property tax amendment: Florida Judge pulls Amendment 5 off the November ballot - 08/15/08 06:51 AM
One again the Florida Association of Realtors has backed a losing horse - with one heck of a lot of money raised by Florida Realtors themselves, but with NO QUESTION being asked of the Realtors before the money was spent!
Amendment Five was to appear on the Ballot in Florida in November and was in simplistic terms, a tax swap - property tax to be replaced by sales tax. It was placed on the ballot by the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission - a body which meets just once every 20 years!
Anyway, "The court finds that the ballot title and … (7 comments)

property tax amendment: Florida tax portability - deadline on Monday! - 03/01/08 02:11 PM
Heads up Floridians with Homesteaded property. you have until close of business on Monday to GO TO YOUR TAX OFFICE to apply for portability of Save Our Homes tax benefits.
If you sold a homesteaded property in 2007 and purchased a new one before January 1, 2008, then you are eligible to apply some or all of the tax benefits of Save Our Homes to your new home - BUT MONDAY MARCH 3 is the deadline.
My understanding is that next year, the portability will be automatic, but we have to wait and see. For now, Monday is your very last chance.
The application … (0 comments)

property tax amendment: Well here's a HUGE surprise! - 02/02/08 02:35 PM
Well I am truly shocked. This kind of thing simply NEVER happens so this is the source of my shock and surprise.
How could this be? Really it is so scary that I might just be losing faith
We have a politician - lots of them actually - who are saying something this week that is the opposite of what they said last week.
Exactly as predicted by me, passage of Florida's incredibly weak Property Tax Amendment seems to have lead to the likes of Governor Charlie Crist - a man who said "this is just a start" as he campaigned relentlessly to get … (11 comments)

property tax amendment: Cut property taxes NOW - 01/04/08 12:19 AM
Yes there is a way to cut people's property taxes and it can be done without the need for a supercomputer and also without the need to go out and hire a Math professor to explain it all.
Property taxes in Florida are an extremely serious issue and the Amendment that will be appearing on the ballot on January 29 doesn't deliver anything meaningful at all. In fact it is my opinion that it is dangerous for the people of Florida to pass it because it could lead to the Governor and the Legislature saying "we delivered tax relief and now we're … (31 comments)

property tax amendment: FAR President to answer questions - 12/20/07 11:11 AM
Florida Association of Realtors President Nancy Riley (pictured right) will be my guest on this week's Home Team Radio Show which broadcasts live to Central Florida at 12 noon Eastern each Sunday on 540 WFLA and worldwide at http://www.540wfla.com/
Nancy will be discussing Property Tax in the State of Florida with me and why for the second time FAR has thrown it's full weight (not to mention Realtor money) behind the latest version of the Amendment which has come from the Legislature.
The last version was thrown off the ballot by a judge - and the newest version is also now under legal … (7 comments)

property tax amendment: Florida's property tax back in chaos - 12/01/07 02:43 AM
It is hard to believe after a promise from the Governor; a regular session of the legislature and TWO special sessions (as a cost to the Florida tax payer of $40,000 a day), but the property tax issue simply will not go away.
The legislature finally agreed to put something incredibly weak on the ballot for January 29 which, if passed by the voters, will give the average Floridian a saving of $240.
Since then we have the Speaker of the House (who voted for it) urging Citizens not to approve that, but to put pressure on to get something else.
And now a … (12 comments)

property tax amendment: Politicians say yes, economists say no on tax cut boost to housing - 11/10/07 10:56 AM
If Florida voters approve the tax cut amendment on the ballot of January 29th next year, politicians are suggesting that the State's housing market will receive a major boost.
The cut will equal an average saving of $240 per household, but perhaps more important than that will be the tax savings homesteaders have built up that they will now be able to take with them.
But Hank Fishkind, an Orlando-based private sector economist suggests that at best, the portability arm of the package will have what he describes as a "marginal at best" effect on housing. Fishkind has served as an advisor to … (3 comments)

property tax amendment: This week's Home Team Radio Show - 11/03/07 03:36 PM
This week on The Home Team Radio Show I welcome State Representative Dean Cannon - the House's lead negotiator with the Senate in Florida over property tax reform.
And this will be our main topic of discussion after the legislature voted to put on the ballot an extremely weak and constitutionally questionable amendment for the people of Florida to vote for or against on January 29 of next year.
Clearly I will be putting the representative on the spot and so if you have a question we would love you to call in on 407 916 5400 or toll free on 1-866-916-5400.

