There are 646,000,000,000 gallons of water in the largest made-made, non-flood control lake in the United States. All this water makes for billions of fish, and big ones at that. Fed by the Niangua River, the Osage River, Grandglaize Creek and Gravois Creek -- the Great Lake of the Ozarks is a Fisherman's dream. The word is out that the ice is broken and the fish are biting! The massive Lake of the Ozarks is lies across two counties. The northern edge of the Lake with the area around Bagnell Dam and Lake of the Ozarks State Park are located in Miller County, but the largest part of the Lake lies in Camden County. Camden County is every bit as chock-full of history as Miller County. Camden County was first called "Kinderhook County". The name was in honor of President Martin Van Buren and was named after his home in Kinderhook, New York. With a surface covering 55,000 acres, Lake of the Ozarks is actually situated in two counties. The largest part of the Lake lies in Camden County, but the northern edge of the Lake around Bagnell Dam and Lake of the Ozarks State Park are located in Miller County. Both counties are a treasure trough of history, but today let's look at beautiful Miller County. When St. Patrick headed to Ireland on a missionary venture, he had no idea that his life and the legends surrounding him would become the grand event that it has. The building of Bagnell Dam and Lake of the Ozarks brought people to the area and created a solid economic base during the time of the Great Depression. Today, the economy continues to do well along the historic Bagnell Dam Strip. With so much to do and see along "The Strip", locals and visitors alike continue to flock to the area. At the entrance to the strip a giant Indian stands with an upraised arm. He is one of the notorious "muffler men" created in the 1960's for various gas station chains. When you visit the Lake of the Ozarks, did you know that you are not only visiting a beautiful recreational facility, but also a hard working body of water? The lake, actually a reservoir created when the Great Osage River was dammed, supplies cheap power throughout the state of Missouri. In 1929, the Union Electric Company employed 20,000 workers over a two year period to build a dam on the Great Osage River for the purpose of generating electricity.
