shirley parks: Everyone is happy today... - 09/22/09 02:46 PM
Everyone in San Antonio is happy today.
After a record-setting brutally hot summer, it rained in San Antonio today.  Since I didn't have any important morning plans, my sweet husband got up early, took care of the pets, brewed coffee, and opened the outside door to our bedroom.  I slept like a baby 'til 9:20 when I awoke to the cozy sound of soft rain falling and the feel of the cool outdoor air on my face.  Bliss...
The high temperature today was only about 75 degrees and right now it is 66 degrees on our patio.  What a wonderful first day of Fall it … (20 comments)

shirley parks: What's that wet stuff falling from the sky? - 09/09/09 03:05 PM

"Well, I love a rainy nightI love a rainy nightI love to hear the thunderWatch the lightningWhen it lights up the skyYou know it makes me feel good..." -Eddie Rabbit
It rained today! Glorious raindrops falling from the sky!  That may not sound like a big deal to you but it sure is if you live in San Antonio.  I don't remember when we last had a good rain. Summer was hot and dry and the city implemented water restrictions.  You should see my landscaping... I take that back; I wouldn't want you to see my poor, dry, brown plants.  We … (19 comments)

shirley parks: What's this in my mailbox already?! - 08/24/09 10:10 AM
Last week I opened up my mailbox and was surprised to find a harbinger of the upcoming Christmas season, my first Christmas catalog of 2009.
This first catalog arrived the week of August 17, before school started, before Labor Day, Halloween, or Thanksgiving.  By Christmas Eve I will have a big stack of catalogs.  What a waste!
Oh, the catalog is filled with 200 pages of stuff, tchatchkes, gift items of every kind for yourself or anyone on your gift list... men's stuff, women's stuff, kid's stuff.  Lots and lots of stuff.  Silly stuff, cute stuff, useful stuff, tacky stuff.
I don't like getting … (18 comments)

San Antonio Neighborhoods Series ~ Monte Vista
Monte Vista is included in the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest such historical district in the country.  The area is located less than 2 miles from downtown San Antonio and borders Trinity University.
Monte Vista prospered and blossomed during San Antonio's "Gilded Age" between 1890 and 1930 when the city emerged from being just an outpost for cattle drives and became the place where many rich people, particularly cattle barons and oilmen, started having elegant homes built in which to live and raise their families.  Instead of the usual Spanish style architecture, San … (5 comments)

San Antonio Neighborhoods ~ King William
The King William National Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It carries much historical and cultural importance and is protected by city ordinances.
A little bit of history:  The King William area was originally farmland, owned by the Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) and irrigated by acequias flowing from the San Antonio River.  By the early 1800's the missions were fully secularized, and the farmland was bought, sold, and divided into tracts by land speculators beginning in the 1840's.
One of the earliest settlers was Carl Guenther, a German … (9 comments)

Tax free shopping holiday begins tomorrow, August 21.
This year for the first time school supplies have been added to the tax-free shopping list. This should help many parents save by shopping during the upcoming tax free holiday, which runs Friday through Sunday.

New this year will be a tax … (11 comments)

Terrell Hills
A little bit of history:  Looking back from the vantage point of 2009, I find this story to be quite amusing.  In 1919, a group of 6 families and 3 bachelors organized with the goal of emigrating from the City of San Antonio and settling in a "remote rural area."  They selected a 24 acre tract that was formerly Terrell Farms (which now lies in the heart of San Antonio.) The southern boundary was Terrell Road, Garraty Road to the north, and western border was Eldon Road. The eastern border was Fort Sam Houston and what is now Harry … (7 comments)

shirley parks: San Antonio Neighborhoods Series: Alamo Heights - 08/13/09 03:05 PM
Alamo Heights is one of the most, if not the most, prestigious neighborhoods in San Antonio.  It was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1922 so it is a town or suburb within a city and is located only 2 miles from downtown.  It has a rich heritage and is a very desirable neighborhood with a hometown feel to call home, if you can afford it.
Many people are attracted by the easy access of Alamo Heights to San Antonio's business district, shopping, and entertainment choices.  The area is well known for its charm, family friendly atmosphere, and excellent schools.  For golfers, … (15 comments)

BRAKE WORKS
My husband, Stephen, has known Ray Gruetzner, the owner of Brake Works on Nacogdoches Rd. since 1987. Stephen and his late wife relocated here from the Dallas area and bought a house next door to Ray.  We have since moved from that house to a smaller house in the same neighborhod but we still turn to Ray for our car care needs.  Although the name of the business is Brake Works, they also take care of other car repair and maintenance issues.  Ray and his son also own a second Brake Works at 281 and Bitters.
