LEAF it to me !!!

So the last of the leaves fell on our front yard last week, and we assembled the troops in our house (well Sargent Spencer, and Deputy Daddy) and grabbed the rakes to take care of business !

We made this a covert operation, and took on the mission under the cover of nightfall !

It was a challenging event, as the huge trees around our home seemed to 'extra leafy' this year ...

... but the dynamic duo were NOT to be beat !!!

Although when the leaf piles started get up to our chins, we did have to regroup and bring in reinforcements....

... so Spencer called in his best girlfriend Jordyn, and then all was well !!!

We finished the job with flying colors, and now we are leaf-free until the Spring !

Get Your Header On! (Good Graphics Lead to Great Branding)

Marian provides a great focus on a topic that we sometimes overlook here, and that's the value of everyone's "Blog Header" !

Below she highlights the key elements to a good header, and although I am grateful that she mentioned mine, I am now going to look into it further and see if I can improve my own that little bit more !!!

This is great advice here, so if you have a moment, pop over to her blog and leave a comment ... then write yourself a note to take a look at your header and see if it is hitting all the right targets !!

I've been thinking a lot about my header lately. It needed some updating (you can see my new one above). So I've been looking around Active Rain for examples of excellent headers.

What I have found is that a lot of people on Active Rain don't use headers. That's a real missed opportunity to further brand your business.

Of the folks that are using headers, they aren't maximing the benefit of a good branding header. Here are some guidelines to get you started.

Some elements of a good header include:

High Quality Graphics - Usually a single image works best. Try using a professionally taken stock photo image.

Logo or identifying text - The text should quickly brand the agent, company or theme of the blog

Proper size - Most of the best headers are 950-960 pixels wide

Contrast - Good contrast between the image and the text. Colors that are too similar lose their effectiveness and are more difficult to read.

Here are some examples of excellent headers within the Active Rain community:

Active Brad's Blog

This single image makes a strong metaphorical statement that is reinforced by the text.

Gary Woltal's Blog

Though multiple images are used in a collage effect, the images are high quality. The text and graphics reinforce a high end, classy branding image. Both the text and cityscape provide visual clues for the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Judy Jenning's Blog

A single image that is easily recognizable to the audience through landscape details and accented by unique yet clean contrasting text reinforces the geographic location of seaside Cape Cod.

Chris Brunner's Blog

A superbly high quality image with minimalist text where both the text and graphic reinforce the subtle Active Rain metaphor. The addition of the Blog author's name adds to the branding.

Charles Perkins Blog

This header is not overly flashly but excellent for its clean professional look. The use of easily recogizable landmarks add to the branding of this Seattle CPA.

Sheldon Neal's Blog

Sheldon Neal has done a truly outstanding job with branding in this header. We know the community he serves (NJ) which he adds depth to through his bridge metaphor and he also sets readers expectation of his abilities with his tagline.

The big man is paying a visit to Maywood, NJ on December 19th !

He is scheduled to visit Maywood Station to take time out of his busy schedule for the 8th annual "Santa at Maywood Station" event !

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 19 Santa will be at 269 Maywood Ave., Maywood in Maywood NJ.

Childrens Books For the Holidays for the less fortunate

Things to do in the Fall - Part 1 "Make Cookies" !

Well the Fall is well settled in, and in many parts of the country that means the weather and daylight hours have turned for the worse !

So what do you do when weather may not permit you to go outside as much ?

Well today's example is something you can do in your pajamas.

Make and Decorate Cookies !!!

Now it doesnt apply only to those of you with kids - although of course, making cookies with kids is one of the greatest indoor activites, as they love to help, they love to make a mess, and they love to eat the final product !!!!!

But if you dont have kids like our friend Jason Sardi - or at least any that he is revealing - then you can still take an hour in the kitchen with your sweetie - AND MAKE COOKIES !!

... it's quality time together, it's always fun whoever you are sharing it with, and for 60 minutes, you can put aside the fast pace of your nonstop cellphone, and create something fun, for very little cost !

... and then of course your home will smell ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS for hours after with that cookie smell wafting round your home !!!!

Here are the ones we made today - quick quiz, can you spot the five that my wife decorated, and the FOUR that my son Spencer decorated !?!?!?!?!?! :o)
