hurricane season: Another quiet hurricane season ends in Florida - Insurance rates to go UP! - 12/02/08 01:17 AM
Back in 2004, Florida was hit by three hurricanes in six weeks. It was a freak of nature! Central Florida had not had a direct hit for 40 years before that.
In 2005 there was one major storm - again, nothing in Central Florida. In 2006 and 2007 there was nothing at all.
Each time, rates went up. Now the 2008 season has come to an end and Florida was hit by Tropical Storm Fay which certainly caused some flooding, but overall another quiet season - the third one in a row.
And so the insurance companies are once again telling … (8 comments)

hurricane season: 2008 Hurricane predictions are out! - 04/12/08 01:03 AM

For a man who has been dramatically wrong for the past three years, you have to admire the chutzpah of Dr William Gray from Colorado State University's forecast team - because he has done it again and again he has predicted a dramatically above normal Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Now I guess I don't really have a problem with an old man continuing to try and be a fortune teller - except that it has an effect on all kinds of things - not least of which is insurance premiums.

hurricane season: Hurricane season is over - storms were named incorrectly - 12/01/07 02:57 PM
Now this seems innocent enough on face value right? A few of the seasons storms getting names when they really didn't actually deserve names? What could be wrong with that?
Well simplistically, this is going to hit you in the pocket while at the same time making the forecasters not look quite as stupid as they actually are.
You see for two years now we've been promised more active seasons with more bad storms and they simply haven't materialised.
This year we were having storms get names even though they were referring to them as "sub-tropical" - I don't remember that happening before either.

hurricane season: This week on the radio - 07/30/07 07:22 PM
Once again this week, hurricane forecasters have reduced their dire predictions for the 2007 atlantic hurricane season. This happened at the same time last year and the whole thing makes you start to wonder why each year since 2004 we have received such ominous warnings at the start of the season. (Hurricane season runs June to November).
Here in Florida we know that sooner or later we will again be hit by another hurricane. We choose to live here with that knowledge because the good massively outweighs the bad. Before that summer of 2004 it had been 40 years since Central Florida … (0 comments)

hurricane season: Hurricane Season - State to help pay for retrofit - 07/01/06 07:26 AM
Today is a very important day. Legislation came into effect in Florida which basically means that the State of Florida will match you Dollar for dollar up to $5,000 to improve your home from a Hurrican protection point of view.
Under the program, homeowners who have a homestead exemption on their property would be eligible for a free home-retrofit inspection by a qualified inspector.

Only homes built on-site and with an insured value of less than $500,000 would qualify, eliminating mobile homes from the program.

Along with single-family homes, multifamily buildings up to four units would be included in the program, as long as … (0 comments)
