south capitol neighborhood: South Capitol Home Sale Prices - 06/10/10 07:05 AM

Olympia's South Capitol Neighborhood consists of over 400 well preserved homes, varying in styles from the English cottage look, Spanish style, to Victorian and Craftsman. In 1991 the entire South Capitol Neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic places.

The decline in home prices throughout Thurston County and in Olympia has not spared the South Capitol Neighborhood, but due to the uniqueness of this neighborhood, the pricing pressure is not as extreme as in other communities. Here is a list of the homes sold on the MLS within the past six months.

south capitol neighborhood: A Welcome Sign is a Welcome Sight - 02/12/09 04:01 PM

If you're familiar with driving through Olympia's South Capitol Neighborhood, you may have noticed the new neighborhood welcome sign.
The sign project, two years in the making, was finally concluded by the end of 2008. In December the neighborhood received the first of two welcome signs. Funded by a City of Olympia neighborhood grant, designed by yours truly, Sandy Nelson, manufactured by Esco Pacific Signs and installed by Mark Jobson and Bob Thomas. This sign is a monument to the South Capitol Neighborhood's special character and friendliness. The sign is located on the green space between Capitol Way and Washington St. We hope to have another sign greeting visitors travelling south … (0 comments)

south capitol neighborhood: South Capitol Neighborhood - A National Historic Treasure - 02/12/09 05:02 AM

Olympia's South Capitol Neighborhood quickly became the most popular place to live when the Capitol was being built on the hill. The oldest home dates from 1878, but the majority of houses were built between 1900 and 1928. You can find almost every popular housing style of the early 20th century in this neighborhood.

This is the time of year when gargantuan spiders may take over your home and feed on your visitors...

When ghosts and witches descend on your neighborhood,...

and gory monsters inhabit the front yards,...

turning them into grave yards.

In my Olympia neighborhood, many residents like to go all out with their Halloween efforts. That is part of the reason the neighborhood is so popular with Trick-or-Treaters. It's spooky, the homes are close together and there are safe sidewalks throughout the neighborhood. Some home-owners are so dedicated to the "Spook" they invite visitors to tour their haunted yards in exchange for donations to … (7 comments)

south capitol neighborhood: Historic Neighborhoods - 07/21/07 08:43 AM

I live in Olympia's South Capitol Neighborhood, which is a nationally recognized historic district. As such, any remodeling plans have to be approved not just by the city, but also by the Olympia Heritage Commission. Many home buyers will not be aware of this requirement until they submit their permit requests and then may possibly get turned down. If you're a Realtor with clients who fall in love with the charm of a historic home, but have plans to add on a sun-room, tear out the steep spindled staircase or pave the back yard, please have them check with the Heritage Commission's … (7 comments)
