Sunday Morning Thoughts - 07/11/11 12:29 AM

So I'm puttering around on a cloudy, cool Sunday morning in my home in Gig Harbor, WA and I'm preparing to wash the glass door that goes from my kitchen to my deck. But, as I look a little closer I see this perfect kiss print left from my 12-month-old great-grandson who was here visiting a few days ago from out of town. I think the little smudge above the kiss must be his little nose print. :) I just couldn't bring myself to wash this off (and you have to understand I'm a little anal about clean windows), so … (4 comments)

Can It Be Done? - 07/09/11 02:52 AM

I'm going to put it "out there" to be able to work remotely somewhere warm for a month or two in the cold, dreary months of January and February. Can it be done? Does anyone do this? I do mostly short sales, so there's a way it could be done, but I would like some feedback. This has become a goal and everyone needs a goal, right?

It's Not All Doom and Gloom - 07/06/11 05:23 AM

INFO THAT HITS US WHERE WE LIVE...People wonder if housing is moving in the right direction, especially after April Housing Starts fell 10.6% to an annual rate of 523,000 units. But a closer look reveals the decline was due mostly to multi-family units, which are volatile month to month and actually up 6.6% from a year ago. Also, the biggest drop was in the South, which had been hit with severe tornados. Outside that region, starts were UP 5.5%! Homes under construction are at their lowest level since 1970, so some areas may rebound from shortages in the next few … (2 comments)

One Last Energy Saver - 07/04/11 11:47 AM

Small and new are best for refrigerators. Sure you can save money buying an old refrigerator for the office, but it can cost hundreds of dollars a year more in electricity compared to newer models. And if your don't really need a big fridge, you should know that some mini-refrigerators can run on less than a dollar a month of electricity. Get plug-in timers for the water cooler and coffee machine. Water coolers with a hot water tap and all coffee makers can use quite a bit of electricity over the course of a year. Put them on timers that … (1 comments)

Fourth of July in Gig Harbor, WA - 07/03/11 11:43 PM

Fourth of July fireworks will be back in full force on Henderson Bay in Gig Harbor, WA this year. The Henderson Bay Fireworks Committee has given the go-ahead to their contractor, Wolverine West Fireworks, to prepare a $27,000 show. In its 10th year, the show will commence on a commercial barge in the middle of the bay after one-year hiatus. Last year, the HBFC called off the show due to a lack of funding. The committee’s usual round of 100 letters, which requested donations from area residents, didn’t return enough to put on a show, and they sent … (0 comments)

More Energy Tips - 07/03/11 11:36 PM

Look for the Energy Star label on all new purchases. Energy Star is the federal government's program  for labeling all kinds of energy-saving products for home and business. Electronic office equipment with the Energy Star label uses at least 20% less energy than a standard model. Many Energy Star products also come with automatic power-save modes, so they don't have to be manually activated.

Standardize on laptop computers. Laptops consume up to 80% less energy than desktop computers. Trade in those desktops for laptops and you'll see impressive energy savings. For users who absolutely need a large monitor, buy them an LCD computer screen that plugs right into the laptop. There are many of these LCDs on the market for not much money.
