Many accidents that occur during the holidays can be avoided with a few simple steps. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides a good list of anti-fire safety tips that can be taken advantage of Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.
 
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Cooking equipment was involved in 18% of home decoration fires. This happens when a decoration is left on or too close to a stove or other cooking equipment.
