North Idaho has a rich mining history of silver, gold, lead and zinc. 
Be careful where you step.  It never fails to amaze me when I am out hiking around and come across a mine adit.  There are over 5000 old abandoned mines in the North state.  The bureau of lands management have been actively sealing up old abandoned mines.  These turn of the century mine adits have been long since forgotten and rotting timbers and weathered soil can cause safety hazards for curious explorers.   Recently a couple of the dilapidated mine entrances were sealed by the Clark Fork Idaho campus.
