gardening in florida: Summer Gardening in Florida - 08/06/17 04:08 PM
Summer Gardening in Florida
People who move to Florida from northern parts of the country find that they have to adjust to the different growing conditions when they are thinking about planting flowers or a vegetable garden.
Typically late winter/early Spring and Fall are the best times to plant most vegetables because of the cooler temperatures. Summer heat poses a real challenge to growing things and Florida gardeners are often just happy when they can keep their plants alive during the hottest summer months.
That is definitely true for the few plants I have currently growing. There is a hot pepper plant that was … (19 comments)

Foto Friday - Rhododendron
This this time of the year, the rhododendron are blooming mostly in cooler climates.  This photo was taken last year while visiting in Germany in a big public park in my hometown.  Here in Florida, we have the smaller azaleas that are in the same family and typically bloom in January and February in Florida.  Definitely something to consider by gardeners who move to Florida from northern states ad gardening in Florida will sometimes provide a challenge.  Rhododendron or azaleas, both shrubs make for some showy and colorful accents in any garden!

Gardening in Florida - English Dogwood
Every Spring, the English Dogwood bush in my backyard puts on its beautiful white flowers.  Sometimes, there are so many, it looks as if it snowed.  Well, ok, maybe that's going a little too far and besides, we don't like snow in Florida.
Nevertheless, the English Dogwood or Mock Orange Bush as it is also known, is just a pleasure to have in the Florida backyard.  The flower are very fragrant reminiscent of the wonderfully sweet smell of orange blossoms.

gardening in florida: Tuesday brought Bananas! - 04/01/14 11:11 AM
Tuesday brought Bananas!
After a long, long wait, our bananas are finally ripening!  The banana trees in our backyard had been blooming last Fall and set fruit.  Gardening in Florida can take many different forms and fruit trees like citrus and bananas are a favorite of many Florida gardeners.

All winter long, I've been making sure, the baby bananas didn't get "cold" even wrapping them up when there was the slightest chance of a frosty night.

It took them a long time to grow and turning yellow but with warmer temperatures setting in, I noticed the … (28 comments)

gardening in florida: January Roses in Florida - 01/02/14 07:30 AM
January Roses in Florida
These roses were cut from my garden today, the second day of this new year 2014.  They are a very fragrant variety that blooms almost all year around in our area and after taking down most of the Christmas decorations, they add a nice, fresh touch of color.  These are just one of the few other plants blooming in my garden this time of the year.
It was a fairly warm today with temperatures in the high 60s although it was a bit of rainy day with the sun struggling to to come out behind the clouds. … (13 comments)

gardening in florida: Beware the Brazilian Pepper Tree - Pretty, Invasive, Toxic - 12/22/13 07:11 AM
Beware the Brazilian PepperTree - Pretty, Invasive, Toxic
Introduced to Florida around 1890 as an ornamental shrub, the Brazilian Pepper plant is now widespread throughout Florida.  It's an evergreen and with it's glossy leaves, it is quite a pretty plant especially around the holidays when it puts on clusters of red berries.  Because of that, it is often - and falsely - called "Florida Holly".

As mentioned, Brazilian Pepper has become widespread in the frostfree areas of Florida and is now considered an invasive species that will crowd out other, native plants.   So much so, that Brazilian Pepper is … (13 comments)

Blooming Spring! English Dogwood
Finally, Spring flowers are popping up everywhere around the country.  Here in Florida, our temperatures have reached the 80s already in the daytime for a few days and the weather is pleasantly warm with a nice breeze.
Because of our warmer weather, we don't typically get the tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths coming out of the ground in our parts so I am enjoying the photos everyone else is posting.

The branches of the English Dogwood in my backyard is covered in beautiful white and fragrant flowers.  Interestingly, it is not like the Dogwood tree we … (9 comments)

Florida Gardening - Mystery Vine in my Florida Yard
For many of the new residents who are moving to Florida every year from other states, Florida gardening is quite a different experience.  Here in Florida, we can practically grow things throughout the entire year.  Obviously, not all things grow at all times so we do have growing seasons for flowers, fruit and vegetables that differ from plant to plant.
Gardening in Florida also brings with it the occasional "volunteer" plant that decides your yard is a great place to grow.  I currently have one of those plants that I didn't plant … (26 comments)

Florida Living:  Gardening in Small Spaces
You don't need acreage or a small farm for gardening in Florida either for flowers or some fresh vegetables for the dinner table.  Living in a warm climate in Florida, we are able to grow stuff almost year round!

Florida's climate can be a challenge to gardeners who moved here from the North where they are used to four distinct seasons.  Strawberries ripen in February, Tomatoes should be planted early in the year, and you can even grow such exotic things such as Okra and Avocado.
My Hernando Beach backyard is not a very big one.  Yet, … (12 comments)
