these billboards.

I couldn't believe my eyes and stopped the car and photographed each and every one. I'm sure I was a spectacle to the cars driving by. I hope the billboards were also a spectacle.

I was so pleased that someone was out there putting positive words out to the masses.

It was then that I read the story of how these billboards came to be. An anonymous donor wanted to remind Americans to collectively "take a deep breath". Have you ever heard of such a thing? Not me. Do I like it and appreciate it? You bet.

I tell you that morning there was nothing better than seeing these uplifting words "up in the sky".
