SIDS is an acronym for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is the sudden death on an infant (under 1 year of age) whose death can not be explained by case investigation. The typical scene involves a care-taker going in to check on the quietly sleeping infant only to find them unresponsive and not breathing. It is a horrible situation for all involved in the sense that the parents are never given a true reason for the death making it difficult to grieve for the significant loss they suffered.