property tax amendment: Property tax update for Floridians and others - 11/02/07 08:23 AM
None of us should be shocked anymore when Politicians fail to deliver what they promised to deliver. It is sad but true that this happens over and over again, and yet somehow there is still a small part of us that wants to believe what they say.
Right now they are trying to convince us that the latest version of the Property Tax amendment in Florida is a good thing and that we should all vote for it. The Governor in particular is pushing hard to have it accepted - but he has a reason for that too. His approval rating overall is … (2 comments)

property tax amendment: You CANNOT be serious!!!##@@$%^ - 10/30/07 08:17 AM
Unfortunately for Florida residents, the legislature was indeed serious with its quite frankly pathetic attempt to fulfill the Governor's promise of property taxes dropping "like a rock"
Last night at the 11th hour the House approved a "take it or leave it" proposal from the Senate. The Senate passed the motion and then adjourned meaning that they couldn't even take an amendment.
With the clock ticking (the 90 day prior to ballot rule coming into effect at midnight), the House - with a gun to its head - approved the Senate proposal which will mean savings for the average Floridian of $240!
The … (9 comments)

property tax amendment: What is going on?? - 10/27/07 04:18 PM
We all know about how famous Florida has become over the assorted chaotic voting problems. if I ever hear about another Hanging Chad....grrrrrr.
Well anyway, Florida seems intent on renewing it's membership of the "laughing stock of the nation" club with the potential for not one, but TWO conflicting amendments on the January 29 ballot for Property tax reform
You see the original proposal was so complicated that a judge threw it off the ballot and sent the legislature into a spin. The Senate appealed the Circuit Court Judge's decision to Florida's Supreme Court and we still don't have that decision.

property tax amendment: Entering the Twilight Zone - 10/25/07 02:09 AM
A few days ago I blogged about what I referred to as The magic roundabout which talked about the craziness taking place in Tallahassee regarding changes to Florida's property taxes.
Today was supposed to be the day of the big vote, but it became clear that there was no way that the Senate would approve the House plan and visa versa.
In the meantime, the people of Florida continue to suffer under high property taxes while the politicians continue to play politics.
This is in fact the second time through a Special Session (at a cost to the Florida taxpayer of $40,000 a day) … (1 comments)

property tax amendment: The magic roundabout - 10/23/07 08:43 AM
So they are at it again in Tallahassee! The House has passed a motion on property tax by a large margin and the Senate votes on it on Thursday. Currently there are indications that it will not pass. And even if it does, once again, confusion reigns supreme!
I would love to tell you what it all means, but I can't. I can paste a part of the summary in for you:
The Bottom Line
The SJR amendment eliminates the "lock-in effect" of Save Our Homes by allowing statewide portability for a period of two years after leaving the former homestead. It accelerates … (0 comments)

property tax amendment: This week's radio show - 09/29/07 12:07 PM
With so much going on in Florida this week, the radio show will be extremely busy to say the least! Apart from anything else we will have a special guest - State Senator Mike Haridopolos who has been at the center of the Property Tax debate and is also Chair of the Senate Tax and Finance Committee.
If you wish to pose questions to the Senator please call 407 916 5400 or toll free 1-866-916-5400. The show airs at 12 noon Eastern.
So what's with Property Tax? First of all the Governor promised real relief in his election campaign, immediately followed up … (5 comments)

property tax amendment: The politics of misleading - 09/29/07 08:45 AM
Well it is not unusual I guess (although very sad) to find politicians attempting to mislead the people. It happens all the time and indeed is happening a lot right now as the various presidential candidates jockey for position in the run up to the Primaries.
Hilary for example has been against all torture and now we find she is for some torture. Obama is against the war, but won't commit to having all US troops out of Iraq by the end of his first term in 2013. The Republicans are just as bad so I'm not picking on the Democrats … (2 comments)

property tax amendment: Senator Haridopolos to appear on my radio show - 09/27/07 07:46 AM
Senator Mike Haridopolos - Chair of the Florida Senate Tax and Finance Committee and someone at the very heart of the Property Tax debate in Florida, will be a guest on my radio show - The Home Team - this coming Sunday at Noon.
The Senator is actually a returning guest even though we gave him a hard time last time he was on - a credit to him.
The whole property tax issue is now in question in Florida after a Leon County Circuit Court Judge threw the amendment off the ballot in January because it was so confusing.
Senator Haridopolos is … (4 comments)

property tax amendment: Is Crist blowing in the wind? - 08/24/07 03:05 PM
Florida Governor Charlie Crist spoke to an audiance of Realtors this week. He already likes realtors because even though I have personally yet to meet a single one who is in favor of the property tax amendment that will appear on the ballot on January 29th next year, the florida Association of Realtors has pledged $1m to run a campaign in favor of the reform. This is true even though the president has told me that for her personally, Save Our Homes makes more sense. She also promised me that she would ensure that part of the amendment is heavily publicized … (1 comments)
