Green Cove Springs hosted a Memorial Day Festival today in Spring Park. The activities took place behind City Hall in the riverfront Park. Green Cove Springs was founded in the 1800s as a popular tourist destination. When the railroad extended to Miami, the town lost its tourist base, but the sleepy town is poised for growth when the real estate market turns.
The Parade of Flags was a sober reminder of the sacrifice of the brave men and women we remember today who gave their all in defense of freedom.

memorial day: Tribute to My Father in Law

My Father-in-law joined the Navy at age 18 and served in Key West, FL and other places, before shipping out to the South Pacific in WWII. He is still with us at age 90. He talks about some of his life in the war but there is much that he chooses not to share. His was a brave and self-sacrificing generation who grew up in the Great Depresssion and then found their youth seized by a war. They didn't complain.
