The Lost Maples State Natural Area will soon be expanded by more than 700 acres, land acquired from a neighboring ranch. The owner of the new property has taken great care to preserve and protect the land in it's natural, unspoiled state. The Can Creek watershed is located on the new property. Trails will be open for hiking through the canyons of the addiition in 2012. Presently there are 16 miles of trails available for hiking. The most popular time of year to explore Lost Maples is in the fall when the native big-tooth maple trees are showing off their spectacular red and gold leaves. Park staff (8 comments)
It's worth a trip downtown to the King William District to enjoy breakfast, brunch, or lunch at the Guenther House. While you are there check out the museum, located upstairs, which houses antique baking accessories, cookie cutters, and Dresden china plates, as well as other items. You can view photos of the building and grounds and learn more about the history of the Guenther House at www.guentherhouse.com . (20 comments)
shirley parks: ~Tony & Eva's New Home~ - 06/10/09 11:34 AM
Recently I read that Eva Longoria and Tony Parker's home in Champions Ridge was for sale and blogged about it, ~Tony Parker and Eva Longoria's home for sale~. Unfortunately, I didn't have a buyer candidate for this beautiful home and I read today that the home now has a buyer. That was pretty quick! Actually, I had a buyer from California who was interested but they decided to move near family in Florida instead. Tony and Eva will be enjoying their new 10,000 square feet Mediterranean style home in the secluded, gated community of Anaqua Springs. The green-built home is reported to be valued at $7 million and sits on 2.3 acres. (10 comments)
shirley parks: Life's Little Inconveniences~It's All OK! - 06/07/09 11:53 PM
We waited about 40 minutes outside for a table at brunch yesterday. It was hot yesterday but he grounds of this historic museum/restaurant are beautiful and the shade of the live oak trees kept us cool pretty comfortable. So that was ok. After we were finally seated, I ordered a pecan Belgian waffle with maple syrup and was told there was an extra charge for pure maple syrup. That was ok. While we were waiting for our order, I noticed a small waiting area where we could have possibly waited inside. Oh well, that was ok. When our order arrived, my waffle was covered (14 comments)

shirley parks: Go ahead and complain... You'll be glad you did! - 06/05/09 05:08 PM
Have you ever wanted to complain about something... but then just let it go? Whenever I experience something that is annoying, unfair, or just Not Right, I usually say "I am going to write a letter" of complaint but then I never do. Today was different and I am kind of pleased with myself for being a good citizen. This morning as I entered Loop 410 East near IH-10, I merged into traffic behind a truck of some sort. I soon noticed newspapers lifting merrily into the air out of the top of the truck and raining down on the oncoming (32 comments)

shirley parks: Natural garden pest repellents and butterfly attractants - 05/31/09 10:38 PM
Some garden predators are repelled by the same herbs that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Mints plants repel ants (great for vegetable gardens!), aphids, cabbage moths, fleas, and many others. At the same time it attracts earthworms which are "a gardener's best friend." To attract a wide variety of butterflies and hummingbirds, plant some of these around your garden: bergamont, dill, and fennel. ARTEMISIA Snakes don't like artemesia or common wormwood. Artemisia also repels aphids, flea beetles, flies, moths, slugs, and snails. BASIL is one of the best summer-growing herbs. It's scent drives off flies, mosquitoes, and other pests. HOREHOUND repels blister beetles. These beetles can invade your tomatoes. LEMON BALM can (11 comments)
shirley parks: not so Speechless Sunday~Seriously, I can still be a a KID at times!!! - 05/31/09 11:58 AM
Inspired by Sheldon's post this morning, Seriously ... Can you still be a KID at times ????? , I am sharing a bit of the last "kid" fun I had which was last summer when I took my granddaughter to the Great Wolf Lodge and waterpark in Grand Mound, Washington. There are more fun things there for kids in addition to the waterpark. I allowed my two daughters to tag along (JK girls.) It was a lot of fun for all four of us. Now it's time for more kid fun this year. hmmm... what fun plan can I put together this year?

shirley parks: ~Facebook & Grades~ - 05/30/09 10:37 PM
According to a new study by doctoral candidate Aryn Karpinski of Ohio State University and Adam Duberstein of Ohio Dominican University, college students who use Facebook have significantly lower grade-point averages (GPAs) than those who do not. The study will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association on April 16. The study surveyed 219 undergraduate and graduate students and found that GPAs of Facebook users typically ranged a full grade point lower than those of nonusers - 3.0 to 3.5 for users versus 3.5 to 4.0 for their non-networking peers. Karpinski says that the study does (8 comments)
shirley parks: Monday is the extended deadline for filing a property tax protest! - 05/30/09 10:18 PM
A friend of ours got her 2009 tax appraisal and was surprised to see that her assessment had gone up by $6,000. We checked on the other homes in her neighborhood on the Bexar Appraisal District website and found that the majority of appraisals had been reduced by approximately $2,000. Her husband passed away a few months ago so this past year has been a difficult one. She was dismayed when she received the tax notification and made an appointment to protest the increase. The employee she met with refused to lower the assessment from the previous year but finally offered (2 comments)
You have accepted an offer on your house and it is time for the home inspection. Don't be nervous, be prepared. Here are a few tips to make a the inspection go more smoothly: • First of all, leave the utilities connected, even if the house is vacant. A home inspector requires access to the water, gas, and electricity to be able to test the appliances, furnace, hot water heater, air conditioner, plumbing, etc. If the inspector arrives and the utilities are turned off, the inspection will have to be rescheduled. • Give your house a good cleaning before the inspection. shirley parks: Before You Start Looking for a House Do This - 05/24/09 10:06 PM
If you will do one simple thing before you start searching for a home, it will make the entire process go much more smoothly. A pre-approval letter is required by most sellers to be submitted with an offer. Since you don't want any surprises when you meet with your lender, you should order a free credit report from all three credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian. Just go to www.annualcreditreport.com and order it online. You can do this once a year and it doesn't cost a cent. You should be able to get your credit report right away. Look through it carefully for any (4 comments)

shirley parks: ~New Garden Homes~South Texas Medical Center~ - 05/24/09 08:18 AM
Recently I have had requests for homes convenient to the South Texas Medical Center that are east of IH-10 between Loop 1604 and Loop 410. Within this area lie well established neighborhoods with homes set of lots with mature trees and landscaping. Some of the homes for sale here have been updated with features you would expect to find in a new construction house and some have not been updated. Often I see homes in the MLS that state that the home is updated and yet when I view the home, it appears to be updated very little, if at all. Some buyers (0 comments)
shirley parks: Memorial Day Quotes - 05/24/09 12:16 AM
This evening in church our pastor asked everyone who has served in the military to stand and be recognized. Of course, with this being a military town with a lot of active duty and retired military personnel, there were many people standing. Here are a few Memorial Day quotes I want to share: For love of country they accepted death... ~James A.
