WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU HEARD ABOUT 9/11?

Oddly enough, we did not turn on the TV that morning while getting ready for work. It's usually on every morning but for some reason it wasn't. Maybe because I would have been glued to the tube had it been on.

Anyway, a few blocks from home I turn left on Auburn Folsom Rd., sometimes with no waiting, sometimes after a few cars pass. That morning was different...the cars were bumper to bumper and just sitting there. After a few minutes a nice man motioned for me to go ahead of him and then we looked like a long caterpiller just creeping along. I figured there had been a terrible automobile accident and it was going to make me late getting to school.

You see, I was a special education teacher in El Dorado County so I drove over the "dam road" every day. It was a great short cut and saved us from going through Folsom. I like to drive in peace and quiet so of course I didn't have the radio on. After a few minutes of creeping my cell phone rang. It was my husband reporting that our daughter had called and told him to turn on the TV. To my amazement the problem was not a car accident at all but what is now known as 9/11.

I arrived at school about an hour and a half later since the "dam road" had been ordered closed as a precaution. It seemed like everyone was trying to find a better, faster way to get around but it wasn't happenin' Luckily I had an aide who came from a different direction and made it to school on time and she had the class well under control.

I can remember on that day just wanting to be with my family. It really put things in perspective.

The 57th ORIENTAL FOOD BAZAAR is set for March 5th from 11-6 at Del Oro High School in Loomis. The Teriyaki Chicken and Chow Mein made from an old family recipe is always a crowd pleaser! What's that you say??? EARTH HOUR-TURN OFF MY LIGHTS FOR AN HOUR on March 27

Have you ever looked out over the horizon at all of the lights in buildings, on street signs, just everywhere and wondered how much electricity we could save if we turned them off at night? I have! And soon there is something easy we can do to for just one little hour. It's EARTH HOUR on March 27th at 8:30 pm local time! It's a GLOBAL endeavor for our GLOBE.

Now, if you're like me and you're on some kind of electronic device about that time of night, it will be a concession but I think we can do it for an hour, Don't You??? Let's try not to have electronic withdrawal! Plan something fun and different instead.

Here's a chance to organize your block for a block party and look at the stars. When's the last time you did that? Or get out the candles, that's always fun. Plan something with family or friends and hopefully the wee little ones will already be in bed. Just remember to blow out the candles before you go to bed... If you work for a city, county or state government they are asking people to get those entities on board also. I understand our capitol is going dark for an hour. How about yours?

Have you been wondering what's been happening in our local real estate Market in the last 15 months? Well, here it is in living color. The stats you've been waiting to see.

This graph includes the 15 Month Market Trends for the Tri County Area of Placer, El Dorado and Sacramento Counties so each county alone might be a little different, but this gives a general idea of what's happening in "our neck of the woods."

Real Estate is regional and what happening in one area isn't necessarily what's happening in another so when we hear about Los Angeles or Detroit that information doesn't always apply to our area.

Have you received an email recently telling you to register your cell phone on a DO NOT CALL list or your number will be published and telemarketers will call you, which will result in fees to you? I received one today and decided to check out the validity since I had received the same or similar emails in the past.

When I checked on Snopes.com it said it is an Urban Legend so I decided to go to the source and checked the Federal Communication Commission. Their document basically said that there is NO SEPARATE WIRELESS DO NOT CALL list. All phones may be placed on the DO NOT CALL list by logging on to www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 and registering.

Your number remains on the list until you remove it or cancel your service, so if you have registered your phone in the past there is no need to re-register it. If you are registering a number for the first time, the law takes affect 30 days after registration. To see the full text of the article click on the FCC link above.

ORIENTAL FOOD BAZAAR IN LOOMIS SET FOR MARCH 6th

The 56^th Oriental Food Bazaar in Loomis is set for March 6, 2010.

If you have ever attended, your mouth is probably watering for the Teriyaki Chicken or Kushiyaki Beef.

My personal favorite is the Chow Mein that is still being made, using the same family recipe, as it has been made for the last 56 years.

If you have never been to the Bazaar, do yourself a flavor favor and check it out.

Of course, there are the other favorites like sushi and freshly made desserts.

This year at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00, Soju (Sumie Ward) and her students will have a

Japanese Tea Ceremony demonstration.

Homeless In America

Homeless in America...My husband and I were discussing this very topic last night. It's wonderful that a lot of people are stepping up and helping those in need in Haiti. On the flip side, are we seeing the needs in our own backyard? As Realtors, we know these people are not all the antisocial guys we used to characterize as homeless. Some of them are the ones that used to live in the very houses we are selling.

Last year, in our area we heard about the tent city in Sacramento, reported by Lisa Ling on national TV, and then we heard how it was being shut down.

Closer to home in Placer County, we have a program put on by the Gathering Inn which addresses the needs of homeless and provides shelter and safety at night. Unfortunately it can only accomodate about 60 people each night but it's a great model that could be adopted in other communities. Check out the Gathering Inn Website and see if it will work in your community. It was started by a group of ministers who saw a need and acted on it. At this very moment in Placer County it is in the 40s with 30 mile per hour winds that are expected to get stronger with more rain. Where are the homeless???

In any given night in America, 700,000 to 2 million people have no home to go to. Staggering statistic? Yes. And these numbers were from 1996.

In Colorado Springs, Fountain Creek runs parallel to Interstate 25. It has become 'home' to many of the city's considerable homeless population. It is estimated that Colorado Spring's chronic homeless number about 350 persons, and about 750 more have joined the homeless population due to job loss. That puts the number of people living on the streets, or along the creek bed, at approximately 1100.

Local Shelters are filled to capacity, and while the city struggles to find a solution, the homeless camps remain. Some cities around the country are providing basic services to their 'tent cities' on public land, such as portable toilets, (which I saw today at a few of the camps I photographed), trash pick up, firewood, and mobile medical vans.

A few of the homeless are there because they want to be. Most are not.

Why not designate an area, provide the needed services, and give these people a place to live with some dignity while we all await better times?

Proudly, in just 24 hours, we as Americans donated 10 million dollars to the relief effort in Haiti.

Granted, it's not on the same scale, but are the fast growing tent cities across America not also a crisis?

Statistics show that most homeless are men. But more and more women and children are joining them as families lose their jobs, and with them, the ability to pay rent. This is a cold, and dangerous way to live.

While I took these photos in Colorado Springs, I'm sure they are indiscernible from any other city in the country.

FHAs "Flip Rule" is Changing

Have you heard? FHA is changing it's rule about holding property for more than 90 days before a buyer can use FHA financing. According to the HUD website it is a temporary situation and will have strict guidelines. The new rules will be effective February 1, 2010 and will sunset in one year unless extended. It will apply to bank owned properties, and HUD owned properties as well as privately owned properties. Additional details are available to read on the HUD website.

This should be helpful to get more homes in need of TLC, fixed up, on the market and sold to new homeowners.
