Tears of Joy Already - 05/27/08 03:23 PM
I've always been a huge fan of the College Station Independent School District.(CSISD)  I'll admit, I could be slightly biased as I graduated from A&M Consolidated High School.  When I graduated from Texas A&M, I was the first person in my family to graduate from college.  Now that my son Sean has been accepted into Notre Dame, I'll probably be even more biased.  The teachers at College Station ISD did a great job of preparing him for acceptance into a university.
Today, I am working from home in order to spend a little extra time with Sean.  He is a senior at A&M Consolidated … (2 comments)

OLD CAR - 05/27/08 11:51 AM
What do you think of when you think of Old Car?  Do you think about that old car you wish you hadn't sold? I had an old Trans Am that I really wish I hadn't sold.  Or.... do you think about fiduciary duties?  Remember in Agency class the acronym "OLD CAR"?
By law, real estate agents have fiduciary duties toward their clients - the people they are representing.  Agents are supposed to represent their client's best interests.  What are the fiduciary duties?

Students Decreasing - 05/27/08 12:34 AM
Did you know that the portion of the population in College Station that is made up of students is decreasing?
In 1990, 60% of the population was students aaccording to the City of College Station Planning and Development Services statistics.  Today, students make up approximately 50%.
Other interesting tidbits that I found on the site.
Since 1997, when the last Comprehensive Plan was adopted:
Our population in College Station has increased over 40%.
College Station annexed over 4,000 acres.
Over 5,000 new single family homes were built.  For more intersting statistics, be sure to check out the City of College Station's website.  http://cstx.gov/home/index.asp

Coffee with the Mayor - 05/27/08 12:13 AM
Last Friday, Ben White, the mayor of College Station hosted a coffee.  The real estate and development community were the special guests....which meant that he wanted to discuss issues that pertained to these groups.   According to the newspapers coverage, about 66 people attended.  It was the largest turn out for one of his coffees.   The group included developers, builders, engineers, Realtors, some of the City Staff, and a few of the council members made appearances.  John Crompton stayed the entire time.
I was really glad that the Mayor is encouraging everyone to get involved.  I've always been a big believer that good communication is important.  … (3 comments)

Parks or Pastures??? - 05/25/08 06:29 PM
Have you ever considered how NOT considering other people's points of view creates problems?   Based on the College Station City Council election results, the idea of parks and green space appears to be very high on a lot of the voters agendas.  I've spent a lot of time thinking about what do people really want.  I asked myself, "Which park do I like best and why?"

College Station's Lick Creek Park, on Rock Prarie Road East, is currently one of my two favorite parks in College Station.   Lick Creek consists of 515 acres.  I love jogging out there because it is a … (3 comments)

Living Life to It's Fulllest - 05/25/08 01:24 AM

Seasons change.  Nothing stays the same, yet everything stays the same.
I see the flowers in the field. Collectively, they all look the same.   Collectively, the create a beautiful picture.
However, if you look close, each individual flower is beautiful.  Each individual flower is a part of the total picture.
As citizens of our communities, we are just one of many.  As real estate professionals, we are just one of many.
Unlike the flowers in a field, we are not attached to one spot.  We can move about.  Each day, we have a choice about how we will spend that day.  Will we choose … (7 comments)

Dead Bugs - 05/17/08 12:54 PM
Don't vacant houses show better if there are not dead bugs laying around?  Who is responsible for cleaning up the dead bugs?

The owner?  Generally, if the house is vacant, the owner is out of town,  how will the owner even know that there are dead bugs?

The listing agent?  As a listing agent, I've cleaned up lots of dead bugs over the years.   Granted, that is not one of my most favorite things to do.  But, if the house sells, taking the time to flush a … (20 comments)

"Working Cowboys" - 05/14/08 10:42 AM
Have you seen T.W. Vanya's "Working Cowboys, Round-Up at the Diamond R" exhibit?  If not, you've only have until this Saturday, May 17, 2008.  The exhibit is being held at the Benjamin Knox Art Center located at 405 University Drive East, College Station, TX.

Included in the exhibit are paintings and photograhs that are primarily from the 2007 spring round up at the Diamond R Ranch, which is headquartered in Anderson, Texas.  Not all, but many of the pictures are of REAL working cowboys.  Not just a bunch of good ole' boys that love the country life, have cows as … (2 comments)

Time to Get Involved!!! - 05/13/08 07:47 AM
Although this post speaks about specific College Station, TX issues, the point is applicable to everyone that lives somewhere that is affected by "politics."
Alright, we've got two men, Dennis Maloney and Larry Stewart, that will be sworn onto the city council next week.  Unfortnately, Derek Dicston, one of the candidates that lost, opted to resign from his seat on the College Station Planning and Zoning Commission.
After reading the Bryan-College Station Eagle's article this morning, "New CS Council looks at Growth,"  http://www.theeagle.com/local/New-CS-Council-looks-at-growth , I've realized that we need to look forward.
According to the article:  Dennis Maloney is suggesting forming a committee of home builders, … (1 comments)

Voter apathy??? - 05/10/08 11:38 PM
Well....I'm a little suprised how the College Station City council election turned out.  Out of roughly 84,000 citizens in College Station, 5,422 voted for the Place 1 candidates.  Turn out for the other two seats was slighly less.
John Crompton was re-elected for the Place 1 seat.  Dennis Maloney beat out Ron Gay.  And Lawrence Stewart, a new comer that had never even served on a College Station commitee, defeated Chris Scotti.  The two incumbents that seemed to have the most "business sense" - are out.   The neighborhood integrity, please don't build in or around my backyard group is in.  This group, as a whole, appeared to consider the development … (7 comments)

Fraud and Deception - 05/07/08 05:29 PM
Why is it that low life scummy people are not the ones that get convicted of stealing thousands of dollars?  No one trusts them with money, so they do not have access to large amounts of money.
Why is it that people (or companies) that we trust, respect, and admire steal money...even if they really don't need it?  They were liked.  They were trusted.  They had access to the money.  AND they rationalized their behavior somehow.
Does that mean that everyone that trusted the "thief" was a bad person or a poor manager?  No.  In most cases, it does mean that … (9 comments)
