I know, I know! It is August, not January.  Here in Kentucky though school started today and it has that New Year's kind of feeling to it.  New goals to achieve new successes.  Goals are tricky though no matter what they are.  I shared a few tips about effective goal setting in an article (Our Speakers With Spark monthly column) that was published in The News Enterprise today.  I absolutely know that they will help anyone struggling with the process. They are tried and true and will help if you stick to the plan!

You can give the article a read here!  Enjoy and happy goal setting!

I thought I would share a positive thought for today!  Each day we have a choice to make the day whatever we want it to be. Hope this helps you find a little perspective.Happy Everything

Choices, choices, choices!  There are so many options to choose from on a daily basis it could almost drive a person crazy!  In this day and age it seems like there is a different option for everything and some choices seem limitless.  There is still one choice you have that really doesn't change - it is the same one everyday.  That is to decide whether you will have a positive day or a negative day.

You may be scratching your head thinking that it is not entirely up to you.  Circumstances in life can cause many reactions and not all of them are positive.  In a perfect world we all wake up and have an ideal day - no worries, no stress, no problems - just peace, love and harmony.  We don't live in a perfect world though, so how do you keep the worries, stress, and problems from keeping you from having a negative day.

Every once in a while, we need a little pep talk.  If our spirits are lifted, then we are more productive, create better relationships with clients and generally have a better quality of life.  I think that it all starts with how we think of ourselves.  Here is an article I would like to share that may help you achieve the life you desire!

Have you heard?  There is a growing epidemic sweeping our nation.  It is claiming the well being of thousands of people and is changing the shape of our society.  It is altering lives and not necessarily for the better.  What is the cause of this growing epidemic?  That would be an overabundant lack of self respect.

Some of you reading this may have an overabundance of self respect and I congratulate you!  Stay the course and continue to flourish!  You probably do not need to continue to read this article either - which is aimed for the rest of us who may think we respect ourselves or want to respect ourselves but may not even know where to start.

The way we view ourselves affects everything we do and say, how we interact with others and how successful we can become.  Respect is a healthy attitude of reverence and awe for the existence of something.  Respecting yourself is recognizing that you are a gift merely by your birth.  You are worthy and are an awesome creation!  When you recognize those two ideas as true it helps achieve a higher level of self esteem.  Self respect is like the glue that holds together your self esteem.  It is difficult to achieve high levels of esteem without a healthy dose of respect first.

When you embrace your worthiness, other things fall into place.  They way you treat yourself and take care of yourself for one.  That also translates into how you treat and relate to others.  Your achievement increases because you believe you can do it and are worthy of success.  If all people walked around with this kind of attitude can you imagine how different our world would be?  It is unfortunate that self esteem peaks for most people in the third grade!  Third Grade!!! That doesn't bode well for us, but the good news is that it can change.

The most difficult part about respecting yourself is that no one else can do it for you - just you.  The great news is that you can do something about it.  Here are a few ideas to help you achieve a healthier attitude towards yourself.

  1. Celebrate your creation.  You were created therefore, no matter what anyone else says - YOU ARE AMAZING and certainly worthy of respect!
  2. Quit the negative self talk.  Recently I spoke with a group of teen agers and we did an exercise where they looked into a mirror and had to describe what they saw.  They all had faces that they could describe and yet the majority of the descriptions focused on the negative items that they saw.  Interestingly enough, the things they did like about their faces were not described in positive terms like the negative aspects that they shared.  There weren't "pretty eyes", but there were plenty of "ugly noses".  This doesn't apply to just your physical features either.  Your job performance, your attitude ... the list goes on and on.
  3. Express and truly feel gratitude - for your creation, your blessings, your highs and your lows.  If you were to make out a list of all of the "things" that you possess or were given, they would surely outweigh the negatives.  Unfortunately we concentrate so much on the negative things we do not like experiencing, we neglect to respect the positive and healthy things in our life.  Being grateful for both automatically lends to respecting each situation for what it is and confidence in your ability to weather any storm.  Emerging from dark places and horrible situations is plenty to lend momentum to your self respect and what you can accomplish.
  4. If you are feeling like the odds are stacked up against you and your life is overcome by difficult and seemingly impossible circumstances, there is still hope.  Really look at the situation and find purpose to your pain.  Even the most desperate situations have a purpose and you are a part of that.  Look for the lessons and learn from them.  You will emerge stronger and wiser and certainly worthy of praise.
  5. Take care of yourself - body, mind and soul.  Take steps everyday that lend to your healthy state of mind and body. Get enough sleep, eat better, exercise, dream, participate, and believe.  By feeding your body and mind with what makes it stronger and clearer, you will feel better about yourself.  When you are too tired to care about anything, your self respect is on the top of that list.  If you are feeling guilty because you ate a whole box of Oreos, it is hard to celebrate your creation.  When you stop believing that you can do anything, you can't.  A healthy mind and body can change everything for you.

