This is something you simply must try to do in the next several days. St. Augustine is hosting El Galeón until June 3, as it stops in four ports in Florida in commemoration of Juan Ponce de León’s voyage to find the Fountain of Youth 500 years ago. The Spanish replica galleon set sale from Puerto Rico April 1 and has visited Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Cape Canaveral, and now Jacksonville as its last Florida port.
El Galeón is 170 feet long and weighs 495 tons. The ship is a wooden replica that was in the West Indies fleet of the Spanish Armada. It is owned by a Foundation in Spain, and will travel more than 900 nautical miles with a crew of 28 in just the same manner as it would in the 16th century.
Ponce de León was the Governor of Puerto Rico, then part of the Spanish empire. He set sail to find riches and possibly the fountain of youth. When he saw land on April 5, 1513, he named it La Florida.
The tour is to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Spanish explorers.

www.vivaflorida.org. El Galeón houirs are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the St. Augustine City Marina. Tickets cost $8 for children age 12 and under and $15 for adults.