Remember too that you can be a model for those around you.  You can lead by example and hopefully change the trend of those who do not highly respect themselves.  It is a contagious feeling and who wouldn't like to feel good about who they are and what they can achieve?  Don't forget - YOU ARE AMAZING - and worthy of respect!

This article was published in the Speakers With Spark column of The News Enterprise.

Prepare to think  ....Jeff Peden, The Great Ideas Guy

Every once in a while you get the opportunity to spread the news about a touching event that can mean so much to so many.  I have come across one of those events and thought I would share it with all of you.

My friend and fellow speaker, Denise Taylor is a brave mother who has endured trials with joy and triumph that she learned through the legacy left her by her 15 year old daughter Jonnae, who dies at 15 from Leukemia.  You can read all about their story or watch the video at www.weGETto.com, but suffice to say it will touch your heart.  My hope is that it will leave in you a burning desire to make a difference in the lives of all sick children.  You can begin with the support of The Wack Attack that is scheduled for June 8th and is not limited to any one location.

Wack Attack

Here is the story about how Wacky Wednesday and the Wack Attack came to be as told by Denise in her blog:

For those of you who may be visiting this blog for the first time or unaware of the Wacky Wednesday program Jonnae and I had envisioned creating, let me give you a brief recap. She was going through a bone marrow transplant, had been in the hospital for a couple of months, and received an email about spirit week back home at her school (we were in Cincinnati a couple hours away) During spirit week students were encouraged to dress Wacky on Wednesday.

It is said we are motivated by one of two things - desperation or inspiration. This was a case where I was motivated by the former; desperate to give Jonnae (us) something to smile about. I suggested we could get wacky wherever we are and asked if she'd like to create a wacky look for me. She lit up like a Christmas tree. Her spirit filled smile had a way of creating a contagious joy. As she grabbed the eyebrow pencil out of my makeup bag and drew a unibrow on my forehead and blacked out one of my teeth, we both shifted our focus from the seriousness and stress of her sickness to the silliness. Turns out laughter truly is the best medicine and the side effects are great.

She proceeded to give me ridiculous ponytails and pulled items out of my wardrobe that should never be worn together. I blacked out one of her teeth and put a tattoo smack in the middle of her forehead. Head to toe we looked ridiculous. So much so, my husband didn't want to exit the elevator with us to indicate we were 'together' lol.

I must admit, when the kids left the house in years prior, dressed abnormally for the spirit week's Wacky Wednesday, I never thought, "Wow! That looks like fun. I want to do that!" 3 years into getting Wacky on Wednesday, I still don't always embrace the fun that can be wrapped in getting wacky. It's not a great deal of fun, nor am I comfortable, having people look at me like I'm a 'wack job' instead of the visionary behind weekly healing doses of worldwide laughter through Wacky Wednesdays.

It's been a great experience for me. I used to talk myself into being 'brave' and just doing it. Then I'd walk into a child's hospital room and be reminded, bravery isn't leaving your ego and vanity at the house to go out into the world wacky, it's within these walls as our babies and young ones fight courageously to live. It's interesting to think, as a country, we embraced Casual Fridays to be comfortable and bless ourselves, but we'll opt out of being Wacky on Wednesday at the thought of being uncomfortable to bless others.

So with that thought in mind, will you risk being uncomfortable to bless others and have a "Wack Attack" with us on June 8? Any one of us has seriousness and stress in our lives that could be replaced with silliness for a day ... and bless us with healing as a result of having done it. We are celebrating Jonnae's 3rd "Heavenly Birthday" one day early with a special Wacky Wednesday where we're attacking whomever, wherever, with wackiness :D Here locally in the Kentuckiana area, we've got a gym, bank, orthodonist office, workshop facility and restaurants participating and sponsoring the Wack Attack. Staff, tellers, and servers will be dressed wacky and each establishment is doing something to raise funds for the furthering of Wacky Wednesday. These funds will be used to stock the cart we have for supplying the patients with wacky items, printing materials for promotion of the program and training under Patch Adams in November. In hearing about Wacky Wednesdays he's invited me to tour with his group to Russian orphanages, clinics and hospitals for two weeks. And he's promised to implement Wacky Wednesday in his hospital, Gesundheit Institute, when it opens. (they broke ground last September) I can't grow this program without your support.

If you live in the Kentuckiana area you can get a Wack Attack shirt from me for 12.00 (just reply to this blog or shoot me a message) while out of towners can order the white tshirt at http://www.cafepress.com/WackyWednesdays (the front of the tshirt is the design displayed at  the top of this blog with We GET To Celebrate Jonnae Taylor - Heavenly Birth June 9, 2008 on the back) Whether local or not, whether you go to www.weGETto.com to make a donation, wear a tshirt , dress wacky, come down to The Creative Workshop in Louisville for the telethon or go to the participating restaurants, there are so many ways for you to celebrate the life and spirit of Jonnae and support and spread the word about Wacky Wednesday. As so many of you did with Jonnae's Celebration of life, whether here in town or not, I hope you'll join us!

Well everyone - you see the call to action!  You all are some of the most compassionate folks I know.  Let's make this Wack Attack the best ever and spread the word and dare to GET Wacky!

I had the good fortune of traveling to California this week.  While I was there I had the opportunity to meet with two amazing women whom I admire greatly ... Cathy Lee and Lori Kim Polk.  It was wonderful to meet them in person and get to know them even more than we had on the web.  For as much as I enjoy the social media relationships I have forged, there is nothing that can beat a face to face conversation and really connecting.

As a stager it was interesting to me to hear about their staging businesses and the real estate climate in their areas.  It is so different from my experience.  That is one of the reasons I loved getting to see them - it gave me an opportunity to define the market and climate in my area.  Something that has seemed rather muddy at times to me, suddenly became much more clear.

There is a natural inclination to compare business practices and real estate markets.  What I realized though is that it is pointless to do that.  While sharing ideas and exchanging business practices are really worthwhile, I realized that what works in California may not work in Kentucky and vice versa.  The desire to create what works for stagers in other areas, may just not be feasible or desired in my own.  The encouragement to keep achieving however cannot be underestimated.

This is another reason why I love AR.  Not only would I have never been introduced to these wonderful women, but I have access to all kinds of people, tools  and ideas.  The point is not to judge what you do based on other people's success or failures, but to utilize and possibly incorporatenthe experiences of those willing to share.  I enjoy learning what others are doing and love to share things that have worked for me.  While one business model does not fit all, it is nice to be exposed to so many of them.  The exposure to all them is like going to a convention and re-energizing everytime I log in.

The relationship building that blogging provides is so unique.  Never in a million years would I have imagined that I would make friends all over the world.  I just happened to have finally met in person two of the more fabulous women I know, but there are many other people I have "met" only online.  It was empowering to hear about Cathy and Lori Kim's successes, to learn from them and really get to know them.

What a blessing AR has been - not just as a business builder, but a relationship builder!

Where there is a will there is a way!  On one of my Facebook pages not too long ago, someone posted that the opportunities for business in their area had "dried up"!  I can't imagine an area where every opportunity to showcase how you work and your level of professionalism have dried up, so I am going to give my two cents worth of ideas on ways to generate some new business!

Now this particular article is aimed at the smaller parts of the country that aren't as populated or progressive as some of the bigger cities.  I understand all too well the struggle of being a business owner in a location that isn't particularly progressive when it comes to anything - particularly real estate.  These are some ideas for Stagers out there who live in places where developing relationships with the community are the only way that their businesses may survive.  The small town environment is different when you have countless potential clients and more referrals than you can handle.

First and foremost Education is key!  When in doubt - teach them about what you do!  This may not make you a ton of money right off the bat, but it won't cost you anything either if you are bringing in business anyway.  By teach, I mean take three or four topics that you can develop into a SERIES of classes or workshops and offer them to the public.  For stagers it could be about staging or organizing or crafting or recycling home decor, or painting furniture, etc , etc ,etc.  The list is endless.  The series is important because then you keep them coming back. Plus once you wow them on the first one, you will see attendees from the first one bring someone to the next one.

You can charge a minimal fee for your time and expertise, but I would recommend partnering with other local businesses to share expenses is there are any.  Have a class at the Paint Supplier or at a local fabric store or a home decor store.  Most business owners are looking to drive people to their business - if offering a class in their business will do that, most will be open to it. You all end up being the hero when you offer information that becomes a trust building session for people that may turn into attendees into clients some day.

Here are a couple more class ideas for you:  seasonal decor, wall art placement, choosing the right colors, how to be a bargain shopper, organization tips and tricks, repurposing what you have, how to make customized window treatments from store bought curtains, curb appeal ideas (partner with a landscape company - the possibilities are endless!) Decor for the teenager, kid's room decor, How to create a spa like Master Bath, Lighting for the home, how to arrange wall art, etc.  Really these work - they may not bring you twenty new clients each session, but it is about building a relationship with your clients and potential clients.  This is a great way to do that.

Staging for Fall Class at Whitt's End

Staging For Fall Class Offered at Local Home    Decor Store Whitt's End

People like to "test drive" what they purchase as consumers.  They can do that in a variety of ways - test drive a car for instance, find references for you, check with the BBB, check out your web site or come and watch you work.  If you give them an opportunity to see how you work, then what better way to give them a glimpse at how good you are!  So ... try the education route - it doesn't have to cost you much and if you partner with other businesses, you are building alliances that will strengthen  both your businesses.

I would also try packaging.  For you stagers out there - we can easily break down the services we offer into smaller more manageable packages.  Instead of a whole house redesign - how about one room or even just one area of a room.  There are so many people that have the organization bug this time of year - offer a "Pantry Redesign" or "Closet Redesign". Take a couple of hours and redesign/organize a pantry.  If you do a great job with that small area - potential clients will imagine what you can do with the whole house.  When they go to sell their home they know exactly who to call.

Newlyweds are a huge market.  Think of it - you could go to bridal shows and set up a Newleywed Design package.  Melding two different styles into one that they can both appreciate is quite a task.  With the help of a trained professional - it is no problem.  It could even be something they register for.  How great is that?  The packages for this could be as small as Wedding Photo wall arrangements, to Master Bedroom Decor, to curb appeal to Closet organization to Choosing colors for the new home!  Endless possibilities!

Kid's Room Decor                   Home Office Staging

Children's Room Makeover Package                                    Home Office Staging Package

Why not try "Renovation" packages?  Need to update your bathroom and kitchen hardware - call XYZ Staging to help you choose the right look.  You don't need to offer to recreate the whole bathroom or kitchen, just break it down into manageable parts.  Having a hard time choosing flooring? An area rug to suit the new room?  Window treatment dilemma - try a stager!  If you add shopping time into that - it could be a huge help to renovators.  Make sure to add in your marketing that it pays to have a stager come on board - we understand the desires of home buyers and will gear our decisions based on what will help you sell in the future as well as what will make you feel at home today.

There is also another avenue that has helped me tremendously and that is to provide information in written form in the newspaper or another local publication.  I write a monthly column for our local paper and it is a 600-700 word article with my picture and contact information on the front page of the Homes section once a month.  I can't tell you what kind of advertising that can do for you.  The name/face recognition is awesome and saves me a ton of money every year.  I have been writing that column for over two years now and if I were to purchase the equivalent space for advertising it would have cost me over $30,000.  That is a deal, but better yet it has helped establish me as an expert in the field.  People trust that I will provide them good information.

In the past I have also written articles for newsletters for certain community organziations.  You could write a brief article for the local women's club newsletter - what an audience!  It provides you an avenue that makes you the expert and wants to help out the community.  Win/Win!!!!

If writing isn't your forte, try a two minute spot on the radio or community channel on tv.  Do a "Second with a Stager" or something catchy and give people a staging tip or a weekly report on what home decor items are on sale and where, or something like that.  The more people see you or hear you the better.  You can even start creating some YouTube videos and posting them.  People want to check you out before hiring you!

Another way to package is to team up with an Assisted Living facility and offer "Move in Consultations".  Create a package for new resdients to help them downsize into the new facility.  This is a tremendous help to them and their families.  You can always offer packages for senior staging, but be prepared while this type of staging will be worthwhile it is extremely draining and emotional.  I have found it to be utterly worth it, but it will take some out of you.

Above all else I think you have to spend some time in the community and with other business owners and listen to what people's needs are.  Maybe there is a big event going on in the community that will be attracting several out of town guests.  Maybe you could develop a package for "Guest Room Makeovers".  That could include a guest room one day spruce up/redesign with tips on what to include in a basket to make the stay a memory that will last.  Maybe you offer to create a Hospitality basket for guests for a fee.  Find out what the people need and respond with offering what services you provide that can help them out.

You can also try the fundraiser route.  People get sick and tired of having the same old bake sales and car washes.  What if you had an organization sell staging packages (you can come up with whatever you like) and you donate a portion back to the organization that is selling them for you.  That is truly a win/win for everyone involved.  Who needs wrapping paper?  People want tips on how to pull down their wallpaper! :)

Okay - so those are a few things I have been thinking about and thought I would share.  Having limited clientele is difficult and these ideas might just help you establish a great relationship with the potential clients in your area.  With any luck this will be a jumping off point to your own creativity.  Please comment with additional ideas of things you have tried or would like to try.  If we support each other - it helps all of us!

It appears that the season to reorganize is upon us.  Whether I pick up a newspaper, magazine or an advertisement for any store, tools for organization seem to be front and center.  Even at Corvin's Furniture this week, there have been many customers who have come in inquiring about bookshelves, shelving units and file cabinets.    It seems that resolutions to organize are as prevalent as weight loss resolutions this year.

Retailers across the country are advertising their attractive storage containers and cool tools that will help you achieve organization with style.  I must admit, I have even fallen into the trap - if I purchase those file folders, surely I will file the papers away, right?  If I have clear shoe boxes with colored lids, then I will always want to put my shoes away where they belong, right?   Having the cool "stuff" doesn't mean I am going ot be organized though.   folders

The point I am trying to make is that more important than the containers and tools are the systems behind the organization.  It doesn't matter how wonderful and attractive your storage and tools are if you aren't going to use them.  So let's take a moment or two and focus on the process of getting organized, rather than the containers.

In developing a system for organization, the best place to start is to write out your goals.  Yes, WRITE them out.  It may seem elementary, but seeing on paper what you want to accomplish will actually help you develop ways to make it happen.  Do you want to have a streamlined pantry?  Does your linen closet look like a tornado hit it?  Are you tired of the mud room looking like a fortress of coats and shoes?  Start out with all of the areas that you would like to work better for you and write down the large goal for each.

Good goal setting takes more than writing out the desired result.  Most goals are not achieved because they were not specific enough to sorganized pantryee through to completion.  Goals must be measurable and attainable.  So after writing  "Organize Pantry", then I would list smaller goals that will help me achieve the large one.  Maybe I would write "clear pantry of all expired food items".  Once I have achieved that goal, my next might be, "separate canned goods from boxed foods in pantry".  What is great about setting and achieving the small goals is that as soon as you begin you will see results.  From there you will naturally organize the boxed goods in one area and the canned goods in another.  Now you have really achieved three separate goals that work towards your big one of having an "Organized Pantry".

Most organization projects are so big and are so overwhelming that you never actually start.  Starting with a checklist of smaller tasks or goals that are attainable and deliver visible results will actually encourage you to keep going.  Remember that once you have achieved a goal - whether a small or a large one - it is important to reward yourself.  Maybe that means eating a snack, or maybe it is finally getting to purchase the matching Tupperware to use in the pantry.  What ever the tangible reward is, it is vital for you to keep up with that if you want to keep the momentum flowing.

Take some time to write out your goals for your home or office this year.  Make them specific, realistic and attainable and do not forget to reward yourself.  When you start out this way, it will hopefully set you up to develop some systems that will keep you organized.  It may even give you the chance to purchase some of those great looking storage solutions and actually use them!  Good luck and happy organizing!
